Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Minors 8/17

Headed to Wichita Falls this morning so I will post this one early.

It does not appear that Travis Chick is destined to become our sexiest new prospect.  Ben Snyder, on the other hand, turned in a yeoman's performance in relief, with 5.1 shutout innings, only 3 baserunners (2 H, 1 BB), and 4 Ks.  Very solid.  I think that guy is going to help this club somehow, at some point.  The Frisco box here: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2010_08_16_tulaax_friaax_1

Today's starters:

  • OKC (7:05): Mehscoso.  It seems like he's pitching every other day.
  • FRI: Off
  • BAK (9:05): Boscan.  He's gotten roughed up 2 of his last 3 outings, but the K/9 and K/BB were still excellent.  He gave up 3 homers last time, but that was the night the wind was blowing straight out to center at 20 mph.  Even Cliff Lee is going to have trouble in that hellish pitcher's environment.  Call me cautiously optimistic about Fredo right now.
  • HIC (6:05): Tullis.  He's been roughed up lately too, but unlike Boscan, he doesn't have shiny strikeout and walk numbers to ameliorate it.
  • SPO (8:35): Randal Rojas.
  • ARI (9:00): Carlos Melo.

Thanks be to BBTiA: http://www.bbtia.com/the-clubhouse/2010/8/15/minor-league-calendar-aug-15-21.html

Questions for today:

1.  Are you optimistic, cautiously optimistic, or not at all optimistic about Boscan prospect status?

2.  Where do you slot Lujack AKA miles into the prospect rankings this winter?

I'm interested to see whether or not people rank LuJack ahead of skole on prospect rankings

its like comparing apples to oranges, but i guess thats what makes this fun. Gotta love Luke’s FB and when he commands that CB well. At this point, i’d still rank Skole ahead of him because he’s showing improvement already this year. I think they’re both fringe top 10 prospects at this point.

Rangers FTW

Yeah, off the top of my head I think I'd lean towards 7-12 range for Skole and 10-15 for Lujack

If Lujack appears in the AZL and does good pitchings or arrives at Instructs and dominates, then the back of the top ten gets even more interesting.

Skole's ARL performance is pretty damned hard for Jackosn to beat

Also, I’m pretty super optimistic regarding Wilfy. I think he’ll do well in the Texas League next year. The increased strikeout numbers this year give me big hope.

Very, if he can be had reasonably.

Arizona overdrafted him, but he’s a very good prospect.

I'm hesitant.

Not many (are there any?) guys have come back from labrum injuries. Eric Hurley is coming back from a similar injury.

Also...

read somewhere a few days ago that he got checked out by the Rangers doc’s after he failed his physical.

Supposedly

His pitching arm looked good in Arizona (Was it NNOC who was praising his velo a month or so back, maybe during the CPPs?), but glove wrist is what’s holding him back now.

Pointless aside, because shoulder injuries are scary as balls.

I wonder if his case isn’t similar to Scheppers’. Someone should tweet @injuryexpert

I think you're right

Also, you should read the second sentence with accentuation on the word ‘are’, to indicate agreement.

Shoulder injuries AREscary as balls.

As in, you’re correct, shoulder injuries are scary. As balls.

Your assessment of Tullis and Boscan

Tullis has a better K rate than Boscan and a better GB rate (as he did in 2009). If you’re going to ameliorate Boscan’s performance, use the league and park factors instead.

I found this note from Jamison very interesting:
Foremost among the club’s pitching prospects is probably righthander David Perez, who is 4-4, 1.41 in 13 starts, with 62 strikeouts and eight walks in 64 innings, a 2.38 groundout-to-flyout rate, a .202 opponents’ batting average, and zero home runs allowed. Perez hasn’t allowed a run in his last 33 innings, scattering 14 hits and two walks in that stretch while punching out 29.

They ran wild on them

to say the least. Even stole a base on a pitchout.

by JasonCole on Aug 18, 2010 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

I figure the wild pitch

was probably a result of Tullis trying too hard after one of them as well. Is this a Tullis issue, or a Zaneski one, or just a freak occurence?

Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!

by t ball on Aug 18, 2010 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

A little bit of both

Tullis doesn’t have much of a leg kick but he’s still somewhat slow to home plate. And Zaneski wasn’t the most accurate thrower last night, although he was getting off to a slow start because of Tullis.

by JasonCole on Aug 18, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not surprised

given that Tullis hasn’t been pitching as long as others his age. Hopefully time cures that a bit.

I wonder if hes getting tired

Lets remember he was drafted initially in 08 but didn’t sign and sat out almost a full season only getting a handful of starts in an independant league before being drafted by us. Then we waited until the last minute signing him so this year is his first full season in ~2 years.

I doubt he's working on his changeup out of the pen, but what you said is one consideration.

Also, he’s never been on an erratic pitching schedule. He had his first back-to-back outing on the 13th-14th. He doesn’t appear to be responding too well to that experiment.

Fredo has a K/BB of 65/8… thats almost Cliff Lee esque. Both him and Weiland are two guys I expect to bloom in AA next year.

Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'
