Minors 8/14 and the PTBNL

The Rangers have acquired Class A catcher Michael Thomas from the Red Sox as the player to be named later in the Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade. The Rangers are sending him to Arizona and converting him to a pitcher. They had some success doing that when they took Alexi Ogando in the Minor League phase in the Rule 5 Draft. He was an outfielder for Oakland but A.J. Preller, who had scouted him in the Dominican Republic, suggested he be turned into a pitcher.

From T.R. Michael Thomas is not good at hitting the baseball. Seriously. Don't even bother looking at his stats becasue it's depressing.

Engel Beltre was activated from the DL for Frisco today.

That’s probably the best prospect news we’ve got at the moment.

I was wondering why he left the game early last night.

It is too early now, but there is going to be a contentious debate on the playoff roster at the end of Sept. Gentry had a shot to make it since teams drop pitchers and add position players.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 15, 2010 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

I’m a little irrational when it comes to him. He’s going to be really good. So much natural talent as both a hitter and pitcher. He has 16 BB in 78 PA for 18U USA team, with only 12 SO. On one of the webcasts, I saw him hit a 400+ ft HR to the opposite field.

by Tex2044 on Aug 15, 2010 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

He played on the same 18U team with Ragira

Ragira might be the more developed hitter right now, but I think Starling has more projection. Starling is also consistently one of the fastest players at the different showcases. He ran a 6.5 60 @ the perfect game showcase, the fastest time there. He then ran a 6.53 @ the area code games. I thin it was the 4th or 5th best time. This is all from a 6’5 200lb CF.

by Tex2044 on Aug 15, 2010 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Is he a better pitcher

or an OF?

I am hoping that since he looks like he needs a high contract to sign that he falls to the bottom of the first round.

Depends on who you ask

Seiler and Frankie P have said a hitter. Keith Law said Pitcher, but he said he’s ridiculously talented either way. Jim Callis said he’ll be given every chance to succeed as a hitter because it’s easier to go back to pitching. I agree with Callis. I think he’ll be a CF for a while, and then see how he fills out. I’m really hoping he falls to the Rangers and they take him. I don’t think there’s much doubt that he’ll sign(well as much as you can know a year out), it will just take some cash becaue he is a legitimate top prospect in football.

I live near a lot of Husker fans

I don't think it will be anything ridiculous

I think he really does want to play baseball. A long time before the draft though. This is the first year I’ve followed prospects this long before the draft. I’m intrigued by Blake Swihart as well. I’ve read in at least 1 place that he can stick at Catcher. He by far had the most power on the 18U USA team this past summer.

I know. I first sarted following him while Notre Dame was recruiting him.

He’s a better QB prospect than Zach Lee, but he’s not nearly as set on going to college. The rumors have gotten progressively stronger that he wants to play baseball all summer.

So, about Brian Ragira

I doubt our people have even spoken with his people, but I really wish we could have gotten something done. I talked to a good friend of mine’s dad (baseball coach in DFW) about a month ago at the friend’s wedding who says Ragira has the most potential of any hitter he’s ever coached against. Kept going on and on about him after I brought him up.

Barring injury, the kid has all of the makings of a total stud.

Yup

I think the best scenario in Spokane would have been for him to survive without being overmatched. I’d say he’s achieved that.

Rijo doing work for the AZL Rangers

5 innings of 1-hit ball with 5 Ks and 2 BBs.

He has a 1-0 lead as of this moment, but our AZL’ers are also getting 1-hit.

Buckel in for AZL to pitch the eighth.

Team has still only allowed 1H, Haase came in for the seventh and struck out one, walked one.

michael_schlact Got word today that I’m going to move into the bullpen & be a reliever the remainder of the season. Great opportunity to broaden my skills.

Interesting

With the starters we’ve got in the bigs and in the pipeline, there’s probably little or no chance he ever gets a chance to start for the Rangers. I wonder if they’ve seen something out of him that indicates he’s be effective in relief and want to add him to our seemingly unlimited cache of relief prospects/trade chips.

He is nothing more then org. fodder.

Teams need guys like Doug Mathis and Elizardo Ramirez. They need pitchers that they can use and abuse in order to limit the workload of thier prospects. Schlact falls into this category.

by RangerMad on Aug 16, 2010 8:23 AM CDT up reply actions

If you're just going to use and abuse Schlacht, why move him to the bullpen?

I agree with the premise of your post, and the Lizard seems like the prime example of that.

But with all the recent defections from Frisco, I don’t see why they’d move one of their starters out of the rotation unless they had something in mind.

When JD, Thad, & AJ are involved, I think there’s always a plan behind it.

you're probably right

They may think he is only a 2 pitch pitcher and want to see if he can maximize his value as a RP. Maybe they want to limit his innings due to his injuries. I don’t expect much from him.

Workman

Remember when we were all worried th Rangers would take him as the “signability” pick? Looks like he might not even sign. Who knows, maybe he would have signed for slot if we took him at 15 or 22, just thought it was interesting. I’m happy with our draft, especially with Tepesch in the fold and a great shot at adding Grimm.

Kevin_Goldstein More confident than Keith, but hardly a lock. RT @Morgansnmsu: @Kevin_Goldstein Keith Law seems to think Workman doesn’t sign. What say you?

I think

a huge part of it is also Skole holding his own in A-. If he was putting up bad #s in rookie ball, I’m sure a lot of us would be freaking out, as irrational as it seems.

Doyle

Didn’t realize he was in Bakersfield. He was someone I put on my watch list after last year. He had a nice K/9 and k/bb but was a little hittable. He was relegated to the Hickory bullpen this year and did OK in limited IP. I just thought that the Rangers didn’t like something about him and put him in the non-prospect category. After a short stint at Spokane he is now pitching at Bakersfield.

Anyone know if it was just a spot start for him or is he actually in the rotation?

yeah, or maybe a higher minor league salary?

Can they do that? Maybe it’s the level that he starts at? Or a guaranteed time as a starter? A promise to never refer to him as “The Brothers’ Grimm”? A guarantee that he’ll never have to pitch in Bakersfield? A lifetime supply of pixie stix?
