293 obp / 370 slg / 663 ops since ASB
Julio Borbon? No. Christian Guzman? Nope. Jorge Cantu? Negative.
That would be the one Vladimir Guerrero ... our DH and cleanup hitter. The guy has been awful since July. I'm tired of watching him stink at the plate and make dumb decisions on the base paths. If he wants to play next year he needs to find a new home*. Hamilton is showing that he should be at least a part time DH next season.
*I reserve the right to change my opinion if Vlad gets hot and leads us to a World Championship. Come on, Vlad. Prove me wrong!

If you don’t think Vlad should be coming back based on his second half (a notion I’d agree with) I’m not sure how 10-15 games in the postseason would change anything.

Signing Vlad
instead of Byrd was, in hindsight, one of the worst moves of the offseason.

I agree, but the danger of hindsight is that it's always 20/20.
If they had ponied up what, 3 for $15mil for Byrd, most people would have gone nuts. I, for one, thought Borbon would be better than he has been.

It it tough to say that they should have signed Byrd
even still. It wouldn’t have made sense for the Rangers to go into 2010 with 5 outfielders. And while we would like to think that Byrd being here would have offset some of the Borbon innings, odds are he would have meant less playing time for Cruz, based on past observations of Wash.
If you want to say “the Rangers should have signed this guy” with the full benefit of hindsight, they should have signed Thome for 20% of what Vlad cost.
Go Rice Owls!
I personally
wouldn’t have gone nuts, I thought Cubs got him for a bargain. One of my biggest worries in the offseason came true when Borbon screwed the pooch his rookie year, and we got caught without a good option for CF.

Well, I don't know that the two are that comparable
Considering Byrd would’ve been a long term commitment wheras Vlad was essentially a one-year lotto ticket.
As far as 2010 goes, yeah you’d rather have Byrd’s production than Vlad’s. But Byrd’s deal extends beyond 2010, and you have to consider that his 2010 numbers are driven almost exclusively by a .343 BABIP. His ISO has actually slid back down to it’s career average, and his GB% has jumped to nearly 52%, both somewhat ominous signs for him carrying this success into the last two years of his deal in Chicago (which is also where the bulk of the money he’s owed is).
And as shitty as Vlad has been over the last two+ months, you can’t entirely throw out what he did in the first half. That production counts too, and he’s still provided solid value on the whole. His cliffdiving display in the second half is definitely disappointing, and it definitely means we probably shouldn’t bring him back, but it doesn’t make him worthless.

Very good, indeed.
Good point about Vlad’s first half-where would they have been without that output?

We'd be in better shape
due to better 2nd half production

Why you son of a bitch.
Just when I think you are just out to bash all Rangers, you go and do something like this AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!!
Good points.

Wrong comparison
Thome fits better in this scenario as a pure DH.

It is so ridiculous
That at 40, Thome can still post a .421 wOBA, 20 HRs, and a .333 ISO. All for just 1.5 Million. Jesus Christ. Wish we had pursued him. We’re paying 5.5M for Vlad this year.
Well, it's worth pointing out Thome has all of 74 PA against lefties this year
But yeah, he is pretty nuts.

Right comparison
Getting a pure DH is ridiculous if you can get a player who can also play a position instead.
Getting nothing but a pure DH really ties your hands in regards to resting players like Josh Hamilton.

Ha ha, oh man.
One of the related fanposts is “It’s Time…to trade Vlad?” I remember reading that 3 months ago. Now I’m all sad. :(
Ha
I remember Ben Rogers throwing that out there because he was convinced the Rangers weren’t good enough to win the West and didn’t deserve Vlad.
