Bay Area Ranger Fans - HELP!
So I currently got offered a good job opportunity in SF (it's a 5month contract), but I don't know anyone near SF. I have one friend who lives in Roseville (near Sacramento) which is over 2 hours away (with no traffic). I am POOR. I'm also not used to making posts like these, but figured who better to ask than fellow Ranger die-hards. The job starts on January 24th, so I'd have to move out there ASAP, and was wondering if anyone either
A) Has some cheap recommendations for someone needing to move out to SF area for only 5 months..
or
B) Would be so kind to offer a couch for maybe 2 weeks until I find another place ( I would of course pay!)
This morning I had no intention of moving out to SF, but this oportunity is hard to pass up as I'm currently unemployed, but the work lines up perfectly for my resume and future goals.
Any advice is appreciated, sarcastic AND genuine, but mostly genuine! If I do end up accepting the offer and do move out there, the most important thing on my list in hitting every Ranger game in Oakland! HELP!

Hi
This is how I found my latest apartment:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/apa/
If you want cheap, the east bay and the peninsula are your best bets.
Thx
Been checking craigslist.. the only thing I don’t like is that I hate to commit to a month or more until I’m out there. I want to see the place in person before I fully commit. I suppose if that’s the case, my worst case scenario might be having to rent a weekly hotel until I find a suitable room/apt.
The huge downside to my situation is I’m only guaranteed work for 5 months and most apartments don’t have short/cheap leases.
Also
try looking at the Archstone and Avalon Apartments, they have places throughout the bay area.
http://www.archstoneapartments.com/Search_Results.htm?state=CA&market=58
they flexible lease terms, though the shorter the stay the more it cost
http://www.avaloncommunities.com/regions_search.asp
hopefully this is helpful
Rent a Uhaul storage to sleep in
and get a memebership at LA FItness/24 Hour Fitness to take showers. 5 months will fly by.
I totally would say that...
except my roommate already has a couch-guest through March.
ravscloC: Where is your job going to be? In the city? If money is an issue, you might want to look at some of the better areas in Oakland/East Bay areas (like Walnut Creek, Berkeley, Emeryville [which is technically where I live], or even South San Francisco) with a BART stop and just take BART into the city. Getting around the Bay Area is a snap, really, so finding a good place to live in your means is the most important thing. You should look into like Lake Merritt, Adam’s Point, Piedmont, Rockridge, Temescal and Jack London Square areas of Oakland if you decide Oakland is for you.

Appreciate the advice!
The position is in downtown on Montgomery Street, near Fisherman’s Wharf I think. I’m hoping to save most of the money I make on this contract position, so a cheap place to stay is a big must for me. I’ll probably only be taking my laptop and clothes with me.
The only places I’ve ever lived in my life are DFW and rural Japan, and I drove in both places so good public transportation is something I’ve yet to get accustomed to. It’s a little crazy to even be thinking about SF, but I’m 90% sure I should take this opportunity, even for just 5 months.
Will check out the places you mentioned on craigslist! Thanks!
I have onlly lived in small town Texas and OK
but have traveled to several big cities. SF is by far the easiest to get around bc BART is awesome. In just 2 days my wife and I were traveling the cities with no problems. Act like a tourist for the first couple of days by asking questions and you will be a pro in no time. Best of luck!!!

For a place to crash for 2 weeks
while you’re looking for a longer term rental, try these sites:
CrashPadder
AirBnB
Roomerama
iStopOver

Craigslist is the best bet
something like this for short term rentals

If you’ll be near Fisherman’s Wharf, I suggest you live in North Beach. For me, proximity to work is pretty crucial, as coming from the East Bay or South will likely take you a long time. North Beach is pretty expensive rent wise though, a studio will run you $1200-1400, but you can generally find short term rentals or shared apartment which would be cheaper. There are also areas like Inner Richmond, Mission, and the Sunset, where you can find cheaper places and they’re all accessible by Bus or the underground (Muni), which run 24/7
Plus living in the city is just fucking awesome, way better than any other part of the Bay.

Holy shit
this is why I’ll never lose my appreciation for Denton. I pay 340/month, which includes water and TV.

Living in the city
is the best and walking into the financial district is great too. Though I definitely pay for it, I would love to pay 340 a month!
oh wow, $340 is fucking ridiculous
I’d kill for that shit. Downtown SF, a one bedroom apartment ranges from $1400 – 1800. How’s the rent in downtown Dallas for a decent 1 brm apartment/condo?

Hmm, not sure
I have a friend living in Victory Park, which I believe qualifies as downtown… he has a decent two bedroom for which he and his roommate pay a little over 1,000. I believe It also comes with kickass cable and internet.

craigslist
definitely check craigslist.
I would also check what bus line runs by your work, then you can check out places off that bus line, no matter where you are it shouldnt be more than a 20-30 minute ride by bus, especially if you live right off it.
definitely check out north beach, russian hill, nob hill and try to see if anyone is looking for roomates. you probably get $1,000+a month if you’re going in by yourself in a studio.
if you dont mind a hike to work, but looking for the cheapest place check out richmond and sunset areas north of golden gate park.
do not get a place in tenderloin, no matter how cheap it is. filled with crack heads, homless bums and hookers….though that may be your thing.
you may also find a decent deal in the mission, which has it’s dodgy areas too, and is half hipster/half hispanic area, and shouldnt be too bad a commute

If he’s really looking to just hoard cash on his time out in SF then he should NOT be looking at $1000+ rents.
Living in the East Bay or Peninsula he can find a household looking for a roommate for probably as low as $500. It’s not going to be the nicest place ever, but he’s there for 5 months.
Heck I lived in the Presidio, had a huge bedroom in a shared house and paid like $700/month.

I’m surprised no one suggested couchsurfing.org as a short term solution. It’s a large global social network of people who offer their couches to crashers from all over the world. You may be able to find someone(s) who will be willing to host you for a few nights.
As for longer-term: it really depends on preferences. I get the sense you are young and hard core about saving money, and if that’s the case then I disagree with several of the suggestions made here.
1) Do not live in the city. It is obv much funner and easier to commute, but will cost you substantially more. That is unless you are slightly braver in which case you can look into:
2) The Tenderloin. It is not nice or clean, and yes there are a lot of black people, but it’s also not very dangerous if you know how to conduct yourself in a low-income neighborhood of a big city. It is also gentrifying fairly quickly (especially on the edges) and has a lot of good cheap restaurants. And it’s super close to downtown.
3) You can also look into cheaper areas in the Mission, or way out in Sunset or Richmond.
4) You can always scour craigslist for really cheap housing in the city. It will usually come in the form of people who live in places where they convert common space to bedrooms, or share bedrooms.
5) If you don’t care much for city life and will be focusing on work then consult the BART map and look to live close to one of the more distant stations. Your office is going to be blocks from the downtown SF BART stations.
Best of luck to you.
Well
I don’t live in the Bay area, but I do have one piece of advice:
Fuck saving money as a priority. You are going to one of the greatest cities in the world, and will only be there a short period of time. I’m guessing you are both young and single. It is entirely possible you might not get another opportunity like this. So get a place convenient to the stuff you want to see and do, don’t live alone, make lots of friends, and sleep as little as humanly possible.
5 or 10 or 20 years from now, which are you more likely to regret: not coming back with a little savings, or not sucking down every last delicious drop of SanFran cultustorical juice?

It was either accept the job or..
..spend the next 2 months playing PS3, refreshing LSB, and waiting for baseball season to arrive. Looking forward to a change!
And definitely looking forward to some Ranger baseball in the bay area. Would be great to meet up with some of you guys when I get situated!
Congrats man...
I guess depending on how much $$ you’re taking with you will depend how quick you can find a place. Good luck sir!
