New DMN Rangers newsletter up

Evan Grant has a new edition of his Rangers newsletter up...

He explains why Justin Smoak is a better option than Chris Davis right now, even invoking BABIP to explain why Smoak should be better going forward, rebuts someone who thinks that the problem with the Rangers' pitching the last few days is Bengie Molina, and deals with, not one, but TWO different people who think the Rangers would be better with David Murphy starting than Nelson Cruz.

Check it out...

Great rebuttal question from Evan
Can Davis hit, Dick?

What is it

With the casual Ranger fan and their love of David Murphy

Grit and hustle

You don’t see those talented guys getting that dirt on their jerseys.

The old school looking white guy that looks good going to get the ball

I don’t think the average fan seems to be appreciating Cruz, probably cause of the injury and the occasionally sloppy looking OF play.

What do voluntary mean?

The dude abides.....

by JKolar on Jul 8, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with both of above

It’s true though, something about a white guy who looks like he is playing hard is very attractive to the casual baseball fan.

by TheHuntforRedOctober on Jul 8, 2010 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I believe that it is projectability

The casual fan feels like he looks like a David Murphy and thus can project himself out onto the field. Much like Wash and Utility Players. This makes it easy to root for him since he is also the underdog to make it.

Cruz & Murphy

Can someone loan me an extra pair of hands? A double facepalm isn’t enough for how stupid those questions were…

by RCCook on Jul 8, 2010 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

We all know what this means
They are 28-17 when Murphy starts; 21-22 when Cruz starts.

THAT IS SIGNIFICANT AND OBVIOUSLY CAUSED BY NELSON AND PROBABLY HIS BAD ROUTES.

No

It is because they play with more “energy” when Murphy is out there.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 8, 2010 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Augh!

We know it’s proven fact, given those records, that Murphy is making the team better than Cruz, but for which reason?!?

But Cruz and Murphy in the game last night AT THE SAME TIME

Wouldn’t that be like dividing the game by zero?

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

While I will agree that Murphy is not Nelson Cruz, I think Murphy plays a pretty important place on this team. He is the 4th OF. You can call me a casual fan but if I had a team I would like a player like Murphy on my team. He sits quietly and don’t bitch about not playing. He goes about his business like a professional that he is. Unfortunately he is just not quite as talented as others on the team.

That's not the discussion

While I personally would like to see a guy like Boggs get a shot at the 4th outfielder spot, most here don’t have a problem with Murphy himself or his position on the team as a bench outfielder. It’s the notion that he is more talented and has a more positive impact on this team than a guy like Nelson Cruz. Especially considering the fact that defensive metrics bear out that Cruz is a good fielder and has a great arm and his hitting numbers speak for themselves. Murphy is just that.. a 4th OF, not a replacement for Cruz

by TheHuntforRedOctober on Jul 8, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok

I am just too much of a “fan” to see that. Cruz is without a doubt a much better fielder/hitter/general player than Murphy. Please remind me why Boggs got sent back down. Was it last year? I remember him pounding the ball when he first came up but now I have forgotten his particulars.

I have to wonder

if there’s some racism there — perhaps not even at a conscious level…

I remember that Juan Gonzalez got a lot of heat for being “lazy.” He was injury prone, but I always heard that he was too lazy to play — he never got the benefit of the doubt. And he never did get the appreciation that I think he was due given some of the really great seasons he had here (especially 1993 and 1998). I always wondered if there was some latent racism going on there. In retrospect, it is widely assumed that he was on steroids, but people didn’t think about that stuff in the 90s.

This just seems like more of that same thing with Nelson Cruz. He’s probably been one of the best outfielders in the majors this year and people here want to bench him in favor of David Murphy?! Even from a purely visceral standpoint, I feel like Cruz “hustles” and “shows grit” at least as much as Murphy. I can’t help but wonder if “hustle” is a characteristic that is only attributable to white players…

Oh, for science's sake
I realize that the “OPS” stat is very popular.

He actually makes a fairly interesting point after that, but, I’ll be fucked by a broomstick if that isn’t just about the worst way he could have opened up that question.

Yeah, he has a good point, but that sentence sounds like he's channeling Lewin's "that OPS stat..."

What he’s doing seems pretty close to wOBA, except without the fancy weight calculations.

i wish Grant had mentioned wOBA there

Sickles never answered my question yesterday. In fact, he deleted it.

That’s bullshit man. He never specified that the question had to be about minor league baseball.

no shit

there is a large contingent of “fans” that want Pudge to come back at any cost. Or at least can’t understand that the Rangers got out bid on the Pudge front last year. Sometimes it is amusing but a lot of time it is a beating.

Sadly, there once was a time where I was even more naive of a fan than I am now.

Where I liked Murphy as much as Cruz and thought trading Teagarden would be a really bad idea. Oh how I regret those days.

by casew on Jul 8, 2010 1:37 PM CDT reply actions

Trading Teagarden is still a really bad idea.

You’d have to give up someone like Smoak or Holland for anyone to be willing to take him off of your hands.

Hypothetical
