AJM: If you could only acquire one, would you rather have Lee or Beltre?
Well then... I would like to see this Jeff Sullivan pornagraphy.

... really?
gotta go with Lee. He’s got a proven track record of pitching well. Beltre only plays well in contract years.
Rangers FTW
Except for last year, which was also a contract year for Beltre
But I agree, give me Lee

Beltre
Evan has it wrong on Beltre.
He was an above-average offensive player in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.
He has had three free agent seasons, 2004, 2009 and 2010.
So he’s had a free agent season in which he wasn’t an above-average offensive player, and he’s been an above-average offensive player in his last three non-free agent seasons.

Seattle's park
People underestimate Beltre’s offense while he was there. He was very good in 2006-08. Many also have a misguided idea of what is above average offense for a 3B.

That depends
on what they plan to do with Face. if it moves face to, say, first base, then I think I’d rather have Beltre.
Mal: Well, quite a lot of fuss. If I didn't know better, I'd think we were dangerous.
depends on the dollars and years
but Lee, of course.

good stuff
though i don’t know if i’d blame hicks for those other bad signings after the arod contract. put that on hart.
post fail... I hate posting from my phone.
But here’s the question… If you had a choice between signing one of AGon, Crawford, or Lee, who do you choose and why?
by e2drummer on Aug 27, 2010 11:43 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
If you sign Crawford
Who would you then trade, Cruz or Hammy?

So you want Hammy in CF fulltime for the next how many years?
"I support you, Wash; I’ve always supported you," Young said
"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
I think it's more that Crawford would play CF
He’s got the skill set, he’s just been used in LF for the Rays.
'06 in CF: -0.1 UZR -28.6 UZR/150
’08: -0.6 -15.0
I don’t think he would be worth a damn in CF.

There's a good reason he's in LF

He played 2 games in CF in '06 (only 1 as a starter), and 1 in '08.
Those UZR numbers are coming from only 2 plays in each year.
By contrast, in ‘05 he made 17 plays in 8 games in CF, and had a 6.7 UZR/150 (still a crazy small sample). And for his career he’s got a 9.2 UZR/150 in CF.
Maybe he can’t play CF anymore, maybe the Rays’ coaches know he doesn’t have the range anymore, but he hasn’t tried it enough recently for the stats to mean anything.
Fair enough
"I support you, Wash; I’ve always supported you," Young said
"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
He only has 54 games total in CF, though
I wouldn’t rely on that.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
and the year he had the most games, 2004, with 30 games played there
he had his best year with a 17.1 UZR/150.
The 2 years you cited he played 2 games, and 1 in CF.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
I'm actually pretty intrigued by a Hamilton-Crawford-Cruz outfield
going left to right. All three of those guys can run, gappers would die.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
Not gonna happen
jasoncollette @Kinslerhomer he has the tools to play it but he has never wanted to play it and has not been happy when asked to in the past

Yeah, I don't see the Rangers as seriously pursuing him anyway
I think Lee is the only guy they’ll consider spending that kind of money on this winter.

Crawford
I think he has a chance to be overpaid for the next six or seven years.

Still think Crawford is going to be pursued hard....
In the AL East. Yankees might overprice him and overpay him
At least I hope

Ignoring everything off the field
And just focusing on what happens in between the lines I think trading Josh after this season would be a smart baseball move. His value would never be higher, trade him for a cheap young proven catcher and a couple solid prospects. Then you sign Crawford and Beltre, move Young to DH and sign someone to back up Moreland if he can’t handle 1B full time. Then you can flip some of your Josh prospects into a solid starter to bolster the rotation a bit (assuming you can’t get Lee to resign) and the team should be good to go. Obviously none of this will happen because of the business side of baseball (and I don’t think it should happen, it’d be bad for the franchise) but I definitely think we could make the team better with an out of the box move like that.
my better is better than your better.
by rangerjake on Aug 27, 2010 1:43 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Well....
Not sure who the cheap young proven catcher would be, and the additions of Crawford, Beltre and the solid starter would cost a lot more than Hamilton will make next season.
Crawford alone would cost more than Hamilton next year.
by Darrell McKown on Aug 27, 2010 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah true it would be a little more expensive
But I think it definitely makes the team better. Are there any free agent catchers worth spending some cash on? If Lee doesn’t resign I wouldn’t mind ponying up some dough to settle the catching situation. That and first base are the only spots I see as weaknesses with this team going forward.
my better is better than your better.
by rangerjake on Aug 27, 2010 2:29 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
That would be my choice too
because it has the least downside and fills a significant hole. Crawford won’t play CF which would force Hammy to play the position and Lee is going to be in his late 30s at the end of his contract while making $20+ M. AGon would be a monster addition to the team.
Not that I think they will attempt to sign anyone other than Lee.
AGon
He would cost you a high price in players, plus having to extend him.

Adrian Beltre
ugh…
Why is this even being brought up? Obviously Beltre>Young; but this team is simply not going to move Young again, especially after a playoff year.
Go Rice Owls!
Young sucks
If you watch his body language after he blows a play, he knows he sucks at third. He may not piss and moan about a move to first base this time around.
by Black Francis on Aug 27, 2010 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions
if Young were to initiate the move
then yeah, I can see it happening.
But that is the factor here. Nolan isn’t going to suddenly move Young again against his will. Now, LSB can whine, complain, mope, etc about whether Young should be upset about it. But that is just the reality of the situation.
But you’re right – Young may voluntarily move to 1st in order to mitigate his awful range, as well as fill that hole.
Go Rice Owls!
JD isn't afraid to make the moves he feels are best for the team. He has proven it many times.
If moving Young is best for the team, JD would have that convo.
"Ooooh....I want some fucking pancakes!" son of willamos2
You say "whine, complain, mope, etc."
but the fact of the matter is, Michael Young doesn’t decide where he plays, the Rangers do.
If anything, you’re “ugh” sounded closer to whining than anything I’ve seen from people who would want Beltre here.
by ghostofErikThompson on Aug 27, 2010 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Why are you ugh-ing though?
If they could get Beltre they absolutely should move Young.

MY becoming our DH doesn't get me that excited......
but him filling in as the UIF makes me very interested despite his salary. We could have another guy (Vlad maybe) be a 2nd DH as well as a backup OF.
MY playing a couple times a week in the field would keep him from crying too much…..maybe.
our year??
i understand the hate for his fielding
he seems to have been getting worse there, but really? moving MY to a freaking utility infield spot sounds like a good idea??

that's simply a ridiculous suggestion
If he can’t field, why use him as a utility guy?
He’s a hitter; that is what he is paid for.
Go Rice Owls!
I think having MY at DH and back up for all 4
Infield spots (maybe not SS) makes some sense. Kinsler has proved he’s going to spend some time on the DL, and sucky D and all I have to think that Young filling in at second for 2 or 3 weeks, with murph (or some bat we pick up this offseason) DH-ing is better for the team than Blanco/Arias/ some scrub filling in for two weeks with Young at dh.
my better is better than your better.

While not necessarily the case....
some do come back and throw harder. It seems like the Ranger had a reliever a few years ago, I think maybe Sans, Seinz, or maybe Sanchez, who came back after surgery and was throwing about 5 mph faster than before he got injured. He didn’t stick long with the club, but for a time he was a pretty impressive reliever, at least in a positive unexpected sense.

Oh, what the hell?
How would some random “MLB front office official” know how Cliff Lee feels about pitching in Texas? Sometimes, I really get sick of the whole 24 hour news cycle that spawn crap stories like this. Let the man pitch the rest of the season in Texas, and we will see what happens in the off season. Unless Cliff comes out and says that he hates pitching in Texas, anything else is just conjecture or hearsay.

If you say something enough times it becomes true
What – does MLB send out surveys? “Do you like where you play? Check yes or no. Do you like me? Check yes or no.” The odds MLB actually gives a shit whether players are happy is less than zero. They’re mortal enemies come CBA time.
"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.
Then he grounded out weakly to second.

If you say something enough times it becomes true
This is exactly what I am afraid of. Now that two “sources” have reported the same thing, some people will believe that it must be true. Can’t everybody just let him pitch, please?

This just in...
Apparently the two Bobs were seen conducting player interviews in the conference room at the clubhouse. After strolling in late in jeans and flip-flops, Cliff Lee expressed his apathy at working here.

So the two Bobs told management to give Cliff a raise,
to fire Joaquin Arias and Christian Guzman, and to fix the glitch in the system that allowed Tom Hicks to continue receiving a paycheck.

If he truely hated pitching here...
Then why doesn’t Lee refuse to pitch? I mean, he’s still going to get a huge contract this offseason from someone. Why pitch the rest of the year then and risk injury if he doesn’t like it here?
Just more lazy reporting by these eastern reporters

Haven't even bothered to check this out, but...
Couldn’t the Rangers then place him on the reserved/suspended list, retain their rights to him for the remaining contract time, and then deal him in the offseason for at least a little something??
Pretty sure he couldn’t just sit without repercussions.
