Cliff Lee is a TEXAS RANGER!!
The Yankees were 'on the brink' of acquiring Cliff Lee last night, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Top catching prospect Jesus Montero would head to the Mariners in the potential deal. Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik wants to move quickly and has been in 'constant contact' with Yankees GM Brian Cashman over the course of the last week, according to Sherman. Other clubs remain involved, but the Yankees are the heavy favorite to acquire the lefty.
Update: Lee is supposed to face the Yankees tonight, but talks are intensifying, reports Jon Heyman of SI.com. Discussions between the Yankees and Mariners appear serious and it's 'quite possible' that a deal will be completed.
Update: Sherman hears that the Mariners would get at least three prospects, including Montero. Second baseman David Adams appears to be in the mix. Lee is supposed to face the Yankees tonight, but that could change. If a trade is completed today, Lee will not face the Mariners tonight, or possibly for the entire weekend series
Update: Meanwhile ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that no deal is in place, and the Mariners could double back to continue discussions with the Rays, Twins, Rangers, Reds and others. The Mariners initially had a ‘huge’ asking price for Lee, but lowered their demands yesterday. As Olney points out, a trade for Lee could mean Javier Vazquez’s days in the Bronx are numbered.
Update: 10:44: Catching prospect Jesus Montero and second base prospect David Adams will head to the Mariners, possibly with another prospect, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who broke the story.
Maybe there is a way we can get him without Smoak in the deal?
I don't know much about this kid. Who would be comparable in our system?
I guess this saves us from trading Smoak.
Go Rangers!

Smoak
I’ve been away from LSB for a couple days. What % here want Lee if it requires Smoak?
Mixed bag right now
I would say 50-50 maybe more like a 40-60.

but he’s still a major prospect and a guy I do not want Seattle to have.

I really don't see the point
in NYY giving up prospects to get Lee now. They don’t need him. I suppose they can trade for Lee, then trade Vazquez to recoup some of the prospect value — THEN they sign Lee to an extension and they don’t have to give up any 2011 draft picks. If Cashman pulls all that off he’s a genius.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
They need him
so nobody else gets him. He is really the only game-changing player out there. Shocking as it might sound, they may view Tampa, Texas and Minnesota as post-season threats if any were to land Lee. All are in on him. Taking him away from those teams could be as useful as adding him.

But seriously, people are saying they don’t think he’ll be a catcher.
And if he’s a 1st base/DH-type putting up a .737 OPS in AAA right now, it’s hard to be impressed.
He is only 20 years old, so has plenty of time to get that up to the .900 OPS he had in AA at 19.
But, he definitely doesn’t fit in the Yankees system, so there is no reason for NY to not trade him. This is a win-win situation for them.

They've talked about pulling him from the weekend series
Wouldn’t it be funny if this was ploy by NY to just avoid having to face Lee in this series?
The Mariners initially had a ‘huge’ asking price for Lee, but lowered their demands yesterday.
Of course they lowered their asking price, because for some reason (behind the scenes cash transfers?) everyone drops their pants for the Yankees.
I don't think that's the point
SEA was asking two elite prospects which NYY didn’t have. Everyone else scoffed so they lowered their price to one elite prospect. NYY has one elite prospect at the biggest need position for SEA. NYY know they will sign Lee long term and can replace that catcher in the FA market.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
From the Sherman peice, it sounds like the M's wanted a bat from the beginning
The Mariners were valuing a high-end bat that they could have in their lineup no later than Opening Day 2011 and/or a catcher. Despite Montero’s problems offensively in Triple-A this year, Seattle still recognized that he was 20 and think he has a special offensive ability. The Mariners also believe that Montero’s defensive abilities have improved and that he might not have to move off the position to first base or DH. In the end, Seattle could not find another bat nearly as good in an offer from any other team. And unless that changed at the last second, the Mariners were going with the Yankees to trade Lee.
And from that last part, it sounds like we weren’t willing to part with Smoak.

I don't think the majority of people here are that upset it's the Yankees...
there’s not too much to bitch about with this deal.
So, my take is that the Yankees are doing this to block the Rays from getting Lee.
The rumor that seemed most real to me was the one about the Rays getting Brett Lawrie by trading BJ. And, with all of the pitching the Rays have, it really appears the Ms prefer a big bat to pitching. The alternative to that argument is that the Rays maybe didn’t offer pitching, but I find that hard to believe if they really wanted Lee.
Also, in favor of saying the Ms wanted a big bat are the rumors of the Twins and Ms lining up well with the Twins hitting prospects, and the recent reports that the Rangers would have to trade Smoak.
The Yankees have the best of both worlds now. They can invest in high-end prospects, flip them away as they please (or not), then easily replace their production by overspending in the FA market.

Truthfully, I am not wowed by the Montero package as much as I would think.
The problem with Montero is that he cannot stay behind the plate. Poor footwork, game calling and ball transfer skills. How does he translate to a move to 1st? Will his lower half cooperate enough to be nimble around the bag at 1st? Does he get to the point where he is not a defensive liability at 1st?
If he is going to have to derive all of his value from his bat, the probability of him really being a super star player diminishes quite a bit. Is it possible? Sure, but with him no longer being a viable C there is very few places to go from 1B/DH.

Montero
I get that he is a big time prospect, and he is super young and loaded with talent, but it doesnt change the fact that he isnt producing this year in AAA. Furthermore, he doesnt appear to be a walking machine who is going to flirt with a .400 OBP or anything….
He is certainly a good prospect, but i guess i just dont buy him being as high as some…just going off the numbers it appears he will be more in the mold of the slugger who doesnt walk a ton rather than being the MVP type who does both
There are guys id be more afraid of going to the Ms
Sorry, I'm really fucking stupid and should be ridiculed and mocked for said stupidity.
Also please don't trade for Cliff Lee because I want to have a farm system for the next 6 years.
Unless the player came from us
there are few people scarier than Montero in the minors.

The Animated Ballpark in Arlington
Uh, not producing in AAA?
He’s 20. He started a bit slow but has picked up considerably lately, with a June wOBA of .353 and a .372 mark so far in July. This is exactly what you want to see from someone so young in the upper minors, improvement. He has a 10% walk rate and a 20% LD rate.
If Montero were in the Rangers system, he’d be one of the guys we’d deem untouchable in this type of trade. There would be debates in our prospects poll as to who should be ranked first, Perez or Montero.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
Yup
Some would argue Montero, even as a 1B or DH, is more valuable because he’s closer to the bigs and less likely to get hurt.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
This is why the yankees are great, but hated lol
Also the reason why rangers havent made the playoffs in a decade.
I find it hard to believe a montero, adams, mcallister offer couldnt be topped. Rangers have more than enough depth to pull it off.

From TR
I’m not a big TR Sullivan fan, but I hope this is true:
Rangers officials were scratching their heads Friday morning as to why the Mariners would have taken a deal that included catcher Jesus Montero and second baseman David Adams.
The Rangers believe they could have offered a much better package in that trade and were prepared to do so.
The Mariners want Justin Smoak but club officials have indicated the Rangers aren’t interested in doing that. They have told people who have asked they aren’t inclined to trade Smoak. They will obviously move first baseman Chris Davis, who is leading the PCL in hitting.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia would satisfy the Mariners need for a catcher. The Rangers also have outfielder Engel Beltre at Double A Frisco. From a pitching standpoint, the Rangers are deep, beginning with Derek Holland, Omar Beltre and Blake Beavan at the top of the Minor League depth chart and going all the way down.
They just don’t want to talk about Tanner Scheppers or Martin Perez.
http://trsullivan.mlblogs.com/archives/2010/07/mariners-yankees_trade_offrang.html
So, no Smoak or Perez makes me happy
Adam Von Soulsmasher
Is Ranger ownership situation making Lee trade more likely? If Ryan/Daniels don’t think they’ll be here after sale, more likely to sell farm
Prospect whores, this is the risk the rangers have to make
10 freakin years not in the playoffs, arent you sick of waiting. I dont care if colby lewis is pitching well. In a short playoff series the yankees, rays or whoever will lick their chops if they are facing lewis, wilson, feldman.
Obviously
But will they lick their chops in a few years facing Feliz, Holland, Perez, Scheppers? Regardless of how many turn out. This team won’t win with Lee THIS year and they won’t win without him, who cares if we make the playoffs and get swept or win 2 games. That’s not the goal. Bottom line, this hurts our championship hopes, it doesn’t help it

I think the yankees were used.....
to scare teams and up the bidding

the whole time they are wanting a team to bend....
if no team bends…they would have to settle. It appears teams bent

ed_price An official of uninvolved team said that #Rangers now willing to put Justin Smoak in a deal for Cliff Lee. And don’t count out #Reds.
I hate this fucking team.
I prefer my sources to be evolved

Dealing smoak for 3 months of lee might just make my head implode

I follow like 10 M's blogger/fans
I might kill them all

Then trade for Ben Sheets
Rangers just give up Boggs or Treanor
Ben Sheets will cost more than that....
Treanor…..really?

Beane values defense
Also treanors wife could be an extra in the moneyball movie
Your act sucks

Did you call the hypothetical hardware store and buy a theoretical chain saw?
The Reds need to end this.
Alonzo is expendable when you have Bruce. Put him and some other crap in and end this and get Lee out of the AL.
Votto
He’s a 1B

So
If the final deal was Crush + Holland OR Scheppers, which pitcher would you least like to lose? I would be very torn.
I apologize if this was asked elsewhere.
i want to keep the lefty whose
arm isnt a ticking timebomb
I feel that both
players are a coinflip. Holland could be an injury prone, inconsistent thrower or he could turn into a TORP. Scheppers could ultimately be destined for the bullpen only for his arm to blow up in a couple years or he could be the second coming of Verlander. I love both players’ upside but their similar risk/reward ratios make it hard for me to pick one over the other.
Smoak + 3
PLUS HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE

Mark Lowe is out for the year,,,
something isn’t right
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
He's a truly nuclear arm when he's right.
His first taste of the big leagues he was throwing 100mph with truly sickening movement, and a slider/changeup combo that you honestly couldn’t differentiate at 88-92.
He’s just been fragile, but when healthy he’s really sick as a stopper.
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
His inclusion might have to do with the amount of money changing hands, sort of a way
to borrow against the cash being sent over today?
