NY Times: The Cost of Stadia
Interesting New York Times article about how some municipalities are still paying off the debt associated with sports stadia that no longer exist.

Hasn't there been
study after study done showing the building of stadiums is a zero-sum exercise to taxpayers/bond holders?

I think it's negative sum
Although Arlington paid off TBiA fairly quickly, and I’m not sure how much money TBiA has brought to arlington.

Reminds me of
Montreal’s Olympic Stadium. Massive initial construction cost overruns, constant structural problems over the years which have been exorbitantly expensive to repair, and now it would cost $700 million to demolish it due to its structural peculiarities. It has to stay up because it’s too expensive to take it down. Bizarre.

Of all the ballparks I went to
back when I went to all the parks in baseball, Montreal’s was easily the worst. What a steaming pile of crap. You expect it from the frenchies though.

Well
Frenchies are also responsible for poutine and Gabriel Faure so don’t be too hard on them.

You think TBiA has brought more or less than $135 million?
The city’s $135 million bond package for Rangers Ballpark was paid off in 10 years instead of the projected 20 years.
The construction costs were about $191 million.
These cities
should really force teams to pony up more money to pay off the stadiums over time.
But this is just a classic example of the perverse incentives in government spending. A local politician has very clear incentives to support such incredibly bad deals. They’re not going to be around in 30 years when the team is paying for a vacant lot, but they’ll certainly risk losing re-election if they’re the one who stands up to the team and results in them moving to a suburb or a different city.
Go Rice Owls!
Speaking of stadia
When are they going to put a roof over TBiA? Or just move to Dallas already. Arlington sucks. It’s too close to Ft. Worth.
