Egypt: Goin' Bat-poop

So looks like Egypt has gone off the grid.  I'm seeing posts that there's no internet access there right now, that the soon-to-be-late Mubarak regime has taken everything offline.  I tell you one thing, if the government of the country where I was living crapped out the internet, I would start looting just out of sheer boredom.  Also, it would be a great 72 hours or week or whatever to own a porno store.

If you are unpopular with your people

the US shouldn’t do a damn thing to prop you up. Self determination and all that. Propping up dictators is just a bad long term move.

My granddad still talks about the craziness of Puerto Rico drivers when he was stationed there in the 50s

He said they’d drive, honk, stop, honk some more, and then get out of their cars and fight.

I used to be good friends with a Puerto Rican dude, I can confirm this.

Also, drivers in Guam are pretty messed up too. Unless you are loaded, you drive a junker. They call them Guam-bombs. They are usually rusted out because of the salt air, and with the magnitude of the sun there, and the lax laws, people have the darkest window tint you have ever seen. So dark, in fact, that they leave an untinted space of maybe 1 foot square or smaller right in front of the drivers’ face so you can see to drive. Meet one of those careening at 60mph on a mountain road with a 200 foot cliff to the immediate right…scary stuff.

I spent a week in Greece in 2005, and the Greeks were easily the worst drivers that I've ever seen.

Nice cars, shitty cars, it didn’t matter. They had no appreciation for pedestrians at all and if you stepped into the street, they wouldn’t even try to stop. I had one Greek cab driver tell me that Greece led all of Europe in traffic-related fatalities because pedestrians have no right of way at all and there is no punishment for bad drivers.

Do you drive on the right or left side of the road in Guam?

That reminds me of my experiences in Turks & Caicos and the US Virgin Islands. You’re on these narrow roads, some of them winding around the side of a mountain. 90% of the vehicles are a POS. Add to that driving on the opposite side of the road and everything seeming backwards, and it feels like death is imminent every time you get on the road.

Right side

And Guam is odd…it is 1/2 coral island (flat as a pancake), and 1/2 volcanic island, so it does have some rather massive cliff drop-offs.

According to wiki:

Elevation extremes
Lowest point: Pacific Ocean, 0 metres (0 ft)
Highest point: Mount Lamlam, 406 metres (1,332 ft)

We rented a car and toured the entire island including climbing Mount Lamlam, which is the highest point mentioned above. There is also a really neat forest of crosses at the peak, eerie to see up close. Sigh, I have to go back there before I die.

I could definitely see the military being behind him.

Him being involved with the Air Force didn’t seem to be that significant to me. The first thing I thought of was this.

However it appears that his claim to fame was being hired to rebuild the Air Force instead of being responsible for the destruction.

I don’t know though. The military will support you for a while, but the size of the protests combined with the increasingly ridiculous reaction to them will ultimately wear on the military. Plus, the protesting started after the incidents in Tunisia. Now protestors have shown up in Jordan and Yemen. They can feel a solidarity with other parts of the region which will no doubt strengthen their resolve.

In today's world?

It’s not in the same ballpark as forcing people into slave labor, say, but it’s getting to the point where a government shutting off internet access for its citizens is an extremely hostile act. It’s one of those technologies where there’s no easy way to rewind to a pre-invention state.

It’s not a right in the sense that we need to go make sure everyone has it, but it is something that once it reaches critical mass it’s unreasonable to revoke. If there’s a right to communicate, then there needs to be protection of the tools to do it.

(Question: is there still internal connectivity in Egypt?)

by Closure GT on Jan 28, 2011 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

What about satellite TV? Cell phones? Cars? Are those basic human rights the deprivation of which constitutes a crime against humanity?

Why can't technology create new rights?

I’m not advocating the internet as one, but why can’t new ideas be classified as human rights as society advances?

by Josh Lile on Jan 28, 2011 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

I think there's a distinction between "basic human rights" and "human rights."

May be a distinction without a difference, I’m not sure, but when I’m thinking of basic human rights, I’m thinking of absolute necessities to survival of the species, not luxuries like instant communication or online poker.

Ah.

I think our differences on this is coming from “survival of the species” vs “survival of society/most of the people in the society.”

I can see the difference there.

I don’t think its just semantics either. There is a legitimate difference, but I think the human rights distinction itself should grow as technology allows it to grow.

SMS is shut down for the most part.

I’d think there is little internal connectivity, but thats the entire point. You keep people from communicating to keep them from organizing.

It’s definitely a hostile act to shut the internet off, but that isn’t the same as saying the internet is a basic human right.

by Josh Lile on Jan 28, 2011 3:22 PM CST up reply actions

Which is pretty dumb

If you have not internet and no communication wouldn’t you just head to the streets since you have nothing to do?

by sprite on Jan 28, 2011 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

People figure out how to communicate pretty quickly in that situation.

It’s a desperation move, not something that will actually help.

I don't think it's there yet, but in the majority of the US I think in 20 years (probably more like under 10)

you’ll literally be unable to function adequately without internet connectivity (especially as phone and TV communications move more and more towards being subsets of internet communications).

For anyone interested...

Al Jazeera’s English site is chronicling tweets from Egypt

AJELive Egyptian army have not not declared whether they are backing the protestors or the govt #Jan25 #Egypt #Mubarak http://twitpic.com/3u9a06

evanchill Egypt state TV says the army has secured the Egyptian Museum, where we had heard youth activists had first gone to protect it. #jan25

So youth activists went to secure the Egyptian Museum, then the army came over and peacefully took over for the kids? That sounds fairly cooperative.

by Josh Lile on Jan 28, 2011 3:05 PM CST reply actions

And we would have burned down the Egyptian Museum, too, if it weren't for those meddling youth activists!

I'd say that, probably.

He also said that he is dedicated to the preservation of human rights. Might as well say it while sitting on a throne made of human bones.

So help me...

If these fuckers destroy anymore artifacts…

I’m a very liberal guy, but the people responsible for that shit should be executed. Who the hell would cut the head off of a mummy and loot a museum like that? Screw those people.

I don't care...

that’s bullshit.

If you want to protest and show your displeasure that’s one thing, but to try and steal or vandalize 3 or 4 thousand year old artifacts? That’s crap.

And from what I’ve seen most of their museums and historical artifacts have been guarded pretty well by police and military. The people that did probably had to plan this shit out. There’s no excuse for it at all. I hope those that did it all die.

i was there exactly 1 year ago

it’s pretty crazy to see all this take place. i walked all around Cairo’s old town side, including Tahrir Square which is currently one of the main places of protests.

the museum of antiquities was unreal. not only in what exactly they had in there, but that it was cobbled together more like your cousin’s basement. just huge relics, tombs, statues sitting out in the open. description cards in english and arabic were faded, dusty and in typewriter.

there was a general malaise in everyone regarding the state of the country, Mubarak, poverty, etc. Egyptians are a proud people, many are educated and very familiar with “western” principles and way of life. yet, they have extreme corruption in govt, terrible poverty and fraud. wait, kind of sounds familiar…err, nevermind.

but still, Egypt was an amazing place and i highly recommend anyone to visit, once this all calms down of course! see the other cities on the Nile as well. Cairo gets too crazy after about 3 days.

Yeah...

but whoever takes over could be viewed as a ‘savior’ by many there compared to Mubarek.

It’s still going to take a lot of work to get that country straightened out though.
