OT: Death of 2010 Cowboys, the brutal schedule

Here's the schedule:

@Washington

Chicago

@Houston

Tennessee

@Minnesota

New York Giants

Jacksonville

@Green Bay

@New York Giants

Detroit

New Orleans

@Indianapolis

Philadelphia

Washington

@Arizona

@Philadelphia

That schedule is absolutely BRUTAL.

First of all remember that Washington is going to a lot better because of the Shanahan's and McNabb. But it gets worse. IMO Philly very well will likely be BETTER with Kolb instead of McNabb. Andy Reid/Mornhinweg is a stud and now he has a decent pocket passer? Ouch. The Giants could be better too. Their potent offense of Gilbride and Manning remains, but now they'll have a new defensive coordinator. And defense was by far their weakness last year. I mean even if things dont work out for them, they'll at least be dangerous.

It's just absolutely brutal.

Then we have some of the other games you might think are easy. Like Chicago. But wait, Chicago has Martz this year, so that's not going to be an easy game either.

@Indy? @Houston? @Green Bay? New Orleans? @Minnesota? @Arizona? All just brutal games (with exception of Houston who wont have any defense, but still could be a tough game)

Just look at the games with imo a degree of difficulty of 5.0 on a 5 point scale. IMO you’ve got no less than 4, @Minn (assuming Favre), @GB, @Indy, New Orleans

Just brutal.

I see exactly two "easy" games all year. Detroit and Jacksonville. And Jacksonville won 7 games last year.

I dont know, I have my doubts Garrett is good enough to get it done. I think the Cowboys are one of the 3-4 top teams in the NFC, but they dont stand out. My blueprint for success after last year, I decided by far our best shot was to rack up a great regular season record and get homefield throughout the playoff. I dont think this is the 92 Cowboys just loaded with power or anything, we need to catch some breaks and roll downhill to emerge from the pack.

Bottom line this team COULD have went to the Super Bowl this year, but with that schedule, I have my doubts. Even 10-6 might be a hard task. I hope I'm wrong.

Have I ever mentioned this posting software is just beyond awful? I blame AJM for being a liberal and making his blog on a website funded by George Soros.

Makes me feel better

Still, I see all those first 5 as “tough” games anyway. I mean are you prepared to bet the Boys might not accidentally be 3-2 or something? Theyre all tough, maybe we’ll be favored in 4, but string tough games together and losses start happening.

Hell I’m just remembering last year, much easier schedule, tons of patsies, and playoffs were touch and go most of the year.

And I pretty much thought Favre back was a given? IMO it is, anyway. I doubt the Vikings didn’t go out and get a QB this offseason without internally being pretty damn sure Favre was coming back, regardless of media shenanigans.

imo

@ Washington, Chicago, Tennessee, NY, Jacksonville, Detroit, Phili, Washington, and @ Arizona are good bets to win, which would be 9.
Of the rest, even if the Cowboys play around .500, that’s still around 3 wins, which is more than possible.
Assuming you lose one of the top ones I talked about, I think, realistically, an 11-5 and #2 seed in the NFC is probably what’ll happen.

Their numbers are good. The analysis is hit or miss, but I trust their math.

by rlb02a on Aug 15, 2010 8:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Meaningless

A site like that isn’t giving any credit to huge factors like that the Giants have a new DC and could be a lot better, that the Skins will probably be a LOT better, that Chicago has Martz now (which doesn’t mean they’ll be world beaters, but does very likely mean they’ll be at least an 8-8 team) etc. A site like that probably goes “oh, Eagles lost McNabb, big negative” when I suspect the Eagles might be BETTER with Kolb, they scare me.

In other words it’s a typical blind site ignoring the situation of coordinators year to year, which is ridiculously important.

by Sharky on Aug 15, 2010 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

But I will agree

Judging a schedule before the season is a little tough. However, since I know coordinators are what matter, I certainly do it far better than most, ala the above analysis.

Even with the above analysis though, there’s wiggle room. The Redskins might take a year or two to get rolling, for example. And I still dont think McNabb is a good QB when the chips are down. I’m just discussing the most likely possibilities.

by Sharky on Aug 15, 2010 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

This is ludicrous. You have no idea what they said about anybody's defensive coordinators.

Interestingly enough

I have the opposite belief. Their projections are generally way off-base, but the theoretical work they do is interesting and has some merit. Tracking things for DBs and linemen, for example… they do that well. They’ve also impressed me with that list of prospects. Win projections? Schedule strength? Pythag has regularly outperformed DVOA.

I like them

I find that reading them gives me a different take on many aspects. It’s useful even if you just take it from the perspective of ‘these guys chart every single NFL game’ which most analysts don’t have the time to do.

But their injury/lack of depth argument every year is getting really frustrating. I’m not saying I expect the Cowboys to win 12 games like many fans do, but holy crap 7.5!?

by GhettoBear04 on Aug 15, 2010 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I should clarify. I like their raw data. Projected wins, etc. can be dicey, but I believe in Schedule Strength and the like

DVOA is admittedly a little shaky, but as GhettoBear says below, at least they chart every single game.

Put it this way: I trust their numbers more than anybody else’s, because they’re on the cutting edge. There is significant room for improvement, but they’re doing better than ESPN or Sharky, for example.

I haven't looked

But I strongly doubt it.

You’re probably just another yahoo judging things on last years records. You cant do that. The Giants could be a lot better cause of a new DC, the Redskins likely will be a lot better, and the Eagles aren’t going to fall of and Kolb could be a lot better than McNabb. That’s 6 games right there that the “media” and most fans are going to underrate the difficulty of. But sharky isn’t.

I still see a lot more easy games than Cowboys though.

Bills twice
Cleveland
The Dolphins aren’t scary imo, 2X easy games there.
I dont even know about Cincy, haven’t followed their coordinator situation, but they could well suck.
Pittsburgh isn’t what they used to be.
You get the Pack and Minnesota at home, we get them on road. Practically double the difficulty.

I’d take your schedule over ours in a heartbeat.

by GhettoBear04 on Aug 15, 2010 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

It is always tough to predict schedules this early...

Arizona- Who believes that Leinart can carry that team? I don’t
Washington- Who knows what effect McNabb has, but I thought he was a major reason the Eagles season fell apart. I doubt the Eagles would deal him to the redskins if they felt he made a huge difference.
Chicago-Martz is overrated. Cutler does not have the WR’s too improve much on what he had last year, and he will still be a turnover machine.
Detriot- I think they could be better this year, but that defense is still not good.
Houston – See Detriot…

As far as the NFC east goes, you know it will be tough fought wins and most likely splits with all 3 teams.

N.O., Indy, and Minn are tough games to win, but the Cowboys always seem to win a few that they shouldn’t…..and lose a few that they should.

We will be right there again fighting for the division title and a WC….10 to 11 wins.

by death of the cool on Aug 15, 2010 1:01 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmm...

AZ: I agree. Arizona isn’t going to be that great. Fitzy getting hurt this last game won’t help.
Wash: See Angels/Ranger per Vlad. I don’t like taking any NFC East lightly.
Chi: Totally agree. Cutler will just get frustrated with their WR’s and force things. INT city baby.
Det: One more year away from being talked about.
Houston: Dallas gets them early and I think that will help. Shoot out.

by GhettoBear04 on Aug 16, 2010 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Green Bay, NO, Minnesota, and Indy...

is salty as hell… But the Cowboys are more than good enough to compete with those teams..

Gotta always wonder about the division road games, too… But the Cowboys are the most talented team in the division and they’re better than the other six teams on the schedule…

I don’t believe in the Redskins. Offensive line still sucks, McNabb isn’t that Donovan McNabb, and they still kinda suck at running back and receiver…

I wonder about Philly because I love, love, love the receivers and LeSean McCoy… Playing into Kolb’s strengths and getting the ball in Maclin and Jackson’s hands on quick, short patterns and letting them run could be really, really scary…

The Giants, who knows… I still don’t trust Eli Manning.

Say 4-2 in the division, 5-1 against the other six, and split the Big Four… 11-5 is a damn good year and seems very much within reach. 10-6 probably still gets the playoffs…

Now I’m psyched. Looks like everybody is already calling for him to move up to second string over Quinn.

It’s just so big that he ended up with a great OC in McDaniels. McDaniels will get guys running wide open for him. That’s what good OC’s do.

But eye opening was the commentators comment that Tebow is 245 pounds. Wow, didn’t realize that.
