Monday a.m. Rangers things

BALTIMORE - AUGUST 22: Neftali Feliz #30 of the Texas Rangers celebrates with Taylor Teagarden #2 after a 6-4 victory against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on August 22 2010 in Baltimore Maryland. (Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images)

So, after all that, the Rangers end that lousy road trip up 8 on both Anaheim and Oakland.

Jeff Wilson says in his game story that several bad trends ended yesterday, including Vladimir Guerrero's homerless streak, Josh Hamilton's mini-slump, and Tommy Hunter's recent habit of going only three innings.

In the game story on the Ranger website, Josh Hamilton is quoted as saying that there was more energy in the dugout yesterday.

The S-T notes include updates on Scott Feldman, who could be going to the disabled list today, and Matt Treanor, who could be activated from the disabled list today.

The notes on the Rangers website have quotes from Michael Kirkman on his successful major league debut, and an update on Cristian Guzman, who has begun running, although it doesn't sound like he'll be activated until rosters expand.

Gil Lebreton has a column up saying that none of the trade deadline deals Jon Daniels made in 2010 have worked out so far, although he does note that, despite a 22-24 record when he starts, the pitchers are raving about Bengie Molina's "preparation and game-handling skills."

Evan Grant takes a look at how the playoff race is shaking out for the Rangers right now.

And Richard Durrett runs down what Rangers fans should be watching for this week.

Just to start a fun Monday subthread

Interesting all this talk about how we “had no energy” in TB and Balt., coming off those two blast-furnace day games on the last homestand.

But the heat isn’t an issue, so NM.

Boston won both series 2-1

there’s a difference in playing like shit and being drained from it being hot.

by sam in so cal on Aug 23, 2010 9:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Heat talk...

The Rangers spent end of June in Anaheim…cool weather.

The next homestand (10 days) just before the AS Break, it rained a ton in North Texas and while humid, it wasn’t the blast-furnace.

Then they have the AS Break (played in Anaheim, so those who played did so in cool weather) and 7 games in Boston/ Detroit.

The blast-furnace does get turned up when they come home to play Angels / A’s and Rangers go 5-2 but they then get 10 days of moderate / cool weather (Seattle, Oakland, LAAA) before facing the true hell winds of August and some of the meanest weather NTexas has to offer.

If you look at it, from late June to August 10, they had one real bad week of weather. It’s not a viable excuse and never has been.

In reference to heat I mean

the reason the Rangers haven’t played well in late summer for a while is most likely the fact that they just haven’t had any good teams. Kind of like Boston and “the curse”.

by macromorgan on Aug 23, 2010 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

And that has WHAT to do with their "lack of energy" on this roadtrip exactly??

Just a tip – some topics can actually be about present or near-present events without a trip down memory lane.

Put another way..

Just because there may not be any heat-related swoon from a “macro” standpoint, it is certainly plausible that a human body could be drained for a day or two after that experience, especially some guys who haven’t played all that much this season.

I'm usually pretty crappy at video games

but I had absolutely no problem with that one. Just like River City Ransom, it pays to spend a good deal of time leveling up your character. If you can amass $504 to pay off Scott’s video fines at the beginning of the game, you can almost instantly hit the max level on all your stats. At that point, the game becomes a lot more fun.

no

he was nastier when he had his slider working a couple weeks ago. whenever he throws his upper 90s heat then is able to put the slider where he wants, it’s devastating. He’s absolutely unhittable. he just tends to drop down and throw his slider from a different arm angle sometimes which flattens it out and makes it easier to recognize and hit.

The #1 thing Neffy needs to do this offseason is work on his breaking pitches. When he can throw them, they’re filthy and he’s unhittable. But more often than not the break isn’t there and he can’t locate worth crap.

vlad is hitting the ball harder

and is starting to look more like the beginning of the season. he was hitting at the beginning of the year, but his shots weren’t going over the fence. those started later, and I’d expect that trend to continue here, especially when Kinsler and Cruz get back in the lineup and there is less pressure on him.

he’s not striking out or grounding weakly to the 3B every time. He’s been much better.

I think it's a combination of things with Vlad.

Some of it is age but more of it is probably him just leveling off. I don’t know of anybody who was expecting him to throw down a .900+ OPS like he did in the first half of the season.

Look at his splits from 2006-2008 – He always has at least one bad month. This time his slump went from mid-July to mid-August.

He’s fine and doesn’t need to rest.

The most amusing thing is that they have the Padres 2nd… any listing of team’s by how interesting they are to watch that has the Padres anywhere above 25th is quite simply wrong. I live in San Diego, am a huge baseball fan, and I doubt I could name you 10 people on that team. They may be really, really good, but they are really, really, really boring to watch.

Reading the methodology in detail

I realize the flaw in the analysis that led to this travesty. And he listed it too, as well as an additional one that keeps me from watching Padres games.

His stat uses park adjusted home runs, which is great and all, unless you don’t really want to watch dead-ball offense played in Petco Park; where home runs, doubles, everything become pop-outs.

He also suggests that there should be a correction for great/bad announcers. This too would drop San Diego by about 5 spots right there too…

well, mr step-and-a-dive

you’re cute nicknames are a) obnoxious, b) insulting to the players, c) insulting to the rest of us, and d) completely unwanted.

Keeping Neftali Feliz, Elvis Andrus, and Julio Borbon focused, as well as the other 22 members of the team, is Ron Washington’s JOB. If he can’t do that, then he needs to be gone. Yes, there are veterans on the team (like Vladimir Guerrero) who should be able to help, but its not an insult to say that they have to be kept focused. Remember that they, along with Tommy Hunter, Derek Holland, Matt Harrison, Mitch Moreland, and others on the team are still very young, and not used to the long season.

You get unfocused at AA or AAA and no one cares (or you have 6 coaches jump on you, depending on the situation). In the Majors, you are expected to do everything for yourself. Because you are treated the same way as a 10 year veteran, and 10 year veterans don’t want a manager bitching them out when they screw up (see Showalter, Buck).

Oh for Christ's sake - listening to Colin Cowherd discuss the Rangers - again (I know, stop)

He said how Cliff Lee wanted to be a Yankee and doesn’t like being a Ranger. That’s why YESTERDAY he mailed it in against the Orioles. But against the elite teams he tries to showcase his talent – i.e. against the Rays. And this little report was teased before a commercial yet he can’t get the days even remotely close.

For fuck’s sake figure out the date he pitched during your commercial break. And why did he yell “fuck” after giving up one of those HRs during the Orioles game? Because he didn’t give a shit? I can’t say whether he wants to be a Ranger or not but he’s pitched his ass off for them. As far as wanting to sign with an “elite” team – who has the biggest lead in baseball right now?

Why do I do this to myself? Why do I listen to this fucktard?

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

I've listened

to Cowherd for years. Outside of Mariner’s baseball during the 70’s, he doesn’t know all that much about the sport. He’s pretty good when it comes to college football, but baseball not so much. Besides, all he talks about is Yankees-Red Sox.

Yup

Although I think you understated how shitty he is. I used to think he was decent at college football too. He just related how Boise State should “never, never” play for a national championship. His hyperbole is so fucking annoying.

My friend from Boston...

….kept making comments to me this last Saturday how “Cliff Lee just hasn’t pitched well for you guys.” I kept telling him he’s a dumbass and why he’s a dumbass for saying that, but he never absorbed anything I was saying. Boston idiot listening to other Boston/ESPN idiots say that Lee has not done well for us is all he hears.

CLIFF LEE

has one “not-so-good” start (his first one where he gave up 4 bombs) and one bad start (Saturday) as a Ranger. The rest have been good, really good, and even masterful. When you’re a dude who throws that many strikes, you’re gonna have a bad day location-wise once in a while. I wouldn’t count on CLIFF LEE not looking sharp when they throw him out there again.

Here's what I sent to Colin - why? I don't know
You were wrong on the day Cliff Lee pitched twice in the same segment. He didn’t pitch yesterday – he pitched Saturday. You teased this bit before a commercial and couldn’t get that simple fact checked? And do you know why the Yankees couldn’t trade for him? Because their farm system is a wasteland. Their “big boy” style of baseball has exhausted their farm. Stop talking about baseball because you sound like an idiot.

another crazy Japanese league catch…it’s the same team as the “Spider Man” catch from a few weeks ago and the same pitcher on the mound, but a different CF. If Smoak were in the Japanese league, this would be what would happen to him 4 times a game.

I was looking at the player ratings...

on ESPN.com and they had Hamilton 10th. I couldn’t figure out how that was possible. It appears they average out 4 seperate rankings and one of them is from Inside Edge. They have Hamilton as the 59th best player in baseball. ESPN has him 2nd, Elias 4th, and TBE 3rd.

Crazy.

Are their rankings a year old?

There is no way anyone can say Hamilton is anything short of a top 10 player in baseball this year and really, there is little argument that he is less than top 3.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
