Lueke

Somebody mentioned this in the AM thread that JD had offered to take back Lueke if the Mariners had a problem with it but I didn’t realize this nuance:

But Daniels said the Mariners could have sent Lueke back. “We offered several times to reacquire Lueke in a separate transaction — an offer originally made the same night the deal was announced,” he said in an e-mail to The Times. “That offer stands.”

This is actually kind of funny. Sounds like Mariners President Jack Armstrong wanted Lueke gone and Dr. Z may have fibbed a bit about whether they could return him. Or both the M’s guys are lying to the public and really everybody wanted Lueke. Either way, I think this is less a story about the incompetent M’s FO not knowing about Lueke’s past and more about the M’s trying to save face with their women’s groups by pleading ignorance. And now it seems that they have been caught in a lie. Wonder if there will be any repercussions.

I do think it is interesting that JD tried to reacquire Lueke in a separate transaction (and is still trying to reacquire him). Sounds like both org’s are really high on him – which JD stated multiple times after the trade.

What I don't get

Would it have been really that bad for the M’s to say, “We know about his troubled past but we think he’s learned his lesson and want to give him a second chance?”

I’m thinking that Armstrong really must not have known about this and that’s why the fallout occurred the way it did. Otherwise, this is really a stupid way to handle it, involving way too many complicated lies.

I bet Armstrong found out late

demanded Dr. Z exchange the prospect. Dr. Z (knowing all about Lueke) make a half assed attempt to exchange out Lueke. JD offers some other guys that are less appealing. Dr. Z says JD was being a dick or tells Armstrong the truth that Lueke is good and nobody else would be better so they let the deal stand and call JD a dick.

This situation does not look good for Z

He had multiple avenues to avoid the situation he’s in, but he chose talent over character.

Not that I blame him, I just think he would have been much better off saying they’d looked into the story and don’t think Leuke is a threat to repeat—0-tolerance.\

I bet JD would still take back Leuke—that guy is going to be good.

It's annoying

I was convinced at the beginning of the season that the Angels were a 90 loss team. And they have been playing like they are (or worse) since July. But their June was just so good that it ruins their chances at only getting 72 wins. As bad as they are, I doubt they go 7-21 from here on out.

Oh well, I guess it means a slightly worse draft pick for them. And actually, given that they’ll probably go after Crawford hard, I suppose I want the Angels to finish with one of the 15 best records in the league so that they lose their first rounder…

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Sep 2, 2010 12:28 PM CDT reply actions

and the fun thing

is that that team is really structured to get stuck in a decade of mediocrity. Not really Rangers-like, since their payroll will always be decent, but maybe more Mets-like.

They’ll probably always be considered a contender by the media, but their core is getting older (Torii Hunter will be 35 next year and cost $18 million in ‘11 and ’12; Abreu will probably be there in ’11 and ’12 for $9 million, and he’s old). Santana and Weaver are under control through 2013, but Santana isn’t actually good and he’s expensive. They owe an awful Scott Kazmir $12 million next year.

They’re going to be the Mets. And signing Carl Crawford is perfect for that meme – it will be like the Carlos Beltran signing. (Poor Beltran – talk about the sure way of sending a HOF career into irrelevance, sign with the lesser NY club)

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Sep 2, 2010 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I do think their prospects are better than the Mets just because they don't have Omar Minaya in charge.

I can absolutely see them giving too much to the wrong players in order to cling on to chances and resisting ever actually rebuilding, though.

Related to standings

Boston is 8 games back of the division lead and 7 games back of the WC. I guess it really doesn’t affect how they play the rest of their games but they did just announce that Pedroia is done for the season and having surgery.

So, you have to think Boston knows they’re done – and they could catch 1 of 2 teams to get in.

Was there really ever a good reason to think that the Rangers with a similar lead this late into the season were in jeopardy?

by ab03 on Sep 2, 2010 12:43 PM CDT reply actions

Well

I don’t think the Red Sox are “done” the way that the A’s are. The Red Sox have, I think, 7 games left against the Yankees (and the Yankees also have something like 7 against the Rays). It is conceivable (albeit unprecidented) that the Yankees fall apart.

I kind of altered Jeff Sullivan’s 10% worse WP criteria from the other day to ask “how well would a team have to play to catch up if the team ahead played .500 ball?” Well, the Red Sox would probably have to play .750 ball or so to catch up to the Yankees. But since they’re not independent events (Red Sox playing better over that stretch likely means Yanks play worse), it is possible. The Red Sox, even beat up as tehy are, are capable (albeit unlikely) of going 22-7 over their remaining schedule.

Whereas there is no way a sub-500 A’s team goes 22-8 over their remaining 30 games

since

it’s unprecidented and, to me, highly unlikely that the Yankees fall apart, can we wish a horrible woodworking accident on half the team?

Free Agents

We have a decent number of Type A/B FA’s that we can turn into draft picks (potentially).

Type A
Vlad (opt out)
Darren Oliver (opt out)
Fx2
Cliff Lee

Type B
Molina

Barely missing the cut (somehow) is Rich Harden. Maybe a few good RP appearances might get him in there.

My guess

We’ll get picks for Lee, Fx2 (he won’t accept arbitration, because he’ll want a closing job somewhere) and Molina.

I guess Vlad could end up leaving if some team decides to overpay for him (a possibility).

Lee will go to a top club, so he’ll result in a 1st rounder (supp).
Fx2 will probably go to a lesser club (someone who would want him as closer and wouldn’t care about losing a 2nd round pick), so he’ll result in a 2nd rounder (supp)
Molina will sign somewhere as a type B, so that’ll be a crappy supp pick.

Overall, that will be 2 1sts, 3 supps, and 2 2nds in a deep draft.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Sep 2, 2010 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Molina

I would have thought there would be no way we offer him arb because he would just accept but now it seems like both that he wont’ accept and even if he did, it wouldn’t be terrible.

by ab03 on Sep 2, 2010 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

if he is a type A, then he would almost definitely accept

but who knows, I still hold that catchers are strange beasts, and teams may moneywhip a guy like Molina, not caring about picks, just because catchers are weird.

Given that the club has no options at catcher… if he accepted I wouldn’t be that upset. There aer better ways to spend that money, but the team needs a catcher not named Teagarden…
