Cliff Lee is a TEXAS RANGER!!

The Yankees were 'on the brink' of acquiring Cliff Lee last night, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Top catching prospect Jesus Montero would head to the Mariners in the potential deal. Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik wants to move quickly and has been in 'constant contact' with Yankees GM Brian Cashman over the course of the last week, according to Sherman. Other clubs remain involved, but the Yankees are the heavy favorite to acquire the lefty.

Update: Lee is supposed to face the Yankees tonight, but talks are intensifying, reports Jon Heyman of SI.com. Discussions between the Yankees and Mariners appear serious and it's 'quite possible' that a deal will be completed.

Update: Sherman hears that the Mariners would get at least three prospects, including Montero. Second baseman David Adams appears to be in the mix. Lee is supposed to face the Yankees tonight, but that could change. If a trade is completed today, Lee will not face the Mariners tonight, or possibly for the entire weekend series

Update: Meanwhile ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that no deal is in place, and the Mariners could double back to continue discussions with the Rays, Twins, Rangers, Reds and others. The Mariners initially had a ‘huge’ asking price for Lee, but lowered their demands yesterday. As Olney points out, a trade for Lee could mean Javier Vazquez’s days in the Bronx are numbered.

Update: 10:44: Catching prospect Jesus Montero and second base prospect David Adams will head to the Mariners, possibly with another prospect, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who broke the story.

Maybe there is a way we can get him without Smoak in the deal?

I don't know much about this kid. Who would be comparable in our system?

I guess this saves us from trading Smoak.

Go Rangers!

Smoak

Montero

Montero was the 4th best prospect in baseball, per Baseball America. Smoak was number 13.

Yep

But Montero has struggled in AAA this year while Smoak’s posted a .355 Major-league WOBAR.

I really don't see the point

in NYY giving up prospects to get Lee now. They don’t need him. I suppose they can trade for Lee, then trade Vazquez to recoup some of the prospect value — THEN they sign Lee to an extension and they don’t have to give up any 2011 draft picks. If Cashman pulls all that off he’s a genius.

They need him

so nobody else gets him. He is really the only game-changing player out there. Shocking as it might sound, they may view Tampa, Texas and Minnesota as post-season threats if any were to land Lee. All are in on him. Taking him away from those teams could be as useful as adding him.

Ha

But seriously, people are saying they don’t think he’ll be a catcher.

And if he’s a 1st base/DH-type putting up a .737 OPS in AAA right now, it’s hard to be impressed.

He is only 20 years old, so has plenty of time to get that up to the .900 OPS he had in AA at 19.

But, he definitely doesn’t fit in the Yankees system, so there is no reason for NY to not trade him. This is a win-win situation for them.

we should give up on trading away future infrastructure for a rental this year

the price is too high in terms of what we give up and what Lee does for this team – that based on the understanding that a bidding war was possible.

by MikeEl on Jul 9, 2010 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

The Mariners initially had a ‘huge’ asking price for Lee, but lowered their demands yesterday.

Of course they lowered their asking price, because for some reason (behind the scenes cash transfers?) everyone drops their pants for the Yankees.

by cmkelly29 on Jul 9, 2010 8:48 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think that's the point

SEA was asking two elite prospects which NYY didn’t have. Everyone else scoffed so they lowered their price to one elite prospect. NYY has one elite prospect at the biggest need position for SEA. NYY know they will sign Lee long term and can replace that catcher in the FA market.

From the Sherman peice, it sounds like the M's wanted a bat from the beginning
The Mariners were valuing a high-end bat that they could have in their lineup no later than Opening Day 2011 and/or a catcher. Despite Montero’s problems offensively in Triple-A this year, Seattle still recognized that he was 20 and think he has a special offensive ability. The Mariners also believe that Montero’s defensive abilities have improved and that he might not have to move off the position to first base or DH. In the end, Seattle could not find another bat nearly as good in an offer from any other team. And unless that changed at the last second, the Mariners were going with the Yankees to trade Lee.

And from that last part, it sounds like we weren’t willing to part with Smoak.

Good for us.

So, my take is that the Yankees are doing this to block the Rays from getting Lee.

The rumor that seemed most real to me was the one about the Rays getting Brett Lawrie by trading BJ. And, with all of the pitching the Rays have, it really appears the Ms prefer a big bat to pitching. The alternative to that argument is that the Rays maybe didn’t offer pitching, but I find that hard to believe if they really wanted Lee.

Also, in favor of saying the Ms wanted a big bat are the rumors of the Twins and Ms lining up well with the Twins hitting prospects, and the recent reports that the Rangers would have to trade Smoak.

The Yankees have the best of both worlds now. They can invest in high-end prospects, flip them away as they please (or not), then easily replace their production by overspending in the FA market.

As Dave Cameron just pointed out

The Mariners now have 3 top 15 prospects in baseball as ranked by Baseball America Pre-Season (Montero, Ackley, and Pineda).

Although it will be fun to have our top prospects Perez/Scheppers/Feliz pitching against their top hitting prospects Ackley/Montero. Should be fun for the future.

meh

I’m aware of Ackley’s reputation, but I have to think Seattle is a little underimpressed thus far with his performance at AA, even at 22 years old.

And now I get to root for both Cliff Lee and Jesus Montero to fail, good deal.

Truthfully, I am not wowed by the Montero package as much as I would think.

The problem with Montero is that he cannot stay behind the plate. Poor footwork, game calling and ball transfer skills. How does he translate to a move to 1st? Will his lower half cooperate enough to be nimble around the bag at 1st? Does he get to the point where he is not a defensive liability at 1st?

If he is going to have to derive all of his value from his bat, the probability of him really being a super star player diminishes quite a bit. Is it possible? Sure, but with him no longer being a viable C there is very few places to go from 1B/DH.

Uh, not producing in AAA?

He’s 20. He started a bit slow but has picked up considerably lately, with a June wOBA of .353 and a .372 mark so far in July. This is exactly what you want to see from someone so young in the upper minors, improvement. He has a 10% walk rate and a 20% LD rate.

If Montero were in the Rangers system, he’d be one of the guys we’d deem untouchable in this type of trade. There would be debates in our prospects poll as to who should be ranked first, Perez or Montero.

From TR

I’m not a big TR Sullivan fan, but I hope this is true:

Rangers officials were scratching their heads Friday morning as to why the Mariners would have taken a deal that included catcher Jesus Montero and second baseman David Adams.

The Rangers believe they could have offered a much better package in that trade and were prepared to do so.

The Mariners want Justin Smoak but club officials have indicated the Rangers aren’t interested in doing that. They have told people who have asked they aren’t inclined to trade Smoak. They will obviously move first baseman Chris Davis, who is leading the PCL in hitting.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia would satisfy the Mariners need for a catcher. The Rangers also have outfielder Engel Beltre at Double A Frisco. From a pitching standpoint, the Rangers are deep, beginning with Derek Holland, Omar Beltre and Blake Beavan at the top of the Minor League depth chart and going all the way down.

They just don’t want to talk about Tanner Scheppers or Martin Perez.

http://trsullivan.mlblogs.com/archives/2010/07/mariners-yankees_trade_offrang.html

Votto

He’s a 1B

So

If the final deal was Crush + Holland OR Scheppers, which pitcher would you least like to lose? I would be very torn.

I apologize if this was asked elsewhere.

I feel that both

players are a coinflip. Holland could be an injury prone, inconsistent thrower or he could turn into a TORP. Scheppers could ultimately be destined for the bullpen only for his arm to blow up in a couple years or he could be the second coming of Verlander. I love both players’ upside but their similar risk/reward ratios make it hard for me to pick one over the other.

Yeah, wtf?!

Is he under control for awhile?

He's a truly nuclear arm when he's right.

His first taste of the big leagues he was throwing 100mph with truly sickening movement, and a slider/changeup combo that you honestly couldn’t differentiate at 88-92.

He’s just been fragile, but when healthy he’s really sick as a stopper.

His inclusion might have to do with the amount of money changing hands, sort of a way

to borrow against the cash being sent over today?
