Thursday morning Rangers things

Hey, a win!  A strong effort from Derek Holland last night, along with the Bats getting on track, stopped the Rangers' losing streak at five games, keeping them from matching their longest losing streak of the season.

Anthony Andro writes in his game story that the mood was upbeat in the Ranger clubhouse after the game, in the wake of a blowout win that had strong pitching, strong hitting, and quality defense.

Richard Durrett has some post-game thoughts on the win.

The notes on the Rangers website discuss Cliff Lee being slated to pitch again this weekend against the Yankees, and says that Esteban German will not be eligible for post-season play.  However, from what I've seen in the rules, given that the Rangers have players who will still be injured and thus unable to play come October, they could add German to the post-season roster to replace one of those players.

Andro's notes talk about Lee, and about Ron Washington wanting to be able to use the same lineup consistently, even though he hasn't been able to for most of this season.

I am much less pissed with these guys today.

I was in and out during the game, what was Holland’s pitch count when he was pulled? Aside from some control issues, he looked pretty great.

Joey Matches mentions he was up in the zone a lot last night.

He must’ve had some truly awesome swing and miss stuff to get away with that against the Jays.

Holland should’ve struck out Buck in 3 pitches to start the 5th — yet none of them were called strikes.

He ended up getting out of the jam later but he could’ve cruised through that inning easily otherwise

Looks like there were only 3 "low" pitches anyway

Im sure there were more that got fouled off or hit but only 3 pitches by Texas pitchers were in the bottom half inch of the zone.

2 were called balls which is bad but that to me shows Holland wasn’t even trying to throw low or was missing very badly up which is not good

I was watching tornado coverage

for the first couple of innings but what I saw from the Dutch Oven (Game Score 67) was solid.

His heater was touching 95 and I think (LSB Do-gooder correct if wrong) he struck out the side in the 5th inning. 8Ks in 5IPs doesn’t lie.

I’m also thinking Kinsler needs to be our lead-off hitter for the rest of the regular & post season. Throw Tiny E towards the back of the pack.

That Michael Young is pretty good as well, especially when his team needs him.

As far as Murphy, he appears to be their 3B for the forseeabie future, until they can make an offseason move.

Elvis?

I know his walk rate has declined from earlier in the year but he still draws plenty IMO.

His problem this year has been hes not pulling the ball enough. Hes waiting deep into the pitch to swing and thus not getting any power behind it and not being able to pull the ball. Thats fine if its because hes working on being more patient and hopefully next year he can be patient while still pulling, and having power. But if not then its gonna be his average not his amount of walks that keep him from being a good leadoff man

by bigsteve on Sep 9, 2010 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Borbon.

Which is why I don't think he'll be leadoff for us.

I think he could develop that patience, but it will come at the cost of another part of his game. His game has always been swing early in the count and put the ball in play and use his speed as a weapon. This year he started trying to get deeper into counts and then would press and started K’ing a ton more.

Ideally Elvis maintains and keeps developing his eye at the plate while also pulling the ball when he does swing more and is leadoff for us for the next 4 years. And Borbon hits 9th creating a deadly force at the bottom and top of the order

Right

I understand why, having Hamilton and Murphy both in the lineup is the best lineup we’ve got. Hamilton is a better CF than Murphy. Ergo, play Josh in center. But injuries just scare me out there. I know they can happen in LF too, but his value is maxed and less potential for injury in LF, even during the playoffs.

Hamilton better CF defensively

than Murph.

If you’re gonna play Hamilton and Murph, then Josh has to be in CF.

I blame all this on Borbon. No player has frustrated me as much this year as he has. His range just doesn’t make up for all the other problems he has had.

by elvis1isking on Sep 9, 2010 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I think we have to do what we can

to get Murphy in the line-up no matter what…he’s had a very quiet .894 OPS since the AS Break.

Maybe that means Francouer rides the pine in post-season…can he play 1B when we’re up against LH pitching?

And I echo the thoughts on Judy. I was seduced by the lifted skirt and perfumed inner thigh of last year’s .376 OBP (I thought he was going to be a break out star before the season) but when you get to watch him on a day to day basis, you find out very quickly that he’s simply not smart enough to play in The Show.

I shudder to think what he’d do in the glare of the playoffs.

This has been a pretty "dumb" team overall this year.

I think the problem might lie in the coaching staff, myself.

I really do wonder if they don’t spend too much time catering to the clubhouse’s egos and not enough time making sure they’re ready to play ball.

I'm not sure

bringing in Vlad, who was always extremely talented, but also a little goofy at times helped that much. One of the reasons I really would rather not see Manny here.

Agree

Vlad appears to have carte blanche to do whatever he wants. I think that has rubbed off on some of the other guys. You’re kind of stuck since it doesn’t appear anyone on the coaching staff does much with Vlad so it becomes harder to reign the other guys in…

He’s gonna ask “who do you pay?” He’s asking about Vlad, Lee, and Hamilton.

I won’t be able to listen, unfortunately.

Personally, my answers are:

- Don’t do anything with Hambone. 2 years of arbitration will be just fine. Don’t rush into a long-term deal until he proves he can stay healthy

- Vlad- no thanks. Move Young to DH and sign/trade for a passable 3rd baseman

- Lee- I’d love for him to be here, but I don’t think this is a franchise that should be handing out CC Sabathia contracts

Agree with all three

1) I’d maybe consider offering Hamilton an extension, but it has to be associated with the team also getting a CF so Hamilton never plays out there again. And it’d have to be a somewhat team-friendly deal to account for the injury risk.
2) I almost want to see Vlad re-signed to watch Adam go completely bonkers. But there are better options.
3) No. Cliff Lee will not be worth what he’ll get paid over the next 5 years.

I think he'll be worth it in sum,

but with the value so likely to be heavily frontloaded I’m not sure it would make sense longterm for a team without a Yankees-type budget.

A couple of months ago, when the rest of the roster looked better, I would’ve done it to maximize the possibilities for the next few years, but now it’s looking like the positional player holes haven’t been filled as well as we’d hoped.

by Closure GT on Sep 9, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I dunno.

Hamilton, Kinsler, Cruz is likely to be a pretty salty core for the next couple of years. Theoretically, finding a replacement level catcher and 1B should be pretty easy and keep the team in contention. Injuries will always be an issue as long as that is the core, but that’s 3 guys with the potential to put up MVP years.

There’s also a good mix of defense (Elvis, Borbon) and offense (Young, Murphy, replacement level DH and 1B) that I think the position players can at least hold up their end of the bargain of giving you above average to elite offense and defense.

by GhettoBear04 on Sep 9, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure we can afford that much defense

offensively unless we get someone who can bring some pain at 1B. Having 3 or 4 dead spots offensively really cuts down your scoring.

Right now, its tough to see anything but all glove no hit guys at SS, CF, and C, I’m not sure the offense can afford an average bat at 1B with those guys not bringing much.

by DJCahill on Sep 9, 2010 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, not replacement level at 1B, you're right

But I disagree that an average 1B wouldn’t work. Outside of SS, CF, and C, the team is made up of good hitters at all the positions except 1B right now. An average 1B gives you something like a .350 wOBA over the course of the season, slotting firmly into the MY-tier of hitters on this team. 6 good hitters on a team should be good enough, especially considering park and the defense that you are getting from 6-7 of the spots.

Unless Marlon Byrd or Carl Crawford magically reappears in our outfield

No. Keep Moreland on 1B. He has been surprisingly efficient. If he gets hurt for a little bit, then you call up Chris Davis for a short stint (it is an annual tradition) to help remind you of why Moreland is so solid.

A Hamilton-less outfield doesn’t look great. Cruz, Murphy, Borbon? That’s not terrible. However Borbon can’t hit well at all, and Cruz is exceedingly likely to go down with an extended injury. It is then that our outfield looks pitiful without Hammy.

I can’t even imagine going to a game anymore unless I had prime seats, and the only way to get those are season tickets, and frankly, I don’t want to see that many live games. Unless I get corporate tickets, I’m not going to sporting events anymore.

I wonder how much of the improved TVs and HDTV is starting to cut into ticket sales.

83%, I believe.

He threw out the $80 (EIGHTY!!!) parking for the Jets as “a small part of the reason.” When someone mentioned he can sit at home and watch the Red Zone Channel. He asked if people really did that, watching multiple games at home.

It was weird to me. I like going to a game now and then, maybe even once a year if I could, but the benefits of watching at home just seem so damn intuitive to me.

not to mention that they’re usually cold, being in October, November or December.

Let’s see, sit in my warm house, drink cheap and good beer of my choosing, watch every play closely enough to see what happens, and pay $0

But it’s not so fun it outweighs being able to see any and every game you want, being comfortable, keeping up with every game as they happen, being warm and comfortable on your couch, getting replays and analysis, having great angles and a clear view of every play, getting to make our own food and, of course, saving a ton of money on more than a very rare basis.
