Around SBN: Celtics Vs. Heat Game 1: Game Time, TV Schedule And More

For most EPL teams, between now and Feb. 1st are a coupla EPL games and an FA Cup match. The Carling Cup Semis 2nd leg is in there, too. I guess the only notable PL match for the contenders is ManU visiting Blackpool for, I assume, a make-up game. Would squeeze the table some if Pool can nip a point in that match while everybody else holds form thru Feb 1st.

Saw this at the Blue Moon forum ...
Some of Hughes buys:
.
Wayne Bridge 10 million – loan at West Ham
Joleon Lescott 23 million – not in first team when all fit
Emmanuel Ade 25 million – on the verge of a move for around 10 million
Craig Bellamy 14 million – loan at Cardiff
Jo 18 million – not in first team when all fit
Roque Santa C 18 million – loan at Blackburn
Robinho 32,5 million – sold to Ac Milan for around 20 millon
.
of course some other players he brought in are a success, but
we are talking about 140 million which is more then our current starting line up cost.

He did sign Tevez, NDJ, Kompany and Zabba. And I guess not selling Hart was smart. Otherwise …

Looking for silver linings ...

One of Robinho’s exit claims was that his signing with City heightened the signing attractiveness of the club. He’s sorta got a point, and maybe Adebayour’s signing has that hidden value, too. Perhaps you can consider City “breaking even” with both their stints if Adebayour leaves for @10M.

Hughesy

I wonder how much pressure he was under to actually overpay for the players he wanted. He could’ve gotten the directive to get whoever you want at whatever price, just make us win! He could’ve also gone crazy with the silly money after running on a shoestring budget at Blackburn.

Same happened to Alardyce when he went from Bolton to Newcastle. Sometimes buying cheaply and squeezing every ounce of talent out of the player/s is a manager’s strong suit, albeit a pain in the ass, and the flip side is hard for them to master.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

During the recent Tevez kerfluffle I learned a few things.

When you add it all up, it looks like Kia Joorabchian, Tevez’ and Mark Hughes’ agent, was hugely influential in the acquisition of talent at City during that timeframe. Kia makes money when players change hands. No doubt he was a de facto member of Hughes’ front office during his days at City. Kia saw mo money mo money and ensconced himself into the situation full bore. The recent Tevez situation was probably driven by Kia being excised from his City power base by the current Manchester regime. Vindictive little cuss, our Kia. After all is said and done tho’ Mancini inherited the spine of his team – Tevez, Kompany, NDJ and Hart – from the Chinese fire drill that proceeded him.

Serie A musings ...

Inter has won 4 straight league games since Rafa got the boot, if I understand the timeline correctly, and no thanks to some shaky D they can still improve. Inter now sit 6 pts behind AC Milan and have a game in hand. Things could get interesting in the Serie A table in the coming weeks – the scramble for the last 2 CL spots should get wild and woolly behind presumed Springtime front-runners Inter and AC.

And in case you’re wondering … Inter visits AC Milan on April 3rd.

by shroomer on Jan 20, 2011 3:38 PM CST reply actions

Leonardo

It sucks that Inter is finding all of this success with the AC Milan legend at the helm. Not only does he have them playing well but his inroads in Brazil he built up while at AC Milan will do nothing but help that team.

I wasn’t a big fan of giving him the manager’s spot last year and I was even less enthused about his sacking. Allegri is a great coach, it can’t be denied, but if hiring him comes at the cost of setting up Inter for the long haul, then it probably wasn’t worth it.

But the April clash will undoubtedly have serious implications. AC Milan have drawn at Lecce and against Udinese when they were down 1-3 with 20 to go so it’s not like AC Milan are flying high right now.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

Sid Lowe, the La LIga correspondent on the Guardian podcast said ...

that Mourinho was actively undermining Rafa from afar thru his contacts at Inter. Lowe said the hiring of Leonardo shows Jose’s influence, as L was JM’s boy. Jose was even spreading the message around the Inter lockerroom and front office to treat Leonardo well because Mourinho approves of him highly.

Watched their game yesterday

Shaky D is right.

Cesena had to play with 10 men for the last 20 minutes or so and they almost equalized it several times. I don’t understand why Inter was playing the trap in the waning moments. I guess you have to give them credit for getting the W, but that’s a team that’s been promoted twice in the last two years.

I'm not putting the odds of this as low as

the whirling Belgian, but I just don’t see it happening.

Wenger will keep an optimistic expectation for Vermaelen, for whatever reason, Squillaci is only a week away, and he thinks of himself as having extra depth in Song. Djourou has improved, and in his mind if he gets Vermaelen back, he’d have too many at the position and would put himself in jeopardy of losing Djourou or Koscielny after the season.

I don’t agree with most of that, but it’s what I think Wenger thinks. I guess we’ll see.

Charlie Adam

Read on a couple of the LFC forums that we put in a bid for him earlier today, it was rejected, and that a higher bid should be forthcoming this weekend.

Talks are still ongoing with Suarez as well- word is that we’ve given them two options, either straight cash or a lesser amount plus Ryan Babel.

Bale observation

Bale backs off the RB certainly, but the expectation of every other player on the field that Bale will end up eventually near the endline means he backs off the entire other team. Without him him in there today, Spurs are still skilled and quick, but they always have men in their laps stifling their buildup. Newcastle just went up 1-0 btw. yay

He was working his ass off, but his touches were a little heavy, his passes weren’t sharp and his marking was a little over-aggressive leading to some over pursuits and getting out of position. But it’s his first game in England for a new club so I’ll cut him some slack. He’s light years better than Keith Andrews at any rate, so that’s always a great thing to see.

Looked really good yesterday for AC Milan. He was everywhere playing as the attacking mid playing behind Ibra and Cassano. Commentator mentioned if any City fans were watching how they’d be pissed as they never saw THIS Robinho in their kit. I chuckled

If Pato can stay healthy and/or Cassano gets up to speed and if yesterday’s performance is any indication, Robinho is going to be a catalyst for AC Milan in that role. But watching Ronaldinho the past couple of years and knowing Robinho’s past it’s equally possible, if not moreso, that yesterday’s performance against a side like Cesena will be his best in 4 matches an he’ll be mediocre in those…

Oh and 4 points clear of Inter after they lost to Udinese who pushed AC to the limit a few weeks ago.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

Speaking cast off City players...

I’m hearing (and evidently these have been going on since first of the year) a possible Pato for Balotelli swap could be in the offing. Evidently Berlusconi is soured on Pato’s injury history, which is quite lengthy, and I know everyone in Milan wants Super Mario. Has anyone else heard these rumors and if so is there any credence?

I like Pato, but with his injury history if Balo is offered in return you do it every stinking day.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Jan 24, 2011 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

Totally disagree.

Pato’s injury history isn’t uncommon for a player his age and he’s already much better than Balotelli. He’s also not insane.

by LiamP on Jan 24, 2011 7:24 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Pato vs Balo

I think if all healthy they’d both score 20+ goals in Serie A, but how many years are Milan going to carry such a part time player?

Whatever the case, keeping Balo in check would be easiest in Italy and I think with the players and coaching staff they’d have as good a chance to tame him as anyone.

Pato is safer as he’s not nearly the loonytune as Balo, but his game is one of speed and if he keeps popping his hamstrings then what good is he?

But at the root of it all, Mario’s Italian, Pato isn’t. Also, Berlusconi has soured on Pato and has stated so publicly. That usually means the player is on his way out.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Jan 24, 2011 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

Why?

The bird in hand is worth more in the bush principle? Or the fact that you think Pato is a better player than Balo will be? Just curious

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

When you combine caliber of player

with headaches (even including injury concerns), I think he’s the better player/asset.

by Brett Perryman on Jan 25, 2011 5:06 PM CST up reply actions

Yah, no question, imo.

Balo’s got more raw talent and a higher ceiling because of his size and physicality, but never underestimate how much a guy’s value decreases when he’s an incredible ass.

Ibra and Pato

I know it hasn’t been a long period of time that they’ve played together, but it doesn’t seem that Ibra ahd Pato have meshed as a partnership. Maybe it is because they haven’t had a consistent run of starts, but there does seem to be something a little off about those two.

Pato does seem to have lost a lot with Pirlo being out as Pirlo was his main link-up. Pirlo was great at putting the ball out in space for Pato to run onto leaving the defenders in the dust. With a midfield consisting of Gattuso-Ambrosini-Flamini/Merkel/Seedorf the playmaking is gone. Especially with Robinho playing so far up field Pato gets left to play more of a support role for Ibra and he’s not flourishing in that role. Not saying he never would develop this part of his game, but at the moment this looks to be the case. This also could be influencing the front office’s desire to offload Pato. And it could just be a wild ass rumor…who knows.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

Wenger on Hazard
Arsene Wenger admits that he will try and sign Lille midfielder Eden Hazard, but only when he is made available for transfer.

Wenger has been watching Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Year for the past two seasons and, although the Belgian is currently rated at around ÂŁ15 million, has claimed he will make a move for the midfielder when the time is right.

’’He’s a player that I have followed for some time, but I do not want to unsettle Lille now,‘’ explained Wenger. ’’When he is available for transfer, we will see if there is the possibility to sign him.’’

Hazard is currently contracted to the French league leaders until 2014 and any deal looks likely to be delayed until the summer.

by Brett Perryman on Jan 25, 2011 4:41 PM CST reply actions

For what it's worth

I watched Wenger’s postgame PC and he signed off by saying that he’d be surprised if they did anything in the transfer window at this point. Of course that could be about as sincere as me saying that I’ll be surprised if I wake up tomorrow, but it does probably either indicate some level of pessimism or a message to some team that he’s willing to walk away from a deal. If some party doesn’t budge.

On the Croat

Sorry that I probably sound like a broken record on this, but the more I think about it, the less sense it makes to me that they would buy a CD for more than like seven million, just based on his demonstrated behavior. Djourou hasn’t been that bad and he still believes in Koscielny. Their top three are all long term propositions. He doesn’t have much in the pipeline at the position, but it just wouldn’t be like him to make another big investment there. Maybe he’d pay ten for a really good older guy in his late 20’s or something, but even that seems like a stretch unless he gets desperate.

If he does anything, my prediction is another Squillaci type, ÂŁ2-4 million or somesuch. And the selection of those types who are available, that cheap, and able to merge right into his system has to be tiny.

Di Benedetto is also partner in New England Sports Ventures (NESV), the parent company of Liverpool FC and baseball team Boston Red Sox, and was seen at the Stadio Olimpico on September 25 when Roma defeated Inter Milan.

Blackburn catchment area

So I tell people all the time that one of Blackburn’s biggest problems in terms of attendance is not only that Blackburn is the smallest town in the Premier League, but also that the catchment area is littered with Premiership sides or Championship sides who are always competitive and sometimes promoted. I always try to convey that between Blackburn, Preston, Burnley, Bolton that’s like having two Major league clubs and two AAA teams in the DFW area. How would THAT work out in terms of attendance?

So a friend who does gis stuff for a living put this assertion into her software and came out with this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cn174/5390790717/sizes/o/in/photostream/

This shows that if Blackburn is Lewisville, Manchester clubs are downtown Dallas, and Liverpool clubs are Benbrook, encompassing Wigan, and a host of lower league sides. Blackpool barely missed the cut, but a Major League team in Mineral Wells added to those in the DFW area just shows how condensed everything is over there and what Blackburn has to deal with in terms of gaining fans and ultimately attendance.

So next time you watch a Rovers game (if anyone here ever has) and notice the empty seats, just remember that there’s a lot of factors going against them.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

If they'd tried to buy him right after the WC he'd've prolly cost at least 30-35, so, yah.

Although I have to admit the one time I’ve seen him play for Ayax it was against Real and he was absolutely dreadful.

But the team as a whole was simply outclassed and it was pretty obvious he was pressing.

I'm not sure what to make of this

I know the club has had it’s issues. But last summer would have been the perfect time for El Nino to press for a transfer and he elected to stay.

Since then, the club’s been sold, is no longer under a mountain of debt, and King Kenny has returned as manager. All of that had to have been looked on favorably by Torres.

The signing of Suarez has to have had something to do with his transfer request.

And to be honest, I’m in the same camp that dirkatron is in.

The club massively needs some depth and it seems like every year, Torres is out for at least a month of two due to injury.

And the fact that Spain pretty much won the World Cup without much help from what many regard as the best striker in the world ought to tell you a little something.

Still, he’s a feared striker. And those aren’t a dime a dozen in the EPL.

True, but that move went down pre-WC, and I think it's fair to say that if you put The Nino on Barca he'd be in much better form.

Whether or not he’d be better than Villa… I don’t know.

But with Messi and Xavi creating for you, you’re gonna a lot more opportunities than at Liverpool, where their offensive strategy seems to consist of hoping to capitalize after Glenn Johnson falls down during one of his awesomely nonsensical runs and the ball accidentally squirts to a forward.

Torres

Two things bother me about his request- the timing and the team involved. Like you said, there’s been a massive improvement off the pitch the last few months with the new owners and Dalglish taking over for Hodgson, and a big new signing in Suarez that is intended to complement, not replace, Torres.

So why ask to leave now? And why to Chelsea, one of our main rivals?

Dalglish met with Torres earlier today to try and talk him into staying, so I guess we’ll know more later today.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/872481/usa-midfielder-michael-bradley-loaned-to-villa?cc=5901

United States midfielder Michael Bradley is heading to the Premier League for a loan spell with Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old will join from struggling German side Borussia Monchengladbach, according to well-placed sources close to Bradley.

The move ends weeks of speculation that Bradley, who has a year-and-a-half left on his Gladbach contract, might join Sunderland. But Sunderland’s sale of forward Darren Bent to Aston Villa has put them in need of a striker, and apparently cooled their interest in Bradley.

by Brett Perryman on Jan 29, 2011 8:17 AM CST reply actions

Good!

I saw yesterday he had signed with Galatasaray and was bummed because there’s no way we can watch him in the Turkish league. Even though it’s with Villa, at least we’ll be able to watch him play.

So now we have midfielders Dempsey, Jones, Holden, and now Bradley in the Prem. Now if we can just get those strikers up to speed…

I like both of those guys, but Petrov’s getting up there in years, and NRC plays like his hair is on fire at all times, which is awesome, but he’s always been a bit limited in terms of what he can do for you.

I think Bradley’s a pretty big improvement over NRC.

Hopefully the loan came with an option to buy his penis, cause holy shit that’d be awesome.

Yeah, it depends on whether

Has this move been made official yet, btw?

ESPN’s got it like it’s a done deal, but Kendrick (who’s usually pretty plugged-in) has it as(via Twitter):

@adamclarke501 Bradley, not quite done, but nearly

about 16 hours ago via web in reply to adamclarke501

I know he was supposed to a done deal to one of them Turkey/Ukraine clubs with 17 vowels as recently as yesterday, so I won’t be fully confident he’s here until I see firm confirmation of it.

God I’m pumped about this, but I’m dying to see the actual terms… If there’s not a permanent option in the loan deal then I agree with Poppins… adding another CMF to this team just for the next three months doesn’t make a sex-ton of sense to me.

Long term, though, it’s a great move, imo.

Petrov is old, NRC is comically limited in what he can do for you, and the younger Midfield guys are either too offensive minded to be considered true CDM’s (Delph, Bannan), or just plain aren’t good enough to really excite me (Hogg, Chris Herd’s Haircut, etc.).

Plus, fuck it… Having a USMNT on your team makes it more fun to follow.

So, hooray!!!

Wanna see a dog?

Go to the 2nd video down and watch the guy who’s covering at LB in white here. He gets sucked into the middle then totally dogs it up as he watches Dortmund construct a goal around him. I’d be a pretty ticked-off Wolfsburg fan if I saw their coach play him again anytime soon. Lazy eff. Nice hustle.

by shroomer on Jan 29, 2011 6:32 PM CST reply actions

Also on the 2d video look at Subotic's outlet pass from the back.

Subotic is becoming more of a beast every single game. It makes me so sick that he chose Serbia over the US to represent. He is so needed in our squad and with Serbia he’s behind Vidic and that other lad indefinitely. Whatever the case Subotic has fantastic vision and sets up those long searching passes at least twice a game. Sometimes the end up a goal as here, and one two weeks ago, and sometimes, not. But adding that dimension to the back line is fantastic to see.

Also Nuri Sahin is turning into thetalent Dortmund fans have been waiting for for a few years. Coming up as a 16 year old was exciting, but it didn;t come without the bumps in the road. Now he’s more confident and he’s better all around. Sahin will not be at Dortmund much longer but that is inevitable with a player his caliber.

Barrios starting is also a good sign. He was a little upset that he was left on the bench the last couple of games, even though he was coming back from injury. Hopefully this effort sets his mind at ease.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

Their defense was disinterested, and on the play where Squillaci got the red card, he was the fourth (simultaneously with Koscielny, the third) guy who figured he’d just kick at Hunt as he ran by (though Squillaci also grabbed him). Huddersfield could have had 2-3 early in the second, so Arsenal was really lucky to not lose, not to mention winning on the late penalty.

Squillaci, Denilson, Gibbs and Diaby were awful. The latter 2 have are just coming back from injury and Denilson is Denilson, but Squillaci needs to be replaced.

Mancini played for a 1-0 game. Dzeko gets him the 1 ...

problem is our zonal-marking CK defense gives up another soft goal. Which means we gotta do it all over again in a replay. Boateng played great, and the recuperating Silva looked good off the bench. This game screamed for youthful MF enthusiasm off our reserve squad, but team politics meant 18M Jo and 150k/wk Vieira must be played, despite their inappropriateness for such circumstances.

I'm really not sure where he fits in.

You’ll have Suarez and Carroll up front, so it won’t be a 3 man midfield. You already have Meireles/Lucas/Gerrard in the middle, so would Adam be pushed out wide?

by LiamP on Jan 31, 2011 11:44 AM CST up reply actions

Adam

That’s what I don’t get. He won’t start ahead of any of those three, and ÂŁ12 million seems like an awful lot for a squad player.

From what I gather, had Torres not put in a transfer request, the plan was to play 4-3-3, with Meireles, Lucas, and Gerrard in the middle, Suarez as the left-sided wing/striker, and either Kuyt or Maxi as the right-sided one. That should still work with Carroll, but again, where does Adam fit in?

Torres

This long-distance dedication comes to us by way of a Liverpool fan, who has a few choice words for the people responsible for Torres’ departure. The song, of course, is “Fuck You,” by Cee-Lo:

- Tom Hicks and George Gillett, for the broken promises, the lies, the debt, for getting rid of Rafa, for being the worthless assholes you are;

- Christian Purslow, for thinking you knew ANYTHING about running a fucking team that you professed to be a fan of, and for hiring the next person on my list;

- Roy Hodgson, for your archaic tactics, for your small-club mentality, and for all the stupid decisions you made, from signing Konchesky and Poulsen, to marginalizing Agger, to signing Joe Cole, to loaning out Aquilani, who, as you may notice, is tearing it up in Serie A;

- Roman Abramovich. Enjoy him. Hope all that tapping up at the World Cup was worth it;

- And finally, Fernando, to you. Why now? We’ll never forget you, but don’t expect half the love at Chelsea that we had for you in Liverpool. I would wish you luck, but I’m sure with all the money you’ll be earning, you can buy your own.

So, how is everyone else doing today?

I know I'm in the (extreme) minority here, but I think y'all got the better Premier League striker today.

He’s a walking injury risk of late, and obviously he’s a (whatever the British equivalent of an Jersey douche in an Affliction t-shirt is), but he’s got a fuckload of talent, and a big physical bull like him is pretty much the perfect strike partner for a guy like Suarez who prefers to drift around looking for space to attack rather than mix it up the opposing CB’s.

When you look at it as The Nino + 6mPOM for Suarez and Carroll I think this move is a hot cup of jubilant French rapes for the Pool.

It all depends on how uninjured/motivated Carrol can stay, imo.

Well, that and whether or not he can be persuaded to cut off that ridiculous fucking ponytail.

Carroll vs. Torres

If Torres regains fitness/form, there’s no competition as to who is better and who has the potential to be better, even if Carroll reaches his ceiling. Carroll, while technically competent and aerially dominant, is still going to be a guy without devastating pace that relies on distribution from others. Torres has enough pace and skill (presumably…he hasn’t really consistently displayed his old pace lately) to create his own chances. A player like Torres (pre-2010) is better than a player like Carroll in whatever league you put them in.

These two Boateng posts are agreeance-bait for me mostly.

‘cept maybe the plane crash part. Boateng’s got decent touch, but he’s too big for intricate passing up the sideline. And he looks jittery at wingback to boot. Needs to be at CB – looked cool as a cucumber the other day at CB – solid, poised. Your points make me think that with Boateng and Boyota already on board, maybe we should spend Allah’s money elsewhere, Sahib.

If anything y’all need to jettison some pieces.

You’ve got a great depth along the back line, a bajillion high-quality defensive/central midfielders, and up front you’ve got a world class creative AM in David Villa, a fantastic target man ST in Dzeko, and an explosive goal machine in Tevez, plus Weiss (who’s gonna be a stud) and Johnson looking to break into the rotation over the next two years.

To stop buying over-priced pieces of shit who don’t fit your squad (like Millner) and/or extraneous headcases who serve no purpose other than to fuck with team chemistry when they inevitably ride the bench (The Super Happy Fun Balo) is what y’all need to fucking to do.

(Unless it’s from Villa, in which case PLEASE continue to overpay for things you don’t need. Please, please, please…)

Between him and Rochina we spent 8 million. Add in the JJones and Roque loans and we had a very productive window. Best one in a looooong time.

LOVED the Jones transfer. (Assuming there's a permanent option included, which there was, iirc... right?)

Not just because he’s “American” now, either.

Dude’s a big, physical force who thinks about only one thing: Tackling the fucking ball back.

Teams need dudes like that these days when it seems like everyone wants to try to get forward.

Jones shows no inclination to getting forward.

“You can’t tackle on the attack,” he seems to say.

There is a permanent option indeed included

Evidently Stuart Holden talked to JJones about Blackburn saying it’d be a good place to come. And evidently we had a late bid in for Bradley as well and again Holden talked Rovers up. Would have LOVED to have had both Bradley and JJones on the team, but in a static 4-4-2 I can’t imagine too many times they’d be on the field at the same time.

Ah well, whatever the case, Holden’s my boy for talking us up as much as he reportedly did. He may be a notlobber but he’s alright in my book.

As for jones, he’s that rare bird who has an incredible work rate and has some skill to accompany it. A lot of guys work hard, but because that’s the only way they can stick in the league. Jones looks the sort who will be a perfect complement to Nelsen-Samba and Jones-Samba when Nelsen moves along.

Speaking of, Phil Jones was on the training pitch the other day so his recovery is coming along nicely. Cannot wait to get that guy back

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

I kinda doubt he'd still be @ the Burn if he hadn't gotten injured.

There were pretty strong rumors linking him with pretty much every big club in the P-Ship before the injury scuttled all that, iirc.

And we’re used to that. It doesn’t make it any easier, but we’re not delusional to think he’ll stay at the club forever.

Probably some fuckwad team like City will buy him for a wad, not play him, loan him out and then ultimately sell him to Wigan after 4 years.

The difference these days is we have owners who have a bit of money. Now if that will translate into wage increase possibilities, that remains to be seen. But it should delay any move for a year or two at the least…hopefully….

AC Milan

Remember that discussion we had on how AC Milan’s RB and LB’s were suspect ahead of the upcoming Tottenham match?

Since then they have signed

Urby Emmanuelson – LB
Didac Vila – LB
Marco Legrottaglia – LB
Mark van Bommel – DM

Hopefully these guys can get up to speed because no more playing time for Antonini and Bonera is needed. They have both been horrid this year at LB. Abate at RB has been better, but he needs replacing. Unfortunately replacing Abate would be with Massimo Oddo which is worse. Also, Nesta is out for a month with a shoulder issue which leaves Mario Yepes as the stand-in with Sokratis as CB depth.

They helped fill some holes this window, but there are plenty of them left.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Jan 31, 2011 5:47 PM CST reply actions

Right.

Abate’s still got to face Bale, and while he has enough pace, he’s so undisciplined at that position that Bale will probably make him look like a tard.

Can't see how this is much of a negative for Chelsea.

If Roman’s willing to spend the money, and Aguero doesn’t want to leave Madrid, I’m not sure who was better and available…even looking down the road a bit to the summer, Torres still would’ve been the most attractive option.

The Aguero saga (as well as losing out on some other options that it was hard to tell how strongly Chelsea were pursuing) had made me rather disillusioned with the transfer window. Just when I think you can’t do anything worse….you go and totally redeem yourself.

Didn’t sell Ashley, which good.

Loaned out Guzan to get him some 1st team action (wish we’d done that with Lichaj..)

We weren’t able to get Warnock out (that I’ve heard) and didn’t bring in a LB to take his spot… that’s my only real long term issue with our January.

Shocker
The United States has cancelled its friendly with Egypt which was scheduled for 9 February in Cairo.

by sprite on Feb 1, 2011 11:15 AM CST reply actions

Obviously there are bigger issue for Egypt right now

But that would have been an interesting match. Egypt is probably the second best team that didn’t make the last World Cup (after Russia). They have won three straight African Nations Cup titles.

Grading the January transfer window team by team

Anyone up for it? I’d tackle it, but I actually have to work on this glorious Snow Day.

Probably need a new post to rec up anyway

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

I can give you Sky Sports' rankings

Just rank the teams in order of how much money they spent. Every big buy was a great move, every sale was a disaster, and the teams who did nothing are in big trouble. I expected a little more in depth analysis, but I haven’t watched them that much.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 1, 2011 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

I value the posters' views here more than Sky Sports

Well maybe not RCCook’s…heh…kidding

but yeah Sky’s Big Club bias is as bad as ESPN’s.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

Fulham

I suppose I would give them a B. They grabbed Eidur Gudjohnsen on loan, which will give them some good attacking depth off the bench. They also acquired Steve Sidwell on the permanent deal, and I think he’s a solid and somewhat underrated player. He was excellent against Tottenham.

They didn’t do much else, including not selling Dempsey, happily. Danny Murphy signed a one year extension, which is notable.

I think their increasingly strong play of late led them to sit tight. Their attack is finally starting to come together. Dempsey continues the with with his excellent run of form going back to last season, Dembele is back from injury and is playing well, and while Andy Johnson hasn’t found the net much, his form has been the best I’ve seen since his Crystal Palace days. With Zamora due back within the next month, I think Fulham is primed to finish the season strong and maybe even put together a run at the FA Cup.

Villa

Thought Makoun looked great. Smart passing and I don’t remember him giving the ball away at all. That’s probably not good news as far as Bradley is concerned.

Nani basically did pearings on whoever y’all put on him though.

by LiamP on Feb 1, 2011 3:55 PM CST reply actions

He might need an injury to get in.

I have a feeling Houllier is too enamoured with Petrov’s leadershipness.

Plus Villa’s defense did a pretty good impression of where they were earlier in the season. I mean, that Vidic strike was ridiculous for a centreback, but way to mark him, guys.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

Makoun and Bradley are different animals.

Agreed Makoun looked great (without him I’m thinking the score would’ve been Aston Villa: -7, Nemanja Vidic’s Super-Rapist Evil Grin: 666), but he goes about 5’8 and looks like he weighs about as much as my dick when it’s fucking flaccid.

He’s a good possesion-type holding midfielder, but you can’t run a guy like that out without a more physical partner, imo.

Bradley’s 6’2, strong, and while he’s nowhere near as calm and composed on the ball or adept with his distribution as Makoun is, Bradley’s much more dirty work-inclined than Makoun will ever be.

Don’t know if he’s the guy to pair with Makoun long term as our CMF, but I think he’s competing more with Petrov’s Penis Tattoo (and possibly NRC if we decide to bring him back… PLEASE DO NOT BRING HIM BACK) than with makoun.

Yin/Yang.

The 40 trumps all!

Frustrating game

Officiating was terrible all around and Arsenal spent too much time complaining and not enough time powering through. It’s not often that you see several guys from a team go to complain to the officials after a game they won.

Thank goodness they won, though. It’s going to be interesting to see what Spurs do over the next month or so. They could drop off the map if they don’t get hot. If they don’t win at Blackburn they’ll be 5 or 6 points behind Chelsea, which I doubt Chelsea will come close to conceding, and 6 or 7 back of City. However, if they stay hot that top five could be quite the free-for-all.

Moyes

I think that Fabregas was unacceptably belligerent on the field, so I can only imagine what he said. It is a little gratifying for Moyes to acknowledge some of the poor officiating as well.

But an angry Moyes said Fabregas should have been dismissed for his rant at the referee in the tunnel at the interval. “I think it was offside, the wrong decision, but it was not Everton who made the decision,” Moyes said.

“I also thought there were some really bad tackles. But Fabregas’ comments to the officials when he was coming down the tunnel warranted a sending off.

“It was disgusting. I am not going to repeat what they were. They were disappointing comments from someone who is such a talented footballer.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger denied Moyes’ account of events. He told Sky Sports: “I was next to Cesc Fabregas at half-time. He didn’t speak to the referee at half-time. I spoke to the referee. If you have the film on camera, you can check.”

But Moyes continued: "I won’t go into what they were, but they were deserving of a sending off, 100%.’’

From what I've seen

Wenger has no problem lying when it comes to what he considers protecting his players for their behavior.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 2, 2011 7:58 AM CST up reply actions

And boy does he love to not spend money
Wenger’s starting line-up in the 2-1 victory against Everton on Tuesday cost just ÂŁ40 million to assemble, incredibly, ÂŁ10 million less than Torres alone cost Chelsea – and it was a fact that appeared to bring the thrifty Frenchman great pleasure.

“That’s why I sat back in my armchair on the bench and watched with satisfaction,” Wenger said.

Arshavin is finally starting to show signs of life

Now way they win this game a couple of months ago. Hopefully, Chelsea starts beasting and takes some points off United.

I can’t see Spurs sustaining their form.

I only saw highlights

but it looked like they really swarmed Sunderland today. And that was without Drogba and Torres.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 1, 2011 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

It was pretty one-sided.

Could have easily been 6-2 or more. Kalou hit both posts with one shot.

What. A. Mess.

Or at least until a couple of women became frantic and insisted that they be allowed to get to their children: they were beaten with truncheons for their disrespect for authority and, probably, for being women in the first place.

Blatter

I’m reading David Goldblatt’s book “The Ball is Round,” and he had some very choice words regarding Blatter’s tenure at FIFA- basically, that he and his staff live like Turkish sultans, and that they’ve frittered away hundreds of millions of dollars without any kind of financial accountability.

This is a pretty big win for Arsenal

Nasri says he’ll sign a long term deal. Listening to one of Wenger’s recent PCs, it sounded like he’d been having to work pretty hard to sell him on not moving again.

Yep

Just saw on the LFC website that he’s one of the subs for today’s match. Hopefully these damn blackouts take a break from 2-4 today!

Suarez on

63rd minute, and we have a 1-0 lead on a Meireles goal.

Suarez is wearing #7- Dalglish’s old number. Talk about expectations!

Suarez

From what I could tell, he was playing on the left, but with plenty of license to cut in towards the middle.

I never could quite make out the formation today. It looked a bit like 3-5-2, but we had six players who are usually defenders starting, with Johnson playing almost as a left wing, and both Agger and Skrtel making occasional forward runs, while the other stayed back with The Greek.
