Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

3rd weekend of EPL games then the Int'l break. Transfer window closing tight, too. Hope City finally signs somebody before the deadline.

The League Cup comes into the picture for lots of our teams - per Wiki -
The draw for the Third Round will take place on 28 August 2010, after the Second Round games had been played. The matches played in the week beginning 20 September 2010.

The CL Group Stage draw is near -
26 August at 18.00CET [noon in DFW?], Monaco - Ten play-off winners join the 22 automatic entrants in the group-stage draw at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco, with the 32 sides split into four seeding pots and one from each drawn into the eight groups. Seeds are based on UEFA's coefficient system and no team can meet another from the same association.

And some of us [single tear on my cheek] will pay attention to the Europa Group Stage draw -
27 August at 13.00CET [7am in DFW?], Monaco - The 37 play-off winners are joined by holders Club Atlético de Madrid and the ten losing teams from the UEFA Champions League play-offs to make up the 48 clubs that go into the group-stage draw at the Grimaldi Forum.

The 48 sides are split into four seeding pots based on UEFA's coefficient system, with one from each drawn into the 12 groups. No team can meet another from the same association. Once the draw has been completed a computer draw will determine the final position of the sides within their group and therefore the order of the home and away matches.

I wonder how many of our players get run over by a stewardess pushing a drinks trolley during this Int'l window.

CL

Since Liverpool’s not in the competition this year, I’ll be rooting for Lyon.

by RCCook on Aug 24, 2010 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Speaking of Real - I'm watching their last friendly ...

The front six is – Sami behind Canales and Alonzo – with Ozil and Ronaldo swapping wings back and forth around Higuain. Ozil looks a half beat slow understanding his teammates, but he doesn’t look overmatched or anything. The interesting thing tho’, to me anyway, is that Sergio Ramos, who I hate with a passion, is at CD next to Carvalho instead of hogging the ball out at a right wingback. This makes Real sooooo much more pleasant to watch. Real has lots of CD injury woes so Jose is trying out stopgap ideas at CD – Gago played there the other day, for instance. I wonder how happy Ramos is playing the pure defender in the middle of the field rather than hogging the ball [I hate him soooo much] out along the right touchline. I hate him. So much. BTW, the left FB Marcello is a fun little dude to watch.

…that said iker casilla is like mo rivera to me. i hate the yankees, but like mo. i hate real but like casilla…

Still just the second-best keeper for Spain, though…

Casillas

I was sorta joking, but is there any doubt that if Reina played for Madrid, and Casillas for Liverpool, that Reina would be Spain’s #1?

by RCCook on Aug 25, 2010 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Um, I don't know

Reina’s a fine keeper, but Casillas is in a class of his own.

Yup.

Reina was better than Casillas last season.

You don't think Del Bosque would pick Iker Casillas because he's Iker Casillas?

What the fuck? Were you born yesterday on the back of a turnip truck? That’s how national teams work all the time.

by LiamP on Aug 25, 2010 2:14 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

by knockoutking on Aug 25, 2010 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Come on what?

Reina was fucking better last season. Anyone who watched either one for any extended amount of time would say the same thing.

They insisted on playing an unfit Torres for most of the tournament and it could’ve easily cost them. Think they played him because he was on form? Nope. They did it because he’s Fernando fucking Torres. People play because of their names all the damn time. Casillas is the Derek Jeter of Spain. He’s very good and so beloved that, so long as he can stand upright, he’ll be the #1 choice.

by LiamP on Aug 25, 2010 2:42 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Regardless

You don’t drop your number 1 based on a single year of play, particularly when Casillas is still obviously a class keeper. Such a move would be rash and if Reina fell on his face (or had one gaffe as bad as his OG against Arsenal) del Bosque would have been blamed, and rightly so.

Not mediocre. Right about average

by trza on Aug 25, 2010 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

This goes back to RC's point

If Reina was the #1 at Barca, instead of a massively underachieving English team that finished 7th, it would be a lot more feasible. Reina’s form last year was awesome, and in the time he’s been at Liverpool, he’s developed into a top 2 or 3 keeper.

meh, I don't know

Torres plays for Liverpool, an underachieving English squad, but he was your poster child for coasting on reputation this summer. I think it has more to do with not wanting to upset things too much before the tournament. I’m also not convinced that I’d prefer Reina over Casillas (splitting hairs really, both are excellent).

Not mediocre. Right about average

by trza on Aug 25, 2010 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions

The point with Torres is that none of that mattered, because he's Fernando Torres.

The point that I’m agreeing with is that, if their pedigrees were equal (or reversed as in RC’s scenario), there’s no way you would’ve picked Casillas over Reina going into that tournament. Last season, Casillas had, by his standards, a bad season. Reina on the other hand, was awesome.

I understand that Casillas was never going to be dropped. He’s the youngest ever GK for Real, youngest for Spain and most importantly, he’s the captain of that team.

They can’t be this bad. Can they? They looked very good in the first half against Bolton and then fell to pieces. They have dug themselves a bit of a hole to start the season, but I just can’t see them getting relegated. Grant’s a good coach. Not sure about the decision to sell Diamanti though.

Groups for English teams are mainly boring

Arsenal and Chelsea should go through easily but have some beastly travel to do. United get Valencia and I’m really looking forward to that.

Shroom’s Real get the easiest team from Pot A but the most difficult group overall.

Real’s group should be interesting- Auxerre and Ajax aren’t pushovers. Spurs have a fairly tough group- the defending champs plus two solid clubs in Bremen and FC Twente.

I’m pretty happy with Lyon’s group- Benfica and Schalke will be challenging, but they should roll over Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Less than we paid for him

Seems it doesn’t matter who the manager is, our board always finds a way to screw the club on transfer deals.

But at least Hodgson can finally buy some players- come on down, Paul Konchesky and Carlton Cole! Yay!

I’m so totally stoked for this season now! Thanks, Hicks!

Seriously, though, that doesn’t look a good figure considering how they probably would’ve liked to get into the mid-20s…

Yep

Seeing as we paid 17 for him, and since coming to us, he’s become one of the best destroyer midfielders in the world and captain of Argentina, yeah, I was hoping we’d get more than 15-20 when we sold him.

Looks like Konchesky’s our new LB- heard today that a deal was close, for around 3-4 million. Hodgson reportedly has four targets for a midfield signing- Gokhan Inler, Gary Medel, Scott Parker, and Steven Defour, who would be my first choice.

by RCCook on Aug 27, 2010 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

CM signing

Well, looks like we may already have a replacement- the Guardian is reporting Liverpool has agreed a deal with Porto for Raul Meireles. That’s actually better than I was expecting…

by RCCook on Aug 27, 2010 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

That's our board!

Leave it to whoever’s running our transfers to pull off a coup like that!

The deal for Meireles has been confirmed- 10.7 million. I’d still like to add Defour and a striker; hopefully Hodgson has actually been given some money to work with…

This weekend's EPL fixtures: peeeee - yoooooooo - they stink.

Arsenal at Blackburn is sorta interesting but not enough to get up at 6:30am. The rest of sat morning sux. Sunday has Everton at Villa – two sputtering teams looking to find their stride. But I won’t watch it because it’s oppo the City game, which looks like a classic City stumbling block if we don’t bear down and match their physicality. Yuk – kind of an unpleasant way to launch into 2 weeks worth of int’l break finger-twirling.

by shroomer on Aug 27, 2010 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Blackburn-Arsenal

You should watch this just so you can see Benjani unveiled as Rovers’ strike pairing to Mame Diouf. Will be interesting to see what one still has in the tank and what the other can do against a legit Premier League side. The alternative if Benjani doesn’t get the start is Gamst Pedersen up top. Some times I just don’t know if BFS is just taking the piss

Also I’ve already written out Wenger’s post-game comments. It’ll go something like this…"Well they do not come to play football, just to play rugby. This is not the football I know, this tackling and fouling business. The football I know is played in starched white shorts that never get dirty. "

Scholes is my favorite player of my generation.

I started following United a year before he broke into the squad. When he and Giggs retire, it will basically be the last time I see players that I’ve been watching since I was a boy.

This is what Jon’s talking about

I’m fond of his goals against Villa and Bradford.

by LiamP on Aug 29, 2010 1:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Adding one more.

Scholes has freely admitted that he doesn’t strike a dead ball very well, which is why he doesn’t take any FK’s. However, he was United’s penalty taker for about a year in the early 2000’s (before Ruud). Watch 2:36 of this video for what I still think is one of the most hilarious penalties I’ve ever seen.

by LiamP on Aug 29, 2010 1:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Adam Johnson worships Giggs - studies him all the time.

The other guy he watches is Robben – trying to pick up some left-footed right-winger chops off him – cut back style. I guess AJ will be forced to play left wing for England lots – good chance to hone his game over there, too.

BTW, here’s a short video of Bellamy’s FK goal for Cardiff last week - great camera angle

by shroomer on Aug 29, 2010 1:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Not surprising.

I imagine most British wingers currently their late teens or early twenties grew up sort of idolizing Giggs.

by LiamP on Aug 29, 2010 1:48 AM CDT up reply actions

I like Jack Wilshere

He’s a little firecracker.

This sounds a little homeristic, but watching Walcott right now reminds me a little of the tournament in Happy Gilmore after Happy works with Chubs, when Happy says to Shooter, “Happy learned how to put – uh oh!” Last week it was Blackpool, so who knows. But he looked like someone again today whose brain wasn’t going 200 mph as he tried to decide what to do on the last ball. He’s going to be a major pain in the ass if that continues.

Also, on Arsenal, whether it’s Schwartzer or Almunia, between the keeper and central defense they just aren’t strong enough to challenge. I like Koscielny as a footballer, he’s scrappy, and they can put some decent size in Diaby, Song and Chamakh out there to help on set pieces, but he’s just not strong enough. On the goal they conceded today he didn’t have proper support, but Diouf B just sort of said ‘sorry, I’m going to keep this’ as he just shrugged him off breaking down the left. Squillaci may be a nice addition, but the Almunia-Gallas-Vermaelen troika was pretty woefully lacking last season all things considered, and all you’ve done in adding Squillaci is replace Gallas with the guy who could never beat him out for France (not that you can really trust the guy making the selections).

I don’t like that their two strikers aren’t pure goal scorers, but from the group of Fabregas, Arshavin, Van Persie, Walcott, Chamakh, Nasri, etc. they may have enough offense to challenge. Song is a solid, growing player, and with Gibbs developing they have their best set of fullbacks since Cole left. But they just aren’t going to be able to cover up that mess surrounding Vermaelen with what Wenger came up with this summer.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 29, 2010 2:49 AM CDT reply actions

Song

I was impressed by Song on Saturday. He looks to be a strong deft player in the middle. As for the defense as a whole, I did find that they were getting exposed a bit more than I’d have expected. El Hadj was putting them under a lot of pressure and his little stop, sprint & turn maneuver was working all day despite him ALWAYS doing that.

And I hope Arsene was happy that there were hardly any yellow cards, and frankly hardly any need for them

What's the rumpus?

I'm sure that Wenger feels like

his little preemptive complaint had a lot to do with the relatively tame game.

What would it take for Chelsea to not run away with the title this year?

Seems pretty inevitable. Man Utd can maintain better health, but they seem more likely to have the little slip-ups this time around. Chelsea has so many guys in good form and just look like a steamroller. Oh and suck it Shawcross, Pulis and Stoke. Enjoy playing Scunthorpe and Watford next season.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 29, 2010 3:01 AM CDT reply actions

Sounds about right

I’m not sure they run away with it, but I think they’re the favorites by a reasonable margin.

Also, an Ashley Cole injury would be pretty devastating, considering the width he provides and their injuries on the back line.

I thought for a minute that Abramovic had somehow figured out a way to combine their DNA into one superplayer. Granted, that player would flop like crazy when he’s not trying to break your legs, but he’ll also score 30 a year!

LB Kieran Richardson shut down his side of the field defensively for Sun and Lescott’s ineptness shut down his side of the field offensively for City. Left the middle clogged up and the ball blowing around in the air on a windy day. Tevez missed a sitter. Adebayour had a goal stolen by a reflex save. Mancini lost his cool on the sideline which just feuled the home crowd frenzy and Sunderland players. And like I always say – Richards is a just PK waiting to happen. Bah – what a waste of the Spurs’ defeat.

Everton

They started slow last year as well, but one point in three games has to be a pretty big disappointment, considering that they have kept Jagielka, Rodwell, Pienaar and Arteta, added Beckford early, and they don’t seem like they should be as unsettled as last year with Lescott. Aston Villa and Blackburn are going to be coin flips for them, but they haven’t played any of Chelsea, Man Utd/City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and they’re already fighting up from the relegation zone.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 29, 2010 1:47 PM CDT reply actions

Beckford.

I still don’t understand the point of that. They started him over Saha today which boggles the mind.

Ya

Its funny how the game completely turned around once Saha got into the game and Everton started pushing. I really wish Moyes would go more to an attacking form because this 4-4-1-1 is just not getting it done.

shroom's Real Report! - it's more than you runts deserve!

0-0 draw with Real dominating 64% of possession

Canales is really young to be playing such an important role on the team. Guess he’s filling in until Kaka gets back. It’ll be great for his devo, but it ain’t gonna win Jose many games this season.

Ozil replaced Canales, sort of – hit a decent pass or two but didn’t do much better.

Their attack was very left-handed, with Ronaldo and Marcelo doing the grunt work along the line. Without Ramos hogging the ball over on the right they’re sorta lopsided – not much happens up the right touchline. Overall, the best chances they had usually were a result of Ronaldo – mostly just speed down the side and zipping the ball into the center.

DiMaria, IMO, is best on the LW, but Ronaldo spends the lion’s share of his time over there, so DiMaria is sorta weakened by this displacement.

Higuain doesn’t really look for his teammates much – he might be a little too occupied with the net sometimes. Needs to give a target or play a 1-2 pass more often.

Sami seems better than Lass, don’t know why Jose didn’t start him at CDM instead.

Xabi just seems lonely out there – like a tika without a taka. Maybe he can go to Arsenal when Cesc leaves and plunge himself into Arsene’s version of small ball.

Jose seemed more like an observer than a director during the game. I’m not sure he’s got a grip on the team yet. Between Sneijder’s comments and some of Jose’s own comments here recently, it doesn’t take a genius to see that he wants to replace Fergie at ManU when the old fart quits. This seems pretty awkward to me. He just started a years-long project that cost Real 100M euros [IIRC] in coaching acquisition fees to launch. Fergie can’t last much longer. Seems a little weird to me. Overall, between the Spanish entitlement to demand pretty soccer coupled with the limits Ronaldo’s temperament puts on his coaching expression, it seems to me that Jose is not the master of his own domain. Not sure he’s gonna be able to use all the tools in his shed on this job. Which again makes me feel like he’s got one foot out the door already headed to ManU.

by shroomer on Aug 29, 2010 11:20 PM CDT reply actions

Funny to see Real already chasing Barca after 1 round of games.

Re: Mourinho to United, I’ve been convinced for a while that that’s the job he’s targeting. It’s a massive catch-22 that’s perfect for someone with Mourinho’s ego…you get to go to United, but you have to follow the most the most successful, longest tenured and most identifiable manager in the modern era.

It would make sense but for one thing: The guy hops around too much. I would think SAF, who will have a massive say in who his successor will be, would want to pick someone who’d be capable (results willing) of being as inextricable as he was.

by knockoutking on Aug 30, 2010 10:30 AM CDT reply actions

as a longtime Milan fan, this is both encouraging and frustrating

Apart from signing Thiago Silva and brining in Boateng on loan from Genoa, our biggest transfers have mostly been comprised of Madrid/Barcelona cast-offs (Huntelaar, Ibra, Fat Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, etc.). While Ronaldinho has started paying off more in the last year, I am torn between wanting Milan to be competitive (and sign the likes of Ibra and Robinho) and start signing more youngsters and taking their lumps for a year or two. Pato and Thiago Silva have worked out wonderfully, and I am disappointed to see Alberto Paloschi loaned out to Parma year after year. Paloschi could do as well if not better than Boriello given some time to click with the rest of the team. Watching Boriello against Lecce was not pleasant, and while Ibra will give us a boost in that department, I want to see us develop more young players.

A Pato/Paloschi front line would be plain fun to watch—particularly if we get a young playmaker behind them (Giuseppe Rossi?). That would be a trio that could grow together and win together. But sure…Ibra and Robinho…why the hell not play for 2nd/3rd place every year.

by naropean on Aug 30, 2010 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Goddamnit, iPhone.

I don’t think there was much of a choice. With Ibra and a healthy Pato, you’re real contenders for the Scudetto.

Also, I don’t know much about the Italian game, but I don’t think there’s a real chance for youth guys at the bigger clubs. That’s something that Kiko Macheda talked about when the papers were interviewing him about Balotelli’s transfer.

by LiamP on Aug 30, 2010 12:15 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

That's my assertion

Ibra at that price is something you just do because Borriello or Inzaghi is just not the answer.. Depending upon what Robinho’s price is, I think he’d be fantastic in that set-up as well. Pirlo and Ronaldinho’s incisive passes over the top suit Pato and would suit Robinho as well.

Although I do agree with naropean above that Milan usually farms their youngsters out for way too long and then just lets them go, all the while playing guys like Jankulovski, Oddo, Inzaghi and Ambrosini. blah

What's the rumpus?

My favorite one of the day so far- Soccernet’s Harry Harris posts a story that Spurs had agreed a deal with Liverpool for Ryan Babel- complete with rumors that he was on his way to London via helicopter to sign.

About 10 minutes after the story posted, Babel tweets “I’m not going anywhere- LFC- YNWA!!!”

Not that I should have expected any differently- Harry Harris’ “exclusives” on Liverpool are about as accurate as Stevie Wonder on an archery range.

Tidy little piece of business for Man City
Robinho cost City £32 million when signing for the club in a shock move from Real Madrid in 2008 but it is reported that they have recouped an initial payment in the region of £12.5 million.

I guess the total sum could be for a fair amount more.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 31, 2010 11:36 AM CDT reply actions

Well

Window’s closed. Good to know Hicks kept his word from this article back in January:

“In an e-mail of his own to a fan, he intimated that Liverpool’s debt — in excess of £200 million — is more manageable than that of their great rivals.

He also insisted that while Liverpool will not be splashing out in the present transfer window, they are already planning to invest heavily in the summer to bolster Rafael Benítez’s squad, and claimed the long-awaited new stadium will be delivered.

"Our debt is very manageable (see Man U) and we never use player sales for debt service," Hicks Sr wrote in the e-mail, responding to concerns from a supporter that Liverpool will not be big spenders in January.

"Our interest on £200 million is about £16 million. The new stadium will be the game changer. January is a poor quality market. The summer window will be big."

Fourth straight transfer window where we’ve turned a profit, and no new stadium anywhere in sight! Hell of a job, Tom!

Hicks

A couple folks on RAWK did a detailed analysis of the ins and outs of the club’s transfers going back the past four windows- basically starting with the sale of Keane back to Spurs.

Since that time, LFC has received almost 50 million pounds more in transfer sales than they’ve spent.

But no, there’s no financial crisis, everything is A-OK, and glory days are just around the corner! All we needed was a good Englishman like Roy and some good English players like Konchesky, and the trophies are going to roll in!

I pray to whatever god will listen, please give me a large blunt instrument, and 15 minutes alone with Hicks. Hell, I’d even take Gillett or Purslow if that’s all I can get.

Milner's looked fine. It's RW where AJ would look pretty nifty.

Walcott’s in form and all, but AJ shoulda at least started the 2nd half.

I almost commented on how great the Wembley pitch was playing when Dawson got hurt. Hope the new surface doesn’t get the blame.

They could take Barry off, move Milner into the middle and put AJ in.

Cap-fart-O

Adam comes in and misses a long bender on the break and the camera shows Cap going apeshit on the bench. I wonder if he was going apeshit when Walcott was spraying all those balls and lacking the savvy and understanding of his teammates’ movement while he was on the field? I freakin’ hate Cap-fart-O.

by shroomer on Sep 3, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

He got the ball alot. He's fast and defenders back off him.

But he didn’t do anything with it. Maybe one nice pass where the Bulgarian keeper dove into a crowd at the front post and came up big. Johnson just woulda done so much more with the same amount of touches. And yes, I’m massively biased towards AJ. I don’t hate Walcott, but I do hate Cap-fart-O.

by shroomer on Sep 3, 2010 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Milner's better off playing in the middle with Barry.

Johnson’s obviously the future on the left and he’s been in fine form. Totally pointless to not play him.

More Time-Warner good/bad

The good: they have added GOLTV to the HD tier and in English, so that’s pretty awesome. Also, not soccer related, but as a part of their new Disney agreement, they added a college football/basketball HD channel that sounds similar to NFL Red Zone (which, of course, they don’t carry). It’s 798 here.

The bad: they got ESPN3.com added to their new agreement, but between them and ESPN they haven’t managed to give TWC customers access yet. I am guessing that it has to do with setting up the login interface and related data, but TWC supposedly doesn’t know why it’s not up and running yet. They have all of the qualifiers on there today, so it’s too bad that they don’t have it.
