Minors 8/27; Marteen day
Haven't had one of these in a while.
Which team do you think is the most exciting Rangers farm team?
I think the Spokane team might be the most exciting Ranges farm team (I think the AZL team is pretty exciting too). Lots of guys to keep an eye on on that team. Deglan, Olt, Profar, Chirino, Clark, Skole, Richmond, Hoying, etc.

THE Justin Thompson...
is the pitching coach for the Spokane team. How did I not know this before?

Really? Whoa
Does he throw off flat ground in between our prospects’ bullpen sessions?

"Which team do you think is the most exciting Rangers farm team?"
Really good question. It’s a tough call between Spokane and Arizona. I’d lean towards SPO simply because there are more highly-touted Latin signings and first rounders on that team and I’m familiar with more guys on that roster so I look forward to their antics more than those of the Rookies.

sorry it took so long –- got caught up in other things as I try to fit in Hickory, Arizona, and Bakersfield in the last couple weeks. Better late than never though, I guess.
Thanks Jason...
great stuff.
When you say Perez needs to mature on the mound, what is it that you feel he needs to work on? Could you expound a little more on that? Is it just experience, how he approaches hitters, control, comfort?

A little all of the above
Mostly learning how to pitch to hitters instead of just throwing and trying to blow hitters away/trying to strike everyone out.

Hey
How’s Buckel looking in Arizona? You seem to be pretty high on him.
Buckel
Tossed another scoreless inning. In his 5 innings of work so far he’s racked up 9:1 K:BB. Does anyone think there’s a chance they have him start a game or 2 before the end of the milb season?
by MonkeyEpoxy on Aug 28, 2010 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions
No
2nd season players (debuting the same year they were drafted) almost never start. There really is no point as they have nothing to prove having already accumulated a lot of inings in a full season of college or high school ball coupled with the associated increased injury risk.
Nice
scottrlucas 909 minor league pitchers with 10 or more starts. Texas’s Miguel de los Santos leads them all with 40% SO rate. Next best only 34%.

"I was going to say, 'You’re gay for Elvis.' But then I realized that I, too, am gay for Elvis." ~Adam J. Morris.
That change-up of his must be deadly
and his low 90s fastball must have a lot of life to it. It will be very interesting to see if his strikeouts remain this high as he advances levels. Does he have any control issues that may limit him to a reliever role?
Yes, he has some control issues
They have obviously improved some though. I think you’d be setting yourself up for disappointment if you expect him to maintain a 40% SO rate. 25% would be outstanding.
Cole raved about the changeup when he saw it in person a week or two ago

3rd inning, Perez's 2nd inning
My entire post disappeared. Perez is struggling with his command. They’ve given velo readings quite a bit. He’s anywhere between 88-91 MPH. I think that might be a little low though because the couple readings I heard on Nippert were around 90 MPH. I’ll continue charting when the 3rd inning starts.

It's actually pretty sick even if the gun is 3-4 mph fast
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
I have no doubt he was around 100 mph.
But there’s a reason nobody has ever thrown 105 on a modern gun before, because it’s probably not possible.

"really good" might be stretching it
He’s a college pick striking out in a 1/4 of his PAs in short season ball. He’s a prospect but he’s not really scaling the heights. He’s having an ok season, encouraging but not exciting.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
Well, perhaps I overstated
But the knee-jerk response when we drafted him was a combination of “who???”, “oh noez, another Mendonca!!!!” and “just a wasted pick because we couldn’t afford to sign anyone good.”
Not saying he’s Ryan Zimmerman, and the Jeremy Cleveland Rule certainly still applies, but there’s no reason to think he’s not legitimate. His OPS is OBP-driven rather than SLG driven (like Mendonca) and that’s reason to be optimistic that he’ll succeed at the next level too.
I’ll take the strikeouts when they’re a function of patience and not a function of being hack-prone.

Not a huge blow, though… after his hot start, Miggy V seems to have cooled down substantially.
