i know not everyone is a fan of bill simmons

but this was pure gold:

First, I seem to be the only person who remembers that the Jets were 9-7 last year. You’d think they went 19 and minus-3. Second, I don’t trust the Sanchize even a little. Not a smidge. Unless he was trying to get us drinks from a crowded bar and the bartender was a cute female

sanchez is pretty horrible — people seem to forget that…

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

I like Adam’s comment that everyone is probably so giddy about saying how the Jets are overrated, they’re probably underrated now.

Agreed that Sanchez was mostly terrible

but he did win playoff games at Cincy & SDO as a bus driver and made plays when he necessary.

The jury is still out on him and I agree with BSimmons (who I like a lot).

I took Houston +2 for a fairly large play anybody else see a good game for a wager?

Can’t figure out the Cowboys because that OL sucks…Romo got sacked 5 times in one quarter by the Raiders. That’s not good unless the Raiders have become the ’85 Bears.

so?

the point is that the Jets were a good playoff team last year with him bad, and a QB going from 1st year to 2nd is typically a huge source of improvement.

All that crappy 2009 means is that if he is even decent it amounts to a huge improvement to an already good Jets team.

The biggest thing was...

…the Collie fumble in the 4th quarter.

Indy completed a pass that had them in the Houston red zone, down 10, with a chance to get it to 3 if they convert.

Collie gets stripped, Houston gets the ball back and has those 4 big runs and puts it in the end zone, and that was pretty much that, although Indy scored 2 more TDs.

Houston played very well against one of the best teams in the NFL, and came away with a 10 point victory that could have been more.

But Indy was in the game in the 4th quarter. It wasn’t a blowout.

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 12, 2010 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Schaub's int in the 2nd put the Colts in the game

Houston could have easily went up 20-0, 16-0 at the very least…

Would you have called it a blowout if it was a 17 point win?

"what I have learned in 11 years in the sports business is that the dumbest guys in the room are always the media guys." - mark cuban

by Longhorn on Sep 12, 2010 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

It depends on how it got to 17 points

If it was 17 because Indy didn’t score that last TD? Probably not.

If it was 17 because Houston was up 24 in the 4th, played some scrubs, and Indy came back to get it to 17? Probably.

Indy was in the game well into the 4th quarter.

Detroit got royally fucked

That has to be one of the stupidest rules in the NFL

Johnson clearly caught it, got both feet down, and was holding the ball firmly with one hand as he fell to the ground.

But because it slipped away when he was getting up its ruled incomplete.

Total horseshit rule. Its the correct call of the current rule but the rule itself is utter bullshit

Wow

AJM must be happy. His favorite team pulled the upset.

Looking at the box score though, Schaub had a 67.5 rating whereas Manning had excellent stats. Looks to me like pretty much a fluke game where Arian Foster went off. Not an indication of things to come.

And lets keep in mind, Houston has sucky DC and WILL have a sucky defense.

Other than that, Giants won, ominous considering I think they’ll be back this year. Packer+ media darling Rodgers struggling early, yay. Surprised that Denver lost.

There’s not enough games, wtf. Two monday nighters, sunday nighter, thursday nighter, leaves not enough Sunday games. And we havent even got into bye weeks yet.

Considering how terrible the Indy defense looked against the run (and yes, Brett, I watched most of the game, I was up and down during the fourth)

They have problems. Foster wasn’t just breaking fluke runs.

Refr bias

I understand some of these calls look legit, but give me a break. I’m quite sure the teams we play are getting away with the same stuff on every play.

Seriously, the refs are out to get us. Anytime the other teams bogs down or at a crucial point the refs will bail them out. How many penalties on us versus them this game? Let alone all our penalties are at crucial moments and none of there’s are. It’s the same every single game.

And while I’m ranting, the Cowboys are so stupid. We punt more from the 35-40 yard line then every other team in the league COMBINED. Why the FUCK not occasionally play for the FG there? Especially when it was 5 yards to 1st down anyway, and of course Garett goes with the low percentage deep throw. Our opponent never, EVER punts from the 35-40. Because if nothing else they go for it.

by Sharky on Sep 12, 2010 9:22 PM CDT reply actions

"Out to get us?"

You realize you’re talking about the Dallas Cowboys, right?

They get penalties because they’re dumb, not because the refs hate them. Dumb players do dumb things, and we have some seriously DUMB players.

The Broncos actually disprove his point entirely.

They made their lines out of smaller, more athletic guys that could zone block and cut defensive lineman like crazy. They taught a specific scheme and found guys to fit that scheme.

Now look at the 90’s Cowboys, who had gigantic road graders on the oline who relied on strength and size. You’re talking about two entirely different sets of athletes.

never in a million years

would they have called that same play against washington

the commenters woulda "aww shucks skins got away with a lil normal no big deal holding there, but who cares what a fantastic win!!!! so gutty by the redskins!!!:

by Sharky on Sep 12, 2010 10:39 PM CDT reply actions

Of course they would!

That was possibly the most obvious hold I’ve ever seen in my life, bar none. He wrapped him up and then arm-barred him right in front of the refs.

Every single team in the league gets that penalty called there, it was that fucking obvious.

That’s the equivalent of a flagrant foul. You have to make that call.

and weren’t a sloppy team that made penalties almost every play.

I'll give the ol eternal optimist's line

If we could play that terribly, and still be in a position to win it at the end of the game, maybe there’s a future. As long as that future doesn’t include Barron.

What a useless piece of shit Barron is.

How do you target a rookie who missed all of training camp that many times on the final drive of the game?

He made the plays, what problem do you have?

Free even had a false start.

So it was just like Flo never left … except our LT wasn’t getting beat around the corner frequently.

An LT who is an effective pass blocker?

Weird combo.

It felt forced. But maybe it’s because they wanted him to take over Crayton’s role. Either way, those early calls were frustrating.
