Friday a.m. Rangers things
Well, that was a bang-up way to start off what we are hoping is the division-clinching series against the A's. The Rangers were one-hit by Dallas Braden and Brad Ziegler, and fell, 5-0. They've scored 7 runs in their last 5 games.
Anthony Andro's game story talks about the offensive slump that has resulted in the Rangers' magic number descending much more slowly than had been hoped.
T.R. Sullivan's game story has quotes from Michael Young, whom he said "snapped" responses about not wanting to waste his time thinking about the Rangers slump and the Rangers just needing to hit better.
Evan Grant says that the Rangers' first base situation is still unsettled with the playoffs less than two weeks away. Grant suggests that Chris Davis could end up displacing the slumping Mitch Moreland or the awful-since-being-acquired Jorge Cantu as one of the team's post-season first base options.
Darren O'Day is available again after being sidelined by back problems that, he says, were caused by his side-arming delivery.
Sullivan has an update on Josh Hamilton's status, and talks about Taylor Teagarden getting the start yesterday, only his second since being called up in the September roster expansion.
Jeff Wilson writes that Neftali Feliz has had a special rookie season as the Rangers' closer.
Sullivan has a piece on the top 10 series in Rangers history.
Gil Lebreton has a column on the Rangers' slow march towards clinching the division.

I understand small sample sizes and all
But
Moreland 660 OPS in Sept (775 in August)
Treanor 486 OPS in Sept (267 in August) in 15 AB’s
Cantu 464 OPS in Sept (537 in August)
Molina 385 OPS in Sept (600 in August)
The Rangers might as well at least give Teagarden and Davis a few extra games to check them out. No chance Cantu makes this team.
You can add
Young 558 OPS in Sept (676 in Aug)
Team would be better with Blanco at 3B.

B/w Elvis (a defensive wiz, at a position with low offensive expectation) v. MY (a statue at 3b)
Actually
if you believe the defensive stats, Elvis is roughly replacement level defensively.
Personally, I think the defensive stats are still not real accurate, and may not be anymore accurate than the eyeball test yet.

I'm not a huge fan, but I think they have value
Elvis hasn’t made the spectacular plays this year that he made last year, which might account for his league average UZR, but I think it’s safe to say his range hasn’t decreased, and he’s still one of the better SS’s in the league.
That should be
average instead of replacement level.

They did trust their formulas too much
But their default models were increasingly obsolete (see, RBI, runs, BA, etc.) and any attempts to introduce new models that accounted for reverse incentivization and/or soft information were turned away (speaking generally here).
I see what you’re saying though. I just think it’s interesting for a former finance attorney (Isn’t he?) to say that he can’t think of any other field where people stick their fingers in their ears and go “LALALALA” when new, valuable information is being presented to them.
When I listen to ESPN Radio I get goosebumps and shivers because of the fear defendants caused me.
Ah.
You’re talking about different models than I am. I was referring more to the formulas for how much risk could be taken on and how to spread it out compared to the incentive structures for the executives/employees of the companies in determining what the goals should be in the first place.

Yes, the "no other field" claim is patently wrong
Most fields have a conventional wisdom that is reflexively resistant to new approaches. Even scientific and academic fields, which also have systems for rewarding innovative perspectives, will only accommodate certain kinds and degrees of challenge to the prevailing logics.
Well, at least at first.
But that’s because they’re supposed to be skeptical.
There are certain examples of science being too critical/disbelieving in the past 50 years, but most of the time the process is Crazy Idea with minimal evidence → Roundly criticized → More evidence presented → Much debate and commentary → Even more evidence → Tipping point.

I think that is a good description of the process for the sciences.
In the humanities, you can see truly astonishing resistance for a generation or more.
Interesting.
Maybe it’s because it’s harder to accumulate evidence?
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
by GhettoBear04 on Sep 24, 2010 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions
That is certainly part of it.
It’s also more difficult to mobilize large amounts of evidence in a way that fits the expectations of journal editors and peer reviewers. Using the basic methods for presenting large amounts of data, i.e. charts and statistics, can get your work described as too social scientific.
There is also generally greater likelihood for taste and politics to come into play.
Scientists are trained to objectively evaluate evidence
If sufficient evidence is presented to them, they will believe. In other fields, people tend to have fixed beliefs and are not open to others’ points of view.
"What ... 92 miles per hour?" Feldman scoffed. "That's not gas. Feliz throws gas."

by NorCalRangersFan on Sep 24, 2010 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, scientists do have fairly fixed beliefs about standards of evidence and research,
but that’s part of what enables the relative openness to others’ points of view within the those broad parameters.
I’d also say that openness to others’ arguments and evidence and critical reappraisal of your own is something that you have to work at, lifelong. Science does seem to build strong habits of mind that help with this, and I think it has somewhat stronger sanctions for people who get lazy about it.
As a former scientist
I can tell you that Science is all about being wrong. And telling other people that they are wrong. and proving it. Every graduate student, post doc, scientist, researcher, whatever, who is involved in the world of science and acedemia would like nothing more than to prove an existing theory incorrect. The more high profile the theory, the bigger the reputation for debunking it.
But its in that proof that scientists must adhere to. You come up with a brilliant idea, something that can change the world, but now you have to make it work. You have to prove that its right (or at least prove that it isn’t wrong) before you can get recognition.
That’s why those people who do the perpetual motion machines get laughed at, because they can’t make it work. Same with Cold Fusion, etc. Its not that scientists don’t want them to work, its that they just don’t.

Google is relatively useless for archival research in a field like history
Electronic databases of primary source material are becoming more accessible, but sometimes you have to go to a library or museum and hunker down with paper, often with significant restrictions on how you handle it.
And if the matter was already published in a peer reviewed journal with persuasive argumentation and evidence, then there would be little need to do the research in the first place.

yeah
which is why Borbon sat last night so we could play David Murphy in centerfield.
(ron washington fuckup.)
Basically he had his second worst possible defensive outfield out there behind a pitcher who forces batters to put the ball in play. genius. (the only worse one would involve the use of Guerrero. Its like Washington thinks, “Lee is pitching, therefore I can fuck around with the defense all I want because he doesn’t need good defense to win”. When the reality is that he’s more dependent on his defense than CJ is.
And it turned out that it didn’t matter what offensive players we had out there, every line drive was going to be hit directly at a fielder.

I think the main reason they switched (besides the people getting hurt) was the LSU Baseball team that year...
it was the “Gorilla Ball” year….everyone on their team had 20 bombs and I think Larson had around 45 or something crazy after hitting 5 or 6 at Blinn JC the year before (hmmm)….we played them in their tourney and Larson hit one off the end of the bat down the right field line (he was right handed)..after playing against him for 2 years in JC and then that year when he was with LSU I was convinced that he was on steroids, but maybe it was the bat…maybe both.

I know it's old and annoying
But is there a reason why the team can’t hit LHP? Isn’t it traditionally easier to hit a lefty if you bat right handed? When I played (only through 8th grade, not bragging), I always felt more comfortable when a righty was pitching (I hit lefty).
Fuck Arias

Well...
1B has not hit LHP all year (though they really haven’t hit RHP, either).
C hasn’t hit shit
CF has been lefty all year
LF has been lefty all year
SS has not been a premium hitting position
So you really only have RF, 2B, 3B, and DH hitting LHP… and they all can hit RHP, too.
The team OPS
vs. LH starters: .720
vs. RH starters: .766
This is not too different from the Amer. League overall:
vs. LH starters: .717
vs. RH starters: .743
The real story seems to be the Rangers hit righties much better than most teams, not that they can’t hit lefties. Hamilton’s 1.175 OPS against righties has a lot to do with that.
When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream.

OT: more strikeouts than BA points
credit to baseball reference for this…
Mark reynolds is not very good…
he has struck out 206 times. his batting average is .200. that’s worse than mcguire’s final season. arizona is completely 100% out of the race. they need to bench the guy.
he started out this month hitting .217, after last night’s 0 for 5 he’s gotta be done for the year right? they won’t let him get below .200 will they? he’s 4 for 54 on the month!
other than pitchers, no regular player has ever struck out more than their batting average points.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/blog/archives/8366
though chris davis has struck out 34 times with a .204 batting average, he was in AAA for most of the season, i’m sure there’s a possibility that he would have straightened out a little bit given a whole season.
not trying to say anything here other than wow, that mark reynolds guy is awful.
"Please don't hand Jim Knox your children."

Good grief that is terrible...I had no idea he was so bad this year.
"Sometimes you just want to sit back and watch somebody throw 100." - Jeff Passan on Neftali Feliz
"Baseball's all that's real" - JB
Why Mark Reynolds is much better than Chris Davis
he walks.
If a player can put up an OBP of .320 or .330, as Reynolds does, it still isn’t very good, but it isn’t so epically bad that I’ll dismiss him as awful.
However, if you struggle to get your OBP over .300, then you start having issues.
I’ll give Mark Reynolds a pass for all his Ks because he walks. He may not hit singles, but he gets on base somehow.
If Chris Davis could learn to walk without sacrificing his power, he could be Mark Reynolds. Right now, he only wishes he could be as productive a hitter.
Go Rice Owls!
This is quote OT.
But, I love the one where Homer bets her that she can’t throw a cat over the house.

I know it's a short sample, but Cramer's numbers against righthanders is much better than leftys
VS. LEFT: .357 / VS. RIGHT: .160 so wash will probably have the same right handed lineup in tonight, of course this is a 2 game sample but it is against 2 very good hitting teams. also i am not sure what Cramers minor league numbers were.
