Tom Verducci calls Josh Hamilton the best player in baseball
Not news to any of us, but it's cool that he said he may be the best talent since Mickey Mantle.

I laughed at that as well.
That might be worse than Neftali Perez

Well, there's a former player named Pedro Borbon.
Immortalized in the movie Airplane.

Now pinch-hitting for Pedro Borbon....

I'd say it's closer to 4/80
"Drinks are on me if Lewis posts >168IP and an era lower than 3.86." by RangerMad on Jan 20, 2010 12:36 PM PST
4/80 is a bit steep
since he is under team control for two more seasons.
If he is a $20 million player – and given that he’s an injury risk, that is probably the peak, I’d probably say $8-9 million for next year and $14-15 for the year after.
So 4/60, given the discount associated with the Rangers taking on all of the injury risk, is fair
Go Rice Owls!
Him and Cliffly would add ~35mil to next year's payroll
Both of those things will not happen in the same offseason.

Well
Hamilton will almost certainly be getting $8 million next year regardless. You could structure the long-term deal to escalate his pay so that he’s not getting a full amount in 2011 and 2012. But you’re pretty much committing the Rangers to be a $100 million payroll team in a few years if you want to keep Lee too.
With the raises due several Rangers, adding Lee won’t be trivial. It is doable, but not trivial.
Go Rice Owls!
Right
"I support you, Wash; I’ve always supported you," Young said
"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
I haven't had a chance to look more closely at the numbers
But I think being truly competitive to sign Lee will probably come down to what round the Rangers make it to in the playoffs. I think if they make the ALCS that they would make enough this year that they weren’t expecting that, combined with subsequent increase in ticket sales next year, they could make it a realistic competition with the Yankees.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

4/80 is a bit steep...
Even if you think he’s a $25MM/year in years 3 and 4, discount his last two arb years to 60 and 80% of that, you end up with 15/20/25/25 for $75MM. 4/80 seems too high to me as well.
It would be interesting to know how the market would discount that further for his history (both injury and drug). Maybe 4/60 is right, I don’t know, but in general there’s not much precedent to refer to. His contract/extension situation will be very interesting to watch.
he's only making 3.5 this year, or something close to that
no way he’d get up to 15 million in arbitration this year.
Go Rice Owls!
I just hope
we can get Manny Mota to PH for him.

at least there is no Arias in the lineup
if yesterday finally got us to the point where we will stop making extraordinary efforts to keep control of it, maybe there is a tiny bit of silver lining in the dark clouds of yesterday. Too bad to see that Young isn’t right back in the lineup, hopefully right back in there tomorrow.
Arias will not be a Ranger in 48 hours.

good at getting on base, still pretty good defense, versatile if not great in the field. I always thought he deserved to have more of a major league career than he has actually gotten.

Last I had looked they had the same ammount of errors at 15,
but that was a few weeks ago, so it may have changed a little.
Regardless, I don’t feel much better with Cantu out there.

If that ball that hit the seam in the carpet
that got by Cantu happened to get by Face, there would have been holy hell within LSB.
Same with the ball that was half-assed by Tiny E.

It's out of hand in this place.
Most of LSB is acting as though GNettles or BRobinson never hit into a DP, have a ball get thru the hole or go down the line for a double.
It’s become a LSB Bit.

Josey, let's get real man, Young sucks at 3rd, it would be better served for him to move...would it not?
He’s been great offensively, but he sucks D with the glove.
I love Young, but he sucks in the field.

I think he's having a real bad year at 3B this year (defensively).
He started slow last year but showed improvement towards the end.
Not sure what the future holds for him but Jeter got better in 2009 than he did at 2008.
I don’t think it’s Young’s skillset so much as it is unfamiliarity with the position and a lack of confidence.
That’s not an excuse, he should be better than he has been but the criticism he receives in here is over the top and it totally stems from him treating LSB Favorite Son JD like dog shit on his cleats before the 2009 season.

Given that his arm is considered his strongest asset on D...
Can someone explain why he plays so damn shallow?? It seems to me like that exaggerates his weak reaction times.

maybe bc he is slow coming in on the ball?

So when exactly will Mike get "familiar" and "confident" with the position?
I would imagine that spring training and all of last year, then spring training and every game so far this year would be plenty of time to get familiar with a position. It’s not like he is transitioning from the outfield to infield or moving from catcher to second base. He just moved from short stop to third base, I realize they are different positions, but I would imagine for a professional infielder, the learning curve wouldn’t be 2 full seasons.
by michael bluth on Aug 17, 2010 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions
He never will
because he’s not good defensively. Its stupid to think that at this point, after 2 full seasons and offseasons to prepare for the position, that he will all of a sudden be anything more than below average.

Not defending
Cantu or Elvis, but there were plenty of other things that were causing holy hell at the time. Hard to hate on those two when Arias is doing his thing.
Also, Cantu is
at best just as bad as Young defensively. TotalZone and UZR have him as worse, and DRS says about equal.
Yeah, Cantu is terrible
