New Evan Grant Newsletter up
Evan Grant has a new edition of his Rangers newsletter up...
Evan talks about potential free agent targets this offseason, including a discussion of whether bringing Adrian Beltre to Texas (which would allow Michael Young to move to DH) might be an option, along with several Cliff Lee questions, an Emily Jones question, and what is going to happen with Rich Harden, among other things...
Check it out...

3rd base
what about Aramis Ramizrez?
Coming off a bad, injury filled year but his OPS the last 5 years is over .900.
If you get Aramis...
…might as well stick him at DH and let Young stay at 3B.

I don't think he's much of an improvement over Young in the field
Is he?
Though I think he is an interesting “buy low” candidate. Even as a DH/3b platoon with Young. Maybe both would be better in the field if they weren’t out there every day
Go Rice Owls!
Terrible in the field.

BUT WHY WOULD YOU NEED A THIRD BASEMAN?
YOU’VE GOT MICHAEL YOUNG! HE’S AWESOME IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE AND ALSO SMILED AT ME ONCE SO THEREFORE HE IS GREAT!

If the Rangers signed Beltre...
and moved Young to DH my happy pants would explode.

Is Young ready to become a full time DH?
What I mean by that is he mentally ready to not play the field every day and still be able to prepare himself to to focus on something that only requires effort 4 to 5 times a night? I would personally love to see it as well I just wondered how everyone felt he would respond to it.
What are we at the park for except to win? I'd trip my mother. I'd help her up, brush her off, tell her I'm sorry. But mother don't make it to third. ~Leo Durocher
I think I'd rather
they put Young out in Left field. he’s athletic enough for it.
Mal: Well, quite a lot of fuss. If I didn't know better, I'd think we were dangerous.
Thats a thought.
LF and spell the middle infield from time to time?

I was thinking
just left field. utility infielders (as we have seen this year) are EASY to find…..
Mal: Well, quite a lot of fuss. If I didn't know better, I'd think we were dangerous.
Young isn't going to be playing LF ever
Putting a crappy IF in the OF for the first time in his pro career isn’t going to help anything. And you aren’t moving Hamilton and Cruz out of the COF spots. As long as those 2 are here, no one is going to be moved to the COF spot.

Jesus.
It’s now more than two years since Hurley has pitched in a game and he’s going to be 25 in three weeks, so the ability to come back is no sure thing.
Emphasis mine. Feel bad for the guy.

Evan is flat wrong
But despite the defensive shortcomings, which extend only to range (not hands or arm strength), Young remains one of the better overall options at third
OK, I’ll give him arm strength. But his 9 throwing errors are tied for first in the MLs. His 10 fielding errors are tied for third in the MLs. In total, his 19 errors do not demonstrate a player with good hands or an accurate arm.
it's because Young gets to more balls than other 3Bs in the AL
duh!

That's actually
just a this year thing. in the past he was actually pretty fair at avoiding errors.
Mal: Well, quite a lot of fuss. If I didn't know better, I'd think we were dangerous.
Or the errors were not regarded as such by the official scorers.
If it were up to me, Young would probably have 10-12 more than he has been given.

Young usually has been pretty good at fielding what he gets to
This year, he hasn’t done that at all and has struggled in getting to balls as well as fielding whats towards him.
His arm strength is great, but his throws have never been the most accurate. This year, when Davis hasn’t played 1B, that’s shown to be more of a problem than in the past too.
Given his age, I don’t expect things to get better.

Opinion question:
I started looking at shutdown innings (on a lark; thanks B-R)…
Should I count shutdown innings produced by two pitchers together (such as happened in game 2 of the year, when O’Day and Oliver combined for one)? Or just give each pitcher credit only if he completes it?
Eh, I went ahead and decided to give partial credit.
Mostly because it was the only way Oliver got any in April; also, it could then lend itself to something like “shutdown inning percentage.”
So far (through the month of April), the team leader is Colby Lewis, with nine.
The bullpen leader, on the other hand, is…Chris Ray, with 3 2/3.
Half-inning following a half-inning in which we scored...
In which the opposing team did not score.
If I have time, I might go back and track “super-shutdown” innings, (innings after we scored where we didn’t allow a base-runner).
Rangers interested in Francoeur
The Rangers are considering Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur as a bench option, reports ESPN’s Adam Rubin. Francoeur has about $897K remaining on his contract and is likely to be non-tendered after the season. The 26-year-old is hitting just .236/.293/.369 in 443 plate appearances.
"We are no longer a ride at Six Flags, we are in contention to do some things that will make our lives complete. I have been waiting for this for a long time." - Chuck Morgan
NO!!!
just say NO to Francoeur. In the pantheon of people who have no plate discipline, he stands out as someone who just doesn’t walk. at all. get Juan Pierre first. no wait. don’t get either……
Mal: Well, quite a lot of fuss. If I didn't know better, I'd think we were dangerous.
Yeah, this has been news for about 1.5 weeks
I hope it’s not down to an either/or with him or Tavares.

So, does this go in the plus column or the negative column when Cliff is deciding on our offer this winter?
According to Cliff Lee, Maddux’s game-planning is the most thorough and detailed he’s ever seen.

I would think it couldn't hurt.
Lee seems to be a very intelligent pitcher, relying on poorly hit pitches more than strikeouts.
Its definintely a plus
But again, its going to come down to the money.
What this really says is that the Rangers clearly made the right decision when they decided to sign Maddux as the pitching coach.
