Tommy Hunter to start Tuesday, Derek Holland to start Wednesday
Per T.R. Sullivan, Tommy Hunter is going to start for the Rangers on Tuesday on short rest, and Derek Holland will start Wednesday.
Hunter will be coming back on three days rest after giving up 4 homers in his 3 inning, vomit-shortened outing on Friday.
Holland will be pitching on normal rest.

How many starts do you think he will get the rest of the year?
Innings won’t be an issue. He certainly needs the experience if he is going to be in the roto next year.
if he doesnt suck
he wont be coming out of the rotation for the next however many years.
who cares about next year
at this point he has nothing left to prove in the minors
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
3-5
But it will be interesting to see how it shapes out, if they keep the 4 playoff guys (assumed) on 5 days rest and skip a start or two of Holland.

I don't think they are skipping the 5th spot
With an 8.5 game lead and concern over the number of innings thrown by Wilson and Lewis, I don’t think they are going to skip the 5th spot the rest of the way.
In fact, I think you could see Wilson and Lewis get skipped or at least pushed back some in September when the roster expands.
by Darrell McKown on Aug 15, 2010 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think skipping when you don't have to should be happening.
The division is all but over. I do think homefield in the first round would be helpful, but not so much you wear out the pitchers more than you need to.
I go back and forth on this.
I think homefield advantage in the playoffs—particularly in the first round—is very important, especially for a team that lacks a lot of playoff experience. But having Lee and Lewis and Wilson (?) at 100% is probably more important than where we open the ALDS. I guess it might also depend on the matchup. I’ve got no problem traveling to TB for games 1 and 2, but I wouldn’t feel so great about heading to the Bronx.
Why the ? after Wilson?
He is clearly one of our three best pitchers, and may be our second best right now.
by Darrell McKown on Aug 15, 2010 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions
I guess the (?) has a lot to do with my concern that he'll hit a wall with the jump in innings.
The only two guys I have unconditional faith in going into the playoffs are Lee and Lewis.
Wilson
He’s pitched more innings than Lewis, has a better ERA, a better batting average against, and has given up half as many home runs. I understand the concern over his innings, but he isn’t showing any signs of even bumping into a wall and we are in the middle of August.

Colby has been the better pitcher.
Lewis: 3.48 FIP, 3.84 xFIP, 3.4 WAR, .285 BABIP, 17.4% LD%, 8.2% HR/FB
Wilson: 3.95 FIP, 4.56 xFIP, 2.5 WAR, .261 BABIP, 16.4% LD%, 5.8% HR/FB

I think it's really close
I think WIlson’s stuff helps drive the lower BABIP and HR/FB percentage. Regardless, I think they are close enough that I’m equally confident with either one pitching in a playoff game.

He might not maintain it for next year
but its not out of the realm of possibility for him to maintain it for this season.

I agree with that.
But if we’re talking about who’s contributed the most I advocate considering batted ball rates. But if we’re talking who we’re going to bank on going forward, I’m going to regress both BABIP rates.
I wouldn't disagree with you if you did that
but I just wouldn’t be shocked at all if his BABIP stayed around this level for the rest of the season.
And for CJ specifically, I do think he is a special case. One of the reasons his FIP/xFIP looks worse than Lewis’ is because of the walks. Some of that is on him, but I’m convinced that a lot of it is also on the shitty umpires who can’t get a good handle of the movement on his pitches and think he’s throwing balls when he’s hitting the corners. CJ still doesn’t have perfect control, but he’s been doing a better job of that recently and as he continues to establish himself as a top pitcher, umpires will probably start giving him the benefit of the doubt more.

I think that is a very reasonable outlook on Ceej and his strike calls
In terms of the BABiP keep in mind that while batters are trying to adjust to him, he is trying to stay one step ahead and adjust to them as well. He’s got a mindset to not let opponents “solve” him. The BP writeup/interview gave really good insight on his preparation. I don’t think the BABiP will regress much unless he gets injured. When he struggled for a couple of games in May he had strained his trapezius and his delivery was affected. The last Seattle outing he was sick.

CJ says "Relax"
You don't think it will regress much?
What is much? I mean, it’s at .261. Greg Maddux is notable for having his in the low .280s.
Which I'm pretty sure is the lowest of any pitcher to have a decent career since 1993.
So keeping it 20 points below average is unheard of, let alone almost 40.
do you think Cliff Lee can keep his K/BB ratio that amazing?
No I don’t think CJ can keep it up forever. I think the physical wear and aging will force a regression over the next few years. But the key is that every single pitch he throws for a specific batter has a specific purpose. If there was ever an explanation for such a BABiP that would be it.
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
This sounds a lot like the

this is true
if Feldman came with the same repertoire as last year, mainly his moment on his 2seam and cutter then maybe it would be a different story, but he just wasn’t the same pitcher.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I wasn't aware that Scooter put that much prep into his games?
what CJ told us is that he scouts ever batter to see what sequence of pitches he thinks will work on him. Kinda of like memorizing the old Rubik’s Cube moves.
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
Has no one ever put this much prep in to games?
And is that the missing piece to getting the ball to go for outs this much more often than anyone else?
I do think that’s possible, but to contend it as likely seems like wishful thinking.
You would be surprised
While some pitchers like Lee study and prepare other pitchers are out deep sea fishing and drinking for 8 hours
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
I would not be surprised if he puts more effort in to it than most pitchers.
I would be surprised if he puts so much more effort than any other pitcher that he can do things they can’t to a huge degree.
In this case, of course, I would love to be surprised. I like this Ceej.
I think you hit on the key words there
CJ could end up having a lower than average BABIP due to the amount of work he puts in to study hitters and to increase his chances of inducing poor contact. But the problem is still that its out of his control where and who that poor contact is hit towards.
Also, the prep work CJ does is going to help him get a lot of strikeouts, which of course don’t count one way or another towards BABIP. Its about putting the ball where the hitter either can’t hit it or won’t make good contact with the ball, not just one or the other.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
Except:
Wilson’s not recording that many strikeouts. A 6.86 K/9 is not only not especially good, it’s only 26th out of 51 qualified AL starters.
Wouldn’t it seem strange that Wilson’s approach would be so exceptional that he could depress opponents’ BABiP consistently, but he’d be below the median in terms of striking them out? Wouldn’t you think that with so much work put into analyzing opposing batters, Wilson would also be striking them out at an above-average clip?
And it’s not like the whole “pitching to contact” argument holds a lot of water here, since he walks so many batters, (Unless, of course, we’re chalking that all up to the envious umps.)
Envious umps
Well if you believe, like I do, that he’s getting screwed on strikes being called balls, you would then believe that he should be getting more strikeouts to go along with his decreased number of walks.
And CJ does a hell of a job of preparing for each start and when he’s on, he’s fun to watch pitch. But he’s still not Cliff Lee yet and his control is legitimately off for some games too.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

We disagree here because
we disagree about how much Wilson’s responsible for his own K and BB rates.
He’s been on the end of some bad calls, but to believe it’s fundamentally shifted his peripherals — and more than any/most pitchers in the league — I’d need to see evidence.
And the Granderson call, for example, wouldn’t do it for me.

Quick: what's Lee's BABIP
for this season, and over his career?
by Josh Garoon on Aug 16, 2010 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions
I think that's more likely than someone keeping a BABIP 40 points below average.
Strike outs and walks are a much more repeatable skill than controlling balls hit in play.
Further, K/BB rate normalizes within a full season for a starter, BABIP doesn’t.
If Colby Lewis is actually able to maintain a BABIP that low over a large sample, then he is able to do things other pitchers are not. It’s entirely possible, but not a safe bet.
that, and the guy is on a historic pace
for being completely untouchable against lefties. his BABIP will increase mainly because teams are all now stacking RHs against him to negate his dominance against lefties.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
And you do sound just a little bit like you have a rooting interest that might be getting in the way of this, sir.
Robbie you just watched a guy go nearly 8 shutout innings in 105-106 heat
against an offense juggernaut. I would think his body of work would speak for itself. You can play with the numbers all day but they don’t provide all the answers. If they did Justin Smoak wouldn’t be in Tacoma right now

Also. . .
You’re essentially telling me the reason I should go against the best evidence is because you like the guy and know his prep habits. And those habits will probably, instead of merely possibly, help him do something historic.
You see why that’s unconvincing, right?
I did not say .261 is achievable over a career.
If you accept that BABiP may be influenced by the pitcher, historical average being around .300 is not absolute proof of the opposite. A pitcher at the beginning and at the end of his career would be expected to have a worse BABiP as he fights to hone in his control and to maintain velocity. You bring up the example of Maddux – his BABiP has a bit of a reverse bell curve to it, dipping down from 91 to 98. This would be consistent with that hypothesis.
My argument is that CJ does exert some influence over his BABiP. He has been tough to get a clean hit off of, with his low HR rate as an example. I don’t think we can automatically assume his BABiP will rebound back to .300 next year. This is his sophomore year as a starter but not as a ML pitcher, so going forward I think he will be able to keep it low until he starts to experience the effects of deterioration.
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
well this season the Rangers have 11 pitchers whose
BABiP is .285 or less, and only 6 who are over .300, and Ceej is only 25 pts below the team average for 2010, which would be a more appropriate metric for comparison (negating variations due to team defenses).

CJ says "Relax"
I'm getting tired
of the idea that Wilson’s solved pitching in a way nobody’s solved pitching before.
If he’s got such intellectually inspired pinpoint control that he’ll be able to maintain a .261 BABiP over time, how is it that he can’t convince the umps? Is it just that they’re resentful of how good-looking and successful he is?

Setting that aside, I’ve never met Wilson. I don’t know how intelligent he is. I’ve also never said that Wilson’s strategery is either unimpressive or ineffective.
I’m saying that the idea that he’s going to maintain a historically amazing BABIP-against while also maintaining a 1.57 K/BB (or a 39 K-BB) strikes me as unconvincing, however intelligent Wilson is, and however much time he devotes to his strategery.

He clearly has some influence over his BABiP
if pitchers had no control over the way batter balls bounced they why is CJ’s BABiP L/R split .154/.284 this year and .234/.318 career? I don’t disagree that Wilson has some influence over his BABiP. I never have. But you’re writing things like:
…a regression over the next few years…
, which is a different argument — you’re basically saying Wilson can expect his BABIP to gradually move up from .261, maybe, over 2011-2013. Which I think is unsupported by any evidence.

for evidence look at Greg Maddux and his BABiP reverse bell curve
Stats guys get caught up in their stats and can miss the picture. When all you have is a hammer the whole world looks like a nail. I have worked with statisticians frequently in research – I was at the Whitehead and Mass Eye & Ear for 2 years with Robert Weinberg, and have been a co-author of numerous scientific papers and chapters.
I think the most absurd example of statistical tyranny occurred in my stats class at MIT (the easiest of the math courses offered). I was accused by my professor of cheating because I missed a single question by making a mistake in adding some fractions. He was certain that I and 3 other people unknown to me in class had cheated because the odds of four people making the exact same stupid mistake were statistically impossible. It did not occur to him that the raw class average for stats was in the 90’s compared to the 50’s for all the other math coursework, and that no one needed to cheat .

As for Greg Maddux, I just charted his BABIP (excluding the first year as an outlier), and the “reverse bell curve” you’re talking about it laughable. Not only that, but in citing his example, you’re completing ignoring how different his peripherals are from Wilson’s.
Your whole argument has gone off the rails.

It was right on the edge. Maybe an inch outside.
But on 0-2, fuck him, he needs to call that a strike. Thats a Yankee getting call at Yankee Stadium against a Noob.
"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz
See, that's the thing.
On 0-2, my guess is that has less of a chance of being called a strike anywhere, against anyone, if the pitcher is in the process of throwing 112 pitches, 66 of them for strikes.
And quite honestly, if a Rangers batter struck out looking on that pitch in similar circumstances, this place would be going nuts about robots.
And in any event,
Mitch Williams’ repeated insistence that “that’s a blatant strike” doesn’t seem to hold up.
I can see the argument that it’s a strike, even if (by my eye) I don’t agree; after repeated viewings, it started outside, and wound up outside.
But to call it “blatant”? C’mon.
I disagree with that we'd get all that upset on a pitch that close...
and I still think it’s a strike.
by ghostofErikThompson on Aug 16, 2010 1:07 AM CDT up reply actions
In a GDT?
People are getting upset about pitches that are strikes being called against the Rangers. C’mon.
And while I agree that it’s a very close pitch, it’s not a blatant strike. I’m sorry. It’s not blatant. Teagarden did a very nice job framing it, but nevertheless, I can completely understand why it was called a ball. I think I probably would’ve called it a ball.
And, additionally:
Wilson going on a national broadcast and citing the MLB rule against explicitly complaining about ball/strike calls, and then noting that he “stood straight up” because he couldn’t believe that pitch was called a ball?
Well, that’s probably not great strategery, from the whole getting-the-umps-on-your-side perspective.
I think we're pretty fair about how terrible umpires are...
by ghostofErikThompson on Aug 16, 2010 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions
I think a few people are fair.
I think that’s drowned out by others’ unwarranted kvetching. I’ve commented about this in a few GDT, now.
It’s also worth noting that in the action leading up to that 0-2 call, Wilson had walked two batters in the bottom of the 1st, hit a batter in the bottom of the 3rd, and hit and walked two more batters in the 4th.
That’s not exactly a recipe for convincing an umpire you’ve got great command, and he should give you an added inch or two outside.
What is amazing about this pic...
Look at the trajectory of the ball… and remember that a lefty threw that. Sick…
Yeah...
but it would have been unwise to assume that he could have been this good going into the rotation after being in the ’pen for so long and more than doubling his previous career high in innings pitched too.

One is a matter of projection and development that are probably better left to the scouts to project. One is a matter of peripheral data suggesting CJ is due for some regression.
For example, I have a very poor grasp on what CJ’s expected IP for this year should be. I have a feeling his BABIP will rise because there’s been very, very, very few data points of pitchers who have the skill to keep a BABIP that low and many more that suggest they can’t. However, I don’t expect it to come all the way up to league average because the Rangers have a good defense.

so do Boggs and Strop stick around until Weds? I’d like to see Scheppers called up.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Then who gets DFA'd

Boggs, it depends on Cruz.
If Cruz comes back in a few days, Boggs goes down for Arias.
Otherwise, Cruz to the d.l., Arias activated.

where's the report that his hamstring was tight before the game
It’s hard to know when to sit someone through the grind of a Major League season, and managers can only go off what they know from trainers and players.

I am going by what Rodney posted above
I also believe it was reported that Nellie said his hamstring was tight the whole game. Did Nellie tell the team trainer?

But you’ll be hearing about this a lot.
Dustin Johnson, who had just finished tied for the lead at the PGA Championship with 2 others at -11, touched his club head on top of the sand in a sand hazard (that looked nothing like a bunker) on the 18th hole. He was assessed a two stroke penalty, and won’t be in the playoff now.

Well Ubuntu
surfs the web fine there are a ton of apps and games to download it’s just that any Windows programs are a crap shot whether they’ll work or not. You’ll have to download WINE which functions as a Windows emulator in order to run Windows programs. The problem is it doesn’t work 100% of the time.
It comes preloaded with Firefox and surfs the web quite well, it’s got an email client and also has a program that connects your chat and twitter into one place which is kinda nice. It’s free and worth checking out. Just download it on one of your PC’s and burn to a disk. You can try it out before you install it permanently if you want. You would just take the burned disk and put in your cd drive and boot the computer.

But if the Cowboys win the Super Bowl here in the next 2 years I guess i can eat crow.
Both the increase in worth and on-field success of the Cowboys
have been more than solid under his tenure. While I agree that up until the past few years his reputation as a football decision-maker was deservedly questionable, our recent drafts, acquisitions, and player-development give me a lot of faith in the front office going forward.

The on-field success of the Cowboys...
…has taken a dip since he took over as G.M. from Jimmy Johnson.
And I don’t think it is just a coincidence that the improved personnel moves in recent years coincided with 1) bringing in Bill Parcells to make decisions for a couple of years, and 2) Jerry having to devote himself more to stuff relating to the new stadium and the like.

Yeah, that Jimmy Johnson
The guy who built the Cowboys into a dynasty.
Jimmy Johnson had a hell of a lot more to do with the three Super Bowls that the Cowboys won in the early 90s than Jerry did.
Hell, Jimmy had a better run in Miami than Jerry has had since the core Jimmy built started to disappear.

There's this weird disconnect in my brain.
Even if I lived it, I cannot remember Barry Switzer won a Super Bowl.
I remember Barry Switzer was the Cowboys coach, because he was so embarrassing.
I remember the Cowboys won Super Bowl XXX, because it was awesome.
And I remember Jimmy Johnson left before then, because it was depressing.
Somehow, though, I cannot make my brain fill in who the coach of SB XXX was. I can’t.

I’m not 100 years old, so I don’t remember back when he coached. But I’m guessing he probably didn’t. The only point I’ll make to that is that different players make up different teams. When you coach the mid-late 90’s Cowboys, you must understand that if you give Michael Irvin a blank check to do whatever he wants, he will probably trade that blank check to a colombian guy for a pound of cocaine and a bunch of crazy whores, and he’ll probably convince a lot of other guys to do it, too.

And the team had salary cap issues.
That said, he didn’t do much with the team once he got there. I’m not going to sit here and act like he did a great job in Miami.
But at the same time, he didn’t exactly STBF over there, either.

I'm really annoyed by the Steelers so definitively called Team of the Decade.
It’s one thing if it’s an official title based on most championships won. But if it’s an assessment type thing not built on a sole objective standard, winning two games by 4 points, one of which had a ton of questionable calls, can’t possibly be the difference between questionable and obvious.
Of course
the man most responsible for the Cowboys not having more HoFers is Former Dallas writer Frank Luksa. While other writers viewed it as their job to lobby for and promote their local players, Luksa thought it was beneath him.

I can't think of another NFL team that's had as many high-profile heart breaks as the Cowboys.
There are teams that are more “cursed” owing to having never won at all. But their are so many brutal Cowboys losses just because of getting far so often and usually being good enough to at least play with their competition in those years.
I mean, the three Super Bowl losses were by a total of 11 points! And one of them was just a freaky, flukey game and another was one of the worst officiated Super Bowls ever.
And then there’s the 90s melt down which is a whole different sort of heart break. Thinking about how many championships the Cowboys could realistically have on top of the mere five they’ve got is a depressing exercise.
And their actual championships weren’t usually close, often controversial games like a certain team with more titles. . .
Meh.
Consistently good teams are going to play in high profile games and generally not get blown out. They’re also not going to win all of them. It’s inevitable.
Also, there are quite a few who were close to the situation back then who think that there was so much discord throughout the organization that it wouldn’t have held together anyways.

But heart break is heart break.

I still don’t get why people come around and say that other teams (mainly Steelers fans) come around and say that they’ve had better franchises then we do.
Ever since the Super Bowl came into existence, we’ve been to the most SB’s the most NFC Championship’s, and we’ve won the second most championships. If we had so much as beaten the Steelers once in the 70s or if Craig Morton doesn’t fuck up against the Colts, we’re the team of the 70s and 90s, but that’s life in the Cowboys world. We’re still America’s Team, the most popular, and we have a legitimate chance of playing the SB in our home stadium.

So what is keeping the Cowboys from succeeding?
My point is specifically with JJ. He isn’t putting together a team that can succeed in the playoffs. Sure TO is great, but he was a horrible cancer that was a terrible match for a young QB. I was going after Longhorn saying they had the best team in the NFL. If that was true, they should be winning playoff games left and right.
Especially with the large amount of control Jones has over the team. It has his finger prints on it, as do the lack of playoff games/wins.

I really don't think getting a bunch of shiny pieces together
and thinking they will form a winning team with a coaching staff that doesn’t have a defined leader means your organization is run well.
Jerry Jones is an amazing business man and can silver tongue a lot of things to help the Cowboys chances to win a Super Bowl.
He has no business running the Cowboys as a GM.

Things we know:
2003: Jerry wanted Newman…BP really wanted Dwayne Robertson from that draft. If not him he wanted Sullivan. Witten, i think that was a slam dunk pick in the 3rd.
2004: LOL.
2005: We know BP wanted to take Spears with the top pick, not Ware. Barber was a good BP pick.
2006: LOL.
Bottom line, i wish JJ would have completely taken over those drafts.

You have a problem with the 2007 draft???
I’m pretty down on the 2009 draft, but considering the strength of the current starters and how many of them were injured last year, shouldn’t we give it a year or two more before calling it a bust?

yeah
especially with that overall draft class being pretty bad. We knew most of those guys were going to be projects. Jason Williams looks good. The other Williams and Butler and Buehler and Phillips (best TE on the team not named Witten). Brewster has been hurt, so incomplete there…McGee just sucks though.
"what I have learned in 11 years in the sports business is that the dumbest guys in the room are always the media guys." - mark cuban
Jason Williams needs more experience
Williams and Butler seem like solid OLB depth, at least from what I’ve seen of them.
Don’t overrate Phillips, but yeah, you’d rather have him than not have him. That injury really sucks.
I like Brewster. He seems like my kind of RT. So is Colombo, to be fair, but he’s getting old.

Brown? Enjoy NY sucka.
Ball? A possible diamond. I am ok with him.

Sooo, let me get this right
An OLB capable of being a pro-bowler, your left tackle of the future, a replacement level safety and fullback, and a kicker who was decent for a couple of years then fell off of a cliff.
That’s a lot of value for a draft. Both in terms of ceiling and league average production.

Ok.
One good to great starter, 2-3 average players and a decent but short-lived player?
5 players who are more than bench/ST fodder in one draft? Maybe it wasn’t the best draft that year, but that is a better than average draft. If you could do that every year, you would win 9 games ever year.

To be fair, he's not a terrible GM.
Could he be better? Sure, but it could be a hell of a lot worse. He’s got some stinkers to his credit, but he’s also done quite a bit of good. Plus, it seems like Steven is in his ear a lot more these days and is at least somewhat keeping him in check.

I think his main weakness is wanting to go for stars. It’s not the worst trait, especially now that he’s been convinced to pursue them in the draft instead of FA.
The concern, of course, is that they have a pathological need to ignore/undervalue linemen and safeties in the draft, but surely they address it next year….right? RIGHT? Sigh…

This could be a perfect game tonight. Lee doesn’t walk anyone and Rays have a distressing tendency to get no-hit.

well
I think one of the more dangerous hitters against us is Carlos Pena and he’s on the DL. The Rays have a good team, but I feel more confident with Holland than I do with the combo of Feldman and Harden. I like what Harrison is doing out of the ‘pen so I won’t mess with that

this
Ryan Zimmerman would be a star in a bigger market. Flip teams with David Wright and Zimmerman, and Zimmerman would be the talk of NY while Wright would be the forgotten man in Wash
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
To be fair
Wright was ridiculous in ’07 an ’08. Over those two years, he was probably the best player in baseball not named Pujols.
I'm not discounting how good Wright is
I’m merely stating that Zimmerman would have a much bigger reputation if he was in NY, and likewise Wright would not be quite as large without the NY media. Granted, in those years Wright was among the best with Pujols, Hanley, Reyes, Holliday, and Arod.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Understood
And I agree that Zimmerman is very underappreciated. I was just trying to say that, for as good as Zimm is, he’s never had a run like Wright had those two years, so I can see why there’s a gap between the two in public perception. And more importantly, Zimmerman’s never had an offensive season (before this one) that matched up with what Wright did from ‘05-’08, and lord knows that’s what most fans zero in on. Hopefully he’ll get some recognition for what he’s done this year.

I decided last night that right around where Profar is really hitting his stride at third. . .
. . . the Rangers shore up their catcher situation for a year and a half by trading for Bryce Harper.
With the Perez-Feliz-Holland-Scheppers-Font rotation going strong, the result is two of the best teams ever constructed.
Aren't they converting him to the OF though?

It's funny, at one point, it was a nice little hot streak that had put Hamilton in contention for deserving a spot on the All-Star bench.
Then it became a really long hot streak. Then it simply became he is the best in baseball this year.
If he doesn't get the MVP,
it will just be a sad day for baseball.

what an obscure reference
wins above replacement. Just a value measurement based on performance. Technically measures how many wins that person has added to the team as opposed to his spot being replaced by someone who is a AAAA guy (basically). Takes into account batting and fielding (fangraphs uses UZR), how many games you’ve played, the difficulty of your position. Actually, that is how fangraphs calculates it. Not sure what Baseball reference uses to calculate WAR.
I don’t think I covered everything though
You should read this though
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/win-values-explained-part-one
Baseball-Reference uses the less accurate Total Zone for their fielding component
That usually ends up giving you a different value from what Fangraphs gives you.

Also, they're very different for pitchers.
It takes a pitchers adjusted ERA, and then removes or adds the average TZ per game the team adds defensively. FanGraphs just uses park-adjusted FIP.
B-R’s also includes some base running components FanGraphs doesn’t.
I don't know why
but I never look at WAR for pitchers. I guess I just prefer looking at the pitcher’s overall stats even though for hitters I prefer to look at one overall stat.

Question
Does FanGraphs incorporate wOBA for hitters in WAR? Because I was under the impression that wOBA implemented some baserunning components, too.
Well, yes and now.
They include wRAA, and wOBA is based on that. And it does include stealing, but Rally goes further and tries to include things like going first to third.
Actually
am I right about the replacement part? I always forget if it is replacement over league average or replacement over minor leaguer
it is replacement over minor leaguer
or Willie Bloomquist, as Cameron explains.
Was confused because wRAA is actually runs above average but that gets adjusted with the replacement calculation.
Yup.

"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"
Sabermetrics Library – most of those articles are from fangraphs and lookout landing.
"No nuts, no glory"
FIP is actually pretty simple once you know what it is
FIP is just supposed to measure a pitcher’s performance by only looking at things within his control. That means strikeouts, walks, and home runs. Can’t remember the exact formula ever, you can probably google it pretty easily, but the equation is set to make it look similar to ERA.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."

I calculate my FIP's on MLB the show all the time
(HR) x 13 + (BB) x 3 – (K) x 2 = (y)
Divide (y) total of that by the total of innings pitched, and add 3.20 to that sum.

I'll give you the short explanation and a link to FanGraphs' longer explanations.
Simply it’s an estimator of how many wins above a scrub just barely good enough to belong at the MLB level a player produces at his position. He’s a little worse, but Arias is a decent example of a replacement-level second baseman; think of someone a little bit better than Arias.
So Ian Kinsler this season has been about 2.2 wins above replacement this year. So, put simply, the Rangers would be about two wins worse in the standings if someone a little better than Joaquin Arias had played those games. Also, two wins might be more than it sounds like, that’s roughly an average baseball player over a full season (roughly David Murphy).
It’s based on how many runs his results at the plate could be expected to produce in average situations, how much better than the average fielder he is in terms of runs (the FanGraphs version is UZR), then compared to the replacement-level at the position. The runs above replacement are then converted to wins based on how many runs it takes per win for teams that season, but the number is usually right around 10. So, roughly, 10 runs = 1 win.
I started writing this before other people posted their answers.
so it basically shows how valuable a particular player is (from an "impact the game" standpoint)
"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"
Yup, exactly.
It is a good way of quickly, and in one number, assessing a player’s value contribution. I consider it the best starting point for comparing players, and you can dive deeper from there to futher separate them or find disagreeable points in the numbers.
That's so fucking solid.
