Case IN point against Ron Washington for Manager of the Year

It seems every game of late we have seen people complaining about the job Ron is doing, and tonight, I'd just like to point two things out that should show why he does not deserve the Manager of the Year award.

Star-divide

Bottom 5th, 2-2 ball game. Two on in scoring position, one out, Jose Bautista up to the plate. Scott Feldman stays in the game, gives up a 2 RBI double.

Feldman intentionally walks Vernon Wells.

Michael Kirkman comes in and pitches pretty darn well.

So what's the problem?

Two innings later, Wash goes to Darren O'Day. If he thought he may have gone to O'Day, why not have him ready and go to him when Bautista is up to bat?

Second point. Top 7, two on no one out, down 5-2, Matt Treanor would be batting. But, lo and behold, Christian Guzman gets up and pinch hits for Treanor, presumably to avoid the DP. Guzman proceeds to hit into a DP, runner moves to third.

If anyone still thinks Wash can get Manager of the Year, please give me a good reason as to why. I really have no clue why anyone would think that at this point, but I could be very very wrong.

when Guzman came up for Treanor.

The “gut” made him do it.

Wash could get manager of the year because of the way the team's record has improved this season.

For some reason, that’s how managers are judged, not by their decision-making skills and aptitude for their job, but by a factor they often have very little to do with.

That’s why Manager of the Year is a fucking meaningless award, like the Gold Gloves or the Latin Grammys.

Well, their place in the standings has.

Probably should’ve wrote that instead of record.

Yep, if you look at this team vs last years team

most of the changes are due to the long predicted collapse of the Angels.

A comparison of the 2 teams:

2010 WPct 54.3% RS/G 4,82 RA/G 4.29
2009 Wpct 53.7% RS/G 4,84 RA/G 4,57

Essentially the only difference is the .3 per game difference in Runs Allowed per game.

Because they're in first place,

while dealing with injuries to Cruz and Kinsler, 2 or their 3 best hitters. Their opening day starter was jettisoned to the bullpen. They’ve been playing most of the year with ownership in limbo. The bullpen management has been fine most of the year(Oh yeah, Fx2 is out). The big FA acquisition was a bigger bust than Feldman. Thru it all, they are a first place club.

Second guessing is a lot easier than saying, “Hey, we won last nite and the bullpen management in innings 6-9 really did the trick”

while through it all we are in 1st place,

it is only because of a monster june, a failing Angels team, and a surprise find in colbyashi. am i missing anything else?

Well, you can't dismiss an entire month. It's 1/6 of the year.

It counts just as much as a bad month.

Do you think if Feldman got out of the inning, or Guzman came thru with a hit, you would’ve written this post tonite?

Do you think if watched any other team as much as the Rangers, you’d see decisions backfire on their managers?

by scoop16 on Sep 7, 2010 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

you absolutely can...

when that month was built on an interleague schedule that was more favorable to the Rangers than any other team – dismiss games against NL teams that are 80 games below .500, and the Rangers are a .500 team

no, don’t dismiss it because it was after May and before July – but DO look at what impact playing the softest interleague schedule had on an otherwise very average team.

Katy Feeney has a more legitimate claim to this team’s success than Ron Washington.

this team is 21-30 against winning teams, so it helps tremendously when you get an extra 18 games against teams with losing records.

how can you fail to weigh the benefit of this when assessing this team over the course of the season?

by sam in so cal on Sep 8, 2010 8:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Personally

I think this team is roughly the same as last year’s team. The major difference being the long anticipated implosion of the Angels.

How the Rangers finish the season

will determine how well Wash does in the MOY voting. Right now it is probably Girardi’s to lose.

I don't give a fuck who wins...

…Rolaids Fireman Award (do they have that anymore?)
…Manager of the Year
…Comeback Player of the Year.

just the World Series right?

that I can completely agree with, I just got hacked off by a buddy of mine saying Wash should be Manager of the year, so I posted this rant.

Sorry if it’s a beat down to anyone, it’s starting to be one to me.

It's Case IN point, not case AND point

As in, you are concluding your case via one exceptionally strong point.

Saying case and point is pretty much a mute point, like axing a question at the liberry.

seriously, about that damn part of the thread

did you not read my reply to you? I said unions had their day and may again, but as for me i don’t want to be forced into one.

look, when it comes to baseball I am ignorant (and have admitted it numerous times recently) but I am trying to learn. If you have something constructive for me, please let me know. If not, please just roll your eyes and move on to the next thread, as i apparently wasted your time with this post as you just did with that comment.

to be fair

the 2011 fanpost stimulated a good deal of interesting discussion, and it isn’t as if there are a significant number of high quality (or even baseball related) fanposts being suggested as it is.

really

my only problem is that no one cares about Manager of the Year, and no one is arguing for Tommy Hunter to be in the playoff rotation. So these seem like manufactured issues to be arguing about.

As I mentioned in some thread elsewhere, LSB is at low-tide when it comes to really good, deep fanposts. At least Eric Price is actually putting some words down instead of repeating ’75 words 75 words 75 words 75 words 75 words ’ over and over again.

I can't imagine

who the Rangers would have as the 4th man in the rotation right now if not Hunter. It’s not like Holland, Harden, or Feldman has really done anything to lock it down. Hopefully one of them will do something the rest of the season to take it away from Hunter.

Kind of bizarre

to argue against why someone on your fav team shouldn’t win an award. Shouldn’t you as a fan be supportive?

I mean I'd be happy for them

personally. They have families and to win an award which is very tough to win would be a source of pride for their kids and spouses and parents. I bet the Ranger players would be happy for him. Why not the fans?

I'm sure we'd all be more supportive

If we believed he deserved it.

Personally, I’m not a fan of people getting awards they don’t deserve, even if it is the baseball equivalent of a Latin Grammy.
