I think he gets too many carries personally
His best year he had what, 150?
Make him a third down back and inside the 10, let Choice and Jones wear defenses out otherwise.

I certainly still think he's servicable.
But his days of being the primary, explosive back are done, I think.
For some reason we understand this...
but the triumverate of Wade, Garrett, and Jerry don’t. Because of his contract maybe? We’ll see this year.
I'm not ready to give up on him yet.
He hasn’t been healthy for a while. I think he’ll make a come back if he’s healed up.

They
tend to not care about an inverted W if it comes before your front foot lands. As long as it’s in that upright position when it begins its forward movement, they say it doesn’t stress the arm that much.
I’m not sure who “they” is in those sentence. Also, I’m not particularly invested in pitching mechanics.
It's not past his shoulders
and certainly not the way CJ’s (or Prior’s) are. It’s why they call it an inverted W and not an M.
I love how how...
everyone is willing to accept it too without any real data to backup the claim that the inverted W causes injury.
"No nuts, no glory"
There's more to it than just the inverted W

by kevinkinsler on Aug 30, 2010 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions
But everything they say about it makes sense
it is an inefficient throwing motion that leads to unnecessary stress on the arm. Not everybody has the same physical attributes so some people might be able to withstand that extra stress but I don’t know that it hasn’t been scientifically proven that it does lead to extra stress.
You missed an S.

Rickey will forever be my favorite...
by ghostofErikThompson on Aug 30, 2010 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions
I have a Rickey story which is why he's #1 for me...
back at the old Arlington stadium, during this game, (which I assume I was only at because my mom wanted to see Raffy) my family and I were sitting up the third base line near left field. These drunk guys sitting behind us were heckling Rickey all night in a rather benign way. They weren’t bothering anyone. In fact, everyone was laughing at their barbs. At one point, one of them stood up and yelled, “RICKEY, YOU’RE OUR DAD! WHERE’S OUR CHILD SUPPORT!?” That’s not exactly clever or anything but Rickey looked over and just busted out laughing seeing these fat guys claiming to be his sons…right as Al Newman hit a ball right over his head because he wasn’t paying attention at that moment.
As Rickey walked off the field as the inning ended, he came near our section a little, bowed, and was promptly replaced in the game by Tony LaRussa for the next inning.
Rickey was awesome.

It's pretty incredibly stupid
how a division winner could play at the overall #1 seed in the AL just because the league won’t match up #1 and WC in the same division. Fix. This. Shit. Bud.

I defend this rule. Especially since the WC seems to always have
the 2nd best record in the AL. I think you just hate it because we all hate the east
No, I hate it because it's motherfucking idiotic.
East, West, I could care less. The #1 seed earns the right to play the WC and the other division winners earn the right not to have to face the 1 seed in the 1st round. It’s elementary seeding used in most every other sport.

by Past A Diving Michael Young on Aug 30, 2010 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions
My point is that it's damned irregular and doesn't fully reward a team for winning its division.
If baseball is going to place such an emphasis on the regular season, at least reward the division winners for making it through the never-ending marathon on top. Giving a team that didn’t win it’s division an edge over a team that did just because of division placement of WC/1 seed flies in the face of the season’s work. However, this year, people will point to the record and say the Rays deserve to avoid the Yankees because of their record…..so to hell with it all, I guess.
Son, if you really want something in this life, you have to work for it. Now quiet! They're about to announce the lottery numbers. - Homer Simpson
by SarasotaRanger on Aug 30, 2010 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions
I may be wrong on other sports
but it seems like an awesome record compared to your division doesn’t mean as much as an awesome record overall. This is especially true since we have the smallest division in the league
What I mean is it doesn't mean as much in team quality terms
in baseball obviously it does in winning your division. A badass 2nd place team impresses me more than a marginal first place team
Other sports don't count, too many teams
No team should have to face their division in the first round of the postseason in baseball. Never was the case when there wasn’t a WC, shouldn’t be now. But I don’t have a big stance against.
OTOH, do you think the WC automatically deserves the 4th seed or should it go purely by record? What about home field advantage? Most sports say last seed and no home field which fucks the WC this year.
This is a bogus photo

Then where is the NCAA investigation?
Where is the proof?
Baylor has been the most closely-watched basketball program in the history of the NCAA for the last seven years. Why haven’t they taken the school off probation and just canned the program, if cheating was indeed so rampant and institutionalized as Rick Barnes et al, who coincidentally have a lot to gain from sullying the name of Scott Drew, claim it to be?

until they fix the shit with coaches and the AAU bullshit, coaches like Drew and Callipari will continue to cheat
there is a line and those guys are willing to cross it…at least callipari is willing to admit he is scummy
Josey Wales is stupid
You didn't answer a single question I asked.
How do you know Drew is cheating? Why are you so sure that he is?
If he was, how would the NCAA not know, considering they have been camped out on Baylor’s campus for the better part of a decade following his every move?
And, assuming he is, do you honestly believe that Barnes is any better?
I've been trying to convince my family of the magic of cumin. They won't listen to me. It makes almost everything better.- PhilKid3, 8/16/2010.
by Aquaman, Esq. on Aug 30, 2010 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions
First of all
I guess the line comes from what you call cheating…
More than anything, guys like Drew, and many others walk a line between cheating and just being exceptionally dirty. If you cant at least admit that, it isnt worth me discussing it with you since you won’t admit to anything and will be blinded by your BU love.
They use negative tactics…they abuse the AAU program.
As for why i believe Barnes, I take him at his word. I believe him because coaches arent accusing him of cheating every year. I also believe it because we didnt get a recruit out of Houston for years because he wouldnt get in bed with the coach down there.
Im not really sure Drew is a cheater, and my inclination would be to say that he doesnt technically cheat. I still think he is dirty though and does things that are wrong. Furthermore, I hope the NCAA grows a pair and actually makes those things illegal…which they have often discussed.
Josey Wales is stupid
So bottom line, you believe Barnes because he is the coach of the UT Longhorns and he says he's not cheating.
But you don’t believe Drew because he is the coach of the Baylor Bears.
And you say that I am “blinded by [my] BU love.”
You have yet to provide any evidence whatsoever to indicate that Drew has done anything illegal, which is what this discussion was about from the beginning, other than rumor, innuendo, and slander from the very same people who stand to profit should Drew actually be caught doing something wrong (other Big XII coaches like Barnes), which he hasn’t.
You can keep falling back on the “where there is smoke, there is fire” argument all you want, but as far as actual proof goes, you have neither.
I've been trying to convince my family of the magic of cumin. They won't listen to me. It makes almost everything better.- PhilKid3, 8/16/2010.
by Aquaman, Esq. on Aug 30, 2010 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Fucking serious?
I gave you proof backed up by the fact that UT has flat out ignored recruits because Barnes wont play the game with the AAU coaches
I dont think you have a clue about how the AAU bullshit works or you would see how inherently dirty it is. Drew is not alone.
Furthermore, if the coaches stood to profit by accusing him of cheating, why isnt every coach being accused of it. Why is it that Drew is the only one being accused by every single big XII coach
And Drew has shown that he will pull the stunt of hiring on players family members to assist in landing a recruit.
Youre not going to listen to anything I say about the matter, and clearly you are ignoring everyone on the matter.
Josey Wales is stupid
I didn't ask for proof that Barnes wasn't dirty, which, if true, your story provides on a very limited basis.
Dirty != dirty on every single occasion.
What I asked for was actual evidence that Drew has done something illegal in a form OTHER than unsubstantiated rumor, innuendo, and slander. Again, you did not provide anything.
For the record, Drew never hired the family member of any player. If you’re going to throw something out there, make it accurate.

Actually, yeah he did
but there is really no point in us arguing about this topic…I have my opinion…you have yours. Mine is backed up by every coach in the Big XII….but fuck those idiots, they dont know what they are talking about.
Just do me a favor and never bad mouth any coach in any sport.
Josey Wales is stupid
Which player and which member of his family?
And prove that “every coach in the Big XII” backs up your opinion.
But you’re right, Barnes is absolutely squeaky clean in every respect, which entitles you to render judgment on not only the coaches of other schools, but their fans as well.
And you are absolutely a paragon of objectivity.

For someone
who rags on Borbon’s offense all the time:
(per FanGraphs)
Borbon has cost the team 13 runs on offense.
Young has cost the team 15 runs in the field (by DRS).
The difference is none of us try to defend Borbon’s hitting.
But you defend his defense and
look the other way when his intelligence or Vagisil encased throwing arm is questioned.
The little pussy is rocking an OPS below .520 post AS Break and is beyond brain-dead as a ball player, find another example.

I disagree, CJ is on fire and can work out of trouble
Skins on the wall aside, CJ is lights out right now
So you really think CJ Wilson is a better bet to keep runs from scoring going forward than Cliff Lee?
If I needed a starter in 5 days, and only one
I have to go CJ, he’s earned it since the break. Cliff is in a very un-Cliff-like position over the past couple of starts (or longer if you expect him to be truly Cliff-like), but you can’t deny it
No, you don't have to go with Ceej.
And I can’t possibly believe you would.
I can’t deny Lee’s last three starts aren’t like him. I can deny that if you bet on three starts to continue before you bet on three years to continue, you’ll usually be right.
Cliff is still my game 1 starter in the playoffs
Experience, skins on the wall, etc. I struggle to find a better pitcher since the break than CJ (yes, I could go look it up and no I’m not talking about just wins/ERA)
True, but it begs the question
how many strong starts does CJ need to have for it to be #1 worthy?
In Texas no less?
/ducks
25th in WAR
this year (before tonight’s game).
He’d be someone’s #1. Just not on a team that has the #17 and #2 in pitching WAR.
How many starts does it need for him to be No. 1 caliber?
Well, he already is in that area, if not a very good No. 2 at worst, this season.
It takes about 550 Batters Faced for most in-season pitching stats that ever will stabilize to do so. So we can be fairly confident Ceej will continue to be a TORP-caliber or very close the rest of this season. But you need more than a season to have a really reliable idea of a pitcher.
As far as how much it would take for him to be considered better than Lee, much more than a couple weeks of being better. Much more than a couple months of being better.
Of course, I've already stated Lee is still my playoff game 1 pitcher
…I just don’t feel as comfortable with a Cliff start tomorrow like I would with CJ, that’s all

CJ Wilson's line looked good.
Was his stuff dominant, or is that mainly due to the Royals?

I don’t quite want to say dominant, but that’s semantic. He was good. The Royals helped a ton, but I think he would have held any offense under their average tonight.

Yea that makes it even more worthless than
the fact it’s produced by espn
having saves on there is silly
unless there are no really dominant starters. And there are a lot this year.
Go Rice Owls!
It's designed to predict voters, right? Not actually be a measure of deservingness?
I’d be interested to see how good it is at that.
but I'd guess voters won't look to saves
unless there is a conspicuous dearth of starters. Say the K leader is sporting a 4.30 ERA, and no one has more than 17 wins.
But that is the problem to fitting a linear model to something like this
Go Rice Owls!
I bet it is a guess-and-check formula
They grab some retrosheet dumps and do a massive guess and check algorithm and tweak it
I understand having some of those stats
may make sense even though we don’t grade a pitcher that way. The voters love winners; winning pitchers and winning teams. Losses and lack of walks/WHIP is bad tho
Completely forgot what a great year Bucholtz is having

he is half mantis half man
he is a demimantis that you should not mess with
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Again, I'm getting confused by the conversation.
I’m looking at it the same way you are: “who would you vote for today?” But the rest of the comments look like “who would the writers vote for today?”
Either way, I kind of doubt Ceej is a real contender. But he might get a few votes from writers if the season ended today.
I think this particular discussion is just an overreaction to his start today and his string of recent starts, really.
I don’t always have sex with men…but when I do, I prefer Josh Hamilton. - AJM
CJ has put up very nice looking numbers outside of a bad stretch in late May
I think it is reasonable to expect a 6th or 7th place finish in the CY voting, with probably 5-6 3rd place votes.
I’d hardly say that is an overreaction
Go Rice Owls!
Yeah, he's done a pretty good job of making me think his bad stretch was just a bad stretch, instead of signs of impending doom.
I’m pretty comfortable calling him an awesome No. 2 caliber guy at worst. At least for 2010.
As we've seen from certain other pitchers who I won't name
anyone can have a bad stretch.
Most of us have been waiting for the “CJ has never pitched this many innings” shoe to drop, but it doesn’t appear to be dropping. If he can keep this up into October, the fact he’ll probably be starting Game 3 of the ALDS will be a big, big advantage for Texas.
Go Rice Owls!
So in the ALDS who's your starters?
1. Lee
2. Lewis
3. Wilson
4. Lee
5. Lewis
or does Hunter get in there somewhere?
Depends on the schedule and the situation.
If I’m able to determine Lee’s fine pitching short rest and/or it works out that he’s not on short rest and/or the Rangers aren’t up in the series, I’d just skip the 4th starter.
Otherwise, yeah, probably Hunter, but I’d rather wait until the end of the season when we have more information. And I’d consider, if not probably use, Holland if it’s a lineup that struggles with lefties.
The thing with Ceej. . .
. . . was that we have almost no previous sample of starting to look at, and the innings piling up was already a concern. So when he hit a tough stretch, I started assuming that was the problem.
Fortunately, it looks like I was wrong.
Carlos Gonzalez just tripled in the tying run and scored on a throwing error to give the Rockies the lead in the 9th.
Three outs from gaining ground on the entire wild card race tonight.
CGon is really freaking good
thank you A’s for trading that guy.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Most hitters are better at home than on the road.
And the more extreme the park, the more extreme the splits become.
Most Rockies players’ start hitting better on the road when they leave. This is one reason park effects give a better view than simply looking at home/road splits for individuals.

Lazy Analysis Alert
At first glance, Boesch, Jackson, Jaso and Matusz have all put up more Wins Above Replacement at FanGraphs, prior to tonight. Jaso and Matusz have more than doubled him, Jackson has nearly tripled him. (Not including leverage, of course.)
Again, obviously simplifying things, but, at the very least, it should indicate it’s not hard at all to argue Feliz as less than the most deserving.
I do hope he wins it, though. And if you repeat last year’s standard, he probably should.
Mitch Moreland is catching up fast, by the way. Not sure if facing righties would bring him down or not.
If you do include leverage, btw. . .
. . . Feliz rockets past Boesch and Jaso and gets pretty close to Matusz.
And there's no way at all Matusz wins the ROY

And tRA WAR*pLI puts him at 2.4.
So now he’s ahead of everyone who isn’t Jackson, I believe. And, while I wouldn’t use it as more than a tie-breaker type thing personally, I do think things like considered potential and such could also be included in Rookie of the Year debates. And now you’ve constructed, I think, a very good argument for Feliz. It’s certainly not an air-tight argument, but also not one I think can just be dismissed.
If things hold up and he wins it, I’ll sure as hell be happy and I don’t think it will be “wrong,” the logical part of my brain is just happy if someone acknowledges he isn’t the most clearly deserving.
Good.
I really hope Feliz wins it because I’m biased, but, objectively, I’m glad he’s not being treated as the obvious choice, since he’s not.
He is definately the leading contender
He has to finish the season strong but I don’t see any better rookie in the AL

I smell what you're steppin in
and I don’t have last years numbers in front of me but I’m sure they would support Elvis over Bailey
Yes.
And probably Anderson over all. I absolutely would not have voted for Bailey. If memory serves, I wouldn’t have even had him on my ballot.
So maybe I'm being bias
but the precedent was set last year w/ Bailey winning over Elvis so I will feel violated if Feliz doesn’t
When I looked the other day, Feliz blew away 09 Bailey
Then again, Jackson has somewhat better numbers than 09 Elvis
Yeah.
And I can certainly see legitimate arguments that would make Feliz a less-than-crazy choice. That may be justifying it to myself because I want him to win, but whatever.
But if people are arguing against him, that probably means they’re starting to look past saves as an evaluative tool, and that makes me happy.

They've got a great team
but they’ve never faced expectations like this. I know that sounds stupid, but the consensus on campus is that they expect at the least, a return to a BCS bowl game. I think that’s reasonable.
I just worry about the losses of Jerry Hughes, Washington, and the two corners on defense. The offense is going to be one of the best again this season.
I think part of the reason I’m worried is that I’ve been having too much fun with the Rangers this year to care about football.

On paper, TCU should win this.
OSU is breaking in a new QB, and TCU’s D has done a good job of stopping big time RB’s like Quizz Rodgers in the past.
It should still be a fun game.

I've had people saying TCU will beat OSU by 20.
I disagree. However, I still feel pretty confident about a win. I trust GP wholeheartedly to reload on the defensive side and this offense is probably the best TCU’s had since I was a freshman in 2005.
Not to mention the special jerseys and what’s essentially an extra home game this weekend.

only thing that could hurt TCU Saturday
is that it’s the first game of the year. Oklahoma was supposed to go to Arlington and steamroll BYU last year. By halftime, their season had changed for the worse. You never know how good your team is or isn’t until that first game against a opponent that you “should” beat.
