Rich Harden to the disabled list, Brandon Boggs up
Well, it appears Nelson Cruz's tight hamstring may have cost Rich Harden his roster spot...
Per the S-T, the Rangers have put Harden on the d.l., and are recalling Brandon Boggs from AAA. Boggs will be outfield insurance for the Rangers while they wait and see what happens with Cruz's hamstring.
This means that Pedro Strop, who was expected to be sent down today to make room for Boggs, lives for another day. He could be sent down to make room for Derek Holland, should the Rangers decide to put Holland in the rotation, or he could stick if Scott Feldman makes Harden's scheduled start on Tuesday.

Kirkman might have pitched both of the last two nights.
They moved him to the ’pen this week.

Has anyone seen a list of waived players?
That may be a decent option pending an update on Nellie.

Not sure there is a comprehensive list, though if there is I’d love to see it.
it was reported a few days ago that Carlos Beltran cleared. Can’t think offhand of any other potential candidates for us who are reported to have cleared.

Holland would be pitching on 3 days rest
They aren’t going to do that. It will be Feldman.

I thought that was why they pulled him early last time
So he could come back in three days and match up with the fifth starter’s slot.
That was reported by someone.

It was to get him synced up with the fifth spot
He’ll pitch on Tuesday. I would be surprised if they pitched him in Texas, though.
No reason not to go with Feldman, just for Tuesday.

Holland only thre 58 pitches the other night in 2.1 innings.
I say throw Holland but have Feldman ready should he not be able to go deep.

Why?
Other than, we just want to see Holland?
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 15, 2010 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Because I think Holland would, given the chance, post better results than Feldman.

He's still coming back from injury
Was bad in his last outing, hasn’t been great so far in the minors since returning from his injury, and would be pitching on three days rest.
I think that’s problematic, particularly if you think Harden is going to be back next Sunday to start then.
Let Holland pitch Tuesday in the minors and work on getting back on track and getting his pitch count back up, and let Feldman get the start on Tuesday.

Tuesday's start
First, I don’t think Harden will be eligible to come off the DL next Sunday. He went on retroactive to 8/8, so he’s not eligible to come off for the start next Sunday. Thus, we need someone for at least two starts, not one.
Second, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Harden parked on the DL until Sept. 1, for obvious roster management reasons.
Third, Holland has now had four AAA starts on his rehab assignment. Given that Feldman pitched on Friday night and hasn’t been in the rotation for several turns, I don’t think Feldman has any better chance of getting into the 6th than Holland does.
Fourth, if you look at their entire body of work this year, Holland has clearly been better than Feldman. HIs AAA numbers are a sub-2.00 ERA, and his limited major league starts were better than Feldman.
For those reasons, I don’t think there’s any doubt that if you are just considering who is the better option for Tuesday night between Feldman and Holland, Holland is the choice. Now, given the current injury situations with Cruz and Francisco, it may make sense to give Feldman the start to preserve the roster spot for other reasons, but not because Feldman is a better starting pitcher than Holland right now.
FInally, if you are really worried about starting Holland on three days rest (a situation that could have easily been averted until minimal forethought), you can come with Hunter on Tuesday and Holland on Wednesday, since Hunter only threw 50 pitches Friday night. That also makes Harden an option the next time the 5th spot comes up in the rotation.

Holland
How many pitches did Holland throw Friday?
I don’t understand why they didn’t pitch Holland on Thursday night in Frisco. He ended up getting five days rest and off Harden’s schedule because of Oklahoma’s off day, which could have easily been avoided.

I don't understand...
why this team won’t just cut bait with dead weight like Harden and Arias.
Is is just a clubhouse thing? Or do they really not want to lose these guys because they feel they can contribute something?

Why cut them if you don't have to
Harden and Arias on the DL doesn’t hurt the team and lets you have them in case something goes horribly wrong or something goes ridiculously right with those players.

I'm happy with this move.
IMO, if the front office is looking past the AL West division crown and looking at securing a first round home playoff series (not necessarily from a competitive advantage, but more for a financial gain) I think you have to give up on Harden for the rest of the year. While Feldman has no doubt been shaky all year, he gives you more innings. And if Holland is healthy, he’s a better option.
Would love to see Boggs contribute. Seems like he’s been jockeying for a spot all year.
