Rangers reportedly trade Saltalamacchia to Red Sox
Multiple reports say that the Rangers have traded Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the Red Sox.
More on this as it develops.
UPDATE -- Sean McAdams says it is for two minor leaguers, a player to be named later, and cash.
I thought a move with a fringe guy might happen to clear room on the 40 man roster for Cristian Guzman, but I was expecting someone like Brandon Boggs or Guillermo Moscoso, not Salty.
Boston has wanted him for a while.
UPDATE -- Evan Grant says it is RHP Roman Mendez and 1B Chris McGuinness for the minor leaguers.
UPDATE -- Kevin Goldstein says picking up Mendez is good for Texas.
UPDATE -- Here's a write-up on Mendez at Over The Monster, the SBN BoSox blog, from September, 2009.
UPDATE -- The cash is reportedly $350,000 going from Boston to the Rangers.

Let me elaborate
I don’t believe his value was going to come back up here. I don’t think it will in boston, but I think he has a better chance with a change of scenery
Salty's D is already good, his bat will surely come around

Here are the reports...
from SoxProspects.
McGuiness: Left-handed batter, hits with an open stance that he closes on pitch approach while employing a timing tap. He’s a little loud at the plate with some waving of his hands during his stance. Finishes with a two-handed follow through up around his back, a bit of an uppercut swing. Excellent plate discipline, doesn’t jump out at balls, tracks pitches right into the glove. He uncoils with his swing and has a shorter stroke. The ball comes off his bat well – he doesn’t create a lot of lift, but hits through the ball with a little top spin. Should excel, even against more advanced pitching. Average power potential. Below average speed. Intelligent. Solid defensively, picks errant throws well
Mendez: Young Dominican righty signed during initial international signing period in 2007. Front-of-the-rotation starter or high-leverage reliever potential. Has been filling out his frame, with some room to add a little bit more. His fastball sits between 94-96 mph and tops out at 99 mph with late hop, but comes in relatively straight with minimal horizontal movement and not much deception. May need to develop a cutter or a 2-seam fastball as he rises up the ranks. Also has a tight-breaking 82-85 mph slider with plus potential. Can be a wipeout pitch. Needs to be more consistent with finishing slider out of his delivery. 88-91 changeup is currently below-average, but has been developing feel. Separation from his fastball can improve. Good command, but can overthrow on occasion. Mature, focused, and poised on the mound. Fluid and balanced delivery, but can short-arm the ball now and again. Throws from a high 3/4 arm slot.

One big difference
It seems like the coaching staff and more recently the front office here is completely sour on him. And while that may happen fast in Boston, he will initially find people actually rooting for him. It seems pretty apparent that Ron Washington (probably among others) had no interest of ever seeing him catch another game in Arlington.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 31, 2010 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions
That will often happen
When you can hit for shit or throw the ball back to the pitcher…..just sayin.
The scouting report on Salty is that he’s a pampered, curly-haired motherfuck who didn’t earn his stripes. He has trouble throwing the ball back to the pitcher, claims to be a switch-hitter and is piss-poor in the clutch.
Have fun!
by oc on Jul 31, 2010 4:17 PM CDT
Sure
I’m not saying that the souring is undeserved. But knowing that your bosses are not fans of yours is not a good feeling, and many other players have benefited from moving to a more positive personal atmosphere. The question is obviously whether he actually has the ability in him to establish his game, and I was just saying that I kind of think he does. I wouldn’t bet on him being a big star, but he has enough talent to be a good hitter for a catcher and to do enough defensively to be viable.

It helps out
but its still not an easy jump for players to make if they are only beating up on younger competition. Look at guys like Ian Gac or Mike Bianucci. They put up amazing seasons in A ball before a promotion to Bakersfield and went on to disappoint. They still hit for power, but the Ks went way up and their walk rates went down. McGuiness though has a near 1:1 BB:K ratio right now to go with his amazing stat line which gives me some more hope that he’ll continue his Moreland impression.

I just think I would have liked the Salty deals I was in favor of more than a year ago more.
Of course, I was in favor of them because I thought Teagarden would at least be an a OK MLB catcher.

I thought trading Teagarden at the time
would have been the best thing because you’d be selling high. But I had my doubts about the return anyway. Gheez, I’d take a corn dog and a bag sunflower seeds now. I think we should loop Teagardens oppo field HR in opposing managers offices so as to get their attention. “Look how far this guy can hit a ball to the opposite field! He must be good! I must convince our GM.”
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I was on the Teagarden bandwagon.
But that was well before I joined this site and at the time he seemed like the most likely one to be steady defensively and consistently healthy. I never dreamed that his offense would wind up be so terrible.
Teagarden had the most questions about his health
due to a bad shoulder etc at one point

For some reason I was always concerned about Salty's height...
causing him health problems. It was probably unfounded but I preferred catchers with a more compact frame. But Mauer is a relative tall guy and he is going to give you a 130 games or so.
Yeah, that was discussed at the time of trade
It’s a valid concern, Mauer being the obvious exception, but the Twins still try to manage his health (and may eventually move him to maintain the bat).

One of the things that I like about this deal
is that there’s a chance we get something as valuable as Bowden/Masterson and Bard for Salty. No guarantees of course, but there’s some good potential with these 2 and the PTBNL.

Yep
Based on all the rumors at the time, the Rangers could have gotten some combination of Masterson, Bowden, and Bard. It was a pretty underwhelming offer for a then promising, young catcher and I’m glad JD turned it down. Salty didn’t work out, but I’m not sure what we got now is any worse than that.

It was a great trade for the Rangers. They got an outstanding return. Trading Teixeira was the right make, and helped make the team better than they would have been had they kept him.
You were wrong. Continuing to carp about the “centerpiece” not working out makes you look petty. Admit you were wrong and move on.

Oh, and he would also have made the Hall of Fame, while still being a player.

Hey folks, coming over from OTM to tell you that's a fairly good haul.
Roman Mendez can really bring the heat and could well be a future closer. He’s struggled so far this year, especially with homers, but I see him as having a similar path as Daniel Bard did, so there’s that.
Even though McGuiness isn’t really playing at a level that befits his age, he should be served well by his eye at the plate no matter where you put him. His power surge this year was pretty surprising, so I wouldn’t be quick to assume it’ll stay until you see him repeat it next year.

Operating under the assumption that it's a 2009 draftee
And they wouldn’t have been a PTBNL if they were signed prior to August 2009, we have:
3B David Renfroe (3rd round, MS high school, signed for 1.134M + 1.4M deferred)
RHP Madison Younginer (7th, SC HS, 975k)
RHP Kendal Volz (9th, Baylor, 550k)
OF Brandon Jacobs (10th, GA HS, 750k to buy out of Auburn FB scholarship)
SS Jason Thompson (11th, TN HS, 300k)
RHP Renny Parthemore (18th, PA HS, 150k)
1B Miles Head (26h, GA HS, 335k)
RHP Eric Curtis (28th, Miami-Dade CC, N/A)
Younginer and Thompson aren’t doing much in the GCL, Parthemore’s never played. Curtis is a converted catcher and is very raw. Jacobs and Head are doing okay (.740 OPS) in the New York-Penn league. As Z mentioned, Renfroe’s done nothing this year. Volz has been fairly decent as a starter in the Sally.
Wondering if it’s Jacobs or Volz…

It doesn't necessarily have to be a 2009 draft pick
The deal might have been put together at the last second and they needed to hurry up and get it turned in to the commissioners office. So they probably have a group of players that they can pick from, they just didn’t have time to do their research before the deadline.
this is probably the most likely scenario

Yeah, the only evidence to suggest it was a 2009 pick was that it's a common reason for PBTNL at this time
Instead, how about we run with the theory that JD is trying to decide between Westmoreland, Kelly, and Fuentes and didn’t want to rush the decision?

Does adding Salty
mean BOS is anticipating not being able to re-sign soon-to-be FA Martinez who might be expensive coming off his All-Star season? They have to decide whether to pick up Ortiz’s option plus Beltre is a FA after the season. Can they afford to re-up with all 3? Just wondering because Molina/Treanor/Teagarden/Ramirez seem like blah stopgap options while Martinez – throwing problems aside – would be a really nice bat to have at C for us.

The Redhawks...
are coming to Salt Lake on Wednesday. I’m having a hard time convincing myself that I should miss Rangers games and shuffle my work schedule to go see them though.
Obviously if Holland is pitching I’m going to make every effort to get there for that game. I’d also love to see Scheppers pitch, but with him in the ‘pen now it’s tough to predict when/if that will happen. I was also looking forward to seeing Salty and how he looked at the plate and his throwing. Obviously that’s not happening now.
Anyone else have any other reasons to miss Rangers games and see OKC? Omar Beltre? Strop? Obviously seeing live baseball and some of the prospects is nice, but right now it’s not as nice as Rangers baseball down the stretch.

That's dumb.
You can’t cite one guy in one trade three years ago as an example of how something “usually” goes, then dismiss other major components of the same deal.

Oh come on, tell me Perrotto really isn't making that argument
Salty wasn’t particularly can’t-miss at the time of the deal. There were some questions about whether he could stick @ catcher and if not, whether the bat would play @ 1B.
It was obvious at the time that JD was rolling the dice on Salty putting it together, taking a bunch of quantity to hedge our investment if he didn’t, but maybe coveting the slick-gloved, poor-hitting Low-A SS most of all.
Then it turned out the rookie ball pitcher was a hidden gem.

It's just funny to take joy in Salty failing
and conviniently ignore the two 21 yr old and 22 yr old all-stars we received from the trade.
well to be fair
The front office was half expecting him to play 1B when they traded for him, then he and his dad through a hissy fit about playing catch

Davis and Smoak can meet up in AAA
To commiserate. Seattle sent him down today.

Smoak and Beavan will be together again
Although, I’m not sure if they were ever teammates in Frisco
Smoak and Blake
were teammates in Clinton in 2008 right?

both were in frisco last year
cant remember if beavan had been promoted before smoak went to okc

The really important thing lost in all of today's events.
Fucking Joaquin Arias survives once again.
You could almost make the argument that we traded Salty to Boston to keep a spot for Arias on the 40.

he must do a fucking stellar job of keeping mice out of the dugout
Or something. I just don’t get it.

Neither do I.
You can’t point at anything he does better than Blanco right now.

Question about prospects...
Looking at BA’s Top 100 for 2009 with it’s boatload of Rangers…
Who the hell was Aaron Hicks, and how did I not know about him before? He’s listed at number 39 on the list, RHP from the Rangers.

Was he ever a Ranger, or is this list just wrong?

If he was ever a Ranger it was so secret that I never heard about it
Sounds like a typo.
