I really want to talk about this all day

This whole thing with the Mariners is hilarious. Dr. Z might be a stats genius, but he is severely lacking in the other aspects of being a GM.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Me neither, I'm just pretty much going off of what everyone has said about him

He definitely seems stats oriented, but that doesn’t seem to necessarily be a good thing with him.

Differentiating between the GM and the Front Office.
He definitely seems stats oriented

Zoinks has a lengthy scouting background. By all accounts, he leans heavily towards traditional methods of talent evaluation.

Tony Blengino is the stats person in that FO.

Drafting

Dr. Zoinks made a name for himself with the drafting he did for the Brewers. It may not be stats, but Zoinks seems to have shades of Paul DePodesta in that he is well regarded for something he does very well, yet has trouble with handling the job of GM (mostly the relationships he has to have with others).

Lack of due diligence

He should be fired for a lack of due diligence. It is unbelievable that no one would do a google or facebook search on a prospect before a trade. Moreover, given that he knew of off the field issues is even more egregious.

I just got done reading through all of the Cameron "Lets talk about why I failed" stuff

over at fangraphs. I’m glad he learned so very little from the article.

Feel like it is open season to harass Cameron over every single Dr. Z screw up, including this one.

by ab03 on Sep 2, 2010 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

if Cameron had said “Look, at the time we made the list, we were trying to make a statement about the value of a good front office with resources, and we took a gamble that Z was really the best example of that. In hindsight, it is clear that it was just too early to make such a judgment, and while we stand by our decision to allow the M’s front office to boost their ranking, we didn’t properly take the uncertainty of his short tenure into account”

Instead, he said “I’ll answer questions,” then picked a few bad examples to strawman all the decent criticism in an attempt to make anyone who disagrees with him look like stubborn fools who just don’t get it.

Backed up? No not backed up infact it says in the article that the Rangers GM could be the one lieing also he said Lueke was acquitted infact i believe more that the Rangers GM was lieing you know why? When asked if he told Z that if he knew Lueke plead no contest he told them no comment.

This isn’t meant to incite any trolling or anything. I just think its funny that there are some fans out there that think that Z is still telling the truth about this when everything about the situation pretty clearly shows he wasn’t.

Actually

the second one is more of an indicator of how bad a GM Ruben Amaro is

and as for Gutz we’ll see, one amazing year (mostly propped up by ridiculous D) sandwiched in between 2 solid years…also, .306 wOBA in 2008, and then a .301 this year……

Don't forget that he pulled Vargas and Chavez out of that deal.

Plus some solid minor league depth. All for what was left of J.J. Putz, Sean Green, and Jeremy Reed.

And Gutierrez still has a chance to become respectable offensively. He showed early flashes of it this year. I’m not sure why he’s struggling now.

You're right that the jury is still out.

He had a solid plan this year, and that plan didn’t work out the way he wanted it to. It was the exact opposite result last year (basically same plan, vastly different result). Here's a question: does this cost Jack Z his job?

First he fires and then throws under the bus the one guy in the Mariners organization who has the most knowledge about the Lueke situation. That proceeds to come back and bite him as Adair starts telling his side to the media.

Now he’s throwing another GM under the bus.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are probably still pissed about his handling of the Lee trade.

From Stark
Cliff dwelling: One baseball man who goes back years with Cliff Lee has zero doubt that no matter how upbeat the Rangers may say they are about re-signing Lee, he will be a Yankee this winter once the free-agent fine print is written.

And why is that, you ask? Not because Lee has always wanted to live on the Upper East Side or because he’s a big fan of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s because the Yankees are, obviously, the best bet to outbid the rest of civilization.

“Cliff,” our source said, “would go to Siberia if they offered him the biggest contract.”

Lee has paid his dues and should expect a serious contract.

While I am sure that the Rangers will make a serious offer, if the Yankees really want him they are going to get him assuming that money will be deciding factor. And if that happens you can only move on and look elsewhere.
