Arias gone, according to TR

Called up Alex Cora.

Are you serious? Did that really happen? What's today? I feel like I'm being lied to.

Wonderful news

I still don’t know what Arias brought to the table.

Am I misremembering

Or were there reports that the Rangers could have had Cano instead of Arias in that trade?

by LoneStarBallUser on Aug 24, 2010 9:06 PM CDT reply actions

Yes. Cano was on the same list as Arias during the A-rod trade.

Arias was picked because he was older, supposedly faster, and more toolsey than Cano.

Baseball America Story

baseball sources say the five-man list contains four hitters, including outfielder Rudy Guillen, shortstop Joaquin Arias and second baseman Robinson Cano, as well as righthander Ramon Ramirez. Here’s a synopsis of those four players, all of whom signed out of the Dominican Republic and ranked Nos. 3-6 on our Yankees Top 10 Prospects list:

Guillen, age 20 (No. 3): Signed for $100,000 in 2000, Guillen is the best athlete in the Yankees system. He’s a five-tool center fielder with raw power, plus speed and a strong arm. He hit .260/.311/.414 with 13 homers, 79 RBIs and 13 steals in 133 games at low Class A Battle Creek in 2003. His plate discipline (32 walks, 87 strikeouts) is his biggest weakness.

Arias, age 19 (No. 4): Arias received a $300,000 bonus in 2001. Known as “Spiderman” because his arms and legs appear to be going in different directions at once, he nonetheless has good body control and is both the fastest baserunner and best defensive infielder in the system. He also has a quick bat and promising raw power, though he needs to draw more walks. He hit .266/.306/.343 with three homers, 48 RBIs and 12 steals in 130 games at Battle Creek last year.

Ramirez, age 22 (No. 5): Originally signed by the Rangers as an outfielder in 1996, Ramirez was released by Texas in 1998. He signed with the Hiroshima Carp in 2002 but pitched just three innings in the Japanese majors. After he impressed the Yankees in winter ball after that season, they outbid the Phillies for his rights. They paid $350,000 to the Carp and $175,000 to Ramirez. He has the best breaking ball in the New York system, a power curveball, along with a 92-95 mph fastball. He pitched in 20 games (18 starts) last year between high Class A Tampa, Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Columbus, going 3-10, 4.43. In 102 innings he had a 96-29 strikeout-walk ratio and a .275 opponent average. He led the Arizona Fall League with a 1.44 ERA.

Cano, age 21 (No. 6): Cano is one of the better hitters in the Yankees system, with a smooth stroke, plus bat speed and natural strength that should lead to lots of power once he adds loft to his swing. As he has filled out, he has lost some quickness, which may prompt a move from second to third base. He also could use some more plate discipline. Cano hit .277/.321/.374 with six homers and 63 RBIs in 136 games between Tampa and Trenton last year.

Our baseball sources confirmed that catcher Dioner Navarro, the Yankees’ top prospect, is not included on the five-player list.

February 17 update: The Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram has reported and Baseball America has confirmed that third baseman Bronson Sardinha is the fourth hitter on the list. Additionally, the pitcher is now believed to be righthander Jose Valdez rather than Ramirez. The scouting reports on Sardinha and Valdez:

Sardinha, age 20 (No. 10): A supplemental first-round pick in 2001 out of a Hawaii high school, Sardinha has two brothers playing pro ball—Dane with the Reds and Duke with the Rockies. Sardinha is a pure line-drive hitter with power potential, though in each of the previous two years he struggled to hit before getting demoted. Last season, he hit .239/.333/.353 with nine homers, 58 RBIs and 13 steals in 130 games between Tampa and Battle Creek. Drafted as a shortstop, Sardinha moved to the outfield and now has settled at third base.

Jose Valdez, age 20 (No. 21): Another product of the Yankees’ Dominican program, Valdez signed in 2000. He has a 90-94 mph fastball and a good feel for a splitter, but doesn’t have much of a breaking ball or changeup. His future may be in relief, where he could pitch in the mid-90s. He went 12-8, 3.68 in 25 starts at Battle Creek and Tampa in 2003, with an 85-46 K-BB ratio and .253 opponent average in 149 innings.

Serenity now, insanity later.

Interesting

That this thing mentions Dioner Navarro was the Yanks top prospect at the time.

That didn’t exactly work out either.

all the articles where it seemed like Ranger insiders were slapping each other on the back for finding Arias who the Yankees were “hiding” from other teams.

Glad hes gone

But it still amazes me how much hate he inspires given how little he actually played. 9 starts since the end of April. Sure we could have had someone better but how much difference would it have really made if they only got 9 starts in the last 4 months

by bigsteve on Aug 24, 2010 9:36 PM CDT reply actions

Its not just Arias

It’s the fact that he’s been on the roster this whole season despite the fact that have had holes in our roster (right-handed bench bat).

yep

having 2 utility infielders, one of whom couldn’t field, throw or hit, instead of a guy who could hit lefties was just bad roster construction.

Look heres my deal

The Rangers were obviously comcerned with Kinslers health, and rightfully so as it turned out, so they wanted to keep an extra UIF type around. You don’t want Arias…fine. Who do you replace him with? Esteban German? Gregorio Petit? Alex Cora? Hernan Irabarran? Do any of those guys get any more playing time than what Arias got after May 1st? Very doubtful. Do any of those players make us any better record wise? Maybe a game, two at most. So all this hate and ire being thrown at Arias is over what….1 or 2 wins in the win column when we have a 7+ game lead? If we were in a close race then sure his fuckups would be magnified. But there was simply no reason for everyone to be so pissed about him staying on the roster this long. And now that hes gone its not like we are going to suddenly become that much better.

And as for the needing a lefty hitter I disagree. The way Murphy has played this year makes needing a lefty killer less meaninful. Murphy is batting 280 with a 340 OBP against LHP which is just fine. We had our lefty masher on our bench earlier this year in Ryan Garko and we all saw how that worked out. our roster has done just fine against RHP and LHP.

There's always a hate magnet on this team

Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn’t. I first remember many a hate session on the NMLR where people wanted Sandy Alomar drawn and quartered, and he had a pretty decent season as a backup C here but could do nothing right in some folks’ eyes.

Is he really "gone"?

If he goes unclaimed, can’t he accept an assignment to the minors? And then come back up when rosters expand?

I hope he’s gone for good. But Jason Voorhees, Fred Krueger, and Joaquin Arias don’t go away without a fight.

No

Hes off the 40 man roster which means unless they put him back on the 40 man roster he can’t come up in September.

This 40 spot will either be used on McCarthy when he returns from his rehab stint and placed back on the 40 or Scheppers.

You only need one UIF...

Blanco will work fine for 3B/SS/2B.

The Rangers will probably look for an external option at 1B and then they will have Moreland to back up there as well.

As long as there is a decent option stashed at OKC I agree.

With Kinsler’s knack for injuries and the need to rest the other guys every once in a while, one UIF won’t be enough for the whole season.

considering

the team has either a 3 or 4 man bench at times, having 2 UIFs is just flat silly, especially when one of them is no better than a waiver wire pickup anyway.

If Kinsler is going to continue to miss half a season

Then you need multiple UIF options available to you. If you don’t have anyone in OKC on options then you almost have to keep 2 on your active roster. You can’t keep making 40 man moves for backups for a few weeks.

Hopefully in the next couple years we will have someone like a Marcus Lemon or someone we can stash on the 40 under options down in OKC so that if Kinsler goes down for a week or two we can option someone up and down at will.

As it stands looking back I really don’t have much problem with keeping Arias, or whichever UIF type would have replaced him, on the 25 man all season

by bigsteve on Aug 25, 2010 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions

No, you really don't

especially when an option is as bad as Arias. You can pretty much always get his equivalent off the waiver wire or for cash considerations.

Players who can’t field, throw or hit are fairly easy to come by.

by LSJ on Aug 25, 2010 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions

You can't keep making roster moves like that though for only a couple weeks worth of play

This years problem wasn’t keeping two UIF types on the roster it was both had to be on the 25 man since they were both out of options.

If Arias had options left he would have spent the majority of the season in OKC.

Until Kinsler can put together a full season without injury we are going to need multiple guys readily available to us.

by bigsteve on Aug 25, 2010 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Since Arias is

a below replacement level player, wasting a roster spot to keep him up was just silly.

And yes, you can run players like that through waivers whenever you need to, because you can find below replacement level players like Arias quite easily.

who out there was a free agent ready to be had by anyone this year?

Not many people. And whoever it is isn’t going to be much, if any, kind of an upgrade over Arias.

Im not upset Arias is gone frankly I could care less. it just amazes me how people seem to think we held onto him when we could have had some kind of silver slugger instead. If it wasn’t Arias sucking on this team this year it would have been someone else equally as sucky. Would you have hated that person the same as you hated Arias?
