After the 1st round its best record determines HFA. that way the WC doesn’t get HFA in the 1st round no matter what but could get it in the 2nd

I think Jeff Sullivan’s opening article about the Cy Young is simply awesome. While there are a lot of seemingly obvious points in there, far too few people make them. The Cy Young award is not obviously a “who has the best FIP” contest.
Oh, if I were a Mariners fan I’d be so torn. Jeff Sullivan may be my favorite baseball blogger, yet the other M’s bloggers are so obnoxious I’d probably end up being driven away from their sites.

but he isn't just talking about predicting who will win
he’s acknowledging that since the Cy Young award is meant to reward past performance, these statistics that are designed to be predictive may not be the ideal measures by which to judge who actually was the best pitcher. We were talking about that the other day, when someone said Cliff Lee has been worth 3 wins to the Rangers, even though the Rangers are only 3-8 in his starts.
People look to sabermetric statistics to be descriptive measures, when in fact they were generally designed to be predictive measures. It isn’t obvious at all that the pitcher with the best FIP was the best pitcher in the league, only that he’s probably the most likely be the best pitcher in the league going forward.
