The Best Corner Outfield Tandem in the MLB

This is inspired by a comment made by slc ranger in the Post-game thread and by the fact that I can't sleep after wins like that...but mostly slc.

All stats regrettably don't include last night's slugfest (WAIT, NOW THEY DO*), and I mostly decided to base it on who had played the most games at left field and right field (respectively), regardless of whether they still start or were traded or whatever.  Occasionally, on a whim, I would just throw in somebody that seemed like they should be there (the Giants, Athletics, and a few other teams had weird distributions for their outfield).  If any of my selections bother you, screw you.  This was about the awesomeness that is Hamilton and Nellie.

*I only bothered to update teams near the top, since they were the point of this little study.

There you go.  For the most part, these numbers speak for themselves, and it's 3:40 AM, so I'll just leave a few points here.

  • Despite playing in nearly 30 fewer games than the the second best COF (Rays), the duo of Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz have been almost 20 runs more valuable than Crawford and Zobrist.
  • Jesus Christ, Astros.
  • No one really comes close to these two offensively, particularly if I'd bothered to account for offense on a per game basis.
  • They still rank 5th in defense (Crawford and Zobrist are pretty close to lapping the field here, though).
  • Hamilton would rank 4th in this list (3rd if you don't count him for the Rangers).
  • Cruz himself would rank a respectable 12th.
  • Every other game, our corner outfield gives us a run a replace player wouldn't.  That adds up in a hurry.
  • Seriously, Houston.  1.7 runs above replacement?

Wow, you just cut me off at the pass.

Good stuff. “Not even close” indeed appears accurate. Not that I really doubted it, this just seemed like a fun thing to put together.

It's also worth noting that Ludwick was traded to SD

So the Cardinals #3 tandem doesn’t exist anymore.

Yeah,

the Indians (6th) and Royals (10th) also split theirs up.

In the end I just decided to figure out which group had produced the most to date.

I go there currently.

I was on staff in 2008, not sure how the team looks this year.

Thanks...

for doing the legwork on that. Very interesting. I guess when I said it wasn’t close I wasn’t just being a Rangers homer.

Crawford and Zobrist are pretty good, but Zobrist hasn’t been nearly as good as he was last year and Crawford will be gone after this season. And as LSJ said above, Ludwick is gone from St. Louis.

That means next season the closest set of COFers to Hamilton and Cruz are Gardner and Swisher? Obviously that could change with FA and trades, especially if someone like Crawford were to go to the NYY.

Still, I can’t believe how much better those two guys are than what every other team is running out there right now. And if they stay healthy, I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Right on

Plus, Swisher is getting up there in years…and then who? Wow, what huge drop off.

Nice work!

Would be weird, but not impossible, to see Crawford go to the Yankees

Swisher (9M) and Granderson (8.25M) are both under contract, and Gardner will be in his last year of cheap control. Of course, both Johnson and Berkman can/will come off the books, so they could theoretically stick Swisher at DH or move Granderson to the 4th outfielder.

My guess with Crawford is that he stays in Tampa. Just a hunch, though.

Interesting theory

It’d be tough for that ownership group to stomach, though, unless he gives them a big discount.

Cruz

Just curious if anybody had a distance on Nellie’s home run last night. MLB Gameday made it look like about 550’.

That was RangerFloppy fucking with everyone

You can check real distance here, although last night’s is not up yet:

Just a fantasy, but...

I daydream sometimes of the Rangers signing Crawford and moving him to CF with Hamilton and Cruz on the corners. I have no doubt Crawford could and would become an outstanding CF.
I know it won’t happen, but it is a fun dream.

He last played CF in '08, and was pretty bad

That surprises me.

Oh well, in my dream he was a hell of a cf’er, though. Maybe Borbon grows as a hitter after his struggles this year. I would be good with that too.

He played seven innings worth of CF in 2008.

You can’t possibly make a judgement on how good of a CF he would be based on seven innings worth of play. In total, he has logged a total of 409 innings in CF, has a fielding percentage of .993 and a cumulative UZR/150 of 9.2, so there is more good than bad at this point.

I’m not sure of the reports of him saying he wouldn’t move to left field, but I’m sure he has the skill to be able to play center.

Good stuff

If only the team had a CF that they trusted so they could keep Hambone as a “corner outfielder” 90% of the time.

Thanks.

Looks a little buggy in some places, but at least it’s there. Funny thing is I could’ve sworn I tried that several times. Either I pasted it as plain text or I was to tired to know what the hell I was doing, because it always turned out awful.

He did it

in deference to the rest of the league. A 2.3 WAR lead is just embarrassing to everyone else.

But seriously, Cruz, just be healthy in the playoffs.

To ACWNS09

As a grad of ACU, I don’t mind you using the school logo. But if you do, may I request you at least clean up your language? I’ve reviewed some of your posts and I don’t want filthy language just millimeters away from my school’s emblem.

I’m sure the school doesn’t want that kind of pub, either.

Thanks.
