Rangers have 5 named to the All Star team

Congratulations to Josh Hamilton and Vladimir Guerrero, voted in as starters to the All Star game, and Neftali Feliz, Ian Kinsler, and Elvis Andrus, named as reserves.

The most surprising snub is Michael Young, who was expected to be named as a reserve.  Adrian Beltre and Alex Rodriguez were named as the backup third basemen, instead.

Kinsler

Kinsler is having an infinitely better year than Young.

On the field by leaps and bounds, and it would seem close at the plate.

by Black Francis on Jul 4, 2010 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I would say leaps and bounds is a bit of a stretch, but at the moment he seems to be a little better, and I really like his hitting right now.

"Leaps and bounds" is probably not appropriate, neither is "stretch"

2nd base is a weaker position than 3rd

The 4 best are Cano, Kinsler, Roberts, Pedroia. Roberts hasn’t played at all this year. Pedroia is on the DL. Ian missed a lot of time but has played pretty well this year.

Too many other good options at 3rd base for Young to get chosen.

Yeah

The lack of options at 2b is the key.
Actually thinking about it im not surprised young isnt in, since he isnt the defender beltre is and arod is arod

He's only 1/5

Just looking at their WARs, I was actually a bit surprised at how quickly Kinsler has caught up to Young

2.1 WAR for Kinsler vs. a 2.3 WAR for Young. Its not going to be too long before Kinsler passes him and that is nothing against Young, just how great of a season Kinsler is having even without the power he’s always had.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I was just looking at that too

and was surprised how close they were too.
I think it’s the lack of power and the missed time that had me thinking less of kinsler. I’m really not sure either is an allstar but I guess I just assumed young would get in as always because of the player vote.

by rentz on Jul 4, 2010 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup. Young has logged over 100 PA more than Kinsler this season.

Now, obviously, durability is an issue in determining player value. Obviously. But in terms of All-Star-worthy performance in the first half of the season, it’s not going to loom quite as large, especially since Kinsler’s time on the DL was at the very start of the year. And given that, as you note, Kinsler’s almost caught up to Young in terms of overall value despite missing time…

Based on his play

he hasn’t looked like an all-star to me. He’s in because it’s a weak position this year. I will say his defense has looked solid, though, if his bat means his total production isn’t what we’d wish.

It's improved lately

a month ago I don’t think you could have made that post. I’m not saying Kinsler sucks, but it’s a down year for 2B and I don’t view his production so far this year as elite. I didn’t intend to elicit a slew of strong reactions, people are putting more weight into my words than I did.

If you're the best of the worst

you’re still the best. Kinsler is in because he deserved it. The only thing that he hasn’t done this season is hit for much power which seems to be coming back, at least a little bit. .299 BA with a .402 OBP and a .368 wOBA on the season. With the defense he gives you, I don’t see how that isn’t a deserving choice, despite being in a weak position.

I wasn't too surprised that Young didn't get picked

Beltre deserves it more than FOTF. ARod and Young both have similair numbers, but ARod is the vastly superior player (and the bigger name) so he was chosen.

Plus Bautista kind of counts as a 3rd baseman.

AJM's feelings on the All-Star Game are exceptionally confusing.

It’s stupid and doesn’t matter, yet it is an outrage that Ryan Zimmermann didn’t make it.

Young’s been better than Bautista, yet, Bautista should be in ahead of Young.

Cobb's numbers were always at the top and even though he was hated

by other players (and a lot of fans) he would have been an all star every year, had it been around for most of his playing days

Yeah, don't you remember when......

…….Youk was asked to switch positions because there was someone better than him for the job and he threw a fit and demanded to be traded?

Oh, wait.

This is true.

In fact, I’ll always like the Red Sox just a little for coming back from three down in that playoff series against the Yankees. It was beautiful to see…that happen to the Yankees.

Is there a limit to the amount of vote...

because I just voted for Young/Zimmerman about 30 times.

No Teixeira

I think it’s more than cool that we have All-Stars Feliz (Or “Perez” as it’s pronounced on ESPN) and Andrus but no Teixeira.

Girardi didn’t want to be put in a situation to sub for him during the game…

No Konerko or Rios is pretty shocking

Though Konerko has a shot. His numbers are pretty up there

I haven’t actually looked at the roster yet, but how could they have done this poorly a job?

OT - the fireworks guy who blew off his arm

Last night during the game, we got the story out of Long Island about a Darwin candidate who blew his arm off using fireworks. Some wondered how in the world that could have happened. Here’s the answer:

Listening to ESPN radio this afternoon

and the host was saying how the only problem he had with the starters was Guerrero and that Ortiz was more deserving because Vladdy had missed time with injuries.

He did do his homework.

He looked up which team they played for, and saw that one of them played for the Red Sox, the official team of ESPN.

Well if Vlad somehow had 18 HR and 70 rbi to go with his rate stats

While having been on the DL significant time this season… heh that would be more impressive not less so.

by DShep on Jul 4, 2010 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

wow that is incredibly bad

a month ago they were calling for ortiz’s head

it is hard to say vlad is not top 3 or 4 for MVP

I think Young ought to be on the roster.

He’s been there so many years in a row now, it’s a shame to see him having such a good year and not get on. But you can say the same thing about ARod, so I can see why he got the nod even when he’s having a poor year (for him) at the plate. I’ll vote for MY as the last man. What can I say, I’m a Ranger homer and a MY fan.

Not to blow my own horn here, or anything, but.....

Told you Matt Capps gets in instead of Strasburg.

Waking up...

to find out the Neftali Feliz and Elvis Andrus are 2010 American League All Stars is just about the best thing I can think of.

Seriously, I usually don’t give two craps about the All Star game but this is wonderfully wonderful because America needs to know about Neffy and Elvis RIGHT NOW.

by ghostofErikThompson on Jul 4, 2010 2:39 PM CDT reply actions

Young

I’m a little surprised that Kinsler would have been picked over young, but not too surprised. Young hasn’t had many timely hits, has made more errors this year, and lately Kinsler is batting every bit as good or better than Young at the moment, even though Young’s average is higher right now. Kinsler looks very smart at the plate, maybe even the smartest right now.

Elvis has had a lot of timely hits too, though I don’t like the amount of errors he’s had. I would have named Young before him just due to errors.

You can’t deny that Vlad and Josh should be the main picks. Their batting averages speak for themselves, along with RBI’s. The Rangers wouldn’t have done anything without them in the month of June.
