Good luck, Roy!

SAT -
City hosts Chelsea at dawn - I don't mind a legit defeat, pls no gift goals. [yay!]
Sunderland AT Liverpool - stout test, Sunderland are no pushovers. [check]
West Ham gets fed to Spurs - a miracle would be nice here. [miracle!]
West Brom AT Arsenal - cake walk [opportunity missed, choke?]
Inter has a chance to bury AS Roma today, too.
SUN -
ManU goes to Notlob - seems easy enough
Midweek will see tons of Eufa action. ManU @ Valencia seems like a good watch. Rec this up.

There are only ten games

You can’t give all of them a little quip?

No love for Everton trying to pull itself out of the hole? Blackburn comprising a real test to see how Blackpool as a home side stands? While I agree no one cares about Stoke…I mean geez shroom, spread the love.

But I do appreciate the new thread. The last one was getting a little long in the tooth so I will rec for you even though you ignored my team.

no kidding...what a Real elitist that guy is (see what I did there?)

Also, Wolverhampton is looking to turn things around with a win at home against Midlands rival Aston Villa. It’s a game that Wolves ought to go out and try to win, so hopefully they’ll be a bit more offensive minded. Kevin Doyle scored a couple in their Carling Cup win over Notts County, and I’m expecting him to really bring it on Sunday.

Sunday: Stoke City goes Tyneside.

Still on a high after the victory over Chelsea. Sure, they played their scrubs, but I’m claiming victory, bitches.

City - Chelsea HT - 45 mins from a point! heh

Silva has lost the ball about 5 times with weak first touches – counter to his rep. I think Milner is getting sick of playing on LW. There’s a quote in the paper every week about how much he loves playing in the middle. Boyota is doing fine at RB so far. Ramires has looked weak in the middle to me for Chelsea – I’m glad there’s at least one Chelsea guy who isn’t a world-beater. Zabba’s a bench defender – Ivanovich’s header off the crossbar shows why. Boateng is on the bench, wonder if we’ll see him in the 2nd half. Adam Johnson could come in for either Milner or Silva – guessing for Milner. Adebayour might come on late if we go down. Hope any goals that get scored are righteous.

A few thoughts:

- Liverpool actually looked good- too bad it was only for the last 10-15 minutes of the match.

- Poulsen may be the worst player to wear a Liverpool shirt since Djimi Traore.

United was Pique's former club

He begged SAF to let him go to Barca because he was behind Rio and Vidic in the United pecking order and he wanted to start (going back home obviously was a big factor too). SAF let him leave and now United is left with an Irishman who has forgotten how to defend.

I don't know if Partizan Belgrade has anything, but

today’s lineup scares me even more than Saturday’s. You have a dicey keeper, Djourou/Squillaci, Denilson/Song/Wilshire in midfield and no Nasri. He is on the bench, but so is Henri Lansbury.

by Brett Perryman on Sep 28, 2010 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Partizan

I watched a bit of them in the qualifying rounds- Cleo is a fairly dangerous striker, but other than that, Arsenal should handle them without too much trouble.

Shakhtar Donetsk, OTOH, could be a bit trickier. They won the UEFA Cup/Europa League a couple years back, and much of that team is still in place. I don’t know if Arsenal have any trouble defending free kicks; if so, watch out for Darijo Srna, as he’s one of the best at taking them. Hell, watch out for Srna, period- he’s one of the best offensive right backs in football.

Okay, so I feel like talking about FIFA 11 on PC

Apparently, it’s basically the FIFA 10 gameplay-wise they produced for next-gen (but didn’t port to PC) with some new rosters and menus, but I’m stunned at the upgrade from PES 2010. In that game, on the single-player mode, the AI was quite positively terrible, especially the forwards who often went solo in charging at four-man defences. As a central midfielder, I facepalmed every time this occurred (which was at least ten times a game). Similarly, they also tried running to the corner, ignoring wingers. Now, I played a BAP match using Carrick (since I’d probably consider that my natural position, as a guy who can’t run all too fast, tackle or play a long pass with any technique and who gets by largely through positioning and distribution), and there was Rooney and Berbatov, holding the ball up, moving in space, linking with midfielders. Amazing.

PES was pretty fun, and I’m glad it actually ‘let’ me run it at max detail (unlike FIFA, which doesn’t provide any option for setting detail levels and consequently makes the game look like something out of 2005 on my mediocre rig), but there was absolutely no meaningful off-ball movement, and there was absolutely no control for through passes.

You mean 360/PS3 version of FIFA 10.

Blue Mooners were hoping for Arsenal and ManU to NOT win ...

and for City to actually score goals at home and win, thus moving us up the table 2 weekends in a row. Too bad the Spurs won, woulda been the cherry on top had they not.

Don't worry, Arsenal will lose tomorrow.

No Cesc, Fabianski in goal… It’s going to be a long day.

Drogba against Squillaci/Koshschschschscelny/Traore would be hilarious.

Vermaelen is still out.

Traore is at Juventus. Yeah, we’re going to get our share of Drogba rapes tomorrow.

Sounds about right.

Denilson’s so poor. It’s a shame Diaby got hurt when he did, because he actually looked pretty good for France (one of the only ones that did) during the WC.

Early in the season and the more points Chelsea drop the better.

As it is, I don’t see anyone mounting a serious challenge to them this year.

Holy fuck, John Carew is completely useless.

I just watched a replay of Spurs-Villa. Heskey has been amazing, though. Currently, I don’t see how Stephen Ireland can start on that team, they need two holding central midfielders to maximize everyone up front.

And well…Rafael Van der Vaart is good at football.

Dreadful – bleh. I predict City ends the game with 10 men, maybe even 9 – holding so many halftime yellow cards. This has upset draw/loss written all over it. Man we suck at finishing scoring chances.

Manchester City midfielder Nigel De Jong has been dropped from the Holland squad as punishment for his tackle which broke Hatem Ben Arfa’s leg yesterday.

Thinking about the NDJ timeline ...

last March is when the ultra-violence really started against Stuart Holden in the USA friendly. At the time, NDJ’s reaction was just a shrug – that’s football. His reaction really worried me back when the first incident occurred because it wasn’t “just football” – it was criminal. But, oddly, this is about the time his overall play really started improving. By the summer he had really cut down on the needless throwins given up, the needless fouls committed in dangerous areas and the inept vision and passing exhibitions in midfield. Heck, he was a rock for Holland at the WC – and for City since the new season started. But now it appears that the dude has cut ineptness from his game only to replace it with random acts of ultraviolence. One of these days lets hope ALL the stupid leaves his body.

Having said all that tho’, I still think there was an element of bad luck in this latest incident that is being ignored in favor of piling on NDJ for the two really really ugly earlier incidents. I think I’m still in the same mind as I was post Xabi-ninjakick – just hoping never to see a 100% dirty act from him again, especially since he’s become a quality 2-way MFer. Hope he realizes that he’s on a career-molding roll of form that can only be side-tracked by his tendency to overdo the enforcer attitude.

NDJ in the World Cup

The karate kick wasn’t his only incident during the Cup. He was out of control in the group stages as well. He picked up a yellow against Denmark for a lunging two-footed studs up tackle very similar to the one on Holden. I think many people didn’t really notice his dangerous plays until the final because he was slightly overshadowed by Van Bommell’s thuggery. My guess is that he will continue to keep this up, unfortunately until he is properly punished. It’s simply who he is as a player.

Not mediocre. Right about average

It’s simply who he is as a player.

I think I might echo that sentiment had he not shown improvement in other areas of his game. Drastic improvement in a short period of time. Shows he’s capable of changing, IMO. Still holding out hope.

These days, I’m more worried about Mancini effing with Adam Johnson’s head than I am losing NDJ to the soccer penitentiary.

They updated the quote sprite has above with a comment from van Marwijk
Nigel de Jong has been dropped from the Netherlands squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers, with Oranje boss Bert van Marwijk claiming he had “no option” after the Manchester City midfielder’s “wild and unnecessary” leg-breaking challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa.

Five or six Premier League coaches are giggling at this notion.

by Brett Perryman on Oct 4, 2010 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions

True

That’s one reason why I respect Roberto Martinez. His squad is in a perennial relegation battle, but he doesn’t succumb to the brutal tactics of the Wolverhamptons of the world. I liked Hughton’s suggestion that he should be suspended for as long as Ben Arfa is out of commission.

Mind you, I’ve got no problem with hard tackling and I think effective defensive midfield play is one of the most beautiful aspects of the game. I love watching the great practitioners of the art, the Mascheranos, Makeleles, Silvas and Busquets of the world, none of whom have any sort of reputation for dirty play. What I can’t stand for are the lunging, studs-up attacks that de Jong specializes in and that players like Henry and Shawcross have committed.

Awesome

I heard about that being filmed last week. That was Ian McCulloch (of Echo & the Bunnymen) in the green jacket & sunglasses- also noticed Stephen Graham (Billy Bremner in The Damned United & Al Capone on Boardwalk Empire) towards the end of the video.

Also, some positive developments today- just posted on the official team website:

“The Board of Directors have received two excellent financial offers to buy the Club that would repay all its long-term debt. A Board meeting was called today to review these bids and approve a sale. Shortly prior to the meeting, the owners – Tom Hicks and George Gillett – sought to remove Managing Director Christian Purslow and Commercial Director Ian Ayre from the Board, seeking to replace them with Mack Hicks and Lori Kay McCutcheon. This matter is now subject to legal review and a further announcement will be made in due course.”

I’m hearing that one of those offers was from New England Sports Ventures, the parent company of the Red Sox.

by RCCook on Oct 5, 2010 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

LIVERPOOL SOLD!!!!!

The three other members of the board- Ayre, Purslow, and Broughton- have accepted the bid from New England Sports Ventures, subject, of course, to a legal challenge by Hicks and Gillett.

If the sale goes through, the Red Sox will own Liverpool FC, and those two jackasses won’t see a dime of profit on their “investment.” I can’t believe I’m rooting for the Red Sox to succeed in anything, but go, John Henry! :)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

by rentz on Oct 6, 2010 7:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I fully expect it will be

It’s not like Hicks has a history of going quietly.

The good thing is that the Royal Bank of Scotland, Hicks & Gillett’s main creditor, has already approved the sale. The sticking point with H&G is that they’re not getting any profit out of it- NESV is pledging £240 million to clear the debts, and another £60 million towards investments in the club, for a total sale price of £300 million. That’s less than half of what H&G were seeking for the club.

But you know what? Fuck ‘em. I’d love nothing more than to see Hicks living in a cardboard box in five years.

by RCCook on Oct 6, 2010 7:49 AM CDT up reply actions

they were never going to get what they were asking

from what i’ve read it sounds like gillette wants out, hicks wants to stay and rbs wants to take the team sell it and get it’s money. it sounds like banks have more power there than they do here, so this might go quicker.

by rentz on Oct 6, 2010 8:05 AM CDT up reply actions

They have like 9 days to complete the sale before RBS calls in their loans and can put the club in administration.

I know John Henry looks like Jesus compared to Hicks, but I doubt this allows them the extra funds needed to be competitive again.

by LiamP on Oct 6, 2010 9:48 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

yeah, they wont be flush with cash

he’s not rich enough to compete with the sheik or ambromovich. from reading at epltalk it sounds like the best bet would be that he can help to stabilize things but dont expect big signings.

I dont think the fans there will be overly happy with more “yanks” coming in

by rentz on Oct 6, 2010 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

A lot of them aren't

There’s a ton of folks over at Red & White Kop who are pissed about another “bunch of Yanks” buying the club.

Honestly, I could care less where the owners are from, as long as they run the club responsibly, give the manager the money to put a competitive team on the field, and respect the fans and traditions of the club. Henry’s done a pretty good job of that with the Red Sox, so I’m guardedly optimistic at the moment.

The one thing I did notice wasn’t mentioned in the deal was a new stadium, so I guess things are still in “wait and see” mode on that.
