LSB Peeps Kicking it in a Suite
Well, thanks to the poster known as Section 339, arrangements have been made for a suite at TBIA to be available for LSB peeps for Saturday night, August 28, for the game against Oakland.
I will be there, as will Ben, among other folks. The suite holds 20 folks, and it is $100 per person. We have a few spots available still, so if anyone is interested and would like to come join us, speak up in the comments section and let us know.
UPDATE -- Or click here and shoot an email to 339 directly.

I've skimmed through the other threads becasue I didn't think it would actually happen, but...
Is this BYOB?
and
At $100, this seems very reasonable. I thought it was $150?
It is a special discounted rate
S339 got us hooked up.
No food/beverage service included in this price.

Good lord, 100 dollars would so be worth it.
Unfortunately, the other hundreds of dollars for air fare and hotels and food and the whole missing work and classes thing is not.
This is the most jealous I’ve been of you people yet.

Yeah I'll just have to stay up here in my private suite,

Damn, I wish I lived anywhere near Arlington...
I’m sure Ben will take this Meet Up as an opportunity to round up some investors for his Beer Store.

It's not that bad, if you take it slow and are willing to look some stats terms up.
MGL is assuming some background knowledge, for sure, but this is actually not one of the more math-intensive posts over there.
But in any event, I’m likely write something about this in a Rangers context soon-ish. I’m slammed with work, but it’s high on my priorities, since it seems to get a good discussion going every time it’s raised.

What's the main point?
I think I see what he’s saying. But, his conclusion seemed to be that we’ll never know what a pitcher’s true BABIP is until he’s done. We can assume that the farther from the avg BABiP the pitcher is, the less likely that it will sustain?
Well then... I would like to see this Jeff Sullivan pornagraphy.
by ghostofErikThompson on Aug 11, 2010 10:35 PM PDT
by Feliz es bueno on Aug 18, 2010 11:25 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
His point:
We shouldn’t claim that pitchers have zero influence on their BABiP, since there are pitchers (amidst the narrow distribution) who are very likely to have “true” BABiPs that deviate from the average because of some degree of skill (or lack thereof). That deviation falls across a relatively narrow range, though, and so the more extreme the one-year result, the more you have to question whether it’s sustainable.
But I liked Guy’s point:, and the reply from Tango, just as much as anything MGL wrote.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 18, 2010 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions
Yep
love that entry. I’ve long been fascinated by BABIP. I used to think the next great market inefficiency in baseball would be finding pitchers who could exert a greater deal of control over everything but the three true outcomes but I’m slowly coming to the realization that It’s just not realistic.

Thanks for that link Josh
There are a couple of points that I think should be taken into consideration when discussing BABiP
1)I think everyone can agree that BABiP is affected by team defense, variations in the playing field (hitters’ vs pitchers’ park), and by the quality of the batters faced. With that in mind I think that when evaluating a pitcher’s BABiP, in order to assess the pitcher’s actual influence one should compare his BABiP to the team baseline (avg) for that season. In other words, if the Rangers are as a team pitching with a BABiP of .280, pitcher X’s BABiP should be compared to .280 vs the historical league avg of .300. That eliminates as much as possible the influence of the defense, ballpark, batters faced since his team pitching has performed under generally the exact same environment as him.
2)I don’t think that you can ever expect “true talent” to stay fixed despite the effects of aging and injuries. The amount of wear that a pitcher experiences over his career since childhood is immense, and there aren’t many sports where there is not a noticeable decline in performance over time. I think pitchers are able to mitigate some of the decline by adjusting their repertoire more than say a quarterback, but there is a reason we don’t want to give the Cliff Lee’s a 6 yr contract
3)L vs R BABiP splits – some of the incredible splits destroy the null hypothesis that pitchers have a small influence on small influence on BABiP. Look at 2010 Trevor Cahill (.257 v L, .165 v R!) and CJ (.154 v L, .284 v R). The number of batters they faced have been more than enough for statistical significance, and they have roughly a 100pt of differential between their splits, which is 14-15x the std deviation for BABiP. While they may not be able to sustain it over a career, there is no doubt that each is exerting a large influence over their BABiP this season.
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
Those are some crzy splits,
but I think there’s also a question of “influenced skill” vs “talent/nature,” although I’m not really happy with either of those category labels.
Sticking with CJ and Cahill, their career numbers still have pretty big BABIP splits (well, much less so for Cahill). CJ: 312/229. 571 PA isn’t too big to be prone to some pretty big BABIP swings (look at some of Pedro’s great seasons, in some of them he still has a 300+ BABIP despite being awesome). However, since it’s spread out across multiple seasons, and you have a solid natural factor to separate the categories like handedness, you have to think it’s more than noise.
My hunch is that the split for CJ is more due to handedness/the nature of his stuff and what it does to lefties vs righties than to some other separate BABIP-influencing skill. I think the split is probably maintainable — he’s done it so far in his career — but that this year’s particular numbers have a bit of room to come up a bit against both types of batters.
For instance, on the opposite side of things, last year he had a 341/290 split, and the number of the lefty batter side of that in particular looks like the result of some bad luck in a relatively small sample. Which matches my intuition from watching him last year of “damn, this guy can’t catch a break with all this crap going for hits.” (The eye test can be unreliable, but when it and the overall statistical trends say the same thing, I think it’s a good piece of collaborating evidence.)
It's very questionable
whether to combine numbers across TBF for pitchers who’ve served as both relievers and starters. There’s at least some evidence to show that relievers have different BABIP than starters, and most of the arguments about BABIP are applied to “tenured starters” or something along those lines.
“The Book” provides guidelines on TBF for judging splits around wOBA, but I need to think about how/if would apply to BABIP. The wOBA split rule of thumb is 450 TBF for LHP against LHB. Wilson is, of course, not even close to that as a starter.
So are platoon BABIP splits across 570+ PA for each not usually that large?
The large amount of batters required to stabilize makes me really wish I had the time to look into what distribution best fit batting outcomes, since that makes me think it definitely isn’t well-modeled by the binomial.
Well, Dave Cameron took one look at it,
which is here. Jeremy Greenhouse has done some terrific work here. And there’s Tango’s classic, which includes a citation of our own AJM.
My take-away: there are pitchers (like Zito) who definitely seem to be able to influence BABIP by hand. Whether Wilson is one of them is, to my mind, still an open question. But my mind is also open.
I think it’s unlikely that if Wilson logs several more years as a starter, though, the platoon BABIP gap will be as large as it is this year.

The stuff about sinker/slider vs changup/splitter affecting it as well is interesting.
Also interesting that Feldman this year hasn’t had too dissimilar results against righties, BABIP-wise, but has a 101-point higher BABIP against lefties than last year. Funny how that works out…
I agree to a a large extent with your first 2 points,
and would expect that MGL and other folks would, as well.
On the second point, I think there’s something to the splits, but I’m wondering on what you’re basing your claim to statistical significance. It certainly doesn’t stack up with any other research I’ve read. Show your work, please?

what kind of research do you need?

I didn't ask for "research."
I asked for you to show your work. If you’re performing a t-test, how do you not know what work to show? Just show me what you’re doing. Report all of your assumptions and your findings.
That requires a really, really big assumption.
An assumption that carries several other things with it that I don’t think you’d agree with… in addition to just not working very well in the first place, unless you think pitchers and batters are basically changing into entirely different players every month or so.
Be careful, Closure.
You’re giving advice to a guy who took stats at MIT, worked with Robert Weinberg for two years, and has co-authored several scientific papers and chapters.
I'm not a statistician by any stretch
but doesn’t a z-test assume a random sample from two independent groups?
by Josh Garoon on Aug 19, 2010 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions
It has to do with the population standard deviations.
And proportions are a special case there which I’ve always seen referred to as z-tests. IIRC it’s because of the nature of the normal approximation of the binomial distribution and the nature of the resulting standard deviation estimate (maybe CLT related?), but I’d have to dig back into a book to tell you exactly why.
Er, "with the population standard deviations and whether or not they're known."
In a t-test you use s, the sample std dev, in a z-test you use \sigma, the population one.
Oh, I think I remembered the reason now:
The standard deviation of the normal approximation of the binomial depends solely on the proportion and n. You don’t have a population vs sample standard deviation distinction in quite the same way.
Right.
But in thinking through the way I’d want to conduct significance testing on this, I’m not sure the assumptions needed for the z-test hold. Normally, for a z-test, you’re not getting results from the same person more than once within each sample, for example.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 19, 2010 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions
Well Z vs T is just a naming nitpick here.
The test is going to be the same either way.
With both proportions coming from the same person you could pool it, but the biggest assumptions you’re (probably) violating are more basic ones (like independent observations).
Not familiar with the terminology,
but some quick googling suggets that it’s a synonym for a two sided test? That’s what I’ve been picturing the whole time.
yes. We used to call it a twin tailed test
same as a two sided test

This makes me happy.
Not because you feel out of place, but because I think it reflects the open-mindedness you want when you’re thinking about what the stats tell us.
So much for the idea that folks who rely on stats can’t let go of their models.

if that is what you are suggesting. But we’re talking about a lot of work that would be required
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
But you suggested
a very simple (probably inappropriate) model as evidence backing your argument. How do you reconcile that with what you’re saying here?
by Josh Garoon on Aug 19, 2010 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions
you have to look at #1
there are going to be many variables unaccounted for when comparing BABiP of one pitcher one season on one team versus the BABiP of another pitcher of another season on another team. My hypothesis is that you can eliminate a lot of that variability and make a more valid comparison when you only compare that pitcher against his team pitching avg for that season
Now in terms of doing a probability analysis for significance, you do not have to construct a complex model when you pare it down to a single variable having only 2 outcomes when you have tried to hold constant all the unknowns by using the expected outcomes from within the same environment, as above.
Let’s take BGL’s BABiP vs lefties this season. He has faced 125 lefty batters with 12 hits. Using FG’s BABiP of .154 and subtracting HBP, BB, K it looks like he had roughly 81 balls put into play. So in 81 occurrences 12 positive (hits) results occurred and 69 negative (outs) results occurred. The expected results would be .280(avg BABiP of Rangers pitchers 2010) x 81 occurrences which would be 23 positive results. So we observed 12 positives results when 23 positives were expected, in 81 independent trials each with a constant probability of success. With that in mind a Bernoulli trial gives us a p=.0019, a std error of 4.06, confidence interval of 95%. In other words, his results are not anywhere near.
Now for Closure’s sake, I’ll stress again that this theoretically should be more valid because we are using a rough baseline (team BABiP) from where field variations, team defense, batters faced should be relatively eliminated, versus league historical average.
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
I guess I wasn't clear.
I’m still very skeptical of the applicability of a binomial test to batting outcomes, regardless of the baseline you’re comparing against:
1) I don’t think batters or pitchers are truly independent and/or able to me modeled with a single parameter — there are some days when they have better stuff than others, and I also think there are non-random (if still not completely controllable (physical issues would fall into this category)) factors that can cause streaks and such.
2) (The big one for me.) I think it’s still squashing too much information into a single variable. All hits get recorded the same, whether it’s an infield single or a line drive or anything in between to any part of the field. BABIP is basically a synthesis of stuff like LD/GB/FB/etc rates + the locations of where those types of hit went. When you consider the number of underlying variables and the number of possible values they can take that go into whether or not a ball in play goes for a hit, you start to see why you’d need much larger sample sizes than for simple proportions.
I think you and I are on the same page
I am just putting this out there, simplifying as much as possible by eliminating as many variables as possible to take a look whether a .154 BABiP vs lefties is a statistical anomaly. The significance from this calc is so far away from “noise” that I don’t see how it could be ignored. Especially when it is conventional wisdom that “lefties are tougher on lefties” and with the sabermetric postulate brought up by JG that there is an expected BABiP difference between RP and SP.
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
No!
This is not a proper application of the model! You are violating assumptions left and right, and as a result, your findings are not interpretable in the way you would like them to be.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 19, 2010 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions
what assumptions? List them. Bring the math
From a practical standpoint you have to accept some imperfection because there is no way to make it perfect. But when you eliminate as much of the variability as you can, and get a probability value which more than an order beyond acceptable significance then there should be some weight to it.
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
I already did, above. But to recap:
your test assumes that you’re comparing random samples from independent groups. Contrary to what you wrote, for example, the 81 trials, for example, are not independent. They cluster.
There’s also a problem taking the population BABIP and running it through a sample size of 81, rather than using the full data set. You’re basically assuming that the Rangers .280 is the “true” expected BABIP for the team, even though (a) there’s no reason to believe that’s the case, and good reason to believe it’s not; and (b) Wilson’s own performance contributes heavily to that BABIP. Tango covers this in more detail in his book, I’d advise reading it.
Finally, it’s worth pointing out that you’re using terms, in places, that are meaningless. The line about “95% confidence interval,” for example — what was that interval? It doesn’t mean anything just to say it exists, just as it doesn’t mean anything just to say you’ll conduct a two-tailed test to fix the problems of violated assumptions.
In sum, there are a number of problems with the test you ran. and Closure and I both pointed this out before you ran it.
But it doesn’t seem you want to actually discuss this, since you keep ignoring valid points and repeating lines about “eliminat[ing] as much of the variability as you can” and “par[ing] it down to a single variable having only 2 outcomes when you have tried to hold constant all the unknowns by using the expected outcomes from within the same environment, as above.” You haven’t actually done that.
I mean, just re-read this:
We don’t mean the standard deviation of the measured stats, as measured stats include effects of random fluctuations — which we have already shown can be quite large (even for a significant number of plate appearances). Rather, what we are after is the standard deviation of the underlying skill levels.
You’re doing exactly what Tango says we can’t do.
we really should move this because now its like reading the classifieds
but
1)the definition of independent trials is that the each trial should have the exact same chance of success or failure, without influencing the other trials. They are not clusters at all. Ichiro’s bloop single vs Wilson in the 3rd on May 10 has no effect on Ortiz’ chances for success vs Wilson in in the 7th inning on June 24.This is pretty basic stuff. I would suggest reading something like Probability and Statistical Inference, Hogg and Tanis to review some core stats.
2)if you eliminate Wilson’s (L) BABiP from the team average, he performance will be even farther from the avg, driving the statistical significance even higher. It would not reduce the significance.
But if you wish, let’s just compare Wilson’s BABiP vs L against his BABiP vs R – him against himself. Can you possibly deny that he is not more effective vs lefties(get good contact off of) – lower BA (.106 vs .241), lower SLG, lower BABiP (.150 vs .284). This is the argument in a nutshell. If talented pitchers did not have an effect on BABiP, there should no reason to have handed matchups.
3)my 95% CI numbers were cut off. 3.04<11<18.95
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
My point about independence
was with regard to at-bats within individual batters (Suzuki 1 versus Suzuki 2 versus Suzuki 3), not between them (Suzuki versus Ortiz). I’m not sure how much that would affect things in a sample size of 81 — but I do think it challenges the assumption of a t-test. Do you disagree?
I’ve actually asked my wife to think through this, as well, because she’s more of a stats person than I am. I think the basic sticking point is whether a t-test is a valid test when you’re comparing one outlying individual to a group of individuals from which that individual has been drawn.
On Wilson: no one has ever said he’s not more effective versus LHB. The question, as from the start, is how much of that effectiveness is attributed to skill, and how much to random variation.
I agree that at this point, it might be worth taking this to a FanPost. Maybe folks with a better stats pedigree can weigh in.
I actually pondered it a bit more
and you may have a point about the cluster effect of batters, and stadiums. The fielding should remain constant. However that is part of the whole reason I wanted to compare Wilson vs the Rangers BABiP to make those effects cancel out.
I think this discussion merits it’s own thread as it has potential to be a very stimulating exercise.
Now go taunt some more Orioles fans!

why don't you disprove the hypothesis that the BABiP splits are significant?
since you seem to be the expert statistician here?
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
Well, first of all:
I’m not a statistician by any stretch, and I don’t know how I can be clearer about that.
But more importantly, you don’t “disprove” hypotheses in the way you’re suggesting, and the burden really remains on you to show the work to back your point.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 19, 2010 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions
The lack of projectability they provide,
per Garoon’s links, is really all I need to see.
Either they aren’t significant at those sample sizes, large as they may look, or pitcher’s just don’t have a ton of ability to keep repeating the particular actions that lead to them year-after-year (close to your original point 2), in which case they’re not particularly useful for projection anyway. The data appears to suggest that one of those two things is true, and I’m not particularly concerned with which…
There are a number of issues.
But here’s a passage from “The Book” (the actual one, not the blog) that I think, based on my limited stats understanding, is especially relevant:
We… need to measure the inherent player-to-player variation in a particular skill (in other words, differences in the underlying skill levels of players). We don’t mean the standard deviation of the measured stats, as measured stats include effects of random fluctuations — which we have already shown can be quite large (even for a significant number of plate appearances). Rather, what we are after is the standard deviation of the underlying skill levels.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 19, 2010 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, the ability for the noise level to be quite high even for a large number PAs,
is what makes me reject the use of a statistical test based on the normal distribution.
I've been re-reading the Appendix
to The Book, which is where Tango, MGL, and Dolphin show their work, and it reminds me that I need to go back and brush up. It’s been a while.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 19, 2010 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions
that quote is exactly why I posted point #1
to eliminate as many variables/fluctuations as possible when examining a pitcher’s influence on BABiP, you need to compare him to a baseline for his team that year which would theoretically minimize the effect of the pitching environment.
In terms of whether or not a RP vs SP would have different BABiP, to accept that there should be a difference while discrediting the notion that pitchers have more than just a little influence on BABiP is contradictory! If there is little influence, there should be little difference whether you are pitching in the 3rd vs 9th inning, whether you are facing a L or R, etc.
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
You're building a strawman.
You really should read up on what people are actually arguing. The argument has, generally, been about how much control well tenured starting pitchers have over their BABIP. It has moved well past the idea that they have no influence, or that there aren’t differences between types of pitchers.
I don’t understand how you wouldn’t have grasped that if you’ve read what I’ve posted…
And just to be clear: I’m not, and never have, argued that Wilson has zero control over his BABIP, or that platoon split doesn’t matter to that control. All I’ve said, from the start, is that I’m skeptical that Wilson can maintain the large split he’s racked up this year over time.
Put another way, I’m very skeptical that the size of that split is merely a reflection of his talent, or his skill in controlling BABIP. And I haven’t seen any evidence to convince me that my skepticism is unwarranted. I’m still open to seeing it.
Also, the quote above goes far beyond your first point.

Well, Closure has to go,
and I probably should, as well. In any event, I think the subject’s pretty well played out for now.
I will say that It’s frustrating to see main arguments get bogged down in arguments from authority and critiques applied to arguments that aren’t actually being advanced.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 19, 2010 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions
When it comes to BP/SP, batters are probably going to be acting differently,
when it comes to a reliever who largely appears in games where his team has the lead and there are only a couple of innings left, which I’d expect would also lead to differences in BABIP.
But the thing I’d been waiting on finally finished, so I can actually get back to work now, so I should probably do that…

I'm listening to RPiA right now, AJM calling you out made me laugh out loud in my office

I was taken by surprise, and he'd even told me he did it.
I don’t know why I didn’t believe him. Ted got a huge kick out of it, too, obviously. Jamey, maybe not so much?
Oh, I thought I heard Jamey laughing in the background
Of course, you know Jamey, he’s one of those bandwagon Rangers fans. And always so negative.

I wasn't sure if Jamey reads LSB enough to get the reference.
Or maybe I couldn’t hear him laughing over Ted, who was seriously cracking up. (I have to imagine Ted does read LSB enough to get the reference.)
Ha
Not enough middle names. You’ve gotta add Kalman Chaim Yisroel in there.
The unnecessary long names are actually a product of a belief that if your child is sick, you add names normally associated with blessings or good fortune. Some parents pre-empt the troubles and make their child’s name unmanageable at birth.

Yeah, but that screws up the beautiful simplicity of "AM Snark."
Though really, I should have chosen Pinchas Mendel. In fact, let’s just pretend I did.
His name… was Pinchas Mendel Snark.
I say
go with multiple identities. You can choose between Dayman (Fighter of the nightman) and Nightman depending on your mood and whether you’re trying to scare away trolls from Tampa Bay.

Not a bad idea.
So right now, just call me Avrum Mendel, I suppose.
The draysbays guys are a Fun Bunch. I wound up reading a few other threads while over there a couple days ago, just to get an idea of what I was diving in to. It’s an interesting place.
Ha. My mom's maiden name is Smith.
I’m very glad she go married to someone with a non-S-starting last name.
Well, hell, I'll throw my lot in with the cult of personality if he shows up bearing Dogfish Head.
Someone will have to report back.

DJ, thanks for including me in the real deal list.
If it is not already clear, Rangers fans are going to love Chuck Greenberg as the Managing General Partner of this franchise.
It is such a relief to have someone in an ownership position that understands the game and really cares about the fans having a good time when they come to the ballpark. For years I have presented proposal after proposal to improve the fan experience at the ballpark and in everything that we do, finally somebody that cares and listens.
Thanks
Chuck Morgan

YouTube Joan Osborne doing "What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted" and "Heat Wave"
with the Funk Brothers. Holy hell that woman has soul.
'Waiting for a girl and she gets me into fights
Waiting for a girl we get drunk on Friday night'
She's got an album full of soul standards.
That’s really where she should be. An old soul, her 90s music doesn’t do her justice.
The best interpreter since Ronstadt, imo.

Oh well, I wouldn’t have been able to to post witty pics/gifs from the suite.

I’d like to try, but I’d hate to waste any DFH.

I was going to e-mail him back because $100 is a pretty sweet deal, but
A. Things came up, and
B. I would probably make an drunken ass out of myself in front of the owner of the Texas Rangers and some of the prominent members of LSB whose opinions I highly respect.
So yeah, pass. I’ll just get tanked in the bar with my other asshole friends.
