Not really

Squillaci will take his place and Djourou is exciting so it shouldn’t be that bad. But the injuries are annoying are getting ridiculous, way too many injury prone players on the team.

Belgium

They have Vermaelen and Kompany at center half with teenager Dedryck Boyota on the come.
Yet they suck.

by shroomer on Sep 10, 2010 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Belgium is going to be absolutely ridiculous in a few years.

Vermaelan, Kompany, Hazard, Lukaku, Defour, Fellaini, Witsel, Dembele…they have so many talented players in their teens or early 20’s.

Give it some time. They’ll be really good soon.

by LiamP on Sep 10, 2010 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Belgium

Yeah, they have a ton of good youngsters. Bosnia could be interesting as well, with Pjanic, Dzeko, and Begovic.

by RCCook on Sep 10, 2010 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

As it was pointed out to me

There seems to be some persistent internal disarray/communications issues between the French-, German-, and Flemish-speaking members of the side, with each group keeping more or less to themselves. So it’s a bunch of talented individuals right now, but no team.

But if they can gel, somehow, watch out.

Was it him or Koscielny who got manhandled by Blackburn?

Christ, the Hammers are terrible

Chelsea just scored one of the most ridiculous goals I’ve ever seen- Robert Green attempts to save the ball, he muffs it, but it bounces to a defender. The defender kicks the ball- right at Kalou- and it ricochets off him, right over Green, and into the West Ham net.

by RCCook on Sep 11, 2010 9:23 AM CDT reply actions

Whatever you do, don't switch over to the City game.

It’s some horrible soccer over here. Strange line-up from Mancini. Adam Johnson is still blazing up and down the field, but that’s about all that’s working for City. Blackburn are playing rugged and slowing down to turn every FK into a long arc into the City box looking for a goalmouth scramble. Mancini has won only 2 outta his last 8 EPL games stretching back to last season, and he’s currently behind 0-1 to freakin’ Blackburn today. Dude needs to start getting it done. A win on a day when ManU, Arsenal and Spurs all might falter would be huge. C’mon …

by shroomer on Sep 11, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Spurs tied. Not a killer draw considering we don't lose ground to our CL rivals.

The first half of this season is gonna be a roller-coaster. Mancini had a plan. That plan was wrecked by Kolarov and Boateng going down right off the bat. He hasn’t adjusted and it’s costing us points.

I think that most people thought that

Man Utd or maaaybe City were the only ones who could challenge Chelsea this year, but I can’t believe how much of a spread they’ve already opened up. They are already seven points up on Tottenham and City and at least five up on Liverpool after four games. I would guess that those guys are essentially playing for champions league spots already. Goal differential is also striking, as City are fourth in the league at +2, while Chelsea are a +16.

I guess it doesn’t hurt that they haven’t played a single top half of the table caliber side, though.

The Real Madrid report - "If you ain't Galacticos ... you ain't shit."

Real 1 – 0 Osasuna. See, this is exactly why I was interested in following Real this season. What a difference from the first game to this one.

Jose was much more involved – directing and up on his feet rather than just passively observing like the first game.

Ozil stood out on the field the same way Adam Johnson stands out for City. It was like his performances at the World Cup except he didn’t have Klose putting away all his set-ups. He coulda had like 6 assists if dudes woulda just hit the net. This is the Ozil I was hoping to get to see.

I was afraid Jose would choose to try to play ‘pretty’ for the uppity Spaniards rather than just play Jose-ball and collect W’s and trophies. This game gives me heart he’ll stick to his guns. They had 64% possession but played a balls-out opportunistic attacking bumrush style. Very balanced field with Ramos back over at RB. And very balanced effort from all the stars – even Ronaldo put out consistent effort and even had a fine tackle tracking back to quash an Osasuna transition attempt.

OT – I don’t have anyone to root for in Serie A, instead I’m just gonna root against AC Milan. Booooo AC Milan! Two reasons: obviously jerkface Robinho being there, but also so they will suck and won’t make Balotelli pine for a transfer to his fav team in Italy. They can’t lose enough for me. And they’re losing today. So yay.

Back to Real Ozil. That’s what I call them now. See what I did there? Anyway, I think DiMaria might displace Benzama’s PT. Jose is sussing the Frenchie out and I’m guessing he might not like what he’s seeing. Also, they played quicker without the kid Canales kinda bogging things down. Hope Canales was watching how the big boys do it.

The Osasuna goalie, Ricardo, stood on his head. Dude really impressed me.

I love Carvalho. I loved him at Chelsea and now I love him with Real. He’s like the anti-Kolo in his defensive decisiveness.

The Real home fans act very very odd in the stands. Not like drunks, but like people on acid or shrooms. Absinthe? Very weird acting peepus.

Real plays Ajax midweek in the CL. Until then, y’all stay Galactic.

Rovers - ManCity

So holding a Galacticos wannabe team to a draw on their home pitch is so gratifying. I know Rovers didn’t do it by flowing play and intelligent passing, but then that’s what the Prem is turning into and ManCity is a big part of that.

I am a bit sad that Mame Diouf won’t be a long term part of this team. He looks very promising even if he’s a bit out of his depth right now. Maybe we can pull a Bentley and sign him long term? Maybe…

What's the rumpus?

I watched lots of this match.

Rangers parked the bus, but I didn’t think they were very dirty or anything. Even the Valencia injury wasn’t due to an overly criminal act. Just sort of a freak accident. And I’m a HUGE Valencia fan. Rooney looked pretty bummed standing over Valencia while the EMT’s tended to him. He knew he wasn’t gonna see any more of those sweet Valencia feed-balls for the rest of the season. Now I guess Giggs will be my fav ManU player. It sure will make that 2nd leg @Rangers an interesting match.

Same report as Real's game vs Osasuna.

Ozil rocked and suckahs couldn’t put away his sweet feeds. Ronaldo shot eleventy billion times from all angles and distances with little to no chance of finding the net. And he whiffed on an open goal from 5 feet out. DOH!! Iker saved a goal with a reaction parry that earned him an “El Gato” from the Spanish pxp guy. DiMaria took Benzama’s place like I suspected and did marginally better. Arbeloa ain’t no Sergio Ramos, for sure. I know I hated on Ramos to begin with, but I’ve grown to appreciated the brother.

Switched to Everton game

What is with the Toffies? They look like the promotion side not sure how to handle the big stage and bright lights. Newcastle’s goal by Ben Afa was quality no doubt but Everton look they they can’t score if their life depended on it and they can’t seem to hang onto the ball either. There appear to be some serious problems at Goodison Park.

Am I alone in that assessment or are the rest of you seeing this too?

by Hull Fan on Sep 18, 2010 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't like them playing Fellaini so high. Last year him and Pienaar

dealt death shoulder to shoulder in MF. No scrappy Cahill today either. Haven’t watched them tho’ – just what I’ve gathered from their lineup card.

by shroomer on Sep 18, 2010 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Newcastle had them on their heels

controlled the ball and it just seemed they can’t form a decent attack. Every time they tried to string together some passes it went awry.

Hey I only watched for a 15 minute span but from what I saw their struggles so far make a lot more sense now. They should be better but they really lack a quality striker. Though the way they’re going I’m not sure they could get the ball up to one right now.

by Hull Fan on Sep 18, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

The real Everton finally showed up?

Can’t say for sure but they look much, much better in the 2nd half. Controlling the ball, creating chances. Haven’t buried anything but also don’t look like they should be run off the pitch either.

Bet this is weird for VDV

He’s used to a certain amount of tika-taka, even with Real. Spurs are playing very direct, not many touches on their way to the other goalmouth. His positional sense is such that he should get lotsa dangerous chances tho’. Almost volleyed one home earlier today.

Watching Arsenal struggle at Sunderland

makes me feel better about our game there. City had personnel/newness problems yet stil managed to hold about 65% possession at HT while creating 2/3 golden scoring chances. We also shut down Sun’s chances until the 92nd freakin’ minute. Overall, Sun gave us fits, too, tho. Arsenal looks so slight of frame to my eye. It reminds me of how RB Salzburg looked against us midweek in Austria. Wilshire has disappointed. Nasri hasn’t really touched it much. Sunderland seems like a nice team for City loan Onouha to play regularly – some decent development could occur.

slippery, pin-bally conditions at the DW - 1-0 City at HT

City finally gets some offensive luck – Tevez ends up with a Route 1 ball with only the goalie to beat. One more goal and this should be ours fo’ sho. Mancini looks like he wants to strangle Micah Richards. Silva and Milner haven’t done much – tough slogging. We’ve got 57% possession but none of it has lasted that long before somebody slips or the wet ball is mishit. De Jong’s already picked up a yellow for a bunch of stupid tackles, so we could go a man down, which would make things interesting.

Their goal

was on a badly blown call, too. Keane was at least two yards offsides, and the linesman was just out of position. One of the two linesmen also badly blew an offside call on Gibbs earlier, as well.

I was surprised at how many first team players Arsnal played. They either wanted to win that game or a league cup trophy more than usual. They do have a few of their young players injured, but that Lansbury was basically the only guy you wouldn’t see in a PL game. But even against top division clubs in recent years, I think Jay Emmanuel Thomas and Craig Eastmond would have been definite starts.

Interesting that Bolton lost to Burnley, the Coyle connection and all.

Real Madrid won - 3 red cards sprinkled in ...

It’s really tough trying to get into Real. There are lotsa knobheads on this team. DiMaria, Higuain and Ronaldo across the front is just too much MEEEEEEE-ness to stomach. Tevez’ workrate and all-around game has spoiled me.

Ozil has stepped off the gas – probably because nobody can put away his sweet balls. He’s probably wise to coast a bit until a team-game coalesces around his wonderful play. Dude is good, Jack.

The guy I hated the most to begin with, Sergio Ramos, is now a bit of a fav considering he gives consistent effort, plays a team game, runs his ass off, is very skilled and can defend well, too. Reminds me of how I feel about Boateng. Boateng is so good I wish we had two of him at City – one to play RB and one to play in the center next to Kompany. Same with Ramos – would be nice to have him play both RB and in the center at the same time. Damn you lack of cloning research!! And Iker is a ridic keeper – he saves a goal or two a game with his reflexes. Meow.

One guy I’m really disappointed in is Xabi Alonzo. I don’t know if he’s playing hurt or what, but I’m gonna throw out an HSO that should stir y’all up – considering their current form … Gareth Barry >> Xabi Alonzo. Bang, yeah I said it. Real shoulda signed Yaya, he’d be perfect in their midfield. Guess they couldn’t afford 220K/week – heh.

It’s interesting trying to guess what Jose’s thinking, because this roster is a personality minefield. How is he gonna win trophies with these knuckleheads? My guess is he won’t until he adjusts the roster next summer. If he pulls it off before then it’ll be a coaching miracle.

JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Sep 22, 2010 8:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Everybody seems to ignore the "considering their current form"

… but in ignoring it you bring up a good point. My image of Xabi was always higher up the field. For Real he’s playing very deep, shoulder to shoulder with the CDM – a role identical to Barry with City. The vaunted Xabi eye and passing don’t get a lot of play, starved by Real’s current team style/form. Barry is getting tons more touches with City and looks sprier and more sure footed so far this season. I didn’t expect Xabi to be in Barry’s role, I expected him to be in Gerard’s role, or Xavi’s, or even Ozil’s. Instead, he’s just slogging around next to Sami Khedira or Lass in front of the CD’s. Maybe it’s because of the injuries to Real’s defense – he’s taking better care to help out deeper. But, he also just isn’t eating much space right now, unlike Barry who seems constantly on the ball. Guess my overall point is that I thought Xabi was supposed to be awesome, but he hasn’t been so far this season. Currently Barry is 28th overall and the best City player on the EPL’s actim index – whatever that is. But, I think it jibes with my eyeballs. Barry is playing currently a lot better than you guys think he is. And Alonzo is playing a lot worse than we all think he is capable of playing. Hence the HSO.

by shroomer on Sep 22, 2010 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

just occured to me ...

Between Spain’s long run during the summer and Nigel De Jong’s rib-crunching chest tackle, Xabi might not be feeling very spry. While Barry rested lots this summer and received tons and tons of treatment for his injury woes trying to get him into the England squad in SA – so old Gareth might be feeling just the opposite, well-rested and healthy-strong. hmmm …

by shroomer on Sep 22, 2010 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

He’s always been a deep-lying playmaker really.

by LiamP on Sep 22, 2010 7:17 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Xabi playing deep

That’s probably more on Mourinho than it is on Xabi. The Special One tends to play a conservative, defensive style, so 2 CDMs makes sense.

I agree that Barry’s a very good player who is taken for granted by a lot of fans.

Hodgson

Yeah, I can blame him. No first teamers on the bench in case the game was close? Not making any subs until extra time? Not adjusting his tactics during the match when it’s clear that Plan A wasn’t working?

I keep hearing from the media about how Rafa left Roy with a crap side. Bullshit. We had 12 players at the World Cup- more than any team except Chelsea or Barca. I know losing Masch hurt, but we look like a Sunday league side right now, and that’s on Hodgson, as well as on the players who keep going out there and giving a half-ass effort. There’s no excuse for it.

I always hate losing early on in the CC

It’s really the only time that guys like Bebe and Magnus Eikrem will see time outside of the reserves. Likewise, it’ll be the only time I get to see them in a game as opposed to highlights. It’s a nice tourney if you’re into your developmental system.

by LiamP on Sep 22, 2010 7:15 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, I can see that

I’m just decidedly unenthusiastic about it. There are so many levels between prospect on one of the bigger teams to full-time player on a Treble contender that it seems more of a task in futility, especially since the Big 4/5 are likely to be filling their holes from the outside anyways.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Sep 22, 2010 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Not true.

Given the level of competition, it’s obviously harder but not impossible. Plus, these are reserve level guys as opposed to academy level…they’re further along.

Josh McEachran and Kakuta, for example, look well capable of breaking into Chelsea’s first team in a few years.

by LiamP on Sep 23, 2010 1:02 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I've seen Kakuta play

He’s still in the promising, but needs seasoning category to me. He seems to have a good feel for positioning, but he still makes some egregious blunders.

McEachran I knew nothing about, but read that he had quite the performance yesterday.

It just seems like most of your quality players come from the transfer market. Not necessarily the galaticos strategy, but purchasing promising players who have already established themselves at a lower level of competition.
