Speaking of that pic above...

why the f*ck was Guzman leading off yesterday? Not that it would have made a difference I guess. Just the thought process. Seems like Kins would be the backup leadoff hitter, like today.

by selke99 on Sep 6, 2010 2:26 PM CDT reply actions

Guzman had something like a .500 AVG against the Twins and had a nice game the day before

Yes Kinsler should have been leadoff but its not like its defensible for Guzman to be there.

And he had a nice game as well so theres really not much to complain about

that argument lost some validity Friday when the Rangers at full strength were 4 hit by a minor leaguer without a team

the team had an opportunity to win – hell they were given a win thanks to Detroit the previous night and they failed miserably.

MIN isn’t exactly at full strength without their best player either.

Yeah the record for the season does it matter when comes to down actually winning the series

i’m just afraid the team is waiting around for October and then will just expect to start winning, even though the team has been .500 for the past 2 months.

As for July when they were mostly healthy, Cliff only would have had 1 or 2 more starts but hes been awful lately, and Kinsler got hurt on the 29th.

Hopefully when/if they get healthy they’ll stop playing like crap, but i have my doubts.

3. Kinsler – 2B
4. Hamilton – CF
5. Vlad – DH
6. Cruz – RF
7. Murphy – LF
8. Treanor – C
9. Moreland – 1B

This isn’t the actual batting order I’m suggesting, but something similar to that? Anyone?

It's interesting that the effects of Coors Field so often seem to be wildly overrated. . .

. . . and here we seem to have the opposite going on.

Votto has been significantly better than Cargo offensively even before you adjust for the parks (and, overrated as it may be, Coors is still quite the boost over Cincy).

As far as defense, Gonzalez comes out as merely decent in the numbers, and, from watching him almost every day, I don’t see much conflict going on there.

Gonzalez is really good, and I don’t think Votto is the obvious MVP, but I’ll take him over Cargo without even thinking twice.

I do think he’s probably lost out on the award, though. Which is fine, there are other deserving people.

by philkid3 on Sep 6, 2010 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

So how does CarGon's defensive metrics look compared to Votto?

And wouldn’t CF be a more valuable position then 1B? Doesn’t that give Gon the edge?

I just think Gonzalez has the whole MVP package. I would say, what 3-4 HR’s are from Coors field? That leaves him only 5 HR’s behind Votto. I would also say that the RBI stat is because he’s leading off more and if he were hitting 3-4, he would be above 100 by now. (I’m using the triple crown numbers here since I"m going quick and dirty, don’t blast me)

Gonzalez is the only guy in the NL with a Slugging above .600 as well. Plus again, the steals and the position just seems to be what puts me over the top as well.

Stat Corner's park effects adjust by handedness.

All parks don’t affect righties the same way as they affect lefties.

Pitch recognition? Really? I can't imagine a park giving you better vision.

"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz

by AceJC on Sep 6, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh yes, parks alter all sorts of thing.

Pitch visibility being one of them. Coors also effects the way pitchers can move balls.

People kind of consider park effects as how often balls leave the park, but there are a ton of thinks going on in ballparks that affect how often balls are hit and how far they go when they are.

by philkid3 on Sep 6, 2010 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I can wrap my head around the fastball being faster, the movement on all the pitches being flater.

But I am not sure I can see pitchers not using this information as well. I mean, I would assume pitchers would pitch further away from the strike zone knowing their ball isn’t going to bite as much as it normally does.

And I completely understand the difference in the triple heaven aspect as well. I’m unable to understand the point about the pitches being only focused in a smaller zone than other parks. I read the article quickly and can see the point, but it doesn’t pass my smell test. But I’m a pretty skeptical guy when it comes to new information. I’d have to look into it more myself or see supporting evidence.

by coolaid on Sep 6, 2010 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok

Votto has been four runs above average in DRS and three runs in UZR. Both are a little below his career rates, but not much. He’s been an above average but unspectacular fielder this year, and that’s nothing out of whack with his career.

Cargo has been -6 and -3.3, respectively in center. That’s a bit below his career rates, but 1) he doesn’t look like a plus CF watching him, as much as the ultra-homerific Rockies announcers act like he is, and 2) his career (like Votto) itself is a SSS. In the corners he’s been -1 and -1.6. I do think he’s a better corner outfielder than that skill wise, but whatever.

Regardless, there’s not so much evidence that they’ve done anything relative to the position defensively to separate each other much.

As far as positional adjustment, if you think Cargo could have been an average centerfielder in a full season there, he might make up some ground on Votto. The positional adjustment used at FanGraphs only has him making up about seven runs in value by being an outfielder, but it’s that low thanks to spending a lot of time in the corners. But he spends those time in the corners in part because he doesn’t appear to be an elite centerfielder.

I’ll address the second paragraph with its own post.

by philkid3 on Sep 6, 2010 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Here's the thing. . .

It’s more than home runs. Coors promotes offense in tons of ways beyond how far the ball travels. You can see a representation here. The ball is thrown differently, the field works differently, the ball moves differently and the outfield is huge. Line drives happen a lot in Coors and triples happen at hilarious paces (seriously, righties hit 90% more triples when they go to Coors!). Cincy is a hitters park, but Colorado inflates offense for lefties more than twice as much.

As far as the RBIs, I don’t even know where they are in them other than they’re both near the top. I’m talking about who’s been more valuable, not who the writers are likely to vote for.

Votto is beating Cargo .435 to .419 in wOBA. Both very good, both inflated by their parks, but Cargo is getting a much bigger boost by playing half of his games in Colorado. Votto has about a nine run lead in weighted runs created before park adjustment, which would put them pretty close when you consider Carlos playing more valuable positions. After park adjustment, Votto has almost a 12 run lead.

Now some quick and dirty numbers for you. Votto leads in fWAR 6.2 to 4.9. If you’d rather use DRS for defense, it goes to 6.3 over 4.7. Cargo does, however, have a lead in WPA if that’s the kind of thing you’d like to use, but it ignores defense.

by philkid3 on Sep 6, 2010 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Good stuff. If it wasn't a typo, what does fWAR mean?

Also, do these numbers basically say in a purely batting sense they are basically equal including park adjustments?

I believe it's showing Votto has the superior bat, and CarGo

is getting boosts by playing in a field that supports extra bases on base hits.

And also that Votto’s hitting overcomes his weaker position.

And I’m not exactly sure how defensive metrics are measures, but I am going to assume that perhaps Coors field can make Gonzalez look worse? I’m using my mat and have not done research on this, just want your opinion on this.

here is a question

and I honestly don’t know the answer:

Does it matter that Gonzalez plays a considerable number of divisional games in extreme pitchers parks, such as LA (kind of), SF, and SD (which should count twice), whereas Votto’s divisional games are in more friendly htiters parks?

It might.

I’d be surprised if it made that much of a difference, but it probably makes some and I’d be interested in seeing how much.

StatCorner, btw, has San Fran as neutral for lefties and very slightly hitter friendly for righties. It depresses lefty home runs a ton and a half, but it makes up for it with triples and some slight gains in a lot of other factors.

lol

Even he, I’m sure, lost a ton of home runs there. He might have had 80+ in a neutral park.

You could get more accurate with actual hit charting. . .

. . . but the StatCorner adjustment thinks he would have probably hit about 4-5 more home runs playing in a neutral park in 2001. So that’s 78.

I don’t feel like going too deep in to his splits, but if half of his home runs when Pac Bell was built were hit at home, then he would have hit about 19 more between 2000 and retirement. That would have put him at 781 for his career.

Of course, how the park plays may have changed over the years. And Candlestick was also anti-home run, I believe.

by philkid3 on Sep 6, 2010 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Also worth noting:

Not that steals are worth much, but as long as we’re talking about them, Cargo only edges Votto by 11. With another 4 CS over Votto, as well, it’s about a run added over Votto.

by philkid3 on Sep 6, 2010 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

See, you see it as only 11, I see it as almost doubling Votto's total.

And the CS is double Votto’s as well. I don’t know, it just seems while everyone around CarGo has been having issues, (Stewart, catcher situation, Hawpe, Helton/1B?) he’s been the beacon in a lineup that can’t get situated.

I'm going to reply here...

according to RAR (Batting + Fielding + Replacement + Positional), Zimmerman has been the most valuable NL player.

Here are the guys in front of CarGo:
Ryan Zimmerman
Joey Votto
Albert Pujols
Andres Torres
Matt Holliday
Adrian Gonzalez
Brian McCann (I imagine he would be higher if we had better defensive metrics for catchers)
Rickie Weeks
Carlos Gonzalez

So Trinity played some 2 time defending state champ from Arkansas, and peared them, 80-26.

Even by Trinity standards, that’s unmerciful. And I love it.

It’s not an issue of perspective, every single football game that Mushmouth has ever called is the greatest game played to date. He sensationalizes every coach, player, school, team, cheerleader, whatever. All part of the highlight culture where what is going on RIGHT NOW is the best thing that has ever happened.

The entire idea of pre-season rankings is idiotic.

Especially in the coach’s poll, which actually has a hand in determining who plays in the national title game.

But I will agree with you, Va Tech looked really good tonight. I’d be surprised if they didn’t end up winning the ACC.

Really good?

The fumbled snap, the missed FG, the missed two-point conversion, the penalties, the blocked punt, how much yardage they gave up on kick-offs and punts…Va Tech was awful tonight.
