Brandon Webb, Arthur Rhodes signings being announced today

Per T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers are having a press conference this afternoon to officially announce the signings of Arthur Rhodes and Brandon Webb.

The Rangers 40 man roster is full, so two moves will have to be made to make room for Rhodes and Webb.

Wilmer Font is out for the season with Tommy John surgery, and thus would be a candidate for the 60 day d.l., but I don't think he can be placed on the 60 day d.l. just yet...I'm not sure, but I think you can't do that until sometime in March.

Other potential DFA candidates are Max Ramirez, who is out of options, 4th on the catching depth chart, and struggling to regain his offensive value; Pedro Strop, who has great stuff but hasn't been able to convert that to results at the major league level; Guillermo Moscoso, who has good stuff but hasn't been able to convert that to results at the major league level; Clay Rapada, a lefty specialist on a team with quite a few lefty options; and Rule 5 pick Mason Tobin.

I've been wondering if the Rangers were delaying the announcement because of a potential trade that would clear a 40 man roster spot or two, and it is possible that one or more of those guys above have already been run through waivers and cleared.

But in any case, there's going to be a couple of roster casualties shortly, plus a third player removed when the Rangers end up signing either Adrian Beltre or a DH.

I still believe in Max!

Seattle could use a young DH. I hope they pick him up.

Well,

being run through waivers isn’t a death sentence for a career. Look at Cruz. Sometimes it helps give the player a kick in the butt.

Rapada seems like a promising lefty specialist,

but with the Rhodes signing, he doesn’t have a spot, so he’s probably one of the guys to come off the 40.

by MikeEl on Jan 3, 2011 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

Unless you fear Rhodes may break down as the year goes on

Rapada would be a nice addition late in the season if Rhodes’ age catches up to him finally. Or Oliver for that matter although Oliver is more of a all around setup man not a lefty specialist

108 IP over the last two years

And he will share time with DO, so I really think Rapada is superfluous.

Font

Isn’t the question of whether he’s optioned or put on the DL worth about $400,000 to him?

I suspect he goes on the 60-day DL in the spring to avoid burning an option on a guy who hasn’t pitched above A-ball and is about to miss an entire season, but the trade-off is he gains a year of service time towards both arbitration and free agency. I guess we should be happy if that’s ever an issue, though.

by Darrell McKown on Jan 3, 2011 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

yeah its similar to what we are facing with Eric Hurley

Hurley hasn’t pitched in 2 years, has all three of his options left still, and now has over 2 years of service time.

On the bright side is whenever he hits arbitration he won’t have a track record to get much of a payday but hes only under control for 4 more years (7 if we use his options).

with Font I think because he hasn’t pitched above A ball it would be best to DL him and save the option. Once he starts pitching again in 2012 he will need time to get back in the swing of things likely back at A ball (now that we are in Myrtle Beach instead of Bakersfield). Then if you figure 3/4 of a season at AA, still relatively young for that level, and some time in AAA you are looking at 2+ seasons before being ML ready.

Obviously that timetable can accelerate or slow down depending on how he recovers and what track the Rangers put him on, strictly bullpen or keep him as a starter, but I would rather save the option on him in 2011 for later down the road than save the service time.

by bigsteve on Jan 3, 2011 1:31 PM CST up reply actions

I can't imagine....

…they’re going to put him on waivers, given that they just added him. He’ll either go on the 60 day d.l. when he’s eligible, or they’ll keep him.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 3, 2011 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

Good

I thought that you were intimating that since he can’t be placed on the DL at this point, he’d be a candidate to be dropped.

agreed, that would be a mistake at this point

Yeah, that was poorly written on my part

I was addressing the fact that Font is a 60 day d.l. candidate, and thus will be moved off the 40 man that way at some point, but I didn’t think he could be yet.

Oh, Clay Rapada.

I’ll never forget A) how you were brought in specifically to beat Robinson Cano (he went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, but who’s counting?); and B) how you struck out Marcus Thames.

by ab03 on Jan 3, 2011 12:32 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Yup.

7-1 Texas, first and second, 2 outs, Jeter on deck.

Pitch 1: 77 mph slider (swinging strike; 0-1)
Pitch 2: 77 mph slider (foul; 0-2)
Pitch 3: 88 mph fastball (foul; 0-2)
Pitch 4: 77 mph slider (foul; 0-2)
Pitch 5: 88 mph sinker (ball; 1-2)
Pitch 6: 79 mph slider (ball; 2-2)
Pitch 7: 79 mph slider (foul; 2-2)
Pitch 8: 78 mph slider (ball; 3-2)
Pitch 9: 77 mph slider (swinging strike; K)

A six-run lead had never felt less safe.

I think it was that by pitch 6, you just couldn't fathom how Rapada was going to get the ball past Thames

It looked like he had figured Rapada out completely and was waiting for the inevitable walk

by ab03 on Jan 3, 2011 12:44 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Yep.

When Thames laid off the slider to make it 2-2, you just felt like he’d figured it out, and wouldn’t chase that pitch again. Then Jeter would come up and ducksnort a two-run single over Mitch Moreland’s head, making it 7-3, and it would be full-on panic mode. Wash would bring in Oliver, and he’d put a 88 mph fastball on 2-0 belt-high to Granderson, who would park it about 450 feet to left, making it 7-6. The Rangers would go on to lose, 8-7 in 10 innings, going down 2-0 heading back to the Bronx. Cliff would go 7 strong, but Pettitte would match him pitch-for-pitch, and the bullpen would melt down in the late innings of Game 3, giving the Yankees a 3-0 edge. From there, Tommy gets bombed in Game 4, and the Yankees go on to win their 28th title riding the momentum of a sweep to a 4-2 series victory over San Francisco.

I don’t think I played it out entirely at that moment standing in section 322, but I probably at least imagined that game ending that way.

I think it’s Rapada and Moscoso.

Rapada isn’t going to make the team with both Rhodes and Oliver on the roster, he’s out of options, and he’s been outrighted once already, I believe. He probably declines the outright if he clears waivers and tries to find a better situation.

Moscoso, I’m guessing they suspect will slip through waivers.

How many guys here have a strong QC background?

I ma considering doing some research into MTBF in relation to sports. I am considering both looking into bullpen and rotation construction in baseball for both injury and “blow up” starts or innings…

Anybody have any other areas that would make an interesting research study? Found out that if I start my Ph D that the journal of sports science and the journal of sports economics are “A” journals that would be recognized in the applied stats fields.

more of working on the conceptual idea

curious on how MTBF has been applied in other areas to look at the validity of running it in a high variable construct like sports…

I am curious to see if it can be condensed down into a viable format that can be applied across multiple sports. Start with baseball and see if the same ideas work in Football, Futbol, Cricket, Hockey, etc…

Interesting idea

MTBF isn’t really something I work with- my job is mostly concerned with making sure all our data entry and project people complete their work correctly and on time- but I could see how it might apply to sports, given its use in analyzing the failure/breakdown of complex systems. One of the big things that fascinates me about teams is why, given relatively equal resources, some are consistent successes, and others, consistent failures.

As for cross-sports applications, I don’t see why not, once you have the initial theory developed. The sabermetric revolution in baseball seems to have spawned a good deal of similar analysis in other sports. I know the BP guys also run basketball and hockey sites, there’s Football Outsiders (among others) for the NFL, and I follow several soccer sites that are doing tactical and financial analysis that are right up there with anything being done in baseball.

Hope that helps.

There are no such things as "stupid questions"

But here is an attempt at one….

Why risk losing anyone who is out of options at this point in time. Since we can not DL anyone for roster relief that is needed for these signings why not use someone who has options until we can use the 60 day DL? Feliz and Moreland have to have options left. (right?) Why not option those guys down until ST when the roster has more flexibility? Avoid exposing anyone to waivers until the time is better or a trade can be worked out?

Like I said just a silly question.

You can only be young once but can be immature forever!

Well options don't work in the offseason

Options don’t remove you from the 40 man roster. Options only allow you to send a guy from your 25 man active roster to the minors without exposing them to waivers.

We have to drop two players from the 40 man roster in order to make room for Webb and Rhodes

Just found out my group request for Opening Day tickets wasn’t filled. Apparently a ton of groups that had tickets last year couldn’t even be filled. A friend of mine with a group said he only got 120 of his 225 tickets and they were moved from behind home plate in the upper deck to out by the left field foul pole.

There are tons of season tickets being sold apparently.

Except then those same fans get restless when the team you do actually field sucks

Given their roster construction they could easily be like Seattle was in 2010. Great SP but no offense which results in a lot of 2-1 or 3-2 type losses. Obviously their current crop of players are better than Seattles are so I don’t see them actually being that bad but if their older players’ decline is sharper than expected then it could be ugly

by Rodney on Jan 3, 2011 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

Yep. It's air pressure. Rodney got it.

It’s important to meteorologists because in winter very high surface pressure is caused by very cold air through a large depth of the atmosphere. And, over the years, forecasters have rules of thumb based upon pressure readings they’ve developed from looking at maps after maps.

Did you know meteorology is the profession with the 2nd highest incidence of asperger’s syndrom?

These air masses get real cold over the North Pole and Siberia. Sometimes they break loose and head south, and the pressure is an indicator of the weight of the air, so when something that heavy starts moving, it’s hard to stop it.

Godspeed Mike Olt.

“It wasn’t a thing like we began arguing and I started shooting,” Simon said. “It was some accident; it happened by accident. That’s why I came here — to open my soul.” That might not help much. Michel Esteban Castillo is still dead and his brother Starlin is still gravely wounded. Dominican authorities are reportedly seeking a three-month incarceration for the O’s reliever so that the case can be more widely investigated. That would obviously put him out for spring training and a guilty verdict could mean 30 years in jail

From TR Sullivan's latest blog.
* Club officials are not particularly optimistic that something will get down with third baseman Adrian Beltre. That deal seems unlikely give the tenor of feeling on Monday but things could change.

* The Rangers have sounded out Michael Young about a possible position change. Young was not receptive to the idea. Young has not spoken to the media this winter but has told the Rangers he’s not interested in moving off third base.

From Buster Olney
Advance scouts respected (Michael) Young’s efforts to play third base but thought he was average on his best days and much less than that on this worst. If the Rangers shift Young to a DH/utility type of role, using him at all infield positions occasionally to spell the regulars, and install Beltre at third base, they would immediately have the best left side of any infield in the majors, with shortstop Elvis Andrus and Beltre teamed together.

The bottom line to this is that if the Angels don’t get Beltre and the Rangers do, the gap between the Angels and the Rangers will grow again, and Texas’ everyday lineup — which was good enough to reach the World Series last year — will have a chance to be even better, looking something like this: SS Andrus; DH Young; CF Josh Hamilton ; 3B Beltre; RF Nelson Cruz ; 2B Ian Kinsler; LF David Murphy/RH hitter; C Yorvit Torrealba/Matt Treanor; 1B Mitch Moreland

Does he know that he would pick up a step to his left if he would leave his fucking WALLET in his locker during games? Hard to move with something that heavy.

I think extension is probably the wrong word to use here

Likely its a deal for his arbitration years.

So a 4 year deal is what will likely get done

by bigsteve on Jan 3, 2011 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

No, it's an extension

It has been rumored to be 7 years for about a week now.

I can’t imagine CarGo would be the first guy Boras gives away FA years for unless its a massive payday.

The outfielder’s Twitter account announced that a contract “is almost a fact” and confirmed that it will be in the seven-year, $80MM range.

7/80 huh?

Im guessing it goes something like

2011: 0.75 mil
2012: 2.5 mil
2013: 5.0 mil
2014: 10.0 mil
2015: 20.0 mil
2016: 20.0 mil
2017: 21.75 mil

from mlbtr
Scott Boras says he is “negotiating with Colorado,” according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick. The agent denies that the outfielder’s Twitter announcement indicates that a deal is complete, but Crasnick reports that the sides are nearing an agreement (Twitter links).

2:05pm: The Rockies have agreed to an extension with Carlos Gonzalez. The outfielder’s Twitter account announced that a contract “is almost a fact” and confirmed that it will be in the seven-year, $80MM range. Troy Renck of the Denver Post says it sounds like the deal will be completed this week (Twitter links). The agreement is pending a physical.

If that is the case then we need to be on the phone with Boras right now about Elvis

This would be the first Boras client I can recall that has ever signed away FA years and we need to lock up Elvis as soon as possible
