On the plus side, Oakland lost, so the magic number is now down to 18.
Anthony Andro's game story talks about how the Rangers can't seem to avoid giving up the long ball to Toronto.
Michael Young has been nominated for the Clemente Award.

Fun for the week that it lasted but uh….it was a trend and nothing more…kinda like a Pet Rock with shorter lifespan.

The problem was that the Mantis wasn't the good luck charm
It was the picture of the guy getting hit by a baseball and the girl behind him laughing.

Well,
it appears Andrus is having his sophomore slump, so replacing him with Blanco probably doesn’t really hurt the team much. Much better for him to get rest and get some time off the Hamstring.

Well, Blanco has been having a kinda shitty defensive season
Although his career #‘s at short indicate that’s probably a fluke.
But yeah, I kind of agree – especially if this is what it takes to get Elvis out of the leadoff spot for the playoffs.

The feeling that this team is going to crush me again
I can’t seem to shake it. I hated all the division is over talk, because I’m one very superstitious baseball fan. Now I’m becoming worried that my fears are coming true. Or worse, that cosmically somehow my negative attitude is causing all this. I need help.
I sort of felt like this
When everyone was talking about playoff rosters and setting up the rotation.
And then I dreamed we won the World Series and I stayed up all night screaming and partying and still went to work the next day, and I knew I’d jinxed the whole thing.

Two fewer games, the As gained no ground. 3 weeks left, that’s a big lead.
We're dribbling out the clock and more seconds came off yesterday ...our odds have to improve when that happens.

There is not one single aspect of this team that is performing acceptably right now. Hitting, fielding, pitching, mental game….all bad.
who to blame
I blame Newberg for mentioning in one of his Reports wanting the Rangers to clinch at home instead of on the road.
Newberg's tweets were driving me nuts during the game last night.

The game was irritating enough without Newberg pissing me off too.

I have to work at balancing my Twitter
I have a bunch of baseball followers, but I don’t feel like I have a lot of insight as far as that goes. I tend to retweet actual baseball news, or I tweet whatever’s going on at the game I’m at or whatever.
But, it’s also my personal Twitter, and I have a lot of friends who don’t give a shit about baseball, so I also tend to tweet non-baseball things. I try not to tweet stupid shit like, “I’m going to the store”, but I admit to tweeting this last night:

EG's article was interesting.
It’s always amusing to hear MLB crawfishing over a bad call. That rule isn’t written in legalese. It’s not hard to glean its meaning from its plain language. What it all boils down to is that the umpire and his crew didn’t know the rule, made a call based upon their ignorance, and now they’re trying to save face by pretending the rule is open to interpretation. Isn’t intellectual dishonesty fun?
"Ok, post your favorite moment of the Tom Hicks era
Mine is today when he sold the team." - t ball
yeah, MLB's response was sad
it basically boiled down “don’t put our umpires in a position where they would have to make a call that reflects an understanding of the rulebook”.
Yes, interesting...
…though I wish for once people would complain about sports officiating after a win. Then it wouldn’t seem like bitching and excuse making.

Speaking of the 2006 Cards and possible silver linings...
they were up 7 games on September 20. 8 days later they had a one game lead. They came together to win 2 of 3 and not only make the playoffs with a 83-78 record but also win the World Series. This was a team that was in first place for most of the season.
Not sure what really happened and how they won the World Series that year…they were fortunate enough to go up against an inexperienced and undermanned Padres team, a Mets team that we now know had a loser’s pedigree and an inexperienced Tiger team. They had also kicked quite a few of their other opportunities to win it all with some really good teams in year’s previous (2004 WS loss to Red Sox, 2005 NLCS loss to Houston).
Point being, the Cards bonded together at the end of the regular season when they had to face their maker and the possibility of throwing down the biggest choke job in the history of the sport. Collectively, they fought thru adversity together.
The same thing happened in 2005 with the White Sox. They had a comfortable lead all season long (sound familiar?) and had it up to 9.5 games on September 7. On September 22 the lead was down to 1.5 games.
The White Sox did the same thing the Cards did and when they went to post-season, they seemed to play with an extra confidence. They had faced baseball mortality (being called the worst chokers in history) and stared it down together.
I also know the ‘96 Rangers pulled the same stunt in September and were knocked out in 4 games by the MF Yankees but I’m just looking for silver linings if we continue to shit the walls for the next week.

Easier road
from the NL? Then it’s anybody’s game in just a 7 game series.
I see some similarities
STL was missing Edmonds and Eckstein (yes, he was important to them) for a lot of the 2nd half. Those guys got healthy just in time for the postseason. Maybe that’s Kinsler, Cruz, and Hambone (if they can all be healthy on October 6th).
It also helped that Isringhausen’s gas can wasn’t available that postseason, so LaRussa couldn’t let him lose important October games.
I choose to think that was the way of the baseball gods paying us back for 1985, 1987 (STL couldn’t win in the Twinkiedome), 1996 (gagged a 3-1 NLCS lead to ATL), 2004, and 2005.

Holy fuck that's a lot of platitudes
I guess those Cards had the good face, and pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and came together at the right time and gutted it out and omfg this is killing me.
Look, save the rah rah for your college football shit. Baseball isn’t about rah rah, its about consistency. its about going out and doing your job day in and day out. Getting on base. Advancing Runners (to home if possible). Stealing bases and not making outs on the basepaths. Pitching and pitching to contact. making plays in the field. That kind of shit.

yanks have a current 3 game skid
and the rays just came off of one.
the problem is the injuries, the fact that we can’t jump on anyone early and our pitchers can’t give us a shut down inning.
The bright side is Feliz is getting a much needed rest going in to the final push.
Here’s the thing – each time Cruz went down it took him a few days to get his timing back. Once he does, as well as Kins, they should be able to carry this offense until JH comes back.
Finally, Hughes is being skipped Sunday for Mosely (big break) and Cabrera COULD miss next week. Huge break.
1 win can turn this thing around. Holland delivers it tonight.
Jack Daddy
You can leave it as the problem is the injuries.
If Kinsler, Cruz and Hamilton are ready to go at playoff time, the team has a shot. If not, it is pretty much game over.

I guess you can say that about all the pitchers
All the pitchers have looked pretty dicy in September so far.

"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin
BGL has been great...
except in his last start. I don’t think the defense has helped, but I think Lee and Lewis just hit a rough spot and the same time and it’s compounded by the fact that Harden and Feldman haven’t been good all year. Hopefully Holland can build off of his last start tonight.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Could be defense
could also be a lot of pitchers going through a dead arm phase simultaneously. Normally all pitchers, even aces, have cold streaks at some point. We may just be seeing the coincidence of a bunch of them lining up.

Just taking a quick swipe at some stats
For September, the pitching BABIP is .299, which is a little worse than league average (.294) but not grossly so. The team BABIP is .284. Maybe there is some regression in there.
Some pitchers, notably Hunter and Wilson, have relied on much lower than average BABIP to put up their stats all year and may have the law of big numbers starting to work on them.
However, no matter how you look at September, there is always the chance its just SSS noise.

Sir Warwick Harrow: I know him, and I think he's a psychotic lowlife.
Mal: And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community.
Ok I have a question for smarter minds than mine:
Ok so I’ve seen lots and lots of posts that seem to say that a pitchers BABIP is largely outside of his control, and a pitcher with a .140 is likely to see regression, to somewhere in the .280-.320 range which is typically more average. And these same people say that strikeouts are a much better stat to predict future performance by a given pitcher. I have no issues with any of that, i agree, my issue is with the use of Ks per 9 as the leading strike out indicator. Here’s why: if two identical pitchers face 10 batters, and one pitcher’s BABIP is .1000 and the others is .0, and they roughly will have 3 strikeouts per 10 batters, 1 walk and 6 balls in play. The pitcher with the BABIP of .1000 will have a K/9 of 27 (because every out was a strikeout) while the other pitcher will have a K/9 of 9. (3 strikeouts, 6 found/flyouts). The pitchers are identical in skill, and assuming the BABIP regresses their strikeout abilities will remain the same, but due to luck their K/9 can be greatly different. I much prefer K/BB or a K% to K/9 but it seems that K/9 is the favorite of most sabers and I don’t understand why. Am I missing something? It’s probably one of those things that you just have to look at the whole profile of the pitcher and not just one number, but I am just not a fan of the K/9 number because it doesn’t truly give an indicator of how good a pitcher is at striking people out.
my better is better than your better.

tl;dr
"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.
Then he grounded out weakly to second.
Just as their BABIPs will regress, so will their K/9
If suddenly that 1.000 BABIP player, in 10 more ABs, gets 3 Ks:1BB:4 FB:2GB, his BABIP drops to .500, his K/9 drops to 13.5, but his K/BB and K% stay the same.
K/BB is nice and K% has its’ value, but I would I follow along with what you said there at the end about one stat not being the be-all, end-all profile of a pitcher. All three of those stats are prone to variation of umpires, opponents faced, luck, and probably a multitude of other factors.
And 10 ABs is a really small sample size that won’t tell you much overall about a player.

how do you know
the pitcher with the 1.000 BABIP isn’t a victim of shitty defense, while the other guy has a great defense behind him?
If the pitchers truly are identical in skill — which is determined a lot more than just K/9 — then your BABIP numbers are an indicator more of that pitcher’s defense than the pitcher.
by elvis1isking on Sep 8, 2010 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions
It probably should be K%. In general, they're really close and it doesn't make much of a difference.
I believe David Appleman defended it by saying it’s just because K/9 is the more common stat and he didn’t think the change in accuracy was enough to go away from that.

Josh likes to run into walls in the corner outfield positions too.

The entire concept of moving him off LF involves getting another good LF'er.
You’re telling me you wouldn’t want Hamilton’s bat instead of what little we’ve gotten from 1B the last two seasons?
If you can upgrade 1B with the reigning AL MVP and not lose too much in LF, I say do it.

more realistic

More realistic, sure
But that’s not the hypothetical we’re discussing.
If you can get a guy like Crawford to play LF, then I think you move Hamilton to 1B to keep him healthy and let him mash.

Of course
the thinking is you get more Games out of Hamilton at 1B than you will out of him in the OF.
I do think that because of the injury prone nature of this team, we need to look for a position player, like, say, a 3B/COF guy instead of a DH, so that DH can be manned by some combination of Young/Hamilton/Cruz/Kinsler to try to extend their shelf lives.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
injuries happen
It’s just as plausible that Hamilton pulls a hamstring legging out a double.
As long as we have Hamilton, I’d rather maximize his value. That means playing him in LF.
I totally agree with you on your point about the DH. Not sure there’s a player like that available that can provide the offense of a DH and fill those roles, but maybe the added value of giving those players extra DH days will be enough to make up for it.
by elvis1isking on Sep 8, 2010 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions
"Offense of a DH"
oddly, the average DH looks like he does somewhere around 775 OPS give or take 20 points most years. Hopefully we can find someone who can do that and isn’t a zero on defense.
If you wanted to maximize Hamilton’s value, you’d put him in CF. I doubt he holds up significantly longer in LF than in CF.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
debatable
LF vs CF. I think he’s actually more valuable in LF but it’s debatable. I’d actually prefer Hamilton in RF, but I’m not sure I like Cruz in LF…
And, I don’t think it’s as easy to find a COF/CIF/DH type that can hit a .775 OPS. I haven’t even looked at who would be available this offseason, but no one is really coming to mind right now.
Getting a league average 1B (or better) and/or addressing catcher are other ways to offset any deficiencies in targeting that type of player for DH.
Lots of options — depends on what’s available.
I grant you
he is better defensively in LF, but his bat crushes any other CFs bat by such a huge margin, and he is still a plus defensively in CF.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
I would seriously consider...
Figuring out a rotation for Josh to maximize his value. Something along the lines of 25%DH 25% 1B 40%LF 10% CF… It all depends on who the team expects to play at 1b and DH next year… But it seems like we could do things to keep him fresh over the 162 game season, and then in the playoffs put him wherever it makes us best regardless of risk (centerfield? Left field?). There are lots of options and decisions to be made in the offseason.
my better is better than your better.
by rangerjake on Sep 8, 2010 10:56 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I'll come out and say it
if the team thinks that Josh Hamilton can’t stay healthy in the outfield and needs to either DH or play 1b, then they should probably consider trading him.
Probably 20-25% of Hamilton’s value is that he is an excellent outfielder. Take that away, he’s a good player but not exceptional. If you think he needs to play half the time at DH or 1b, then they’d be better off sending him straight up to St Louis for Rasmus, or something along those lines.
Go Rice Owls!
Turning Josh into the AL's Pujols means we should trade him??
NO!!
I don't care what we did in June!!
Just went to fangraphs to look at CF
It made me sad to see that Marlon Byrd has produced 4.4 WAR this year.
On a happier note, since the Diamondbacks seem to be implosion mode is anyone interested in trying to grab Chris Young in the offseason?
Hit .345/.470/.815 this year at 27 years old (as of 3 days ago). He’s signed through 2013 for ~$7m and then a 2014 option at $11m. Do we consider moving pieces to get a full-time CF to allow Josh to play left or wait for Engel to arrive?

I think he’d be a much better option that Rasmus, and he seems to finally have turned a corner with his bat. I think it’s imperative we find a CF this offseason. Borbon is clearly not the answer, and who knows how Beltre will end up. Another guy I’d consider is Bourne. He may not be much of an improvement offensively than Borbon, but he can at least find his way on base in important situations and steal a base. He’s also got a much better arm than Borbon and is an asset defensively.

I love it when a plan comes together
I left right after that when it looked like the rain was letting up. I stopped by the store and came home, and when I opened up my email there was a shiny present in the form of a meeting reschedule notice for my 3:30. So now not only am I home, the shopping is done, and I don’t have a conference call! Yay me!!!

No renter's insurance?
Also, Aquastuff is not waterproof?
We have renter's insurance.
But I’d rather just not lose the stuff to begin with.
My Dallas Aquastuff is just like normal stuff, but I own it so that increases its value from normal to “fucking awesome.”

It's already there
I came back from school and Cooper was already flooded at 10am at Park Row. I have to go to work in a few hours, and I have to cross Johnson Creek to get there.

there's a manmade lake around our office that is bordered by a concrete wall...
usually, the water is about 3-4 feet below the top of the wall……right now, I don’t see the wall and the water is about 1/4 of the way up the surrounding hill…..
that was a lot of rain…

I was wondering how
TB can keep a guy hitting .203 in the #5 spot. I thought maybe we should look at Pena for the 1B job in the offseason, but I didn’t realize he was hitting so poorly. How do you go from .284 to .203 in the span of 4 seasons?

O my Lord
I started reading this article, then my eyes started bleeding. How hard is it to simply do the following:
Twins: expected lineup, Span, Valencia, Mauer, Young, Hudson, Cuddyer, Kubel, Hardy, Thome. and hopefully Morneau. 85.6 Batting runs (39.1 if Span is replaced by Morneau).
Rangers: expected lineup, Hamilton, Cruz, Guerrero, Kinsler, Young, Murphy, Andrus, Moreland, Molina. (assumes Hamilton in CF, so Borbon over Murphy). 96.3 Batting runs (subtract 18.8 with Borbon in CF and Hamilton in Left instead of Murphy).
Reds: expected lineup, Phillips, Bruce, Votto, Stubbs, Gomes, Rolen, Cabrera, Hernandez.
71.9 Batting runs
etc…. (connection is far too slow to finish this).
Sir Warwick Harrow: I know him, and I think he's a psychotic lowlife.
Mal: And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community.
Lineup for tonight...

Three clubs in on Darvish
According to multiple reports, the New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays have been scouting Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish late this season, but so have the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves, suggesting MLB clubs are simply putting forth their due diligence.
Darvish, however, has never expressed clear interest in coming to the U.S. to play ball, telling reporters two springs ago at the World Baseball Classic that he had no desire to jump to Major League Baseball.
The 24-year-old would have to be posted by his club the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, the same process in which stars such as Ichiro Suzuki and Daisuke Matsuzaka came to the states.
In this process, MLB teams place a sealed bid, and the highest bid wins the right to negotiate with the player.
Darvish’s presence on the market for MLB teams this winter could change how big-money clubs approach their attempts to improve over the off-season, including which clubs get in on the bidding for Cliff Lee and other free agent starting pitchers.

Isn't winning an auction to sign a bigtime japanese player
the ultimate Pyrrhic victory these days? By the time you pay the fee, then pay the player, you pay some of the highest prices in baseball for a lottery ticket.
