upset pick; ducks over the froglettes +/- 3

I think you got your streams crossed, chief.

The Ducks aren’t playing the Frogs.

The Beavers are.

Some of these lines

point out why I’m not a huge fan of College football. I’m not sure games with 30 plus point spreads are all that compelling.

Not a huge fan of blowout games

just think it’s bad sports.

College football would be better if they had a smaller division I, and swept out the trash like Rice and Miami of Ohio.

Week 1 is a pretty soft set of games

LSU/UNC, VT/Boise, and TCU/Or St are pretty much the only compelling games (besides the team you root for of course)

Washington St/ Okie St might have something

Not to mention Texas Tech/SMU, UCLA/KState, ND/Purdue, Michigan/UCONN, and many more.

You just gotta weed out the blowouts and find the intriguing matchups, man.

Hell, I gotta listen to my Aggies on the damn radio tonight, while the Frogs and Beavers are playing at JerryWorld.

NFL is definitely steak while the NCAA is hamburger but....

NCAA is deeply personal and fans are far more passionate about their teams than the NFL.

I love the NFL because I love to gamble and for no other reason.

I just think

the worst NFL game on any given week is usually a better game than over half the College football games out there.

I wish College football would do something where there weren’t so many crap games, that are every bit as bad as NFL preseason games.

Yeah but in any given week,

there will be 16 NFL games and at least 12 of them are the equivalent to watching old people fuck.

Thats what happens when you have over 100 teams

If the NCAA went to a 32 team league then every game every week would be amazing

by bigsteve on Sep 4, 2010 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Over half suck...

sure, but when you have 50 games a week that still leaves more quality games than you see in the NFL. And let’s not act like many of the NFL games don’t suck too. On any given week you may have 6 or 7 good NFL games if you’re lucky.

I’m not wrong at all about CFB being better than the NFL. The close ties and passion in those games both on and off the field make them superior to the NFL. Sorry.

So Rice looked pretty good today

I honestly didn’t expect anything that good from them. They’re never going to beat UT, at least not while they have absolutely no competition for recruiting in Texas.

But to hold their own, make UT worry a bit and keep them from getting meaningful time for their backups… that’s a moral victory for us. Some of their freshmen/ transfers looked really good – actually like football players instead of the amusing jokes Rice normally puts out there. Today is the first time I really have thought that a bowl game is a reasonable possibility for the Owls this year.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Sep 4, 2010 8:27 PM CDT reply actions

i would qualify that phrase "Rice looked good today"

take away a silly 47 yd deflection pass at the end of the first half(with 15 secs left) and the 4th qtr td drive of 20 yds that was set up by a Julio Borbon-like decision to field a punt with 48 secs left and Rice had 153 yards on 56 total plays for an average of 2.7 yds per play.

It was a boring ass game and I would not say UT was worried a bit. But I’ll give Rice credit for the first quarter, they came to play. After that, the talent disparity was quite apparent….

Take your moral victories(UT backups played a decent amount btw) but don’t drink too much bong water, dude.

I hope Rice does well…

Yeah

I agree, Rice surprised me a bit today

but youll did use a lot of lucky breaks to keep it where it was. A couple things change and UT wins by 50. 2 missed fgs, 2 dropped pick 6s…not scoring from the 1.

But like I said, Rice did some things well and I think they should ultimately be fairly pleased with the performance

Eric Crouch just compared Andy Dalton to Jeff Garcia

I have to say that seems like a pretty good comparison in terms of their style of play.

My wife asked me tonight if Andy Dalton was an NFL prospect. I said maybe a late-round guy (like 6th or 7th), but that his style (zone-read, option, etc.) doesn’t fit the pro mold. I know he has a pretty good arm, but he’s going to need to showcase it more in order to become a real NFL prospect.

Agree?

Baylor is a fucking joke

Their whole existence is based on forcing their religion down other peoples throats. I remember taking a tour of the campus. All they fucking talked about was about Jesus. For a religion the prides itself on tolerance, the school as a whole seems pretty hateful to the opposing viewpoint. You know, like when someone hung a noose on campus after Obama was elected?

Ugh. That school is one step above a cult. It gives me great joy whooping up on the inbred child of the Big 12. Can’t wait ’till the 18th.

by hornedfrogs45 on Sep 5, 2010 3:06 AM CDT reply actions

Sounds like someone took his experience with the Fanpost a little hard, eh?

But let’s talk about this comment here for a second.

You say Baylor’s entire existence is based on “forcing their religion down other peoples (sic) throats.” You use as an example an experience while taking a tour of the campus.

So you were on a tour of the campus, a voluntary activity where you expect to be told about the University, and they had the gall to share with you the entire purpose of the institution, which is to exist as a Christian university? How dare they!

What did you think was going to happen, that they were going to give you a crash course in Wiccanism or satanic rituals?

And about the noose, if you actually research the incident, you’ll find out that it wasn’t true, never happened, and every single news organization which reported the incident (because it got a lot of coverage, as you can imagine) printed retractions of the story. It wasn’t a noose, it was a cord tied to a post used to hold up a Homecoming banner. OH GOD, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING, LEAVING THAT UP THERE????

Do a little research on the University before you spout your ridiculous bullshit. Baylor exists as a Baptist university, the largest in the world, in fact. But on campus you’ll find people of every denomination, race, creed, color, socioeconomic background, political affiliation, sexual orientation, or possible viewpoint. All are allowed.

Is Baylor perfect, obviously not. But it’s a damn sight better than you make it out to be.

I think every Big 12 team

should watch out for the Fightin’ Texas Aggies this year. Quite similar to what Ok State was supposed to be last year, except we don’t rely on a single Dez Bryant type at receiver. And we have 2 beastly running backs, not just a Kendall Hunter. If Tim DeRuyter improves the DBs, as he is expected to do, I could see us being a top 20 team at the very least when all is said and done.

I'd give Tech a B- for the game. Saw some good things

but Potts is a problem. SMU is going to win 8-9 games this year but Tech, which was far superior, kept leaving the door open. It’s a win, first game jitters are out of the way and it’s on to New Mexico next week.

I’d also give Florida a C, Texas a B- and Oklahoma a D. Between Florida, Texas & Oklahoma, Texas Tech played the toughest team this week. Oklahoma gets a good test next week with Florida State.

A&M & Baylor played East Cupcake & Little Sisters of the Poor so they don’t get grades

I’m rooting with everything I have that Virginia Tech wins tonight..

"What IS your fascination with my forbidden closet of mystery?"

by Maximilian on Sep 5, 2010 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

well

the argument is not that Kansas is better than Boise St & TCU because KU is in the Big XII and TCU and BSU are in the MWC/WAC

Everyone knows that TCU, BSU, Utah, BYU, Fresno, etc are better than the lowest tier in AQ conferences.

The problem is where they would rank in those conferences among the elite schools. Could TCU really hold their own with UT and OU, or do they really belong in the 2nd tier with the schools like Tech, OSU, and A&M? Said another way – take Texas Tech and put them in the MWC – do they now go undefeated every year?

I’m a fan of non-BCS conferences, but that’s just the reality of it. Schools like BSU and TCU and Utah have done all they can – take care of business in their weak conference and schedule tough schools out of conference. But comparing TCU to Kansas and saying “See! That is why TCU should be a top 5 team” doesn’t make sense.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Sep 6, 2010 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think that is what he was saying at all.

I pretty easily understood that the point he was trying to make was that with Kansas and Ole Miss losing to 1-AA schools this weekend, it’s a pretty ridiculous argument to include them in the “grind” of the schedule that a Big 12 or SEC team plays when compared to Boise State or TCU.

I took it as making of a comparison between lower to mid-level Big 12 or SEC teams and their counterparts in the MWC or WAC.

by michael bluth on Sep 6, 2010 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions

well

I don’t think anyone really denies that there are some awful teams in the best conferences. The difference is that most of the teams are good, with a handful of mediocre and 1-2 awful ones, whereas in the non-BCS conferences, only 1-2 are good while most of the teams are mediocre or awful. And when people say that Texas has to face a grind unlike TCU, they aren’t (or shouldn’t be) talking about Kansas or Baylor.

Though it will be interesting if Texas will keep scheduling three cupcake out of conference games when they have to play Baylor, Kansas, and Iowa State every year. That then becomes a pretty weak scheudle year-in, year-out; not too different from what a TCU or Boise St schedules by aggressively booking tough out of conference opponents.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Sep 6, 2010 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I was just pointing out that his post did nothing to directly compare KU or Ole Miss to TCU, but rather compared the quality of competition that a top team in the MWC sees to that of a top Big 12 or SEC team.

I think his point had some merit, mainly that the bad teams in each conference are probably equally bad. Is it really that much more embarrassing for KU to lose to 1 -AA school than it was for UNM to get blown out by 72 points against Oregon?

Like you said though, nobody should point to Kansas or Iowa State as part of the grind that a Big 12 team plays year in and year out. The better argument would be to point to teams like Tech, OK State, Missouri, or even a&m, the middle of the pack big 12 teams that are much better than the middle of the pack MWC teams.

by michael bluth on Sep 6, 2010 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think you can compare KU to UNM

If KU plays that game 100 times, they lose to ND St once. No one would ever accuse Kansas or Ole Miss of not being as good as a 1-AA team. You get games like that when the obviously better school just isn’t prepared, is looking further down the schedule, or the underdog just has their number that day.

And it is easy to see how it happens – heck, I was running through the same upset procedure in my head against Texas this week. Rice gets off to a 3-0 lead and holds UT scoreless at their 1 yard line. Say Rice then drives the length of the field and scores a TD there (instead of throwing a pick). It is 10-0 at the end of the first quarter; the UT defense is in shambles, Rice’s defense has momentum since it held UT at scrimmage at the goal line. UT starts to panic, sees their national championship hopes drifting away because of RICE?!?! and then it just goes downhill from there. (Oh, how I wish that had happened)

Obviously that didn’t happen to UT, but it did happen to Kansas and Ole Miss to a lesser extent. Once it was clear that they weren’t able to quickly put away this AA team, they started to panic and couldn’t quite get it together. That is the risk you take when you schedule teams that are a fireable offense if you lose to.

Those losses are fun to make fun of, but they don’t mean that KU and Miss are on the same level as UNM. I’m pretty sure that they’d probably beat New Mexico by 40 points as well.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Sep 6, 2010 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

i would agree, but

a good team will beat UNM 100 times out of 100 times and KU 100 times out of 100 times.

Yes, they’d beat UNM by a bunch more than KU, but it’s still a W at the end of the day that the better team can count on.

See, BcS proponents always point to the dregs of the MWC (New Mexico/CSU) and use that as leverage to say the schedule sucks. They don’t point out the competitiveness of say, Air Force, or a resurgent Wyoming (they at least went bowling last year, and won).

I don’t think TCU would go undefeated in a BCS conference. Then again, they wouldn’t be expected to. Most seasons, Bama, UT, and Florida can’t go undefeated in their own conference either. Does that mean they’re undeserving of title talk? Of course not.

"What IS your fascination with my forbidden closet of mystery?"

by Maximilian on Sep 6, 2010 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

as a TCU fan, no, I don't think TCU would go undefeated in a BCS conference

In the SEC, they’d probably lose 3-4 games.
In the Big 12, they’d probably lose 2 games.
In the Pac 10, they’d probably lose 2 games.
In the Big 10, they’d probably lose 2 games.
In the ACC, they’d probably lose 1 game.
In the Big East, they would probably go undefeated (the Big East sucks!).

I understand when people say TCU wouldn’t go undefeated in a major conference, but I will definitely disagree when people want to act like TCU would be an also-ran crap team in a big conference. Being in a bigger conference would actually make TCU better because they’d have access to a bigger pool of recruits than they do now.

That is a fair assessment

but what you wrote there really describes a team that is around #10 or #11 in the country, not #6 or whatever TCU is now.

I’m not trying to knock TCU – I greatly prefer them over any BCS schools (I’m a Rice fan – I hate the Big XII). They are definitely among that group of schools that could, any given week, beat just about any school in the country. But while TCU may actually beat Florida, they also could lose by 20 points and no one would be shocked.

The travesty is that we’ll never know. The schools like Texas and Florida will never schedule them voluntarily, and they’ll fight tooth and nail to keep from playing them in the bowls. 5-10 schools control college football, and they’ll do everything they can to keep hold of that power.

it really doesn't matter

TCU is now 14-3 vs. BCS teams in their past 17 games with the losses coming to #7 UT in Austin, #2 OU in Norman, and the aforementioned 70-35 Texas Tech game.

The point is that they continue to beat teams in BCS conferences.

If you think I’m reaching back too far to 2006, why would it make sense to keep continuing back to 2004? If you think we’re going too far back to 2006, just say it doesn’t matter and move along. Arguing about the 2004 game only puts legitimacy to the inclusion of the 2006 game.

What’s ironic is the fact that Mike Leach and the Red Raiders running up the score in Lubbock (30 yd TD pass with 3 mins left in a 28 point game) probably gave TCU the motivation to knock them on their asses in 2006.

OU was #7 in the country (pretty much where they are now), and they were coming off a BCS bowl in 2004.

TCU’s still the last team to win in Norman.

Talent isn’t the end-all be-all. Otherwise, UT would win a title every year based on their recruiting class.

They have some of it...

The difference between schools like TCU and Utah and schools like UT, OU, and Florida isn’t that they don’t have the talent. It’s the depth. TCU’s and Utah’s 1’s may not be quite as good as those schools, but they’re close. The biggest difference is that the 3’s for schools like UT, OU, et al. are still just barely a notch below their 1’s. Those kids are still superior talents. The TCU’s and Utah’s of the college football world just don’t have that depth.

Boise didn't have the talent, top to bottom, that Va Tech had,

and yet, when they had at it on the field, Boise beat them.

I still say TCU has the better players between them and Boise, but Boise proved that they were better coached at the Fiesta Bowl.

It’s why they need to have it out on the field.

"What IS your fascination with my forbidden closet of mystery?"

by Maximilian on Sep 7, 2010 12:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Boise has some serious talent.

They’ve been doing it fairly consistently for a good four years now, and I don’t think I’ve seen them get out-talented over that time frame. It takes some good talent and some depth to do that.

Of course, now the talking point is “do they have the depth to do it every week in the SEC,” but even that is an acknowledgment of how much they’ve shown, since five years ago it wasn’t even close (as shown by UGA), and then after that it became “they couldn’t do it without the trick plays” and/or “they caught them napping,” morphing into “sure, they’re good if they have weeks to prepare and come up with a scheme to hide their athletic shortcomings,” but now that they’ve shown they have a fair amount of speed of their own it’s down to the depth question.

TCU has some nice players as well, but given the lengths of their runs I’d give Boise the edge in the depth department.

And then of course you can build your program up like Utah has done and join a power conference. I don’t think you can say those schools can or can’t compete in a major conference. You’ll never really know unless it happens and they get a shot to prove it.

I remember when everyone was saying those schools couldn’t beat the big schools in a single game either. Then came Boise against OU and Utah against ’Bama.

Texas pathetic weakass schedule

Is a joke. A joke I’m getting tired of.

Year after year Texas plays nothing but patsies.

Take the Hurricanes, week 2, we go to #2 Ohio State.

Looking at Texas schedule, they only play like two ranked teams all year. And those teams are Big 12 small school teams, Nebraska and Oklahoma. You know no matter what Nebraskas ranked, they arent worth a crap.

It’s just a joke. And it’s going to get worse now that Texas rigged it up to be the only conference in the country that doesn’t play a conference title game.

It’s not like this is new, Texas NEVER schedules anybody worth a crap in non conference. Believe me, as a longtime Texas hater, I have watched them pound on ten patsies a year year after year after year after year. And now worse, the big 12 is basically a bunch of small weak schools, and Texas. I rember ONE year, several years ago, they played Ohio St early on in non conference. That’s pretty much it for Texas ever playing a tough no conference game.

I really hope the poll voters start penalizing Texas for this nonsense, though I doubt it.

Boise's been legit for a while.

They get dismissed since all anybody remembers is the statue of liberty play and the hook-and-ladder to tie it, but they were all over OU for most of that game before briefly collapsing and letting the Sooners go up, and they haven’t really dropped off since then. Maybe this game will further diminish their lingering rep as a trick-play-happy, Texas Tech-style offense-only team. Their defense was the star last year in the Fiesta and against Oregon but people ignored/forgot about those since one was against another non-BCS school and the other was a season-opener (which this is too, but against a bigger name).

Then again, VT’s get-in-the-top-10-then-lose-the-first-big-game-you-play act is pretty famous itself (and the same could be said about every other ACC team for the past five years, which is why part of me wouldn’t mind them winning, but fuck it, go Boise).

BSU would have scored anyway on the next play

But I don’t think that should count as a catch. The ball clearly moved when he touched the ground, and though it never touched, he didn’t gain “control” until he was out of bounds.

But like I said, they would have scored anyway, it was first and goal from the 1.

Yeah, that looked like a not-enough-evidence-to-overturn play to me.

by Closure GT on Sep 6, 2010 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know man

Looked pretty clean to me. Just because the ball moves doesn’t mean he doesn’t have control. He caught it with one hand so its naturally gonna be less secure than a two handed catch

by bigsteve on Sep 6, 2010 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

That argument makes no sense.

If it’s not secure, it doesn’t matter how many hands he has on it, it’s not a catch.

The ball moving when he hit the ground means he didn’t have possession of it, and he slid out of bounds before he had actual “control.”

by Aquaman, Esq. on Sep 6, 2010 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

The ball may move because his arms moved

He had a defender all over him so he may have been going after the ball.

All I know is it looked like a damn nice, clean catch to me. There definitely wasn’t enough evidence to overturn it so I say good call refs

JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Sep 6, 2010 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

To oversimplify things to an incredible degree, there are nine possible outcomes for law students after they graduate.

I have NO idea about percentages, which would vary radically from school-to-school and region-to-region. For example, a Harvard grad trying to get a job in Dallas would probably have absolutely no problem, but in NYC he might have to look harder. An SMU grad in Dallas would have to work harder than the Harvard grad or do better (from the standpoint of performance in law school/undergrad/whatever else they’ve done in life) but can likely find a job, while that same SMU grad in NYC wouldn’t really have much of a prayer.

But anyway, the outcomes:
1. They stay in school doing something else (MBA, Masters of some other kind, Ph. D., medical school, etc.)
2. They don’t get a legal job and don’t want one, so they do something else.
3. They don’t get a legal job, but they want one.
4. They get a job in public service (local/state/federal government).
5. They get a job in non-profit.
6. They hang up a shingle and start practicing on their own.
7. They get a job at a small firm.
8. They get a job at a medium-sized firm.
9. They get a job at a large firm, the so-called “Big Firm Job.”
10. They get a judicial clerkship.

This list started at four outcomes and grew as I thought about new things you could do. Most law students would likely say number 8 is the best option for private practice due to the fact that you make more money, do higher-profile work, whatever. Big Firm is where the typical law students to be. That’s the stereotypical outcome most people associate with law school, but it’s not at all the norm for law school students, and it will become even more scarce over time as the number of students continues to grow and the pricing model of the Big Firms comes into even more question.

Sagarin, in particular, is pretty meaningless early in the season before this season's records are "connected."

At this point I think it’s still heavily based on last year’s results.

And the Predictor ones are the most accurate part of Sagarin, but they’re particularly bad this early since margin of victory in just one game can vary wildly:
Oregon
Ohio State
Alabama
Georgia
Boise
TCU
Arizona
Oklahoma State
California
Virginia Tech

Yay Pac 10 teams running up the score!
