Rangers sign Mark Prior

Show_image_3000_php_medium Mark Prior is back and well put together. After pitching well for the Orange County Flyers of the independent Golden Baseball league, (home of my Tucson Toros) he signed a minor league deal for the Texas Rangers.

Now before Mr. Ranger fan starts hopping up and down in delight there is something that he should know.

Its past the deadline for players to be eligible for playoff rosters.

This is obviously a move for 2011 and beyond. Prior is 30 years old and if healthy has a lot of baseball left in him. If you look at his numbers in independent ball, he pitched 9 games, 11 innings, striking out 22 batters and not allowing a single run. He exhibited a 92 mph fastball and a sharp breaking ball as well.

The Rangers clearly signed Mark Prior to be a reliever for them next year. He'll be in triple-A Oklahoma City for the rest of the season and then likely report to Surprise, AZ for instructional league baseball.

I guess its the bigs compared to independent leagues

I don’t really have a feeling one way or the other, other then the fact its good we aren’t depending on catching lightening in a bottle as a mechanism for success and its just a flyer on a high talent guy

Here’s hoping we get something out of it, but I’m betting its just a chance to see him a little bit.

What do voluntary mean?

The dude abides.....

Why would anyone vote

“Never liked him”?

I would vote “I hate Dusty Baker because of him”

i was getting my hopes up

I really wanted this indie league pitcher on the Ranger playoff roster. Dammit. Seriously, though…he’s probably better than Rich Harden.

Here's to you, maxzoran.

And to all the trolls that gave you a hard time about making a fanpost about Mark Prior, take that.

maxzoran is probably Thad Levine or something.

if you remember

no one was commenting on your idea, they were commenting on your decision to waste an entire fanpost on the idea…

What makes you think

that Prior will be groomed to be a reliever only?

his injuries

idk, maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want to see him out there for more than two or three innings at a time until we know his body can hold up in longer appearances. if it can, then maybe he gets groomed into it IF he does well in relief. I could see him as next year’s number 5 starter at the end of the year IF he can stay healthy, and until we see him for a full year, that is still a very big if.

he threw 11 total innings for the Orange County Flyers...

in 9 games…i think it’s safe to presume he is not coming in here to make 5 inning appearances.

Because he will.
