Coming to Texas: Need Advice
Some of us Bay Area Rangers faithful will be coming to Arlington for the ALDS home games, presumably on Sat / Sun. Coming in Friday afternoon, and leaving Monday morning. I'd like to get some input from the locals about where to stay while in the Metroplex (what areas / hotel), where to eat, and what to do during the times when the Rangers are not playing.
I'm assuming the best airport to fly into is DFW. Should I stay in downtown Dallas? What are the areas with good nightlife? Is traffic from Dallas to Arlington bad on a weekend? Will I need a rental car?
Update: Based on feedback below, we'll be staying at the Embassy Suites in downtown FTW. We got the rental car. Now just need to figure out restaurants and bars and other stuff to do. Must include at least one BBQ joint.

if you want a direct flight, dfw is your only option
i would stay in uptown. hit lower greenville for drinks and blue goose for some tex mex. downtown dallas’ west end and downtown ft worth are other options as well. and yes, you’ll need a car.
Don't do that

lower greenville???

yeah – go to the green room in deep ellum, too.

I live in dallas & work in downtown dallas… however, I would suggest staying in Downtown fort worth and hitting up some Joe T’s margaritas and sundance square at night after games….

wouldn't downtown Dallas be a better option for Bars/Clubs and partying in general?

People have their preferences
I love Downtown Ft Worth. Sundance Square is amazing. Bars, restaurants, clubs, all within easy walking distance and its safe.
I prefer Ft.Worth
more laid back.. everything is within walking distance from hotel downtown…

oh ok
so the bars/clubs in downtown Dallas are more spread out?

Well in Dallas
at least from my experience, you have West End, Deep Ellum, Uptown, Greenville. All nice areas but not connected. Dallas has DART which helps but Ft Worth, at least Sundance Square is all neatly compact into one area.
the city of dallas could really turn all that around

im familiar with downtown dallas and addison
not so much deep ellum or greenville….. but downtown-uptown dallas and addison you are driving bar to bar….. and yeah what big steve said below.. you can park free in downtown fort worth and walk to 20 bars and 20 restaraunts in a 6 square block area if you want

If you desired something a little different one night, Denton's only 40 minutes straight North on 1-35
easy to find good live music, cheaper drinks, less crowded, nice people, if you wish you can smoke inside, the bars and restaurants are all close together…

Yep.
That’s the big thing FTW has over Dallas, it’s a hell of a lot safer to go out.

Dallas is plenty safe.
Just stick to the right areas. Same as Ft. Worth. Go to shitty areas, and it’s dangerous. In FACT, that’s just like every city, everywhere.
I go out often in both cities.
Fort Worth’s popular night life areas are safer than Dallas’s.

I mean, Addison and Uptown are better than Lower Greenville and Deep Ellum.
But even still you hear about people getting shot/robbed in those places from time to time. In Lower Greenville, Deep Ellum not only do you hear about that kind of stuff you hear about it often. You really don’t hear about that stuff in downtown Fort Worth much (I bartended down there for 4 years). Occasionally you might hear of shit like that in Northside, but not nearly as much as in Dallas. What it comes down to is Police presence, Fort Worth’s is just better. Not that I care either way. If you gave me a choice I’d much rather go out in Dallas.

Nevermind
I would fly into DFW
Find a hotel in downtown Ft Worth. You have plenty of bars, restaurants, clubs right around there.
Take one day and go to the State Fair. Hop on the TRE (link here)in downtown Ft Worth and go to Victory Station. Get off and switch to the DART Green Line (link here return schedule here) to Fair Park Station. It drops you off right outside the gate to the State Fair. Drop some cash on tickets and go try all the great food (everything is fried, and i mean everything). Scarf down a few Fletchers corn dogs and Shiner.
Around the Ballpark isn’t much to be honest. If you are football fans maybe go a few hours before a game and take a tour of Jerryworld. Its like $20 bucks but pretty cool especially if you’ve never been there.
Sherlocks is at I-30and Collins. Its probably the best bar near the park. My personal favorite is Fox and Hound north of the Stadium on Collins. Great little pool hall with tons of flat screens and nice beer selection.
Go to Texas de Brazil one night for dinner in Ft Worth. Its pricey but you eat as much meat as you want. Literally.
Disregard those DART links
Those are weekday links I just realized.
Go to the DART website and you can find the green line schedules for the day you may need
thanks
will definitely look into these options

Hotel suggestion:
Depending on how much you are looking to spend on a hotel, I would recommend staying at the Arlington Sheraton. It is within walking distance to RBiA, so you do not have to pay for parking. It is also nice just walking back to the hotel when the game is over instead of having to fight traffic. It is not the cheapest hotel, but it is clean, it has a huge pool, and the convenience is worth it for me. Plus, this could be your view:

that sounds good to an extent
but if one’s looking to get drunk and party after the game, Arlington ain’t the best spot for that. It’d be better to drive back to Dallas or Fort Worth, park the car and start drinking rather than have to drive back to Arlington after drinking elsewhere.

by Baseball North on Sep 9, 2010 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions
Well this way you could get drunk at the game,
then stumble/crawl your way back to the hotel instead of having to drive. Just beware of crazy drunks who have the same idea. My wife and I drove up to watch the Rangers play the Cubs this year. On our way back to the hotel, a drunk guy looked at me and said, “The only good Cubs fan is a dead Cubs fan.” I almost said, “Dirkatron?” He definitely had a crazy look in his eyes.

If you like beer and stay in Fort Worth:
The Flying Saucer is pretty much a must. Almost 100% certain you’ve never seen that many beers in a single bar before.
I am also sure you will spend more for a beer there than you did at any other bar.

I've never gone in but that place always looked douchey to me.
The Library and that Irish type bar down Houston by the wine bar are good stops.
No liquor, but I got the the flying saucer here in Addison all the time and it's the shit
My homies all have plates on the wall (200 different beers).
"I don't do a straight up Mitch for Butler" -- stupid booyakasha
Whenever I walked past the one in FTW I always heard
terrible bands and saw douchebag walking around it. That could be because of the bar next to it and Barnes and Noble, but that was always the impression I got.
They do have douches on guitars on the weekends, stay out during the weekends
"I don't do a straight up Mitch for Butler" -- stupid booyakasha
I'm not sure I've ever been to a bar on the weekend that doesn't have a high douche factor though.
Maybe I’ll give it a try sometime.

They raised the price to $3.
Monday is Fire Sale night; every draft pint (excluding some belgium ales) is $3.
Tuesday is Trivia night; Fat Tire is $3 and they have some trivia thing going. This is douchebag night.
Wednesday is Brewery Night; they have one select beer each time where you buy the beer and get to keep the glass.
Thursday is rare beer night; they tap a new rare beer each week.
Sunday is $3 Texas beer night.
Yeah, I go there a lot.

Also, if you are a fan of Fried Chicken and Sweet Tea
Chicken Express. God did bless us with his own hand with that place.
Not that Chicken E isn't good....
but someone is coming here from another state and Chicken E is the height of food in North Texas? I’d aim higher than fast food. Head for the BBQ or some of the excellent Downtown Ft Worth/Dallas mexican food.
Just saying, if they want something quick and cheap sometime
even if it’s just for the sweet tea (just $1 for a large) it sure is worth a trip.

I would think a piano bar would be pretty lame and not my first choice for a bar. The longer your there, the more fun you have. Or is it the higher the bar tab, the more fun you have. Either way you got to bar hop and at least give it an hour or so. You will be having fun in no time.

Babes
I keep hearing about this place, I’ve always known of it but never been.
Looks like theres one in Carrollton and one in the far ass north end of Frisco, maybe i’ll check it out

I think the one in Carrollton shut down...every time I went there it was jammed so I don't know what happened.
I think the Roanoke one is the original…
Sweetie Pie Ribeyes in Decatur is titteriffic.

You need to.
Their food is awesome. Home-style cooking at its finest. There’s like 7 choices of meat, and they bring you all the vegetables/rolls and stuff that you can eat. Easily one of my favorite places to eat.

I don't think so.
I haven’t heard that anyway. Just checked their website and they don’t have anything about it either. But yes, Rudy’s is pretty much awesome.

Since you're staying in Ft. Worth
You probably don’t need advice on where to go out in Dallas, but here is a list of bars that I enjoy (and I can’t emphasize enough: DO NOT go to Deep Ellum or the West End, period. They are dead, as in no businesses…with even fewer people.)
Meddlesome Moth
Three Sheets
The Loon
The Quarter
Idle Rich
Blackfriar Pub
Bar Celine (back of Park Restaurant)
Old Monk
Vickery Park
Capital Pub
Just google these joints if you are coming in to Dallas.
You go to the moth a lot?
i live pretty close to it

Been there a few times, yeah.
I really dig the place…it’s a little farther than I like to go so I don’t go as often as others maybe. I’m guessing you live in the design district?

yeah
i live in one of the apartment buildings right there next to the moth.

Old Monk is where I used to go all the time...loved that place.

I think they just reopened the Rahr Brewery in Fort Worth...
Every Saturday from 1-3 they have a deal where you buy a pint glass for $10 and you get 3 “free” beers.
It used to be really cool until a lot of people started showing up. It’s still fun, but it’s getting to be too crowded.
The bars on West 7th are pretty good.
Note: It’s across the Trinity so you’ll have to drive.
7th Haven
Poag Mahone
Lola’s
Capital Bar
Fred’s (diner with good burgers)
Pop’s Safari (for the cigars)
If you want to stay within walking distance, there’s 8.0s and Flying Saucer near the court house. I prefer Flying Saucer. Patty Red’s is also pretty good if you walk South enough. If you like jazz, there’s Scatt, but I remember cover being ridiculous the one time I tried it. And of course Billy Bob’s.
Restaurant suggestions:
Ellerbe’s
Fuzzy’s Tacos
Angelo’s
Gloria’s
Patrizio’s
Buttons
Things to do:
Tour Cowboy’s stadium
Hangman’s house of Horrors
Rahr Brewery tour
Four Day Weekend improv comedy
I didn't know what a mancrush was. Derek Holland showed me.

If you're staying downtown FTW and you're looking for nightlife and places to eat...
Well, you’re already there. There’s all kinds of stuff in and around Sundance Square. There’s some other stuff if you go up North Main into the Stockyards as well.

Sundance Square blows
Boring and sterile. Too many chains. Flying Saucer is a chain. I haven’t been there in many years but found it uncomfortable there, and a lot of that is because they only sold beer. No liquor at all, but maybe that has changed. Sundance Square has actually gotten better over the years in my opinion, but I guess its early days skewed my perception of it. There are other places in Fort Worth to have a good time, but it may be a little dangerous. There are some good blues bars on the east side if you’re not scared of black people.
Uptown Dallas is full of douches. Greenville is much the same in my opinion. The West End was always really contrived, and as has been said Deep Ellum died a painful death a long time ago.
Denton is good, but small, and the crowd is young. Austin is great. I’d honestly stay in Austin and drive up for the games. Maybe you could even take the amtrak though I don’t remember what the schedule is. Either way, nightlife in Dallas isn’t what it used to be and for a city of its size it was never a lot to begin with. Fucking sad state of affairs, it is. There are a couple of cool places, sure, but to have any real music scene you need to have more than a couple cool places.
If I ever get rich I will single handedly turn the Cedars into what Deep Ellum used to be (and more). Lots of good space for clubs over here. Rail access. Near to the police. I’d go so far as to pay bands from other cities to relocate here so they can start a scene. If I were only a billionaire.
