A lot has been made of Nolan Ryan's edict on pitch counts. Never mind that it was actually Scott Servais who pushed for this; pitching edicts are more marketable when Nolan Ryan is doing it and backing it with stories based on his ridiculously unique career. But when we look at facts rather than anecdotes, do we see any changes for the Rangers over the three years of pushing pitch counts aside? Not really.

Will Carroll from the intro to today's UTK. He goes into more detail in the article.

Will Carroll is making this up

Nolan is the man and how dare he say anyone else has a good idea in the Rangers organization.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

On a more serious note

The Rangers have used Nolan perfectly to get certain messages across, but the downside seems to be that you have certain people, like the DMN crowd, that really do believe that Nolan is responsible for everything. Its great for the team, but it makes conversations with dumber fans such a beating.

Or people who don't know anything about the organization

And try to make conversation with you by saying “boy, Nolan Ryan really cleaned things up in Texas, didn’t he?”

eh

who cares about those fans? If those fans get giddy because they think Nolan is leading the team to greatness, so what? As long as Chuck Greenberg knows that “this is JD’s baby,” that is all that matters. And the Nolan adoration gives Adam a perfect poison pill to rid this site of crappy readers at any moment; just one of his “Nolan Ryan is overrated” articles is like dumping rat poison on infesting DMN posters

actually

nolan’s “message” was initially met with a lot of resistance within the organization. when you say “the rangers” used nolan to get certain messages across, which rangers were these? maybe the enlightened LSB crowd can set the record straight here and educate all these “dumber fans”.

The Rangers that would use Nolan

to get pitchers to start taking their shape seriously in the offseasons, the Rangers that used Nolan to get Young off his hissy fit, the Rangers that used Nolan to talk with Purke, and apparently the Rangers that used Nolan to put Scott Servais’ plan in place.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I absolutely refuse to seriously talk about the Rangers outside of this forum after today...

I was at my credit union talking to this guy who is always giving me the thumbs up for wearing my Rangers lid…I said, “Hey man, got my tickets to the first round” he goes, “Why?, they’re just going to lose….”

I started giving him all these points backed up by hard evidence….I could tell he wasn’t listening….all he said was that Michael Young was the best player on the team and that CJ WIlson wasn’t really that good…..I told him verbatim, “You’re a pessimistic turd, do me a favor and don’t watch any of the games and don’t ever talk to me about the Rangers again.”

I’m done, I can’t deal with dumbfucks anymore.

pitch counts pushed aside?

i don’t see it. it’s not like our prospects are out there throwing 130+ pitches or anything. i think there’s definitely a change in mindset about going deeper in games rather than being okay with 5 or 6 innings – at least at the major league level – but even that seems to have been set aside this season compared to last.

by SteveP on Sep 17, 2010 10:46 AM CDT reply actions

I hven't seen the numbers

but I’ve gotta think that the starters this year have more innings per start than last year… just because of who the starters are.

by JShoe on Sep 17, 2010 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

i just glanced at the rankings

but looking at the innings per start – they’re just about the same. they’re just ranked lower this year…

by SteveP on Sep 17, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

that's because

there’s a great misrepresentation about what the org was trying to do and is trying to do.

Absolutely, we don’t run our 18, 19, and 20 yr old kids out there for 130+ pitches a game. Nor should we…

That, of course, was never the intention; but, it’s a lot more entertaining (at least the writers/radio/tv guys think so) to say “the Rangers are doing away with pitch counts” than it is to report accurately about what the org is doing.

He talked about this on LSBR

Or should I say, he essentially took a shat on the article that had come out that day talking about Nolan Ryan and pitch counts… He seems to be a very inflammatory writer, likes to take things and blow them up. Im not saying I disagree, just an interesting character.

And I am still pissed about that tweet.

With the tweet, and what you said about his response to your prep email. Seems like he just didn’t really take the whole thing very seriously – who knows whether that’s just him, or because you guys aren’t big and famous yet.

That Keri article the other day was really good

The Rangers are smart and treat each pitcher as an individual.

When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream.

Yeah

and he summarily dismissed it. There was plenty of real merit to that piece, even if he disagreed with the way the Rangers’ plan was portrayed. I don’t like that.

Ok, I don't know what he thinks the link proves,

but it doesn’t prove that it is Scott Servais’ project. Servais does allude to the fact that Ryan was just brought up to speed but that article is somewhat old and Nolan has had plenty of press sound bites talking about what he’s changed.

by ab03 on Sep 17, 2010 12:10 PM CDT reply actions

Scott Servais doesn't set policy within the organization

If Ryan and JD didn’t support, Servais would be responsible for managing a different strategy. That said, for all the hoopla over pitch counts, I don’t really see much a difference. Any variance could easily be attributed to better starters, better defense or better conditioning in an effort to get deeper in games before having to go to the pen.

by twinkilling on Sep 17, 2010 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

The most overstated factor is "no" pitch count.

Every time I hear TAG speculate a pitcher being pulled, they start by looking at a pitch count. And then when I hear about Wash pulling a starter, I hear about “he’d thrown a lot of pitches.” The whole point with Nolan Ryan was is he was effective late, he wasn’t going to get pulled no matter how many pitches he had thrown. If a pitcher has thrown 100 pitches through six innings, it is unlikely he is going to survive an inning or more. The Rangers may say they don’t look at pitch count, but there is no doubt in my mind they do. It just seems like window dressing that pitch count doesn’t matter anymore. It does and to take a pitcher over 120 pitches late in a game, that Ranger will have to be amazingly effective!
