OT: bbq in Lockhart
Which place should we stop at?
So we're going on our yearly family vacation to Port Aransas later this week, and I started thinking that we're gonna be fairly close to Lockhart on the drive down (we have to go through Austin). Now I love barbecue, and it's hard to find good bbq in Oklahoma (although not as hard as it was to find in Ohio) and I've heard a lot about how there are three really great bbq joints in Lockhart (Smittys, Blacks and Kreuz Market). Here is my question: for those who have been and partaken, if I were to only stop at one of those places, which one should I eat at? I'm looking mainly at brisket, possibly ribs. I don't want this to turn into "My uncle lives in (insert random town here) and they've got the best bbq." Just looking at "the big 3" in Lockhart.

I have always wanted to go there.
Sadly I never get that far south, I’ve heard they are all equally good in their respective ways.

I voted for Smitty's
although I haven’t been to Kreuz before. There’s another place called Chisolm Trail. Its not very good compared to the others so don’t bother stopping.
Smitty’s over Blacks any day of the week. There’s a reason why the wait for Smitty’s was about 30-45 minutes while there was no wait at Black’s. The wait for Smitty’s BBQ is well worth it.
Have a safe drive to Port A this week and watch out for the tropical depression/storm/hurricane that’s headed north from Mexico.
Tropical Storm Hermine could be a hurricane before coming ashore tonight.

What can I say
We Loblaws have impeccable timing! I’m a lot like the real-life George Costanza. We’re not leaving until Thursday, so hopefully we’ll miss the hard stuff (twss).

My uncle is making the drive down there later on today.
So they’ll probably be driving right in the middle of the shit.

Smitty's All The Way
Kreuz is also good, but Smitty’s is awesome.
I’ve eaten my way around Central Texas BBQ several times over, from Cooper’s in Llano to Louie Mueller’s in Taylor to Snow’s in Lexington and numerous places south of those.
If you have to pick one, pick Smitty’s.
How does Saltlick BBQ rank with these guys?
That place was awesome.

The Saltlick is great fun to go to, but the BBQ is not as good
As Kreuz or Smitty’s. Very good sides though. Franklin is my new fave in Austin.
yeah, Saltlick sucked

either
smittys or kreuz. same style. same family. family feud there split kreuz’s several years ago. take your pick. both great.
cooper’s in llano is the most overrated bbq in texas. inman’s there is so much better. coopers is for tourists. live off past reputation. nothing like it used to be.
I voted for Black's, but I was torn between them and Smitty's....

Work in Austin
and make the drive to Corpus three times a month for business. Kruez is the one. Black’s markets well and used to be the place to go, but the family sold it several years ago and hasn’t bee the same since. The difference between Kruez and Smitty’s probably depends on your tastes. Both are good. Black’s is really no better than a Dallas chain anymore.
Pick up a couple of seedless watermelons for the family in Luling along the way.
It’s about 15 minutes out of the way, but you can also tour the Spoetzl brewery in Shiner if that’s your thing. Pretty interesting, actually.

Shiner isn't 15 minutes away.
It’s more like 45 minutes to an hour — we stopped in at Lockhart on our way there and back from DFW.
We had Black’s and Smitty’s. Smitty’s is awesome. Black’s was alright but it’s comparable to Rudy’s. (I like Rudy’s, but Smitty’s is on a completely different level.)
Really, any one of them you should enjoy but my wife and I enjoyed Smitty’s the best. And the Spoetzl brewery is a really cool brewery and makes for a nice tour
15 min
out of the way if you’re heading to Port A. Meaning, off the beaten path.

Sad to hear that about Blacks
I went about 5 years ago and it was probably the best I’ve ever had.
Not mediocre. Right about average
I agree about Black's
They do market very well compared to the others but the bbq just didn’t compare.
Smitty's and Kreuz are running neck-and-neck in the poll
maybe I should stop at both? Then I can tell for myself….from what I understand, they’re right down the street from each other, right? Well, I guess we’re not exactly talking about Lower Manhattan….everything in Lockhart is right down the street from everything else…
"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"
stop at both
take some pics dude, please?

Stop at both
and order half of what you normally would. Either that or stop at one on the way down, stop at the other on the way home.
Warning: Kreuz is closed on Sundays, Smitty’s is open from 9 AM to 3 PM on Sundays.
You can't go wrong
But I put in a vote for Blacks, because they often get no love. It’s excellent. A co-worker of mine swears by Chisholm Trail, which is where the local go according to him.

loblaw.. have you ever eaten at Jakes Rib
in Chickasha Oklahoma? worth the drive from OKC my man…

the first rib I ever ate in my life was at Jake's when I was 2
with my grandma and graddaddy. And my son’s first forary into the world of eating in restauants was Jakes (he was 1 month old…we’ll have to get hima rib when he gets older). The wife is from Andarko, so we go every once in a while (you have to go through Chickasha to get to ’Darko).

Kreuz
When you go through Corpus you should eat at Snoopy’s under the JFK Causeway. They only take cash but you will be glad you stopped, excellent seafood on the water. Get the crab stuffed jalapenos.

There is, in fact, a manly and lawful passion for equality which excites men to wish all to be powerful and honored. This passion tends to elevate the humble to the rank of the great; but there exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

I'm actually going to Port Aransas for a wedding in October...thanks for the tip.

I think I saw that place on the way down
and I though it looked like it would be a good seafood place. We’re only here until Monday morning, but we’ll have to get down there.

Snoopy's was pretty good
the shrimp were a bit chewy, but the batter and the hushpuppies were both the jam. T-minus 17 hours until bbq!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in Lockhart. Here is one local's proper bbq order:
1. Smitty’s
2. Chisholm Trail
3. City Market in LULING (12 miles south on 183, on right just before train tracks)
3. Kreutz
4. Black’s
Smitty’s has best meat, and atmosphere, hands down. ***LOCAL TIP for FASTER SERVICE: when you enter to order your meats, when facing the butcher block in the smoke room stand in the line on the left, it is always shorter, so its like the locals vip line if you know to do it.
Their richly smoked moist flesh has been served on butcher paper for 100 years. Bring a jacknife as they don’t really have much in the way of utensils and you may prefer an easy cut to simply tearing the flesh or using the plastic knife they offer. Although the meat is all so tender you likely won’t need it. They’ll give you sauce if you need it but you really don’t, I find. I always get the pork ribs and some slices of shoulder (leaner version of their brisket), with a hunk of cheese, an avocado, a tomato (sprinkle some of the salt/pepper rub on it), a small thing of potato salad, some sweet pickle slices and a cold beer. But the brisket, sausage, pork chops and prime rib are all exceptional. Get a big scoop of blue bell for $1 if you still have room for desert.
They shoot a lot of movies in there and you’ll often see celebrities quietly eating and licking their fingers. My wife ate next to Robert Duvall. My daughter and I met the host of a food network show earlier this year when they were shooting a best bbq episode. Somehow Smitty’s didn’t win so I didn’t bother to tivo it.
Chisholm trail is a local’s favorite because of the copious homemade delicious side dishes, in addition to the good meats. They also have fried fish nites and ck fried steak nites. The hush-puppies on fish night are best I’ve had since I lived in NC.
***BIG reason for #2 is that it’s CHEAP. I don’t know how they can charge so little and still make a profit. I have played cards with the owner (we always have the rangers games on) and he is a nice old dude. You basically serve yourself buffet style and load up 3 sides for under 6 bucks, including all the pickles onions and homemade bread you can stack up. Or do a big plate with ribs, brisket and a sausage for around 8 bucks. They also have beef or pork ribs, quarter or half bbq chicken too. Fresh milkshakes for 1.70. Its on 183 south of Smitty’s on the right, right before mickey d’s. If you are on the road with some folks grab a family pack or 2 in the drive thru. Best deal in town. When we play cards we usually get smitty’s or family packs from chisholm.
City Market is most excellent. Kind of like the Smitty’s of Luling. Haven’t been there in several years because I live just off the square in Lockhart.
Blacks just started carrying babybacks, haven’t checked them out yet. They hit you hard on the sides over there, tho. They innovate more than the others, and some folks swear by them. They are open the most hours. The Blacks are very nice people.
Kreutz meat is a little dry, but I always get my thanksgiving and xmas smoked hams from there. 8 bucks a pound and worth it. They ship anywhere too. They also have texas pete hot sauce which is a little taste of NC home for me. I went to a wedding reception there and it was a hoot. Enormous facility.
There is some Lockhart intel for you. Go forth.

Excellent write-up
We didn’t stop on the way down because we thought some of the back roads might still be a bit flooded….but I’m bound and determined to go through when we leave. If I get my way, we’ll stop AT LEAST at Kreuz and Smittys (I’d also like to stop at Black’s while we’re there, but that might be asking a bit much since we have such a long drive back with a 2 year old and a pregnany wife who has lost all patience/reasonableness with her husband!
"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"
here's my report
I forgot to take pics, Ryan…my bad. Bear in mind, I am not a trained cook and am not a foodie by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have a passion for good bbq (which was born from a few long winters in Toledo working at a “bbq” restaurant and missing actual real bbq). I’ve eaten at a lot of famous bbq places (like you’d see on the Food Channel) and a lot more places that no one has ever heard of that were awesome. So here it is:
Based on the latest poll results, I decided to go to Kreuz. Pretty much everything stewmack said was right on. I got the shoulder and a sausage link. I found the brisket a little dry, but not detrimentally so. The flavor was a bit more complex than that of most briskets. It’s kind of hard to describe…a little spicy I guess is what it was. And I don’t know what kind of wood they smoke on, but it was definitely a unique flavor. Not “unique” as in “bad,” but as in “out of the ordinary.” It was pretty good. The sausage was EXCELLENT. Very, very good flavor, a perfectly crisp casing and the right amount of “zing.” The clear winner of this trip, in my opinion.
On the way out, I convinced my wife (through using “guilt tactics,” like “I do shit you want all the time….why can’t we just take another 5 minutes out of our trip and go down the street to Smitty’s?”) so let me delay the 2nd half of our roadtrip and go to Smitty’s and grab some to go. Let me take a minute to say this: both places had pretty cool atmosphere. Smitty’s seemed more authentic, but both weren’t exactly like the inside of a Dickey’s in West Plano. But I don’t like bbq for the atmosphere…I like the hot meat in my mouth (hmmmm…). For the sake of comparison, I got the same thing at Smitty’s (half a pound of shoulder and a sausage). They wrapped it up and I took it to the car and started to head out. We stopped across the street to gas up, and I decided that I should probably sample the Smitty’s while it was still hot (I was pretty full from Kreuz). I found the brisket to be absolutely otherworldly. I’ve eaten a lot of brisket, and this was, by far, the best I have ever had and it’s not even close. It was as tender as prime rib…the juices were running down my face and hands (hmmmm…). It defintely had a more “traditional” texas brisket flavor. I can see how everyone says you don’t need the sauce. Even a good sauce would’ve ruined it. I bestow a very rare award to Smitty’s brisket – I proclaim that I would kill a hobo for another taste. It was unreal. It nearly changed my life. That’s how F’ing good it was. Now to the “not-so-good:” the sausage was not very good. Maybe my tastebuds were ruined by eating the brisket first, but I found the sausage to be slightly above-average at best. The texture and crispness were both good, but it tasted Hillshire Farms-like. For rizzeal. I took the rest to my parent’s house in Plano (where we stopped for the night until coming home today) and the Smitty’s brisket was still pretty damn good after being wrapped up for 4 hours in butcher paper. I need to look into whether they do mail ordering or not (I know Kreuz does).
Based on this, here is my conclusion: If you’re a brisket person and you have not gone out of your way to go to Smitty’s, you are a fucking asshole and you should hate yourself forever. Ok…maybe that’s a little strong. But, in all honesty, I’d go pretty far out of my way to eat at Smitty’s again. My brother’s family lives in north Austin (about an hour from Lockhart) and I wouldn’t hesitate at all to drive way the hell out of the way to go back. In fact, I would probably build my itenerary around going to Smitty’s. It was that good. The best I’ve ever ever ever had, and that’s saying something.
Next on my list…Snow’s in Lexington. I hear that place is the only place that rivals Smitty’s.
"Does this effectively hide my thunder?"
awesome, i'm effn hungry now....going to North Austin in October...going to fuck Smitty's up
Thanks Bobby
