Tuesday a.m. Rangers stuff
Yeah, I don't have anything to say about last night.
Jeff Wilson's game story says the defense let Cliff Lee down last night, and Ron Washington, in particular, is quoted as saying that Joaquin Arias should have gotten a pair of outs in the 8th that he didn't get.
The Rangers' website game story calls last night's game "weird."
Evan Grant's post game story lays the blame on Arias for the loss, and includes a quote from Ron Washington saying that "We have got to get our heads out of our butts and play better baseball tomorrow," one of the all time great Ron Washington quotes, I think.
Grant also says that Vlad Guerrero's basepath adventures have to stop before the playoffs.
The Rangers website notes has some injury updates, including an update on Ian Kinsler, and says that Derek Holland likely will start tomorrow, but it isn't definitive yet.
Wilson's notes mention that Nelson Cruz didn't want to go on the disabled list.
The Rangers signed supplemental first rounder Luke Jackson and fifth rounder Justin Grimm yesterday.
And Chuck Greenberg has been spending time in the stands, talking to fans.

Well
do we have better options? German’s D isn’t that great at either 2B or 3B I read somewhere, Petit’s bat isn’t that great, and Iribarren has never played 3B I don’t think and isn’t hitting that well. Seems like Arias is our best option and one game shouldn’t determine how you view a player is.

Agreed.
Arias is probably the most hated player currently on the 40 roster, hell probably the whole organization.

He's got great stuff but he scares me
I have doubts that he’ll ever develop the control he needs and will always be too wild.
Same here.
And his release scares the holy shit out of me. Such a violent, jerky series of actions. Every pitch I expect for his elbow to explode and for there to be tendons strewn about the infield. I’m shocked it hasn’t happened yet.

Arias is well below average defensively as well though.
I’d say he’s pretty much a wash with German as far as defensive effectiveness goes, and German can play multiple positions and at least provides some value in the ability to get on base at a decent clip.
I’m much rather have him up here than Arias.

Get rid of the idiot. We can no longer risk his mental lapses in the field. He’s out of options but if anyone is stupid enough to claim him they are welcome to it. German cannot be any worse and whoever it ends up being is just keeping the spot warm until Ian gets back. We have got to remember how many times in the past baseball has seen “insurmountable” leads dissappear late in the season and it always seems to start this way. The team starts to struggle and the other team manages to start stringing some wins together. Next thing you know you are playing a head to head series with them and the outcome could determine the division. Does anyone really want that?

My 2 cents on Arias...
Looked like he was trying to do his best Ian Kinsler impersonation (too bad he isn’t Kinsler otherwise he’d get atleast an out), what with the way he tried to get the out at 2nd.
And he did his best Mike Young, Gold Glove SS, impersonation on the blooper.
Talk about pissing away any good-will earned with that leadoff triple.
Am I the only one that thinks Boggs should have been calling him off and caught the bloop?

That doesn't surprise me
Seriously, though. Arias would have needed to make a basketcatch facing away from home on a dead sprint.
Boggs merely needed to charge and worst-case scenario, make a shoestring catch.
AKA BuckyB
Don't care what the Dr. of D said, that ball could be made easier by Boggs
but the blame is on the roach for impeding Boggs, he should have just run over the roach to catch it.
it was Arias' by default
If you call for it you damn well better catch it… Boggs’ mistake though because he needs to take the point and call Arias off… its obvious he had the easier play but he chose to defer… not a good choice
not too surprising
after all, Boggs’ first day on the team this year. Arias has been in the majors all year, he’s calling for it, you expect him to make it. takes some balls to call him off. not sure Boggs has those. Gentry would have called him off though.
Jubel Early: You know, with the exception of one deadly and unpredictable midget, this girl is the smallest cargo I've ever had to transport, yet by far the most troublesome. Does that seem right to you?
It was Boggs'
He is the outfielder coming in, better positioning, have a pair and call off Arias… this is a mans game gotta use your big boy voice and make the play
Right,
Boggs wasn’t calling him off at all.
I guess this is what happens when you have a minor league defense out there.
AKA BuckyB
and then
When Boggs finally deferred to Arias, Boggs completely misplayed the ball and let it get by him, allowing the runner to take second. That was the biggest kick in the teeth of all!
"Drinks are on me if Lewis posts >168IP and an era lower than 3.86." by RangerMad on Jan 20, 2010 12:36 PM PST
I thought is was Boggs ball also
but then I think Murphy should have been in RF anyhow to start the 8th.
I think Murph makes that catch
Wasnt like it was going to be a spectacular catch. Boggs pulled up and stopped and he was having trouble spotting the ball last night so he probably had a bad jump on it anyway. It was a perfect storm of baseball stupidity
then that play wasn't Arias or Boggs fault
The blame should go to Ron Washington for not putting his best OF of Josh, Borbon and Murphy in the field for the top of the 8th.
In all fairness
If you’re right fielder or second baseman can’t make that catch, they probably shouldn’t be in the professional baseball.

Murphy makes that. He's McGrit.
I could see Murphy taking over the clubhouse/lineup tonight if Young is out. I really do see him as a leader. He’s not the greatest player in the world, but he could certainly show Boggs and the boys how to max out there on the field.

And another thing:
I’ve now heard Craig Miller on the Ticket and Newberg both do their part in continuing “The Rangers are wasting Cliff Lee’s starts” meme which has been running strong for a while. I don’t understand this. For one, last night’s loss was in large part due to the fact that half our starters weren’t playing. Second, I don’t believe the team plays with a different attitude or mindset when Lee pitches. The “Oh, Cliff Lee’s starting tonight, The Rangers somehow play differently” idea is lunacy in my mind. The Rangers are not so much ‘blowing Cliff Lee’s starts’ as they are just losing baseball games in the course of a season.
Isn’t it likely that it’s just a small sample of bad luck, combined with Cliff being matched up with the other team’s best starting pitcher, with a dash of some of our best players being on the DL? If the Rangers had gone 3-4 in CJ Wilson’s last 7 starts, would bloggers and radio personalities be up in arms, talking about “CJ’s going to get mad at us and not resign here next year!” And more to the point, all this hand-wringing about “Cliff Lee won’t want to sign here because we aren’t giving him any run support or defense behind him” is misguided. I would think Cliff Lee can watch the team on the field every day and see that there’s a solid core of younger hitters and defenders on this team play baseball really well. Besides, he’s going to go where the money is first and foremost, anyway.
Now, I know it has to irk him. I know he wants the W on his record. But to say that a few bad games from a good team is going to sway his decision this winter is just wrong in my opinion.

That 1000 mile stare that Lee had while sitting on the bench in the 9th and after the game
didn’t look good but he has 8 more regular season starts plus the playoffs.
We do need to start playing better (20-20 since July 1) but we also need to get healthy.

Not to mention in 8 starts, two have been against Weaver and one against Price. How much run support can you expect in those games?
It's all silliness
Newberg has suggested Cliff will get caught up in some of this “magic” the Rangers have this year and wanty to come back.
First off, Cliff Lee pitched in the World Series last year. And he kicked ass. That win over Boston friday night was a hell of a win and an awesome game, but it was August 13th. “Magic” is made in October (and now November).
Secondly, Cliff will sign with whomever offers him the longest contract that is worth the highest annual value.
Period.
Take your 100 degree weather or team chemistry or close to Arkansas or bad defense or no run support theories and flush them. That shit doesn’t matter.

It really seems like they're prepared to go all out.. won't break the bank so to speak
But it will hurt their pocketbooks and for someone of his caliber, it should. I’ve heard all the reasons etc etc why he could be gone but he also fits so well already with this team, I’ve gotten used to him much to my detriment lol. I love their chemistry. And sigh can’t see him in another team’s uniform, even worse the MFY. Everyone has made great points, first if he wants to stay here, he will have to turn down a sure to be better offer from the Yankees. But I think if The Rangers are within the ballpark moneywise, it should be okay? I think they will have to offer him 6 yrs or at least an option.
Of course winning can go a long way too and us going deep in the playoffs and hopefully further then that… But Cliff is a professional and knows some of our spares are out there and it isnt our team at its full strength. But still no excuse for that awful loss last night and that was the first time, it seemed like he really looked upset.

There aren’t going to be any other FA ace-types on the market this offseason.
What about taking a chance on Brandon Webb? Coming off a lost season he might come cheap and take a 1-year. I don’t think we should be gunshy about reclamation projects even after the disaster that was Harden. Webb’s an extreme ground-ball pitcher and might be a nice fit in the #2 or #3.

Last thing we want is another CHP type deal that ties us down for several years

Cliff's 2010 season will be a test for how far Cy Young voters have advanced
They got the voting right in 2009, with Greinke and Lincecum. Those guys won 16 and 15 games, respectively. We know win/loss record doesn’t properly judge a SP’s performance. But if Cliff winds up with 14 wins and Price or Sabathia wind up with 19 or 20, I can’t see Cliff winning the voting.

Then I come into the office and hear it all day from co-workers who are Yankee…Boston…fans born and raised here. “some day…you’re team may win one…oh wait..you’re the texas rangers..never mind.” “SUCKS to be a fan of losers.”
Crap…if you’re going to rail on my team…at least make it interesting or original!
I need more coffee
Tell them to fuck off
Or better yet give them my number and I will tell them to fuck off.

Nope.
I root for the team with a lot less money and without a major city surrounding it to help draw recruits.
I can’t imagine why any kid with a choice of schools to play at would pick Pullman. They fly you in to Spokane, which is no nifty city itself, then drive you for more than an hour through a landscape that has a few more hills and a few less trees than Kansas before taking you on a stretch of tiny back roads so you can roll in to a town of like 400 people when school is out. from their front page
The 2009-10 academic calendar year marks the sixth season of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown, and for the fourth time in the first six years of this event, the Longhorns have captured the Showdown title outright
number 2:
The Horns claimed the inaugural Showdown in 2004-05 with a 14.5-4.5 victory. Texas then posted a 14.0-5.0 win in 2005-06, before recording a 10.5-8.5 victory in the 2006-07 Showdown. Texas A&M claimed its only outright win with a 10.5-8.5 victory in 2007-08. The two schools posted a 9.5-9.5 tie last season, but the Aggies retained the trophy as defending champions.
so aTm has actually won 1x in the last six year.

Um. . . their school wins stuff.
Winning stuff is more fun than not winning stuff.
And there are things more important than going to a school because it wins. Like going where you can afford that fits your major and keeps you in the part of the country you want to be.
I really don’t get what’s confusing here.
Affordability vs. a good major.
You can find that in any major at A&M or UT – two of the biggest bargains in the country, and you can find a good college for just about everything at either one.
If you chose to go somewhere else, live with that choice and get your head off UT’s dick.
by FuturePants on Aug 17, 2010 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions
My head is not on UT's dick.
You’re being really, really weird here.
And why would I move across the country away from the state I love to pay more money? Doesn’t make sense, athletics are nice but they’re not that important.
But me being envious of students who actually got to see their teams win has nothing to do with being on their dick. It has to do with being envious that their schools win. Simple as that. I don’t get what the hell you don’t understand about that.
If athletics are so important...
…you should have picked a different school. If they aren’t important, why are you jealous?

You really don't know jack shit about Tech, RangerSD. Potts...
Wasn’t very good early last year v NDakota and Rice and then he STBF v Houston.
Then he absolutely shit the walls v motherfucking New Mexico (one of the worst teams in NCAA last year) before mercifully getting pulled because he was knocked out.
Motherfucking New Mexico…in Lubbock?!?!? Sheffield came off the bench and put up 41 points in one half.
Got booed off the field v A&M (we were 21 point favorites and got worked by them).
He completely fucked up the Okie State game (Sheff had to limp off the sidelines to try and help) and he personally kept a shitty Baylor team in the game.
Tech runs off to a lead v Michigan State and then what happens? Potts starts to STBF once again and gets his ass pulled for Sheffield (who once again leads us to victory).
If Potts is the QB all season, I have difficulty believing we will win more than 7 games.

Leach was in a situation where he was not set up to succeed.
His fanbase loved him. His offense loved him.
His bosses hated him and his defense despised playing second fiddle to his game plans. He has a great football mind, but he doesn’t understand or take into account the defense side’s emotions. That was probably his biggest downfall with the players.
The BoR at Tech wished death upon him and hated his success, because that meant he wasn’t going anywhere. He didn’t play by the good ol’ boy system and the good ol’ boys got their way.
But Leach could be a dick. I can agree with that. But so are 90% of college coaches.

He's a coach with a very successful
track record in THE toughest conference and is taking over a team with all kinds of experience (mostly successful) coming back.
His immediate competition within the Big 12 have all taken huge hits and are in the process of reloading.

Changing coaches = the definition of a "huge hit."
And he was just about successful enough at Auburn to get run out of town.

Please tell me you're not citing Auburn's
athletic department’s actions as evidence of Tuberville’s merits? That’s possibly the biggest joke of an AD in the country.
Look at the stuff they pulled with Petrino, for instance.
Fair enough
But if he is predestined for greatness at every stop, if he is truly a “no-doubt” coaching hire, why didn’t he get a better job than Tech?

Josey is, of course,
overrating him a bit, but he’s a quite solid hire. I wonder about this year due to the system transition—-although sometimes that really doesn’t have much impact (or at least once it didn’t, heh, and GT in 08 is really all I remember w.r.t. that)—-but long term I think he’s got a similar, if not higher, ceiling to Leach.
If he sticks around.
Coaching changes have a huge impact.
Very rarely does a new coach match the previous coaches wins, let alone surpass it.
"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz
When it comes to coaches getting fired,
you’re also usually dealing with teams that are about to bottom out and then go on to lose even more talent in the wake of the coaching change. And schools usually end up with a non-ideal hire after striking out on their first choices.
Texas Tech is in a better position since they had a fair bit of talent and landed a legitimate quality coach. 8 wins is probably a lot to expect in year one, but it’s also not a program I expect to fall off.
And I need to rephrase what I said earlier.
When a good/great coach is being replaced, as in one that already had his team winning >7 games the season he was let go, then rarely to never does the in coming coach match or meet that win total.
"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz
Well that's the thing,
I can’t think of too many situations where teams fired/ran off their coaches after good years.
I’ve only come up with two off the top of my head (comparing just regular-season wins):
Franchione won 7 his last year, but Sherman’s no Tuberville. He also had a few losing seasons as well.
Gailey won 7 his last year, had a better overall record than Franchione, though it wasn’t as good as Leach, and Johnson won 9 his first year despite basically as big a change as you can have system-wise.
I would throw in Tuberville/Auburn as well, though. Only 5 wins his last year, but they had been consistently very good under him — better than Texas Tech, even — for a few years before that. And (somehow!) Chizik got them up to 8 wins.
Oh, yeah, Clemson works, depending on when you make the switch.
7 total wins (3-3 under Bowden, 4-2 under Swinney) in ’07, and 8 in ’08.
Bowden had won 9 in ’06, though.
Florida has a different level of good.
But they ran off Zook, and Meyer won his first title with his players, basically.
'Waiting for a girl and she gets me into fights
Waiting for a girl we get drunk on Friday night'
There are quite a few.
Here’s a link you should take a look at if you’re that interested. It’s a long read, but it’s where I garnered most of my info on the coaching change.
"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz
The first thing that pops out based on that link,
is that Tuberville fits the same criteria they used to narrow down the comparisons for Leach.
But with an even higher winning percentage, in a tougher conference, than Leach had.
So yeah, reading it some more, it usually doesn't work,
but what I was going for was that most of the time the replacement isn’t a guy as proven as Tuberville.
Also: I had forgotten how weird Bowden’s collapse at Auburn was. So out of nowhere.
I agree, but the situation far out weighs the person coming in.
In my opinion.
But what really is going to be the tail of the tape is that the same type offense is going to stay in place, but a new offensive coordinator.
I’ll put it this way, it’s kind of like replacing the Ditka and Buddy Ryan of the ’85 Bears with Mike Martz as HC and Norm Chow as OC.
"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz
At Tech, Tuberville doesn't need
to win more than 8-9 games a year…that may be what he wants with the possibility (but not expectation) to do better.
And yes, I was referencing the SEC when I said best conference. Tuberville did quite well there under trying circumstances.

I thought it was somewhat funny that Tuberville
would be willing to once again take a job where the AD is a good-ol-boys joke who will sell their coach out without breaking a sweat after his Auburn experience.
Guess he really wanted to get back into coaching.
Tubberville wanted Sherman to get canned so he could take the A&M job.
He wanted it so badly he could taste it.

So should everyone in Dallas
who didn’t go to a college with a D1 program be an SMU fan? And TCU for all of the folks in Fort Worth?
No.
But what’s worse: a Yankees fan from New York shitting on the Rangers, or a Yankees fan from Colorado shitting on the Rangers?
A Lakers fan from Texas. :P
(But to extend that metaphor it would need to be a pre-Rockies Yankee fan from Colorado… and meh, I just don’t care that much.)
See, and I know you're ribbing me, but. . .
Yeah, I think I have a lot less attachment to the Lakers than I do any other team I root for. For one ,that means I have a lot less passion for them. For another, if I were a trash talker, then talking trash like the Lakers represent me, even though I’ve never been to their city, would be an extra level of stupid beyond someone from LA doing it.
And I think this goes more so for college, where the attachments are built on more than just residency.
But, again, I think all trash talking, outside of rubbing a previously-douchey douche’s nose in things after the fact, is stupid. I’m just talking about trash talk that’s more stupid.
I have major (but explainable) instability
on this one…grew up in So Cal during the late 60’s / early 70s.
I still root for the Lakers and the recent Boston series brought back all that 1980s I-still- fucking-hate-Danny-Ainge-angst.
Now, my favorite team are the Mavs and I’ve always rooted for them to beat the Lakers in the post-season but it never happened.

The Longhorns are the equivalent to the NY Yankees in this area and they’ve picked up an incredible number of bandgwagon fans in the last decade that weren’t there for Macovic / McWilliams.
Everybody knows what’s going on…they have the money and the power so they get the players and never worry about getting busted. Jeeez, I’ve lived in Texas for 35 years and they’ve never been on probation. All those players in the atmosphere that has existed and not once have they been put on probation (where they’ve been bowl-ineligible).
Where I might have cheered for them in the past….I now want them to lose in everything because of the condescending attitude they collectively have towards everybody else in the state.
The problem is the way their fans carry themselves and the condescending attitude they have towards everybody else.
When that bullshit condescending attitude comes from somebody who didn’t even go to Texas, yes, I’m going to say STFU.

I don't think it's wrong to adopt a D1 school
if you didn’t go to one. I live in Fort Worth, so I cheer for TCU. My school, ACU, is a D2 school. They don’t play in the same league, so there’s no conflict of interest. If ACU decided to nut up and build their own stadium and go 1AA (or whatever they call it now), I obviously would drop TCU in a heartbeat.

They went to other schools but are dyed-in-the-wool Sooner homers because either people in their family went to school there or they lived there for a few years.
Few things make me want to call The Ticket more than when I hear The College Football Blowhard blowing hard on all things OU and usually kicking Texas Tech in the nuts but he hasn’t got me to call in yet.

They’re excuses…
I played for the Yankees in little league. or…my dad watched them…or I went to New York once and liked them then. Or…they haven’t always won since I’ve liked them. They went 10 years between WS titles and went to the playoffs all but 1 year.
Try being a real fan….who believes every year is the year you’re finally going to do it…then watch your team get hammered year in and year out. Never win a playoff series…but yet you still live and breath their every move. Know your history…read about the future players…go to games in 110 degree heat. Your wife thinks you’re crazy ’cause the only thing you ever ask for is more Ranger tickets.
THEN…and ONLY THEN…will you actually be a fan. .
Until then….you don’t exist

losing every game to TB and sweeping NY in the three-game series in September
would go a little ways to NY losing the division, “help” Texas and piss off the Yankees in the process. there’s always an upside.
the best solution to boomer1 wanting to see NY in the first round would be having them here as the wild card. of course, we need to getback in front of MIN now.

Anyone else tired of hearing about how awesome Vlad looks in BP?
As I scrolled thru one of the GDT from last night, someone posted a tweet from Lewin about it. Heard it mentioned over the weekend, as well.
Not to revive an old bit, but Vlad has 4 hits in his last 3 games- 3 infield singles and one Texas leaguer to RF (friday night against BOS). His last extra base hit was Aug 4th. 1 HR since July 10th.
"Don't confuse the outcome that a decision produces with the intelligence that went into making that decision."--Tony LaRussa
He's swinging out of his cleats right now, pulling his head out and taking his eye off the ball, and trying to pound everything 500 feet.
He looks like Hank Blalock at the plate right now.

His swing looked different earlier in the year though.
Yeah, he swings at everything, but earlier in the year he was making contact and taking what the pitcher gave him. Seems like he’s trying to drive everything out to left field right now and it’s really screwing up his approach.

And how much of that is on Vlad, how much is on Wash/JD for playing him every. single. effing. day?
You would definitely think
sitting a guy to give him days off in the middle of a slump wouldn’t be all that tough to do. I’ve never been a fan of the whole “he needs to play his way out of it by playing every day” line of thinking. I’ve seen plenty of guys benched in middle of slumps then hit all right after time on the bench.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
They've been giving Vlad a lot of rest lately...
we just went thru a 3 off days over a 12 day period and he didn’t play every one of those games…plus he’s the freaking DH.
He’s just going thru a slump and he’s getting older.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"The Influence continues." Josey Wales (1/18/10)
Plus with the other injuries we have
We almost have to play him because of the possibility he breaks out of his slump we need offense.
Whoever gets to play in place of Vlad if we did sit him probably isn’t going to do much better than Vlad would do and Vlad has the chance to get going and do a hell of a lot better than whoever replaces him.
yeah
he just needs to hit his way out of it now, unless there’s an injury. Not that anyone could tell with the way he normally moves anyway…

He’s got as strong a case for Executive of the Year as anyone.
But letting Arias linger for this long is pretty inexcusable. We can praise the Lee deal, the Colby signing, the Vlad signing and everything else all we want, but it’s a legitimate front office failure to let Joaquin Arias remain on the roster for this long.

It's gotten borderline ridiculous at how much leash the guy has gotten.
He is utterly and completely useless and to have him stick around this long, especially in a pennant race, is just dumb.
If last night’s debacle wasn’t enough to get him off this team, then I really don’t know what else could. It’s as if JD is trying to desperately hang on to the last remnants of the ARod trade.

If the team insisits on having multiple utility infielders on the active roster
then they need to cut bait with Arias and go ahead and sign Alex Cora. He may be old and can’t hit anymore, but at least he’ll give you some steady defense.

Why would JD care about holding onto the last remnants of the Arod trade?
He didn’t make that trade. The owner who was at the time isn’t the owner anymore. Thats a stupid argument to make
I'm not trying to make that argument.
Nor do I actually think thats the case. I’m just saying that its to the point that you’re running out of logical reasons as to why the FO continues to keep Arias around.

Look, I hate Arias as much as the next guy, but
They kept him around just in case Kinsler couldn’t go all year (he couldn’t).
They went out and picked up what looked like a serviceable sub (Guzman) who apparently isn’t serviceable.
They are pretty well clutching at straws right now, but I think Spider may have finally played himself right out of the picture.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
That's probably true.
But they stuck him at first base and tried to get him playing time when they could. They decided it was more important to have two UIF on the active roster rather than a RH OF bat. That means the team viewed him as having some type of value.
How they came to that conclusion is what is concerning.

Beats the heck out of me
I just find it annoying that they helpd on to him all year “just in case Kinsler can’t go”, and when that finally proves true, Arias he was neveer the answer.
Let’s just hope Wash’s comments were a sign that he’s off the Arias bandwagon.

I think with 40+ games left it’s too early to call the season. I think a couple of years ago HOU came back one year from 40 billion games behind to win the division. 8 game lead doesn’t seem that large in that context. Cautionary tale.

That has nothing to do with a RH bat though
In the playoffs Josh isn’t sitting against anyone. Cantu will play 1B against LHP. The only other LHB is Borbon who bats 9th and plays steller defense in CF. Thats a tradeoff I will take. If we are one ’n done then its because we got beat by a better team not because we needed a RH bat like Brandon meh Boggs
You can't have Judy Borbon in the line-up if he's going to throw down a
.570 (or more likely below) OPS. His defense (he dropped a can of corn on Saturday and also throws the ball like a chick with a torn rotator cuff) doesn’t make up for his shitastic offense.
We’re talking about a player who was throwing down a .432 OPS post AS Break before his Sunday outburst (a nice bunt single that would have made Vic Davalillo proud and another hit that pinballed off a statue covered in pidgeon shit named Mike Lowell).
You can’t live with players like that in your line-up.

pretty sad I've been waiting with baited breat for Treanor to come back
"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"
No need to thank me, I don't build the roster.
But he wasn’t playing anymore until Nellie got hurt. And, while he is a defensive upgrade, the primary reason to play him is to keep Josh out of center for fatigue and health reasons. In the playoffs, that isn’t an issue.
Our best outfield
when everyone is healthy is probably Murphy-Hamilton-Cruz.
Murphy’s bat and glove combined trumps Borbon’s bat and glove combined.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
If you trust UZR,
then Josh is better enough defensively in left than in center that it seems to make up for a lot of Murphy’s 3 RAR advantage over Borbon.
But that’s over replacement, and I’m probably doing something wrong when it comes to comparing across positions like that…
Murphy is
10 UZR/150 in LF this year. It’s not like he is terrible out there. For his career he is 6.5 UZR/150
Hamilton is 7.2 UZR/150 this year and 5.9 for his career.
If anything, Murphy is better than Hamilton in left if you believe UZR.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
I was looking at UZR150 but raw offensive runs to date,
which made the difference (Borbon’s UZR in center is considerably higher than Josh’s) look like a wash.
Projecting the offensive differences between Borbon and Murphy out to a full season’s length made the Murphy/Hamilton combo look like a much better option.
(As long as you don’t have any health concerns with him in CF.)
Yeah, Hamilton's
health is the only fly in the ointment.

So you think our lack of a really good Util IF and RH bench bat is going to undo us in the playoffs?
AKA BuckyB
Judy Borbon shouldn't be in The Show the rest of the season
in the Year of It’s Time, period. He’s fucking terrible.
We need an OF who can also play some CF and take some of that burden off of Josh.
NCruz keeps pulling his hamstrings and I’m worried about him after he comes back.
David Murphy has an OPS of .683 v LH pitching.
We’re gonna see lots of DPrice, CC, Liriano, Danks, Buerhle in the post-season.
We need somebody who can split the OF duty with Murphy and also play some CF and if we don’t identify that player, yeah, I think it’s going to hurt us in the playoffs.

Borbon is better in CF than Hamilton
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Are you saying Judy's range
trumps Hamilton’s arm?
Josh showed a lot of range last Friday night…I worry more about him hurting himself than how he plays the position.

Borbon range trumps Hamilton arm at least according to UZR, which are the only facts I have.
Borbon’s defense is better than double any other CF in the AL, I don’t give a fuck about his hitting. I would rather win it 4-2 than lose 6-4. It is about the damn defense, he makes the entire outfield better.

What helps is having the best players possible going in every game.
If you’re concerned about Josh’s well being in CF every day, playing Judy and using Murphy as a 4OF makes sense, and you get a nice defensive boost by doing it.
But the best lineup is Murph-Hambone-Nellie. And when you only play 2-3 games at a time in a must-win format, that’s what you do.
The ability to prevent runs, plain and simple.
Nate Silver’s work looking at 26 factors and the correlation to playoff success. Highlights here:
Runs scored : .00
ISO power: .01
Runs allowed .22
Closer WXRL: .23
Opp. Bat Avg: .23
Nate’s summary “Does this mean that defense really win championships? The short answer is, yes.”
by diamond_dave on Aug 17, 2010 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, defense gets more leverage in the playoffs.
That doesn’t mean you don’t play your best players. The offensive gain by benching Borbon is much larger than the defensive gain by benching Murphy, even in the increased leverage of a lower run environment.
This is simple stuff.
I think the defensive gain is very close to making up for the offense lost. You act like it is a slam dunk and I think it is very close.
Murphy is a streaky hitter, he is hot right now, but he is still a .260-.270 lifetime hitter.
by diamond_dave on Aug 17, 2010 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions
Somehow
folks act like Murphy is some leper in the field.
At LF he is 10 UZR/150 and 5.9 UZR/150 for his career in LF.
He’s not complete batshit out there.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
Of course offense matters but all offense all the time mentality is what the Rangers have been for long time.
by diamond_dave on Aug 17, 2010 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions
But it's not an all-offense all-the-time mentality.
It’s putting the best players on the field. Murpy in left and Hamilton in center is a defensive hit, but it’s even more of an offensive gain.
All offense all the time would be actually being worse just to get more offense. What you’re advocating is the opposite of that. The correct path is in the middle.
I think our best defensive lineup is Ham-Borbon-Cruz
But the dropoff to Murphy-Ham-Cruz isn’t drastic and the improvement offensively from Borbon to Murphy is pretty drastic, at least this year
If the Rangers had an all offense
all the time mentality, Andrus would be benched.
It’s the combination of offense and defense that matters from position players. Sadly for Borbon he is a zero offensively.

Colorado & Philadelphia both came back recently.
The ’Stros scared the shit out of the Cards in 2006 (9 game lead knocked down to 2 win the last two weeks).
We almost shit the bed fantastic in ‘96 and the ’95 M’s were something like 12.5 back on August 20 to force a playoff…things like that can happen but they’re not going to in the Year of It’s Time.

Go back through history
and just look at some of the amazing late season collapses (is that a word?) that have happened through the years. I have been a Ranger fan for 30 years so forgive me if I am doom and gloom. But we cannot afford to let up or simply say “he will do for now” because thats how it starts.
What are we at the park for except to win? I'd trip my mother. I'd help her up, brush her off, tell her I'm sorry. But mother don't make it to third. ~Leo Durocher
I'm pretty sure, by this late in the season, Houston was closer in the wild card than the Angels are in the division, though.
I know they were about 12 games back of the division and ended up 11 games back.
It’s entirely possible to blow an 8 game lead this late in the year, but it does seem huge in the context of how often leads that huge this late are blown, which is almost never.
Hell, even the fabled collapse of the Mets a couple years ago, they were never up by 8 games.
They were up by 7 in mid September, though. The ’95 Angels had 29 games left when they last had an 8 game lead, the Rangers have 37 left.
That’s what we’re looking at here. BP has these as the two most unlikely melt downs in the history of division play. They are (unneeded) proof it can happen. But the reason the lead is so huge and the division is like 99% over is exactly why those two meltdowns are such a big deal: they just about never, ever happen. That doesn’t make the lead look any less small to me, it makes it look even huger.
Also, I don’t think the teams trailing are very good. The Phillies and Mariners were actually good, they just didn’t play like it all year.
That's the biggie...the teams trailing aren't very good.
I’m still more worried about Oakland than LAAA.

I’ve said yes and no at different times. He deserved a lot more than 10% and out, though. I absolutely would have voted for him just to keep him on the ballot.
Agreed that LA and OAK
are having thier own issues this year and that the Phillies and Seattle were good teams those years. All I am saying is that we cannot take the attitude of “it’s just one loss” or “there is no way anyone catches us”. Again I am likely being paranoid but we are Ranger fans after all. I want the management to make moves sooner than later and if it means Arias needs to go now then be done with it.

As a man who thinks faith is just fine and dandy, that’s cool. I don’t believe him that they exist, but I can’t prove him wrong, either, so he should be allowed to pursue his religion.
But even he thinks it’s over. And he’s like an official on this. So. . .
Maybe the baseball gods got Albert Belle's hip.
'Waiting for a girl and she gets me into fights
Waiting for a girl we get drunk on Friday night'
By the time I started following baseball, he had like one or two good seasons left.
I think ’99 was the year he signed in Baltimore and failed hard, right? I started following intensely in ’98.
Looking over his stats made me realize what an incredible player he missed. I thought he was some big, hack-away slugger who hit home runs and that was in. Instead, he seems to have been more like a complete, toolsy player whose power just lorded over everything else.
That's the thing, I don't know that he ever failed.
Every season is pretty damn impressive. ’98 was ridiculous, and he somehow came in 8th for MVP.
’95 was historic. Hell, singular.

I hate the guy as much as the rest of you but seriously people he hasn’t caused us to lose anyone of significance and hasn’t kept anyone else from being promoted this season. Who wouldn't play either
Araias has less than 100 ABs. Thats spread out over 4.5 months. You are talking about ~5 ABs a week over the season and most of those came in April. Since April 29th he has 42 ABs. hes started 7 games in that time. Hes gotten more than 1 AB 8 times in that span. The amount of bitching over his playing time is seriously out of whack with how much he actually plays.
It's not about playing time.
It’s about that he doesn’t provide anything to the roster.

That's not exactly true
Since they have opened up funding for it, there have been some clinical trials that have been approved by that commission that may start soon.
The thing is, there’s considerable backlash against it from some in the stem cell field. It’s not just that embryonic stem cells may be unnecessary, it’s that they may be dangerous. Think about it, you have cells that are undifferentiated, can turn into almost any type of cell, and can grow very quickly.
It would be great at replacing cells…and probably good at turning into cancer as well.

embryonic stem cells
it isn’t that they can go into bone marrow. The real advance is that they can take fibroblasts (essentially skin cells) or anything that normally divides – even a hair follicle – and revert those cell types to embryonic-like stem cells. The process is known as induced pluripotency. Most all evidence now suggests that the cells are almost as good as ES cells with the added benefit of being “your” cells, so there are no transplant concerns.
My guess is the folks who came up with iPS cells will probably get the Nobel Prize within 5 years, it is such a major advance. I work in the field, and I know many labs who had been exclusively ES cell labs have switched over completely.
Go Rice Owls!
Yeah
That might be overstating a bit, but I agree. The iPS stuff is the way to go.

to an extent
but to stem cell biologists they are still somewhat “needed” in order to represent a positive control to designing embryonic independent therapies. They are, by definition, the true stem cell; so understanding how they work is essential to designing other therapies to mimic their behavior.
I doubt many people in the future will ever have ES cells transplanted into them; but it isn’t exactly fair to characterize them as unneeded.
Go Rice Owls!
If I recall correctly,
a study is already in the works that will use embryonic stem cells to try to fix severed spinal cords. There is some pretty strong voices against it.

They went into some initial trials (though I can’t remember if they got into humans or just monkeys) and while it was largely successful, their was some disconcerting side effects in a very small, but significant percentage of the participants.
It’s crazy to me because it’s a vaccine against your own proteins, not a foreign substance, but apparently they’ve shown a decent amount of success. One of the big drug companies is behind it.

I don't think they're prepared to say that now, are they?
I’m assuming you are referring to the tests regarding proteins that build up (can’t remember the proteins right now).
As I remember it, they’ve found some interesting patterns, but no real correlation between the protein buildups and Alzheimer’s.
And… I don’t think they’ve discovered what causes the build up, have they?
Maybe you’re referring to another test though?
by elvis1isking on Aug 17, 2010 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
They do a spinal tap and analyze the CSF for beta-amyloid and tau proteins. They recently announced that they can use this test to diagnose Alzheimer’s 95-100% of the time.
The interesting thing is that these proteins start showing up much sooner than symptoms or changes on imaging. And it was predictive.

Another recent objective marker of the disease is the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid for amyloid beta or tau proteins,89 both total tau protein and phosphorylated tau181P protein concentrations.90 Searching for these proteins using a spinal tap can predict the onset of Alzheimer’s with a sensitivity of between 94% and 100%…Alzheimer’s was diagnosed in one-third of the people who did not have any symptoms in a 2010 study, meaning that disease progression occurs well before symptoms occur.92

Personal taste.
They were good with moments of true greatness but possibly overrated by many.
I don’t begrudge others who worship them because it’s music and it can touch people in truly personal and meaningful ways but I grew up at that time and the only album I ever bought that they did was Zep 2.

lone star showdown - Fpants
The 2009-10 academic calendar year marks the sixth season of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown, and for the fourth time in the first six years of this event, the Longhorns have captured the Showdown title outright

Go in the bar, buy the guy 8 beers, hold his moth open while he pours them down and then tell him his house is on fire and he better get the F home?
"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"
couldn't get that DUI for you
had a swat callout, so that pretty much took up my whole night.
