Vacation Destinations/Road Trips:

I’m a huge fan of travel in general, so I’m obviously advocating road trips. Just did the Grand Canyon this summer; 17 hour drive, but you can drive pretty fast in NM and AZ.

In terms of favorite destinations, I’d divide that up into easy trips that take less than four hours to get there and then big-time vacation spots. Easy trips: I love Turner Falls in OK. If you get the camp sites all the way down on the river you can find some amazing secluded sites with ice cold, slow moving pools created by the river. It’s awesome camping. Love the Ozarks in AK as well. Palo Duro Canyon is an awesome place and only 5 or 6 hours away from DFW – some sweet mountain biking if you’re into that kind of thing.

In terms of big vacation type places: I loved Puerto Rico’s beaches and music and ease to get to it. If you ever get the chance to visit the Cinque (Cheen-kway) Terra area of Italy, I strongly suggest doing so. And everyone must visit Yellowstone before they die.

We went last summer

Beautiful. I want to go in the winter. Next year I think we are hitting Rocky Mountain National Park, but we’re definitely going back to Yellowstone, and for a longer time.

I thought Glacier was better than Yellowstone, personally.

Granted I was 9 when we went in 98,

Yellowstone was still pretty much burned to a crisp and too commercial. Old Faithful was legit. Glacier was more peaceful and back to basics.

I lived in Montana the summer after my soph year in college.

Went about a half dozen times, to relax and take it all in. There’s something about watching a bear swipe at fish, with a mountain backdrop, that’’s really nice.

I've only been one one vacation

Unless you count the family exodus to and subsequent return from Utah in the late 90’s as a vacation. Which I don’t, because technically that was a move. Lasted less than two months, but still. We had all our shit, and you don’t have all your shit on a vacation. I think that’s some sort of vacation rule. If it’s not, it should be.

Anyway, my only vacation was to south Florida for Christmas 2008. I was doing cannonballs in a back patio pool on Christmas day, and dipping my toes in the Gulf of Mexico the next.

Of course, if you tried that now, you’d prolly wind up with oil all over your toes, but considering the calendar dates I always thought that was pretty fucking cool. It was small sample size, but that part of Florida impressed me, honestly.

If I ever get filthy rich, I think I’m gonna spend my summers in the great northwest, and winter in Florida.

We're frugal (no, wait...cheap) people but travel is something we have always

made it a point to do at least once or twice a year….we’ve taken a few big vacations but some of our favorite trips have just been short, weekend or 3-4 day trips to Arkansas, Houston, camping, etc.

I’ve come to the conclusion that if you have kids, they don’t care where we go as long as there is a pool at the hotel……

I had the SF Giants playing Tampa in the World Series

before the season so I’ll stick with the Giants for now.

Road trips…They became greatness after going to college and not being a child that traveled with my parents. Loved my parents dearly but I like being in control of my own destiny as far as destination, type of hotel, how fast we’re driving…whether or not I can get a large soft drink instead of a small soft drink etc. . To this day, I get large soft drinks because my parents would always make me get small drinks when I was younger.

When at Tech, I loved going to Riudoso & Taos or down to Austin when Tech played the Longhorns. We’d usually play them around Halloween Weekend and that place with those fan-bases combined would rock.

As an adult…I think Lake Tahoe is the most beautiful place I’ve been to in the continiental US. I love San Francisco and San Diego as well. Don’t you dare underrate Vancouver either. Pure joy for me is getting my drink on and gambling my ass off in Las Vegas…Mirage, Mandalay Bay, Caesar’s, Wynne…it doesn’t matter. I can sit in a sports book for 10 hours straight and be in heaven.

To get my baseball on…Spring Training every year. There’s now a good hotel (Residence Inn) that’s maybe a 1/4 mile from the stadium in Surprise. Gotta go whenever you can.

Watching the Rangers in foreign ports is also a lot of fun. Been to Fenway, Wrigley, the Old Yankee Stadium, New Comiskey, Turner Field, Camden Yards, The Juice Box in Houston, Dodger Stadium, Safeco….loved them all but Wrigley rates as 1A.

I’m sure there’s others too, but those were the first that came to mind.

I’m kind of shocked some moron hasn’t remade either of those two. Maybe there’s an “unwritten law” about certain remakes.

Asking if people believe in UFOs is an inherently silly quesiton to me...

…..because have you ever seen anything floating in the air at all that you didn’t know what it was? Then you have seen an unidentified flying object. Not trying to rag on you – it’s extremely common to use the term UFO when they really mean “alien spacecraft” or something.

There is this equation this physicist has developed that has not been solved. I think the solution is “N,” being the number of galactic civilizations that have developed the technology necessary for spaceflight – and thus, any civilization that technically could come visit. Has a lot of factors, but the galaxy being so big that it’s pretty much impossible for the answer to be 1 (us).

by FuturePants on Sep 2, 2010 9:47 AM CDT reply actions

There's quite a large difference between

A civilization capable of spaceflight and one that could travel the distances needed to come hang out in our atmosphere.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Sep 2, 2010 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Totally.

I think the equation is simply civilizations capable of leaving their own planet for deep space. We wouldn’t get to the next star, even, but we are capable of leaving earth.

by FuturePants on Sep 2, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm taking a graduate genetics course right now

And one of our assignments involved looking at error rates in DNA replications in humans. On average, each person has ~70 new mutations in their genome. When the population of the world is taken into account, it quickly becomes obvious that the entire human genome has been mutated multiple times over just from the current population (not including the past). That’s kind of weird to think about.

It lead me to another thought…if we ever do get to the point where we’re inhabiting other planets, how long will it take for selection to basically turn the inhabitants into a different species?

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Sep 2, 2010 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions

There is already essentially different species here on earth.

An ex girlfriend of mine’s sister is a cardiologist. She did this study of these Tibetian people high up in the Himalayas. Anyways, if you or I go up and start living in extremely high altitudes where these people live, like 30% of us develop a really specific heart valve defect. If we then go back to lower altitudes, it goes away.

Anyways, zero% of the people that are native to the area have this problem, even a little. Evolution/mutation at work.

by FuturePants on Sep 2, 2010 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

That's pretty interesting

Though I’m wondering if it’s a valve or something like a patent foramen ovale. Perhaps there’s not enough pressure in the lungs to deal with inefficient pulmonary valves?

Anyways, that’s just selection removing one set of genes. With another planet bringing entirely different environments, who knows what extreme selective pressures and a mutation rate that high could result in? How many generations would it take? 5? 3?

JD: Eddie Guardado.

I hated Fallout 3 the first time through.

Put it back in last week and am enjoying it MUCH more. Stuff like: instead of spreading out the points, build up a few categories to max. So, instead of having so-so energy, small arms, and big guns, my small guns are 100, big guns are like 15, energy is now somewhere around 30. By putting all my points into small guns from the beginning, I wasn’t so helpless the first few levels.

That's not fail-safe though

Unless your wallet is really compacted in there, I’d bet that a good pickpocketing duo or an expert pickpocketer could still get you.

by LiamP on Sep 2, 2010 2:31 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Has anyone here been a victim of pickpocketing?

It’s so weird to me how that practice works. your wallet is touching your ass.. how do you not feel something coming out from under your ass?

by oc on Sep 2, 2010 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I was pickpocketed in London Heathrow Airport in May 2005.

It’s easier than you think, especially when you are in a relatively confined space or surrounded by people and you expect some form of physical contact.

It’s also not like you think about your wallet every single second it’s in your pocket or even notice that it’s there.

i still don't get it

I usually don’t tuck my shirt in, and most my shirts hang past the top of my back pocket. Figuring most guys wear their shirts like I do, that means a pickpocketer has to lift your shirt to some extent and still be able to reach down into that back pocket.

how do you not feel that? weird.

Drove up from Seattle to Alaska a couple summers ago

That was just an awesome drive. We giggled when we found “Gobblers Knob” on a map and had to drive up there, north of the Arctic Circle. Totally weird and awesome- we were playing tennis in the road at 2am. It was the third year of doing a road trip with a bunch of college buddies, and we learned an important lesson. Take multiple cars. It was great the first couple times having 3 cars and 10 or 12 people, everyone continually rotating between cars. But over a couple weeks, there WILL be someone you want to kill, and one car pretty much ends up being a disaster.

But yeah, totally impossible for road trips to be overrated.

Mescalito is still my fave, but the new one, Junky Star, is much better than his second album. Mescalito just sounds dusty and dirty, great gritty sound and sound’s like he’s singing directly from his soul about his early hardships.

I've only heard brief snippets from Junky Star but I agree 100% with you on Mescalito v. Roadhouse Sun

Mescalito is incredible, much better than Roadhouse Sun. That’s less a criticism of the second album, because it is very good, than it is praise for the first one.

Dusty, dirty, and gritty is pretty much the description I use of that album. Take the quietest, most out-of-the-way, windswept piece of West Texas you can find, and Mescalito is that piece of land turned into an album. It’s just incredible.

He’s very under-rated in the mainstream as a writer, not many people in today’s music that blow me away lyrically, but he does.

Take all the elements of Commando.

Add in a super bad ass, technologically superior alien, 15 more roided up weirdos, more explosions, more guns, more awesomeness and some of the best oneliners to come out of every movie, and you end up with Predator.

Ah, road trips...

My family was pretty much built on road trips. Figured road trips were more effective for seeing a wider expanse of the country.

Favorite one we did…summer of 2006, we decided to do a road trip of pretty much nothing but seeing various Halls of Fame. Started with Country Music in Nashville, did Pro Football, Rock and Roll, Boxing, Tennis, America’s Cup, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Baseball, Dirt Motorsports, the NCAA Hall of Champions, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway HOF, Bowling (while it was still in St. Louis), Wrestling (Olympic-style), Gymnastics, Cowboy, and Softball.

In 15 days.

That was a ton of fun just for the other stuff we picked up along the way. Like Chittenango, New York (birthplace of L. Frank Baum; we have a picture of us in front of Auntie Em’s Place next to a construction crew pouring yellow cement to be scored off to be the “yellow brick road”). And the “Twist O’ The Mist” soft-serve ice cream stand and wifi hotspot in Niagara Falls.

Best part of all: the only time anyone said “Are we there yet?” was at 11 pm on the longest day of travel (around mile 500 of 571 in the day…and we did Soccer, Baseball, and Dirt Motorsports that day, as well).

by ftwdrummer on Sep 2, 2010 2:37 PM CDT reply actions

I'd love to see the country music Hall of Fame

I think my family is doing our next reunion in Nashville late in 2011. Perhaps I can check it out.

If nothing else, for the fact that it’s one of the few places outside of Texas where you don’t have to explain where Fort Worth is (thanks, WBAP).

There’s some cool stuff there…some nice references to how country influences other genres…to be perfectly frank, I learned more about the origins of Rock and Roll from the Country HOF than I did from the Rock and Roll HOF.

pretty good for an off day

- Phillies are going to the WS again. Reds, Braves, and Padres are not on their level.

- I have a fear of water. Never learned to swim as a kid. It seems to get worse as I get older.

- Nothing beats a trip to Vegas. (nothing that I’ve ever done, anyway)

- I don’t think I’ve ever watched a Hitchcock movie from start to finish. So if you count “Psycho” or “Rear Window” as classics, then I guess I’m way behind.

The Derweze area is rich in natural gas. While drilling in 1971 geologists accidentally found an underground cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of about 70 meters. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided to burn the gas. Geologists had hoped the fire would go out in a few days but it has been burning ever since.

I just polished off this mound of deliciousness. It was pretty amazing at one of K.C.‘s top bbq joints. The sauce was a little sweet but tangy and just right imo. I'm on the fence about Josey as a bit.

Ok. I'm going OT here and am looking for some help in regards to my stocks.

I receive an amount of restricted stock units every year from my company. They have a vesting period of three years, so the stocks I received in ’07 just vested at the beginning of the month.

My question is, when they gave me the RS units in ’07, it was 100 shares and has always shown as 100 shares since then. Yet, when the shares vested and were put into my portfolio at the beginning of the month, I only have 67 shares. Where did my 33 other shares go? Is that like a juice? Who would I contact about that?

I am some what familiar with stocks/options/401k as I have dabbled in mine for years now and do pretty well. This is just my first time with Restricted Stock Units and I’m wondering why I didn’t receive the full 100 shares vested in to my account.
