Rangers recall Doug Mathis, option Omar Beltre

Per T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers have optioned Omar Beltre to AAA, and recalled Doug Mathis.

I can't say this is particularly surprising...the Rangers need another long man in the bullpen right now, with Dustin Nippert having thrown a lot of pitches yesterday, and I had some doubts about whether they'd go back to Beltre for Saturday's start.

This now leaves open the question of who gets the ball on Saturday against Baltimore.  Matt Harrison was optioned on June 30, and has to be in the minors 10 days, so I believe he could be recalled on Saturday, July 10.  Otherwise, Mathis or Nippert would likely start.

Really? Whoa

I certainly wouldn’t have bet on him being that high. I suspect, though, that his WAR has trended down somewhat from earlier in the season, as he’s had a few more rough patches than he did in that first run of brilliance.

IMO, he’s showing capable of being a solid 2/very good 3, which would thrill me to death.

I know it's been a decade since the Rangers have made the playoffs.........

But surely everyone (or most everyone) here has paid attention to baseball long enough to know that even the best of the best teams every year are going to lose 4 out of 6, or 5 out of 7, or God forbid 8 out of 10 over the course of a 162 game season.

Yes, I disagree with much of what Wash does. That includes having Elvis and Young both sit on the same day. That is stupid.

But to overrate the importance of a game on July 6th against one of the worst teams in baseball is Chicken Little to the extreme. Teams are going to ebb and flow over a 6 month season. It happens to the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, etc every year. And it would happen to this team, as well, whether they played their top 9 players for 162 games or not.

by GhettoBear04 on Jul 6, 2010 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

A T-bone is the worst cut of meat.

But you can make them pretty decent if you cook them in a crock pot for several hours. I have a hard time imagining buying a T-bone steaks at a store. But that is mainly because we always raise and feed out a steer to slaughter. So we wind up getting all the cuts of meat. Usually, our meat consumption goes in this order. Ribeyes, New York Strips, roasts/briskets, hamburger meat, round steaks and then T-bones last. That being said, if you are getting a good deal. There isn’t anything wrong with getting T-bones. But when you go somewhere and they are wanting 20 dollars for a T-bone. You are getting royally screwed, because it is a cheap, tough cut of meat.

by casew on Jul 6, 2010 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

it's not necessarily tough

if you get it cut thick enough. The best thing a T-bone has going for it is the meaty flavor you get from cooking on the bone. If you want a T-Bone, get it cut by the butcher (don’t buy the pre-cut ones) and get it AT LEAST an inch (i prefer an 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch cut), cook it on low heat (as case said), but after a quick sear over high heat.

That’s my favorite way to cook a tbone, anyway. But I do agree with casew in that a strip steak is a much better (and easier, imo) piece of meat to cook.

Well you're getting two cuts of meat...

the strip and filet. I can’t imagine ever complaining about a T-Bone. I used to work at Ruth’s Chris, and I have to say, the T-Bone was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had.

by lost in space on Jul 6, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Ruth's Chris

I think that is one of the big steakhouses that you hear the talk-show hosts advertising for. Most cuts of meats if done right can be made pretty good. Some people know how to cook and cut damn good briskets that come out tender. Others do them and they come out tough and sinewy.

by casew on Jul 6, 2010 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Ruth's Chris

Been there one time, spent about $55, and it was worth every penny.

Nearly $30 of that was for the steak alone- I went with the ribeye- but it was as perfect a piece of meat as I’ve ever eaten.

by RCCook on Jul 6, 2010 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

What??

A T-bone is a combination of New York Strip and tenderloin. I can see an argument for ribeye and porterhouse over it, but surely you’re not arguing that you’d rather have brisket or round steak?

Also, CM’s got it for $10/lb.

by GhettoBear04 on Jul 6, 2010 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Round steak is great if it is chicken fried. Butter fried is kind of "meh".

I don’t care for brisket unless it is really tender and in a tortilla with sour cream and cheese. Mainly, I get stuck eating hamburger meat and round steak because that is what I get to take back to college. Not going to complain, because it is free and saves me from having to buy any beef. For the most part though, back in the old days when I stayed at home when we got a beef in, that was sort of the order we consumed it in. Roasts got consumed faster because that was typically the Sunday lunch. Briskets would get consumed pretty fast because they could cook all day and save my mom the effort of having to cook a meal for supper after she got home from work. We always tried the steaks out as soon as we got a fresh beef and then after that they were saved for special occasions. Hamburger meat was probably the fast consumed because it is the easiest to fix and can be mixed with nearly anything. Our hamburger meat is also usually a little leaner and not as greasy as store bought.

Yeah, I just have a difficult time wrapping my mind around buying T-Bones at a store.

Kind of like the first time I bought ground beef, it just seemed weird. Also, the quality of our T-Bones probably aren’t as good as those found at a good steak house or store. Because we can’t afford to take a good 800 pound steer that will bring close to or more than $900 and feed it out. Everything else usually comes out just as good or better than store bought. But our T-Bones are typically not that great so I have kind of became biased against them.

Shiiiit son

As my Christmas gift every year, by parents give me some hamburger and other cuts they don’t like from a small farm, lotsa grass fed cow. I’m kind of a freak about fat and don’t eat much hamburger, but I can barely dampen a paper towel after I cook that stuff up. And the aroma…smells like you’re cooking a steak, and it tastes delicious right out of the pan, no spices at all. Yum.

Elvis Andrus also isn’t in the lineup, a decision Ron Washington made because the shortstop is dealing with a few bumps and bruises. Nothing serious, but things that could be aided by a day off.

It’s that he did both on the same f’ing day, meaning his boy Arias is playing a major role tonight at a position we’ve been told he can’t play.

It's annoying as fuck

here’s what happens:

1) Someone on the ML team struggles
2) A bunch of people start calling for their immediate AAA replacements, even if the AAA replacements are too young, too inexperienced or have the exact same problems as they guy they’re being called on to replace.
3) We get weeks after weeks of “why don’t we call _ up” posts which contribute absolutely nothing to the conversation
4) When the player does get called up, and struggles, the same posters forget their rabid advocacy and starts calling for the next name in line.

It’s fucking annoying, young players take awhile to get it and we can’t build a roster 12 deep with SPs unless we have the world’s most obnoxiously large payroll and at this point the guys in AAA (and yes, this includes Tanner Scheppers) are not ready yet. Churning the roster does nothing to help that. So stop making posts about it you rabid band of idiots.

Churn the roster?

We had to make a move. Beltre went down, Mathis is up. Mathis has a K/BB rate of 1.26, Kirkman’s is better than that.

Kirkman does walk a lot of people, nearly 5 per 9, but we give him a two week taste in the show and see what happens.

So we disagree, I do think your use of vagina, motherfuckers and so on is very well done.

We are in first place because we have a talented team....

Managers have very little to do with it….

However in the areas in which he does make a difference (Bullpen use/ pinch hitting/ signs/ days off) he has been questionable at best.

Case in point:

I can remember at least 5 times in which the starter was left in way too long (The last 2 being Feldman starts) in which both we lost as the starter got shelled….if we went to the bullpen we would have had a much better chance of winning.

The small ball of bunting at enormous rate for the American league has not helped this offense one bit and has probably hurt it more than anything as half the time its Elvis bunting guys over.

The consistently bad use of a bench case in point TONIGHT or any getaway day in a series.

by death of the cool on Jul 6, 2010 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Remember early in the season

when we were overly worried that this pen would be ground to dust by early August? We have one pitcher in the rotation that we can’t expect more than 3 innings out of right now, and while I’m as tired of the Scott Feldman experience as everyone else, we have to milk as much as we can out of the pitchers we have, and pray that Holland/Harden returns and can be effective pitchers.

Washington annoys the fuck out of me with his early bunting and his nonsensical use of the bench, but really, what happens with the bench and even the bullpen or lineup matters for very little. We’re a talented team, and we will continue to be talented regardless of what Wash does. Blaming him for the team’s struggles is stupid, as is crediting him for its successes.

His managing skills

Leaving Borbon in the line-up earlier this season despite his struggles, using pitchers that will help keep them in the top spot despite the injuries to some of the pitchers, making some good calls with double steals.

It’s easy for everyone on here to complain because they aren’t getting paid to do this. Just remember who actually has the job of being the Texas Rangers manager and who does not.

by Tyler Bouldin on Jul 6, 2010 6:01 PM CDT reply actions

so....

Letting Borbon struggle for a month was a good thing?

Our base stealing and overall base running has been a circus!!!

Lets not forget that we were in a playoff race last year while he decided it was a good time to experiment with drugs. What kind of decision making process is that?

The only thing that keeps him around is that the players like playing for him because he is a players coach…..but he will get his dick managed off in a playoff series

by death of the cool on Jul 6, 2010 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes it was

because Julio Borbon at his best >>>> Brandon Bogg/Greg Gentry or Even David Murphy at their best. If allowing him to struggle, as young players are wont to do, allows him to hit well from there on out and helps avoid churning the roster, then absolutely, sticking with Julio Borbon was a good thing. As was moving him to the 9th spot where his struggles will have less of an effect on team production.

Just like it’s a good thing to stick with a struggling Justin Smoak, it was a good thing to stick with a struggling Borbon and Frankie Franciscio and Joaquin Benoit before them.

I think

that blaming Washington for struggles or crediting him for wins is equally as stupid. It’s not as if he doesn’t play his best players 95% of the time, this team just doesn’t have adequate bench production from its IF.

The real reason we’re struggling is that Vlad, MY, Smoak, the Catchers and Cruz are all cold for the last few games and Hamilton and Kinsler can’t carry the lineup by themselves, especially not with young, struggling pitchers like Beltre on the mound. Ron Washington has very little to do with our successes or failures. He is what he is, to quote the source.

I really do, but I respectfully disagree with you guys. What if Ron Washington wasn’t a “players manager”. Would they have the same attitude towards the game if he wasn’t the manager?
