Minors 8/14 and the PTBNL
The Rangers have acquired Class A catcher Michael Thomas from the Red Sox as the player to be named later in the Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade. The Rangers are sending him to Arizona and converting him to a pitcher. They had some success doing that when they took Alexi Ogando in the Minor League phase in the Rule 5 Draft. He was an outfielder for Oakland but A.J. Preller, who had scouted him in the Dominican Republic, suggested he be turned into a pitcher.
From T.R. Michael Thomas is not good at hitting the baseball. Seriously. Don't even bother looking at his stats becasue it's depressing.

Yay!
LoneStarDugout Rangers promoted James Tomlin to AAA and activated Engel Beltre from the DL. Never saw that he was actually placed on the DL.
Guess I have a reason to go tonight now.
otherwise i wasn’t going out in 103f temps

Engel Beltre was activated from the DL for Frisco today.
That’s probably the best prospect news we’ve got at the moment.

Dunno, just remember I thought he was gonna be great.
Google seems to indicate Jr. is going to LSU.

I was wondering why he left the game early last night.
It is too early now, but there is going to be a contentious debate on the playoff roster at the end of Sept. Gentry had a shot to make it since teams drop pitchers and add position players.
Wasn't able to make it to Hickory
Will chart Ramirez from here on out, and then Roman Mendez later on tonight.
Nothing official...
I imagine MLB is stopping the Rangers from making it official since it’s an over slot deal.

Draft
So considering everything, everyone pretty happy with the draft class? Seems like it can be described as toolsy but raw. They need some hitting talent in the system and it seems they added some talent – now if they pan out is something else.
TBR has to be considered the buzzword for this class.
Dripping with potential. Very much a boom/bust class.

Re: Michael Thomas - per my Red Sox pen pal --
Michael Thomas——Not even in my top 120 prospects. Nor in my top 10 catchers. Drafted in the 12th round last year. Minnie Mouse bonus. Good field presence, poor at throwing guys out[30%]. Power, but no contact skillz. Lets just say you better hope you can convert him to a pitcher and his arm is better then his stats.
So Erlin hasnt really taken too well to being back in th pen

Just ones that, never really hit well at any level for much time, ones that couldn’t make contact if they used a table leg and ones that can’t play catcher

They were saying that the staff were working with him before the game on his throws to 2nd and that he looked way off.
I've never seen anyone lose it like he has.
I’d say it’s mental, which is could definitely be with regard to defense, but his swing plane is totally off, he has no idea where the ball will be at any given time in the zone, and he looks like he will just never put it back together.

Yo, quick question
is Bubba Starling a right handed bat?
"If the Saints can reach the Superbowl, the Rangers can reach the World Series." - PhilKid
The Animated Ballpark in Arlington
Yes
I’m a little irrational when it comes to him. He’s going to be really good. So much natural talent as both a hitter and pitcher. He has 16 BB in 78 PA for 18U USA team, with only 12 SO. On one of the webcasts, I saw him hit a 400+ ft HR to the opposite field.
He played on the same 18U team with Ragira
Ragira might be the more developed hitter right now, but I think Starling has more projection. Starling is also consistently one of the fastest players at the different showcases. He ran a 6.5 60 @ the perfect game showcase, the fastest time there. He then ran a 6.53 @ the area code games. I thin it was the 4th or 5th best time. This is all from a 6’5 200lb CF.
Is he a better pitcher
or an OF?
I am hoping that since he looks like he needs a high contract to sign that he falls to the bottom of the first round.
"If the Saints can reach the Superbowl, the Rangers can reach the World Series." - PhilKid

Depends on who you ask
Seiler and Frankie P have said a hitter. Keith Law said Pitcher, but he said he’s ridiculously talented either way. Jim Callis said he’ll be given every chance to succeed as a hitter because it’s easier to go back to pitching. I agree with Callis. I think he’ll be a CF for a while, and then see how he fills out. I’m really hoping he falls to the Rangers and they take him. I don’t think there’s much doubt that he’ll sign(well as much as you can know a year out), it will just take some cash becaue he is a legitimate top prospect in football.
I live near a lot of Husker fans
and they keep comparing him to the Carl Crawford situation. I don’t think it will take Purke money, but I can very well see it taking enough to eclipse say, Justin Smoak’s bonus.
"If the Saints can reach the Superbowl, the Rangers can reach the World Series." - PhilKid
The Animated Ballpark in Arlington
I don't think it will be anything ridiculous
I think he really does want to play baseball. A long time before the draft though. This is the first year I’ve followed prospects this long before the draft. I’m intrigued by Blake Swihart as well. I’ve read in at least 1 place that he can stick at Catcher. He by far had the most power on the 18U USA team this past summer.
I'm curious about this year's high-school class, especially considering the college class is so incredible.
Could be an epic draft, I hope we can get a ton of picks.
"When I want my men to remember something important, to really make it stick, I give it to them double dirty."- General George S. Patton
Starling is probably the most highly-sought dual-threat QB since Vince Young in college recruiting.
I don’t think anyone actually believes he’ll play college football, but he has a powerful tool.
He’s going to want a dumptruck full of money.
"When I want my men to remember something important, to really make it stick, I give it to them double dirty."- General George S. Patton
I know. I first sarted following him while Notre Dame was recruiting him.
He’s a better QB prospect than Zach Lee, but he’s not nearly as set on going to college. The rumors have gotten progressively stronger that he wants to play baseball all summer.
Back her up

So, about Brian Ragira
I doubt our people have even spoken with his people, but I really wish we could have gotten something done. I talked to a good friend of mine’s dad (baseball coach in DFW) about a month ago at the friend’s wedding who says Ragira has the most potential of any hitter he’s ever coached against. Kept going on and on about him after I brought him up.

Interesting
With the starters we’ve got in the bigs and in the pipeline, there’s probably little or no chance he ever gets a chance to start for the Rangers. I wonder if they’ve seen something out of him that indicates he’s be effective in relief and want to add him to our seemingly unlimited cache of relief prospects/trade chips.

Teams need guys like Doug Mathis and Elizardo Ramirez. They need pitchers that they can use and abuse in order to limit the workload of thier prospects. Schlact falls into this category.
If you're just going to use and abuse Schlacht, why move him to the bullpen?
I agree with the premise of your post, and the Lizard seems like the prime example of that.
But with all the recent defections from Frisco, I don’t see why they’d move one of their starters out of the rotation unless they had something in mind.

I would run like hell if I saw him coming towards me out on the lot
I’m afraid he would do something like convince me to buy a Lamborghini and then flip it to him for a 1989 Lebaron, with me picking up the tax and title on both.

Workman
Remember when we were all worried th Rangers would take him as the “signability” pick? Looks like he might not even sign. Who knows, maybe he would have signed for slot if we took him at 15 or 22, just thought it was interesting. I’m happy with our draft, especially with Tepesch in the fold and a great shot at adding Grimm.
Kevin_Goldstein More confident than Keith, but hardly a lock. RT @Morgansnmsu: @Kevin_Goldstein Keith Law seems to think Workman doesn’t sign. What say you?
I think
a huge part of it is also Skole holding his own in A-. If he was putting up bad #s in rookie ball, I’m sure a lot of us would be freaking out, as irrational as it seems.

Doyle
Didn’t realize he was in Bakersfield. He was someone I put on my watch list after last year. He had a nice K/9 and k/bb but was a little hittable. He was relegated to the Hickory bullpen this year and did OK in limited IP. I just thought that the Rangers didn’t like something about him and put him in the non-prospect category. After a short stint at Spokane he is now pitching at Bakersfield.
Anyone know if it was just a spot start for him or is he actually in the rotation?
Someone else please start the minors thread, I'm in court this afternoon

DSL team won again last night, I believe.

Actually, I have no idea.
I can’t find any record of the game, though it was supposed to be played.

According to Jason Cole, they lost.
Winning streak over at 15.

LoneStarDugout DSL Rangers’ winning streak ended at 15 yesterday. But they beat the Braves today to clinch a division title and a playoff spot.
ysportsncaabb My main man @aaronfitt saying Justin Grimm (Georgia) is signing with #Rangers for $825K. UGA expected this for some time. #UGA
"No nuts, no glory"
aaronfitt Georgia RHP Justin Grimm (Rangers, 5th) has agreed to terms for an $825,000 bonus—"with good incentives," per source. #mlbdraft

yeah, or maybe a higher minor league salary?
Can they do that? Maybe it’s the level that he starts at? Or a guaranteed time as a starter? A promise to never refer to him as “The Brothers’ Grimm”? A guarantee that he’ll never have to pitch in Bakersfield? A lifetime supply of pixie stix?
