Rangers, Boston complete Saltalamacchia trade

Per T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers have completed the trade with Boston for Jarrod Saltalamacchia by getting Michael Thomas as the player to be named later.

Thomas is a catcher in A ball who the Rangers will be assigning to Arizona, where he will convert to pitching.

Which means this guy probably has mid 90s heat, solid command, will be taught a slider this fall...

And will rocket through our system, working out of the big league pen by 2012 and becoming an All Star closer in 2013.

"There's been talk that closers aren't as effective when used back to back games,

so I’m just going to fill up the bullpen with nothing but All Star closers so that it really doesn’t matter which one gets used in which game." /JD

"We just feel it's better if everyone in our bullpen can throw at least 95 with dirty secondary stuff

We’re also instituting, new for the 2014 season, a policy of having only Cy Young winners in our rotation. That’s why we’re happy to announce that Adam Wainwright will be joining Cliff, Martin, Zack, and Derek in the rotation.

Bullpen

Have a bullpen full of gas and heat. Have a 7th inning closer, 8th inning closer and 9th. Starters can go atleast 6 can’t they?

Apparently, he was a 12th rounder in last year's draft.

That would explain the PTBNL part, perhaps? Not sure when he signed. In any case, I’m glad they didn’t take him for his hitting skills. Dude’s getting blown away in Low-A hitting .156/.269/.267 and striking out in nearly half of his at-bats (42 in 90 ABs). I suppose I trust Preller and the rest in identifying the kid as a good project to take on.

Blurb from Boston.com when he was drafted
As a junior, Thomas, 20, hit .294 with a .980 fielding percentage behind the plate. He was considered by some as the best defensive catcher in the nation and was voted the top catcher in his conference by the conference’s coaches. He suffered a broken hand earlier this year, but still was .980 in the field and had one home run and 10 RBIs in 18 games. Reports suggest that he is a very good defensive catcher with a rocket arm. Rangers fans on Facebook are debating whether the Red Sox are "trash" and if it's a good idea to trade for their crappy players

Good grief the Rangers FB is a dumb place.

had we bet in April that Cantu was backing up Blanco against the Red Sox in Mid-August.
