9/1 Minors Thread: Marteen

Thought we should have another one of these guys. I don't really have the time to write anything thought provoking here like some of the other Minors threads have, so I'll just toss up today's starters.

Today’s Starters (Scott Lucas)
AAA: Beltre / Nippert
AA: Martin Perez
High-A: Wilfredo Boscan
Low-A: Jake Brigham
Short-A: Ben Henry

Hopefully Marteen has a nice start and Fredo keeps being a a badass strike throwing fool.

And speaking of Boscan, has his stock this season risen for anyone else? He has added 3 strikeouts per 9 innings from last year, and is walking half a batter more per 9 innings than last year. The GB% is still an excellent 51%.

KendallRogersYS For those asking, it does look like the #Rangers and #Astros have interest in first-rounder Barret Loux. How much? we’ll find out. #mlbdraft

Jared Hoying

I have a few questions about this guy. What does his ceiling look like? I was browsing through Spokane’s roster and saw this guy’s ridiculous year. .326/.379/.552 with 12 2B, 5 3B, and 10 HR. 19 stolen bases in 28 attempts. Strikes out a lot. Is he a legit prospect or just a college player dominating a level that he should?

IIRC, someone said really long swing that poses issues down the road

I don't know if I would call it long, but it's definitely ugly.

From Seiler's predraft notebook...

Jared Hoying is a solid shortstop from Toledo University. Hoying came to Toledo from Fort Loramie High School in Fort Loramie, Ohio, a small western Ohio town north of Dayton. He was a solid high school player, but more of a future college than pro player, so he went undrafted and headed to Toledo.

As a freshman, he played most of the year as the Rockets’ starting shortstop, and while his numbers were only decent, the amount of pop he showed meant there was something to look forward to in his bat. He improved steadily as a sophomore, and that meant he was expected to really turn the lights on as a junior, when he was to be draft-eligible again. However, he’s gone backwards this spring, still showing the same pop, but still struggling with plate discipline issues. That weakness likely means he’s best as a future utility player, as his ceiling is limited by his bat. At the plate, he’s plagued by an inability to make contact at times, and it’s not due to lack of aggressiveness. His hit tool, which is solid-average, is actually fairly good, as he has the mechanics to be a decent hitter, but he lacks that fundamental ability to read a pitch and hit it where it comes in.

His power is average, as well, so he’s a solid hitter on paper. Add in an above-average run tool, and you should have one solid offensive weapon. However, the plate discipline issues overshadow it all. Defensively, he’s not good enough to stick at shortstop, and his hands are bad enough that third base might not be an option, either, as he’s a below-average fielder. His arm is above average, so he might handle an outfield corner in the future. As a college player with solid tools, he could go in rounds seven to ten, where he should be signable.

I think skipping A+ might have been bad for him

I think he would have put up Teheran numbers in Bakersfield and that would have been good for him. I guess. Just talking out of my ass at this point

Bad for his stats, maybe, but I doubt it was bad for his development.

Yup, as long as he's continuing to pile up strikeouts, I'm not overly worried

Sure, I’m disappointed a bit because I wanted to see him in Arlington as a September callup. But if that’s not to be his development trajectory, that’s fine.

This where the whole Sickels/Parks “overmatched” issue rears its head. The stat lines are not particularly good right now, but what all goes into that stat line – is he working on specific pitches (I presume the club still has him developing his secondaries), is he being killed by a terrible supporting cast at Frisco?

There’s been no indication that the scouts are down on Marteen, so I’m not going to be down myself. That the scouts continued to RAVE about Engel Beltre’s awesomeness last year in the face of terrible numbers, and Engel’s subsequent breakout season, reminds us that numbers alone cannot evaluate a prospect.

It was mentioned by Cole, Parks, and others on numerous occasions

We would lament Engel’s terrible numbers and they said that the scouts weren’t down on him at all, and were just as excited about him as they’d ever been.

Yeah

that scout was named George Will apparently. He went on to write a whole op-ed piece about his experience watching Engel Beltre play last year (and how much hope the game gave to all poor Latin Americans and what a unique opportunity it gave them a chance to learn American). The only problem was that the game which he was referring to was in 2008. Beltre was actually benched for the game Will went to see in 2009; too much first pitch swinging.

Just remember how young he is to be playing in AA

He’s still learning how to be a pitcher. He gets ahead in counts then nibbles or gives something good to hit.
But when he’s on , he’s pretty prettty prettty good
