Feliz recently has proven one thing to me

There is no way he isn’t getting a shot at the rotation within the next few years. Maybe it doesn’t happen next year, but the secondary pitches are there.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

It was pretty clearly in the strike zone

on the pitch tracker at least. Not straight in the middle of the plate, but a no doubt about it high strike. And of course, that came right after he was seeing high 90s heat on a few pitches.

Our hotel was literally right behind the ballpark – we walked out the back door and there was the outfield fence.

The team moving to Round Rock is just a new excuse for a road trip. This year we did OKC → Kansas City → St. Louis, I’m thinking Round Rock → San Antonio → Houston next year.

with wrestling really the past 5 years or so, i assumed shane kinda stepped away from it a little and concentrated on starting a family. though im sure he’s still involved

this reminds me, though probably few will see this, the best most well written piece every time it comes out on deadspin is the dead wrestler of the week segment, there latest rendition is owen hart (a very sore subject in the wwe’s spine) i actually still need to read this one but they’re always a joy:

So much.

It sucked that it was the only game I had at the time (I got the GameCube whole sale three weeks before US release through a friend), and I beat it on the first day.

But then I kept playing it and kept enjoying it. . .

But Melee and Prime were easily both in my top 10 at one point. I can still only think of 1-3 games I enjoyed more than Metroid Prime on first play through.

Captain Falcon was okay.

I used Ganondorf alot, and he was almost the same character, just a little tougher and a little slower.

And I could own faces with Marth. Eventually no one would play me if I used either of those two.

Actually. . .

. . . looks like he’s currently #2, right behind Fox on the same tier.

Also, clearly my friends and I play Brawl wrong since Zelda is banned from being played too often, yet she’s bottom tier. I’m guessing a pro could kill someone spamming Din’s Fire.

by philkid3 on Sep 9, 2010 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Though that's based on head-to-head.

I’m much, much, much better with Toon Link H2H. I rule with Zelda because of dominating distracted players in a four player brawl.

by philkid3 on Sep 9, 2010 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

How is Ness so low?

Or Game & Watch? They were two of my favorites. Ness was the only other one I used nearly as much as Marth.

by Arson55 on Sep 9, 2010 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Because they don't do very well in competetive play.

Their moves and movements aren’t very good at the highest level of H2H.

Playing at home with friends is a completely different thing. Especially if you play free-for-alls with items on broken stages. It’s also much, much more fun, I have no interest in becoming a competitive Smasher.

But when you get to money-winning tournaments, you get to an insane level of player. Are you familiar with Wave Dashing?

by philkid3 on Sep 9, 2010 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess all that's true.

But damn, I almost never lost a head to head with Ness. Of course, I was just better than my friends.

And no. I don’t think so.

Don't know if you can tell in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cw3zaC_YQI&feature=related

It’s a slightly complicated use of the buttons that allows you to glide along the stage and recover quickly. Essentially, move around really fast.

It’s essential to playing at a high level in Melee, and different characters can wave dash better than others.

Competitive Melee play gets intense. . .

by philkid3 on Sep 9, 2010 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions

And silly me for not thinking of competitive Smash Bros.

Given that I watch pro level Starcraft it shouldn’t be such a strange concept. I guess. It just doesn’t seem like a well balanced game for it.

But it’s not the same thing as being a great player. Favre makes way too many stupid decisions to be a great quarterback. Way, way too many. Emmitt didn’t have that problem.

They played two different positions, so Favre was exposed to making different kinds of mistakes.

I don’t disagree his gambles and interceptions have killed his team at times – they have. But he’s won a hell of a lot more than he’s lost (181-104) and so did Emmitt.

4 out his last 5 outings he’s allowed a run or more. Tired? Overexposed? Seeing a groundball guy who pitches low in the zone allow 3 HR’s in 3 straight games is a little worrisome.

Don't get me wrong, I love, love, love Elvis this season.

Less than I thought I was going to in May, but whatever. A shortstop capable of this plate discipline like this who I’m pretty sure is more likely to be plussy plus defensively than he has been this year at such a young age is a great thing. He’s already reached the level of production over his two years in the Majors that it was going to take for me to be fine with his prime (I hoped for more, but I only expected above average).

It's reminding me of Ian's 2008 watching him.

You see this dude with all this rangey talent, and you know he’ll probably be better in future seasons.

But the mental lapses are maddening this season.

by philkid3 on Sep 9, 2010 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Elvis and offense...

I wonder how his numbers would look if he batted at the bottom of the order. I think he would see better pitches to hit if he batted lower.

by coolaid on Sep 9, 2010 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Why would he see better pitches down there, rather than at the top, where pitchers don't want to put him on in front of the heart of the order?

Yeah, pitchers have to have simply realized he has no power or ability to pull right now

I wouldn’t really expect moving him to 9th would change the scouting report on him.

by LSJ on Sep 9, 2010 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

What's frustrating is we already know he's capable of much better, because he was legit awesome last year.

Ian up to that point had always had issues with his D, but Elvis has regressed bigtime from where he was his rookie season, and he hasn’t at least correlated it with an increase in offense, either.

Not saying I’m down on him going forward, but I’m starting to realize his 2010 has been a bit of a disappointment.

by LSJ on Sep 9, 2010 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Kind of weird that his DPR is where the big negative is for his UZR

Might have something to do with Kinsler being out for a lot of the season and having less than stellar 1B to throw to as well.

That’s not to say he isn’t to blame a bit, but its kind of hard watching him play like we have and seeing any way that he could possible be a negative on defense.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

by Gdawg on Sep 9, 2010 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Could be.

There is little doubt in my mind he’s a good-to-great fielder going forward. There is some doubt in my mind that he has been quite as bad as UZR says, but he hasn’t seemed that good for watching him. A whole lot of mistakes. Not something I expect to continue, but I certainly wouldn’t doubt anyone telling me he’s been average to barely above average.
