Happy birthday, Jeff Russell
Happy birthday to Jeff Russell, who turns 49 today.
Russell was acquired by the Rangers, along with Duane Walker, in exchange for Buddy Bell during the 1985 season, in a deal that devastated me as a 14 year old, since Buddy Bell was my favorite player.
Russell ultimately stepped into the Rangers closer role after Mitch Williams was dealt and did a solid job there, before being dealt, along with Ruben Sierra and Bobby Witt, to Oakland for Jose Canseco.
Russell ended up returning to Texas at the end of his career, spending his last two seasons, in 1995 and 1996, with Texas, and was a member of the Rangers' first playoff team.

My memory is that his entrance music was...
…“Top Gun Anthem” by Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens.
He's not a regular bum, he's a genius bum
Are you basing that response on anything other than your memory?
I readily admit that all I have to go on is my own memory, but I’m pretty certain that several times in 1989 as I sat in Arlington Stadium that song played as Russell made his way to the mound.
He's not a regular bum, he's a genius bum
we had season tickets that year all the way up through 93
i don’t recall hearing that

I sent him an e-mail on the subject just now...
…I’ll try to let you know what response I get.
He's not a regular bum, he's a genius bum
Here is Chuck's response...
“Chad,
His first time late 80’s early 90’s was the Top Gun Anthem.
2nd time through was "Crossfire" by Stevie Ray Vaughn
Thanks for the kind words.
Chuck"

I'm so happy that Chuck Morgan finally will be unleashed
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Chuck is...
…definitely a fan-friendly/customer service-minded type.
And he’s great at what he does IMO.

I don't get it. I could have sworn it was 'Tuff Enuff'
Does no one else remember hearing that all the time when someone came out of the bullpen?

He was the assistant coach of my peewee football team
In like 6th grade (probably 2000ish?) I didn’t really know much about him, I just remember there was an autograph of him in the donut shop we always went to. Plus I would always use him as a reliever to Nolan in the game Batter Up for super nintendo. Love that game.

Damn, 49? Really? Doesn't seem like he should be that old.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I was just thinking the opposite
since it seems like forever since he played, and Tim Wakefield is 44 and I imagine him and someone like Mariano Rivera as entirely post-Russell players (I know they aren’t, but it seems like it)
Go Rice Owls!
No kidding man...
I was pretty little when he was around, but damn, that’s making me feel pretty old.

I remember when the Rangers used to do the Mothers Cookies baseball cards.
He, not Nolan, was the first Ranger to pose with flaming baseball. I’m currently looking for it as we speak….

I too
was 14 that year, I too had Bell as my favorite player (in fact, he was my 1st favorite ranger, to be followed by Sierra, Gonzalez, Teixeira and now Holland – 5 favorite players in 39 years) and I too was devastated.

If I had a gun to my head and had to pick one pitcher to pitch a game to save my life.... I'd pick 1999 Rick Helling.

I never can understand why Hicks didn’t do this, then sell the jerseies…I’d have bought a spare or a replica of Young/Hamilton/Cruz/Lewis.

Man, I don't own any jerseys anymore, just cause I don't ever wear them.
If they did this, I would buy one in a second.

i know right?
its funny how that happens. but all my friends (who are now in the 38-41 range) have shifted from the skinny chic to the curvy (but definitely non-fat) chick. Maybe its because as I get older, i realize girls like the one above look like boys. I didn’t use to care if they had tiny tits. Now its a deal killer. Of course I’m married, so I don’t see anything ever. Just kidding, my wife is smokin hot and likes to get freaky.
