Yes, praising JD at this point would be ridiculous, wouldn't it?

The bar was raised by Nolan and JD did a good job (so far) of getting there.
You’ve seen a lot of praise from me towards JD this year…shit-canning Chris Davis twice in one season to OKC (and three times in 13 months)?
Good stuff, man.

Lee, Molina, Cantu, Guzman, Colby, Vlad, Feliz, Andrus,
Smoak and then Moreland over Davis, etc. Right now I love the entire front office. This might be the best Rangers 25 ever, good at both run prevention and scoring, a well rounded club. A good off-season followed by a good job plugging holes and adjusting in-season, all with his wallet tied behind his back.

"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Well...
From a raw scouting stand point… With two fastballs (roughly described as a cutter and sinker) at 90-93, and a very, very good hard curveball (slurvy) at 81-83, it’s extremely easy to see him as a solid Major League reliever in the near future.
He’s a ground ball machine. He keeps the ball in the yard. If he can figure out a third pitch, he’s definitely got some starter potential.
With everyone who has been traded this year, and the guys who have lost or will be losing eligibility, I don’t think anyone can name 30 better Rangers prospects than Ryan Tatusko at the time of this trade.

I tend to rate more complete players as better prospects than super raw guys with really high ceilings, but I won’t argue too much with someone putting a bunch of David Perez/Carlos Melo/Richard Alvarez types on a Top 30 list.

ha, ok, just for fun
Perez, Scheppers, Profar, Beltre, Font, Erlin, Ross, Ogando, Moreland, Skole, Beltre, Sardinas, Thompson, Gutierrez, Alfaro, Kirkman, Jackson, Tullis, Velazquez, Olt, MDLS, Eppley, Strop, Phillips, Boscan, Wielan, NeRa, Buckel, Bell, Deglan, Akins, Rojas, Brigham, Alvarez, Mendonca or DiFazio could still be above him as well, as far as prospecting
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
My opinions...
Your list is remarkably heavy on the 2010 Draft. Full of guys we know almost nothing about. I will concede Skole because he’s starting to perform a bit in the NWL, but I disagree with your inclusion of Buckel, Deglan, Akins, and Olt. Jackson hasn’t even signed. They may all wind up as better prospects than Tatusko, but new players versus a guy already in AA? It’s just a little early for me on them.
From the rest of your list, I don’t think these players are better prospects than Tatusko: Medonca, DiFazio, Rojas, Boscan, Brigham, and Miguel de los Santos.
I would be really tempted to leave Tatusko above Alvarez (fastball still not impressive), Sardinas (still don’t like him anywhere near as much as Profar), and Gutierrez (attitude).
I don’t think Ogando will qualify when the season ends.
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 30, 2010 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Remember that for a prospect, strikeout rate is important
Tatusko, 5.2 this year, 6.5 for his career, and he’s 25 pitching in AA.
MDLS’s strikeout rate is 13.8 this year, 14.6 over his career. and he’s only 21 pitching two levels below Tatusko. meaning that if he sends next year in Bakersfield, and is promoted to Frisco the year after, he’ll still be 2 years younger than Tatusko.
Ryan’s a great guy, but a lousy prospect. MDLS on the other hand, has struck out more than a third of the batters he’s faced in his 5 year professional baseball career. Oh my dear and fluffy lord…….
Sir Warwick Harrow: Whom do you represent?
Mal: Represent isn't exactly the...
Sir Warwick Harrow: Don't waste my time.
Mal: Fellow called Badger.
Sir Warwick Harrow: I know him, and I think he's a psychotic lowlife.
Mal: And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community.
Your only argument is to compare strikeout rates?
You still have to consider command and control issues. Projection as a starter or reliever, and how close each player is to his ceiling.
If you just want to compare ceilings, then, yeah, Miggy wins in a landslide. If you want to talk about which one has more value as a prospect right now, then the answer is most definitely Tatusko.
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 30, 2010 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions
you have to also take into account
ceiling and potential.
if you have him above Sardinas and Gutz, which those two are just outside my top ten. You are thinking Tatusko is around that range. I just don’t see any way that he approaches that high in our system. Olt is performing just as well as Skole. Deglan is still a first rounder and has a higher upside, among the other guys I listed whom I think all have more potential.
either way, prospect lists are a matter of opinion, and that’s what makes it fun to discuss
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I think it comes down to a matter of how you weight ceiling and potential
Trip seems to value proximity to ML/expected return over the riskier, high ceiling lottery tickets that some on here love more.
I try to strike a balance in between, but pure and abject sexiness can tilt me towards the ceiling, which is why I argued Skole vehemently over Moreland.

"I’m gonna go on record here and say a great many things excuse throwing a chair at someone." – D.A. Tron
Kind of...
There are exceptions, notably Jurick Profar, Tomas Telis (before he got hurt), Edwin Escobar (before he was traded).
I definitely like raw talent, but if there’s nothing “special” about that player, then my opinion tends to be lower.
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 30, 2010 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions
THIS
I posted in the minors thread. I forgot how good Telis hit the ball last year as a 17/18 year old between AZL and Spokane. He’s struggling this year, but he’s back from TJ surgery before he was supposed to be. Can he stick at catcher once he is healthy?
I think Sardinas has a reasonable ceiling, but at this stage in his development...
I don’t think it’s appropriate to slap a “Top 15” on him. Olt is like 3-4 years older than Skole, and they play on the same team.
My dislike for Gutz as a prospect has nothing to do with his talent or skill at pitching.

Age doesn't mean dick when both players no longer have physical projection.
Age is about projection. Beavan may be 4-5 years younger, but it’s not like he’s suddenly going to fill out and throw the ball in the mid-90s.
At best, you can hope a pitcher like them will develop a new pitch or have some kind of epiphany with a change up.
Beavan is definitely not as impressive as his stats. Tatusko is definitely more impressive than his stats. But, then again, what do I know? I’ve only seen like 100 IP of Beavan, and 50 IP of Tatusko.

Sorry.
Anyway, ZiPS has him falling back to a .319 wOBA, and his wOBAr at SC is .323, which is just barely below average.
Also, I would expect the ISO to go up some just from there being time for expected regression and it’s so far below what he usually puts up.
Sorry
I think his ISO could/should go up too by virtue of playing in Texas. Was the Baggydome a hitters park back then?

I don't actually know.
I could look at B-R in a minute.
Of note, StatCorner has Washington as being exactly as friendly for lefties as RBiA. Though much less so for home runs, so, yes, that might boost his ISO even beyond where it might be expected to regress to otherwise.
Arlington is friendlier for righties both in home runs and all around.

Closer, but I’ll still take Guzman. The peripheral-based results are close, the actual results are less so. To say nothing of having a switch hitter off the bench. And I feel the ability to avoid outs from your pinch hitter is even more important than it is from a regular, and Guzman destroys Greene there.
I think there were expectations for Khalil to rebound offensively
and that his numbers in St. Louis were partly because of injury and partly because of his relationship troubles with baseball. Of course, Guzman can “rebound” too – he was, afterall, wOBAing north of .350 just a couple of seasons ago…
Anyway, ignore my attempt to beat a dead horse
The one single thing on that list that is the most important
is DNP.

But why now?
Guzman above average in the field he can more than adequately fill Blanco’s fielding role and Arias is a better runner and hitter than Blanco

arias has to be DFA'd
you don’t mess with the pitchers right now, as your giving up pitchers, and acquiring an infielder. Blanco or Arias are done. Its got to be Arias.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

BTW, according to Fangraphs Guzman plays good D at second
thats good to know. Please leave now Arias… if they DFA’d him, the only team I could ever imagine picking him would be the Royals, well the stros possibly, and on that fact alone, DFAing is a good idea.

Kinsler
Anyone think that the injury is worst than expected, and that Arias and Blanco wouldnt cut it? They needed someone that could play for an extended period of time, thats why they went and did this?
I mean 15 days with a 9 game lead should have held unless its more than that.
Who knows
…but if it’s me I don’t get too comfortable with this lead. Two weeks is a long time. I do everything I can to make sure the Rangers not only maintain it, but continue to pull ahead. Leave as little as possible to chance and all that.

This season:
We’ve traded for:
Bengie Molina, Cliff Lee, Mark Lowe, Jorge Cantu, and Cristian Guzman
That’s just weird to me.
We've given up:
Chris Ray, Michael Main, Justin Smoak, Blake Beavan, Josh Lueke, Matt Lawson, Evan Reed, Omar Poveda, and (so far) Ryan Tatusko.
Jeez.
If you told me we made 4 different deals at the deadline, I would assume that at least one of Holland, Perez and Scheppers surely would be gone

its kind of awesome how aggressive and smart we’ve been at this deadline
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'

They have that SS who is the future for them
And I think they want Adam Kennedy to get more time at 2B
they aint winning now, might as well pick up a decent
prospect or two… these guys weren’t gonna get a shot here, but they might have a shot in the Nats orginization… they’ve put up decent enough numbers so you think they could fill in as cheap back of the rotation guys for the Nats over the next couple years. Guzman was getting them nothing by playing out his contract.

In that case
they should have asked for prospects, not guys who happen to have gaudy stats. Sure, Roark is 10-5, but he’s 23 and strikes out 6.4 per 9…. yaw… Tatusco may be 9-2, but he’s 25 and k’s 5.2 per 9
Guzman has a heartbeat, which makes this a complete utter fleecing of the Nats. good thing Joe Wieland’s got an ERA approacthing 8. and Boscan’s 7-9, and Pimentel’s only 6-6, and Font has only one 1 game so far….. :)

I don’t agree, because an ex-Rangers guy is in that FO, so he knows the players better than just looking at stats.

Who should be the 4th bench guy behind Guzman, Murphy, and Treanor?
Any chance they think about getting rid of both Blanco and Arias?
by kumizi on Jul 30, 2010 4:10 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
I would hope for special circumstances like pinch running
that they’d keep Blanco on.

why?
Murphy or Guzman could pinch run. Borbon could as well, let’s say if Murphy was starting.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
reread the question
Who should be the 4th bench guy behind Guzman, Murphy, and Treanor?
Murphy and Guzman would already be there, so I would assume the options are Arias or Blanco.

I understand the question, but there was no need to go to a 4th bench guy
just for pinch running. Moreland or Cantu would be fine as the other bench spot and you could use Murphy or Guzman to pinch run if necessary.

He is a middle infielder capable of probably giving you close to average defense.

Maybe they didn’t NEED to make it, but it’s very good insurance. After all the work the front office, coaching staff, and players have put in they want to make damn sure they’re in the playoffs. Good move.

The idea that we could have Cristian Guzman as infield depth in the post season just makes me feel so good.
If we started a season with Guzman at second, I wouldn’t consider it a strength, but as long as it wasn’t anything close to the strongest part of the team, I’d be okay.
That’s not a player who’s usually depth.
I think they needed to make it
because, let’s admit, we all have a tiny fear that Kinsler will be out quite a bit longer than 15 days. This is just smart insurance and an upgrade to the bench at the same time.

JD gets anything for either of those guys he cements the Executive of the Year?
The Rangers are trying to see if there is interest in either Scott Feldman or Rich Harden before Saturday’s trade deadline. One of them has to pitch on Saturday night against the Angels.
Teams are looking for starting pitching and Ted Lilly of the Cubs is considered the best remaining available pitcher on the market. The Rangers want to know if there are any teams interested in their pitchers and are talking with other clubs.
The Mets are one possibility. The Brewers are also looking for starting pitching. Harden is currently on the disabled list but could come off and start against the Angels on Saturday. If so, Feldman would likely move to the bullpen.

It seems inevitable, at this point, that he will be non-tendered this off-season.
I’m not sure if that means he can’t re-sign here afterward on a minor league deal. I want him back next year, but if a non-tender means we can’t keep him, then who knows.
Either way, I will be upset if he signs elsewhere and then gets healthy.

I had a big argument with a bunch of Astros fans on Texags (big A&M message board) about this in 2007 or so
They bought into the whole “rebuilding admits failure and only failed franchises like the Rangers have to rebuild, we’re a winner like the Yankees” mindset.
They also claimed Troy Patton was better than any pitcher we had and Felipe Paulino was heads and shoulders above some unkown rookie leaguer named Feliz.
When I found Lone Star Ball I just quit posting about baseball on Texags.

One would hope we dont offer Molina arbitration
Depending on what Guzman would make in arb, I’d consider offering him as our UTIL guy.

If Molina is Type B
I could see us offering him arbitration, hoping he doesn’t accept. I don’t think JD or Wash would be all that upset if he does accept though. If he is type A, I don’t think we’ll offer him arbitration.
Even if he does accept
so what? He’ll make 3 million or so in arb, and sadly, he’s one of the better options at C we have going into next year.

Type B is interesting. Still think he’d accept, but maybe the team is comfortable enough with him splitting time with someone (and can handle it financially) that they’re okay with it.

Cliff will either be here or net the Rangers 2 picks.
I have to think Cantu and Molina are tough cases for arbitration offers. Guzman is probably the only guy that’s definitely going to look for a multi-year deal, but even then, offering him arbitration is risky.
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 30, 2010 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions
I think
if guys like Cantu or Guzman accept, they’d be pretty solid bets to get a pay cut and supply some bench production, which would be great, as I never want to have an Arias-Blanco bench again.
So far, our potential FAs are
Cliff Lee (No Brainer)
Frankie (No Brainer)
Vlad (No Brainer)
Guzman (Maybe)
Molina (meh)
These guys are at least type B.
"If the Saints can reach the Superbowl, the Rangers can reach the World Series." - PhilKid

Well, my question is...
How many of those guys do you NOT want back? I think Frankie might be the only clear cut case of being able to offer a guy arbitration and be sure you’re getting picks instead of a player you don’t really want to pay for.
Lee and Vlad are definitely worth offering arbitration to, but I think I’d rather see them work out deals to stay here.
Molina, Guzman, and Cantu (who could jump into Type B status) are the “risks.”
I guess if Frankie, Lee, and Vlad all go, we could be having a draft pick bonanza in 2011.

Guzman made a significant amount this year.
Next year, through arbitration, he can not be offered less than 80% of this season’s salary. I’m not sure what this year’s salary was for him, but I have to imagine that 80% of it is a lot to pay for a utility IF.

So, if I recall, the Rangers were #2 in BA's preseason top Minor League systems
Since then, the flurry of trades and promotion of talent to the big leagues have dented but not depleted our minor league depth by removing a multitude young pitchers of and our best young hitting prospect.
I realize this is all premature, but we’ve got 4 hours till game time. So, factoring in all the extra draft picks the Rangers look to receive, the diverted funding from the Latin American signings, the breakout seasons such as Beltre and others, or disappointing seasons such as Kiker’s, and other teams’ farms (which I’m not familiar with), where could the Ranger’s farm system be ranked next year? Top 5 still?

I'd say top 5
yeah. It still has great pitching depth despite all the trades and while we’re pretty short on position players, Engel Beltre and Jurickson Profar are outside shots at top 100s.
Plus, next year, I think we’ll get like 6 or 7 picks in the first 2 rounds in a draft heavy in college OFs and pitchers. That’ll boost us right quick.

I think so
We lost Beavan and Smoak to trades, Feliz and Ogando to promotion. Scheppers will still likely be eligible, Marteen will almost assuredly be the top LHP in all prospectdom (maybe a top ten overall prospect). Beltre should easily break top 100. Font might creep into that discussion. Profar, Skole, and Erlin will boost the sexiness of our top ten, and don’t forget Alfaro.
I think we’re still a top five system.

But because they waited until a couple days before the auction maybe now he is willing to see it through. Ultimately its Hicks’ fault because it was he who waited until now to relent to the new deal
Isn't that
GnR’s fault? if they could make those concessions they should’ve done it when it first went to court and not waited till the last second

Okay, so let's say someone other than Green Ryan wins the auction
Will the lenders then okay that bid? If the lenders okay it, will MLB drag its feet and not approve? I find it unlikely that MLB will do that given the negative impact it would have on one of its emerging markets.
If they don't want Crane...
or Cuban, I don’t think they’ll approve it, regardless of if it drags on for another year. They’ll just take over the team.
by ghostofErikThompson on Jul 30, 2010 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions
If they take over, will they limit the payroll to such an extend that it will handcuff the team?
What kind of an annual budget can they expect if MLB is running the team?
MLB is running this team right now
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I think anyone
including Cubes will be approved, MLB will just be happy to get this nightmare over with, I think thats why Cuban is choosing to go at it on his own so he can own a MLB team

I won't go as far as to say they're stupid
I’ll take the other route and say the Yankees just bullied them in to the trade, and Houston wilted like their little bitch.

No, if you know anything about that FO you'd be more than comfortable saying they're stupid

I guess.
It just always seems that at this time of the year, EVERY YEAR, the Yankees get who they want, when they want, and the other trading partner looks like they got the shaft end of the deal.
I have a hard time coming up with a trade that the Yankees have pulled off in the last decade that benefited the other team better than the Yanks.

I understand
I’m pretty sure that’s why they targeted Berkman and not Dunn. Rizzo wants, you know, actual prospects and stuff. Ed Wade, on the other hand, is too bumbling and idiotic to realize what is involved in making a good trade.
The Yankees didn’t have to even try hard to fleece the Astros. Cashman probably let his 10 year-old nephew do the negotiating.

So, who ends up with the better MLB career - Mike Jacobs or Chris Davis?
