70-54
Even though it ended up being two outs from special, it was still nice to see Good Rich Harden show up.
It might not be a No-Hitter but it's still a big win.

The Twins. The second best offense in baseball.
Sure, they’re missing Morneau, but Thome has been incredible this year. And the only guy who got a hit was a dinky single, and he’s one of the best hitters in baseball.

Anyone who blames Feliz needs to be banned.
Feliz threw an 0-2 pitch at 97mph out of the zone, and a great hitter put wood on it. That’s a good pitch and a better hit.
Let’s celebrate what it was — a one-hit shutout over a team you’re chasing — instead of mourning what it wasn’t.

I don’t always have sex with men…but when I do, I prefer Josh Hamilton. - AJM
Not as useful tonight
with the lack of a box and tracker. Most likely that is just someone (RangerFloppy?) guessing from the replay
That's right.
My MLB at bat gamecast had pitch locations that bore no resemblance to what I was watching on the TV.
It was definitely strange tonight.
More grist for the mill.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 23, 2010 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions
According to the TV guys, the "pitch tracker" was broken.
I didn’t realize that the broadcast used the same system as Gameday, but that certainly seems to have been the case.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 23, 2010 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions
I am not sure if the tv tracker is the same as Gameday...
someone needs to figure out if they are the same or not.
"No nuts, no glory"
I don't know if there the same
but they almost certainly use some of the same components
I usually follow along on Gameday
When they show the pitch tracker on TV the pitch locations are identical to the Gameday pitches. They use the same raw data.

This, I have also seen discrepencies.
It seems like enough technology could be shared they could both have issues at the same time without being the same.
it's the same system
the tracker that feeds to the broadcast also feeds to mlb.com. at least that’s how it used to be
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Also of note is the in-stadium gun was not working, so apparently that uses pitch f/x too

Just because it is something that
I was taught or believe does not make it right, and I wasn’t bashing Neffy for it just trying to make a statement that if it was me I would prefer to see a breaking ball in the dirt and not a third straight fastball, are you just trying to make me say something negative about Feliz?
by blueballlefty on Aug 23, 2010 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm not trying to make you say anything, guy.
I’m just trying to figure out why you’re still posting about this.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 23, 2010 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't even get this
he pitched it out of the strike zone. What more can he do? throw the ball in the dirt?
Just throw a wild pitch, maybe.
Sure, it would allow the runner to go to second, but hey! it’d be a 1-2 count, then, and someone’s probably taught somebody that hits might be allowed to happen on those counts.
by Josh Garoon on Aug 23, 2010 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions
There is a school of thought that says...
…you don’t throw the pitch anywhere close to the strike zone on 0-2. The idea being, maybe the batter will swing and strike out, but if he doesn’t, you’re still up 1-2.
To me, this is too much like doing the crazy hard first serve in tennis, because once there was a hurricane and it blew the ball so hard it went in, and so you keep doing it because of that 1 in a 100 chance it goes in, and even if it doesn’t, you have your second serve.
I’ve never understood that mindset, although it is very “old school,” sort of like the idea that, if you are batting and the runner is trying to steal, you should wildly swing and miss at the pitch to distract the catcher.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 23, 2010 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions
And hey! do the same on 1-2, right, because you're still at 2-2.
The idea of wasting a pitch just to waste a pitch has always made me scratch my head. It’s one thing if you’ve got a guy like Hamilton up, and he’s known to chase breaking stuff low and away, and you have good breaking stuff that you can throw low and away.
It’s another thing altogether if you’re Neftali Feliz facing Joe Mauer.

OK, his second pitch
I believe is a slider. So against Mauer what do you do if you are Feliz? Do you take a chance of hanging a slider, or do you try to throw a fastball off the plate. If Feliz is a power pitcher, so his fastball wasn’t far enough off the plate. But probably Mauer is the only one who hits that pitch on the Twins roster. The Rangers win, we get an exciting game. Why blame Feliz for not quite throwing a fastball far enough off the plate that almost nobody handles?

Not over yet, thankfully.
Philkid alluded to some PECOTA projections last night that had us beating the Twins by 2 games. Take it for what it’s worth. Seems odd in light of the upcoming schedules, but tonight’s win should give us some hope.
Think about it this way.
The Rangers were projected to finish 4 games behind the Twins before tonight in the unadjusted playoff odds. But that’s looking at the Rangers pitching staff having someone who’s Cliff Lee sometimes and Harden/Harrison/Feldman the rest of the time. That will mostly be Cliff Lee going forward. It’s looking at second base being part Blanco/Arias and part Kinsler, while PECOTA sees them as separate and thinks Kinsler will come back and play the rest of the way. And it’s a similar story for Cruz.
The Twins will get Morneau back, but the difference between him and more playing time for Thome or Cuddyer is pretty small compared to what’s happened to the Rangers.
So, basically, the unadjusted odds see the Rangers being a couple games worse than the Twins going forward because it doesn’t look at how rosters change. PECOTA is attempting to, and it thinks the Rangers will play a couple games better going forward.
Either way, it’s pretty close, though. Nothing anyone should bet money on one way or the other. The adjusted playoff odds just instill some confidence.

I think there have only been like three defensive backs who have played their career post rules change to get in.
It’s pathetic. I know quantifying football is really hard and so appreciating defensive backs compared to skill position players is tough, but it’s like they don’t even try. When the numbers are that disparate I would think you could realize something is probably wrong and try to correct it.

It was pretty much exactly the situation we had last week with Slowey
Right decision, both times.
To be honest...
Harden didn’t look that good. Way too many three ball counts and walks. Still needs to throw more strikes overall.
"No nuts, no glory"
It was a marked improvement though.
Something we needed to see from Rich. He’s just gotta keep it going.
"What IS your fascination with my forbidden closet of mystery?"
It was vintage Rich Harden (for you Orton fans out there)
Little to no hits, too many walks, too many pitches, but a nice amount of strikeouts and an overall good start. This start makes me a bit more confident in what he’ll do going forward than if he had another start like he did against the Angels. This is the Rich Harden we were expecting for the most part.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Slightly related
Will Carroll doesn’t seem like a great guy to follow anymore. And I know someone who worked with him that thought he was a douche but that guy was also a douche so I never thought much of it.
But Will Carroll’s tweets from today make him seem like a guy I would never talk to in real life. And I really don’t care about his injury updates unless he’s talking about a Ranger

Has he even pitched at Texas against the A’s this season?

I think it's more impressive to strike out 9, walk none, and give up 2 hits
when you’re Rich Harden. No doubt in my mind that his stuff, command, and overall performance were better in Oakland.

he needs to make the postseason roster to do that
and he has one start to go. it’s not out of the realm to think that if he toes out next time, he could be put on waivers or such. Nolan/JD/Wash hasn’t tolerated it with others, not a good time to tolerate it now.
